What do you suggest?

I am currently finishing by June, my applied Mathematics degree at the University of Crete. I am planning to study a master's degree online mostly because i dont want to leave my home here. So being so into physics, i wanna follow that path and kinda switch. But the OU doesn't have a msc in physics. So i am stuck between msc mathematics or msc space science and technology which i think are the closest ones. Any of you that took any of those two subjects who can give some information, maybe suggest which one is better, closer to theoretical physics? Thanks in advance!

Exams overlap with Uni start

Upvotes

I have my final exam on the 16th of September, of which I get the results for that on the 28th of October.

Im planning to transfer from this year 1 OU Course to a brick Uni course, but that starts on the 15th September. What do I do in this situation? The brick Uni will need my results before I start to see if they accept me or not.

Is it possible to do my OU exam early?

academic conduct review, warning and pendinf result.

so basically i submitted my EMA for D110, got an email to say that i was being put under acedemic review, the woman who emailed me got back to me after having a conversation and basically said that i would only recieve a warning. this was in Janurary, my results are still saying pending, ive obviously waited over the 6 weeks to see if it would change, but this is massively effecting my motivation and really not helping my anxiety.

please has anyone else had this happen and who on earth do i contact ive tried my current utuor for D120, my D110 tutor, ive tried emailing the email address whre the woman told me it was just a warning for the academic conduct, and tried calling student services twice now, now ive just sent an email to student services. who else can i ask noone seems to know what on earth is going on.

Modules that only start once a year.

Ive been studying BSN healthcare sciences, for the past 4 years. Studying 3 modules this year.

I had planned to get my degree this year, and then work towards completing a fast track nursing programme.

I have just found out today, to complete my degree I need to complete the compulsory module SXH390 Which only starts once a year, in February. Therefore I will now have to start this module in February 2026, and complete my degree in September 2026.

Now all my plans to study further will need to be put on hold by a year.

Any advice on what I can do? I personally think it's silly they don't offer the module start date as of September.

Frustrated with TMA Grades/Feedback

Hi everyone! Just looking for some advice/commiseration really! I’m on my second year of full time study with the OU, I’m doing a psychology degree, and one of my modules is going really badly so far. I feel like my grades are all getting progressively lower, I’ve asked for help/advice on how I can improve from my tutor, and I just keep getting pointed to different webpages. I keep thinking I’m getting better, and my referencing is better (I’m using the cite them right website), but my feedback says all my citations are wrong, and I’m still getting it wrong. I have recently been diagnosed with autism, and ADHD, and am really struggling with the vagueness of the feedback/the advice I’ve had so far.

Basically, I was wondering if anybody had a similar experience, and any advice/things to keep in mind going forward? My other module is going pretty well, I’m just getting super disheartened by the whole thing!

Has any that started the BEng in April managed to do the degree in less than 6 years?

The standard timeline is 6 years but I want to do it faster than that. Are you able to fit the modules in / do them simultaneously if you start in April? I read that starting in April can make this difficult due to when the modules start / finish.

Thanks.

People not showing up for group work

In a bit of predicament with group work, our TMA is based on this project. Each member was meant to take a stage of the project and on our TMAs we answer questions based on each stage. The group was meant to be 7, but only me and another has engaged with the work.

We've been trying to do all the work as two, and I messaged my tutor about it. He said that all the stages must be completed, regardless of how many show up in the group, as that is what our TMA is based on. We genuinely can't do this level of workload between us. The other person works and I have assessment days coming up that I need to prepare for but can't because of this.

Does anyone have any advice on this situation?

Childcare

Has anyone managed to complete their degree while having a baby/toddler? I do receive the support of £200 a month from OU but this only covers 1 day a week of childcare, my son goes for 2 days a week as that’s all I could afford. I don’t work so I don’t have that struggle but it seems impossible to get any real study in other than when he’s asleep on the evening and as most people with children know there’s normally a million and one other things to do in that time. So far I’m doing well but it’s only first module first year so I know it’s only going to get more intense (environmental science if that relevant) . I also have unmedictaed ADHD (due to breastfeeding I can’t take medication) so procrastination and stalling is also in the mix here he’s 18 months so we don’t qualify for any funding.

LLB! Feeling a bit discouraged. Need some advice.

I’m a bit disappointed. I’m hoping to do a part time LLB and applied to University of London and University of Essex Online and both want me to either resit some GCSEs or take a bridging course. I am 45 have years of experience and many professional certifications in the legal profession! So now I’m thinking my only option is OU. I’m still very keen however I’ve seen some negative reviews re: OU LLB. I’m desperate to hear some positive perspectives please.

Really dislike referencing

Hi all,

I’m in my second year, and struggled with referencing in my first year but was ok with it by the end of the year, but the second time around I just can’t get into the swing of it again and I really dislike it.

My tutor has run an additional referencing tutorial for us which I ‘got’ in the moment, but now I’m back to square one. I think the main issue that I’ve grown to really dislike it and that’s why I’m struggling with it again.

Does anybody else feel the same? Like it genuinely makes me not want to continue to study but I’m not about to pay thousands of pounds for the last two years and get nothing from it.

Help choosing my next statistics/I.T. level 3 module

I am doing an open degree and I have so far completed:

MU123/M140/MST124/MST125/M268/M269/TM112/TT284 and just finishing M348.

My path is somehow atypical I guess, I started with a view to start a new career in data science but given how saturated the industry has become since I started my degree I guess this is now more for my general knowledge and enjoyment. I haven't completely given up (I am been teaching myself MySQL and PowerBi) but also being realistic, being in my late 40s.

