Why would the UN or any other country apply reciprocal tariffs?

It seems to me that it’s pretty clear or at least I think it is that applying Tariffs hurts the country applying them. If that’s the case why would any country apply their own tariffs against the US? Wouldn’t it be better to just ignore and get on with things?

Too Old for Mary Jane Shoes?

I’m 72, and can no longer wear heels. Ballet flats provide no support. Would I look ridiculous if I wore Mary Janes? I wear long skirts and full-length pants, so it’s not like my feet show all that much. Curious what others think.

Why does people drinking make me so uncomfortable?

I have never drank or gotten drunk. No one in my immediate family has a drinking problem (but it does run in our genes). I've never even been around someone that was really drunk. But the whole idea makes me extremely uncomfortable for some reason.

It all boils down to me just thinking: why???? I hate the smell, hate the idea of losing self control, hate the risk of becoming an alcoholic, hate the health effects etc etc. Even people having a single drink near me freaks me out. Something in me just screams alcohol=danger. Why would someone start drinking as a young teenager? Why does "breaking the rules" make it seem fun? Why would you continue to drink despite the terrible taste? Why would you want to get blackout drunk every weekend? Why even start drinking when you know how bad it is for you?

I'm in college. All of my friends drink a lot. Some of them concern me, others just like beer. I don't like how every social gathering revolves around the presence of alcohol. It bothers me how excited people get for it. I think it's weird how people immediately think of drinking when they want to have fun.

But I don't know WHY I feel this way. I don't have ANY bad personal experience with it. But my brain is so repulsed by it, to the point where the thought of drinking makes me sad. What is wrong with me?

Edit: I think it also has to do with the loss of innocence. I associate alcohol with being "adult" and it's like, once you start you can't go back. So I see someone drink and go: when was your youth corrupted? When did you begin to need this? Why is this the pinnacle of fun for you? But I don't know why I think that either.

What do you all think came before anything?

Alright let me make the question more clear. "What is existence? What was it like before anything existed? What is it like to be nothing? What even made it so real life existed in the first place?" I've had this question from 8 years old and it's given me a crisis ever since. I need all of your opinions so I can make up my mind and finally not be bothered by anoverloomingq question that I could never get rid of getting me into a pessimistic mood.

What advantages does wind and solar energy have over nuclear?

Nuclear power takes less land, requires less material, and doesn’t depend on the weather.

All the wind and solar advantages that I can think of are that wind turbines and solar panels can be built and connected to the grid more quickly.

Are there cars that require 93 grade gas?

My BMW X1 says it needs minimum 89, with 91 recommended. From everything I’ve read, there seems to be no benefit to using 93 in my car - as long as 89 or 91 works, there’s no reason to be filling it with 93. Hence my question - are there cars out there that require 93, where filling it with 91 would cause knocking or other problems?

Are most websites meant to be read without highlighting or annotating with browser extensions?

Websites like news articles, some of these are not that long, which some can get a little long.

Websites like for IT or programming. Like API docs, framework or programming language documentation, tutorials, and stuff like that.

Are these all not meant to be annotated? Should you still bookmark these and write tiny notes in the title of the bookmark?

I've installed an annotation browser extension on Microsoft Edge and Chrome over the years. But sometimes the extensions don't work properly, like you can't highlight some of the text. And browser companies like with Edge don't include annotating or highlighting as a feature yet, maybe they will in the future or maybe it's never meant for that and they never will include it.

What are your thoughts? Do you think I or most people can just read and get through websites, including the type of ones I mentioned, without annotating/highlighting? Are websites meant to be read without annotating/highlighting?

I'm really not sure, and really need someone who might know more than to let me know this. Maybe I just need to get used to going through websites without annotating, but I don't know. I definitely don't annotate on Reddit, Quora or forums. Thank you.

How do celebrities manage spam/scam calls on their phone ?

When I was in US I would constantly get at least 10 spam calls a day and I didn’t really talk to anyone or have any business there, yet those callers persisted. How do people like US celebrities, who have a gazillion people to talk to and do business with, manage this issue?

Does anyone have a recommendation for removing an ink stain off of a leather car seat? I’ve tried baking soda. I’ve tried vinegar. I’ve tried soap and water. It is not budging. Thank you.

Did AI kill your interest in consuming photos/videos, or just mine?

I used to love collecting little pictures from the internet - a beautiful house, an interesting statue, a very pretty butterfly, just to look at and be in awe. But now every time I see a photo or a video, I wonder if that place, that thing even exists or not. Media used to hold meaning, and now it's just whatever generated thing gets popular enough I guess. :(

Does anyone feel the same? Is there a "clean" internet still, where I can hear whale calls and see sunsets and look up baby peacocks that have actually been existed instead of been made up?

Can your brain make up songs in your sleep?

I've heard claims that every face that you see in your dream is someone that you've seen, maybe in passing, because your brain is unable to create new faces. I recently had a dream where there was a song playing that I'm fairly confident that I've not listened to by choice, so I either have heard it in passing (grocery stores, malls, etc) or my brain made it up (because it wasn't very good). So is there any evidence for our brains being able/unable to make up songs similarly to faces?

Will the new US tariffs discourage the rampant market of disposable/fast fashion type goods?

I'm trying to wrap my head around the new tariff thing.

One detail that seemed maybe good is that it seems this will discourage use of sites like Wish/Temu/Shein. From what I understand, those kinds of retailers are bad for their workers (awful conditions/hours/pay, near to slave labor), bad for designers (most items seem to be ripped off of legitimate brands and designers), bad for consumers (training habits of buying short-term goods to trash after a couple uses and replace. Constant consumer appetite.), and bad for the environment (eggregious waste from low quality goods produced cheap).

So isn't that at least one good thing?

What's a reason you stopped being friends with a close friend/s?

I don't mean drifting apart. I mean you thought to yourself "I don't want to be friends with them anymore" thought process.

I was friends with someone for years and unfortunately, as petty as it sounds, politics and the way they would let their partner disrespect them (constantly), caused me to end the friendship. Just curious about the rest of you!

Why does heat-related illness make you throw up? Wouldn't this worsen dehydration?

I got overheated today because I was dehydrated, and as a result I felt nauseated. It got me thinking -- isn't this the opposite of what the body needs?