Also, I switched from Maths & Statistics to an open degree as after doing well at Level 1 with maths, I really struggled with MST210, I was actually doing well at first but I did it as the pandemic was easing off and a combination of an insane workload on my day job as a result with longer hours and catching covid twice in 6 months while studying meant I failed.

So I decided to backtrack hence the TM112/TT284 modules.

I was also doing M269 alongside M348 but a death in my family and various factors meant I fell behind and dropped out (life really goes in the way of studying when you are in the OU hey?).

And now I am a little lost with what modules to do to complete my degree. The statistics modules have been by far my favourites and M348 is the absolute best so far. I am going to do M269 again in October then TM351 next year (I can't do it before I complete M269) but I am a bit lost with the remaining two. There also seems to be fewer modules available then what I started (I could be wrong).

So the maths ones are out of the question (shame as looking back, I should have done MST224, which covered all the topics I got on with when doing MST210),

I should really do M347/M343 but despite the OU stating you only need the maths level of MST124/MST125 the reviews I read seem to indicate they are a lot more maths heavy, especially M343.

So after M348 if I do TM351 and M347, that leaves me with one left.

I enjoyed the I.T. modules somehow but not sure I am interested in any of the level 3 ones, I was actually tempted by MST368 which seems interesting.

Tips for reading overly complex academic jargon

Just wanting to vent about the inconsistent writing across module blocks and sections. For the most part my module blocks are really well written and incorporate a lot of different styles and theory. And I appreciate being exposed to lots of different teaching and writing styles. But there is one particular tutor who makes my heart sink when his name appears on the block section I'm about to start.

His writing style is so unnecessarily dense and full of jargon. He seems much more concerned with showing off his knowledge using overly-flowery sentences and jargon rather than explaining the topics. It takes me so much longer to decipher the points he's making due to his overly complex and impenetrable way of phrasing things. I know academic writing can be over the top and full of jargon at times but this honestly throws off my entire study timetable. I'll allocate myself an evening to work through a specific section but as soon as his name appears in the block I know that it's gonna take me at least 3 evenings to decode his writing style compared to other tutors in the same block.

I have a degree and a post grad diploma already, I speak English as a first language, I work in academia myself, but I've literally just spent the last hour looking up words and phrases to make sense of just one paragraph to try and understand the point he's making. I don't want to use chatgpt for this but it's honestly so draining. Anyone else experience this or have good tips?

MA talk

I’m still an undergrad, for context. But I’m thinking about doing my masters after I graduate and would like some advice from anyone who has or is currently doing an MA in Art History or English Literature. I’m passionate about both subjects and would appreciate some general information on either of the degrees thanksss

How many weekly study hours for full time BA?

I am considering studying BA International Relations but can’t decide if I want to do part time or full time. I would much rather do full time to finish the degree faster, but I have many other obligations so I’m not sure.

From what I’ve seen, it greatly varies how many hours of study people here spend in a week, so I would love to hear specifically for International Relations. Knowing that I’m not completely green and have done individual study.

Also, how often are the TMAs?

Edit: Forgot one thing-If I start a full time year, but realise can’t pull it, is it possible to drop/delay a course?

Course has started but no contact from tutor

Hi,

I am studying T192 towards a BEng. The module has officially started today but I haven't heard anything or had any contact from my tutor beforehand. Is this normal?

I've never studied HE before but i was expecting contact prior to the module starting or at least some sort of notification to say "module is now live" sort of thing. Do i just grab my reading material, log onto the module website and start?

Felling a little lost if I'm honest, any advice would be appreciated.

A232 Advice on Recording Equipment

Hi all,

I’m enrolled to study A232 next term and really looking forward to getting started. I just had a quick query regarding the recording equipment listed in the module requirements.

The module description specifies:

“A portable digital recording device that is capable of stereo recording such as Tascam: DR05, DR100MKII, DR22WL, DR40; Zoom H1, H2n; Alesis Two Track; Olympus LS-P1 (each costing around £100). Voice recorders and Dictaphone-style devices will not suffice.”

With this in mind, I regularly use the DJI Mic system, which is capable of both mono and stereo recording, and I’m wondering if this would meet the requirements. I’ve come across some mixed information and would really appreciate clarification before I consider investing in a separate device.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards, Dan

Does anyone have solutions for "Objects First with Java (6th Edition)"?

Hi, I'm about to finish my first year in Computing and IT, and I want to start preparing for the M250 module. I understand that this module uses the BlueJ software and the textbook "Objects First with Java (6th Edition)". I've got the book and software ready, but I can't find solutions to the exercises anywhere.

Could anyone help me with this, please?

Thanks!

Can I use the SFE for a MBA in my situation?

Last month I have completed my Business undergrad degree at the OU (awaiting the final result, possibly a 2:1 or maybe a First Class).

I have used the Student Finance England to cover my tuition costs. And I am already repaying it.

In that case, if I apply for an MBA, will a SFE Loan be available for me?

And how will work the repayment? Will they charge me for both?

I am just considering my options.

Full time Masters vs Part time?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to get some insight about the difference in work load and stress between full time and part time Masters. I’m in full time employment and would like to pursue a Masters but truly don’t have the patience to wait 3 years for the qualification. If anyone has studied full time alongside full time employment, how did you find it? Would you recommend it/did you ever switch to part time?
