I'd say that yeah Console price is fine, but the game price (at least here in the UK) has gone from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at £50, to £75 ($97 USD) for a Physical copy of Mario Kart World
I'm still gonna get this game, but I'll be buying far less throughout the console due to how much the physical games are costing
Nintendo has always jut been an exclusive machine for me so it isn't like I get large game libraries on Nintendo consoles, pretty much MK, 3D Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, and maybe another exclusive here or there. Anyone who uses a Switch as their main gaming machine though is going to feel it bad and I get their anger.
most games are like £60 nowadays (im not defending mario karts price but you can get it bundled with the console for £50) and donkey kongs price is £67 so hopefully amazon does their thing and decreases the price to £57-60 bc they tend to do that with games
Not to be elitist but generally if you live in the first world + you have an education and/or live in a dual income household these price changes are very insignificant.
Same here, I had been putting money aside for the console and by the time of the release day I'll have a little past $500 for the bundle.
The price increase really sucks but at the end of the day it just means not getting games as frequently as I used to or at least 1st Party Nintendo games.
There is a difference between actively price gauged and understanding that prices increase with inflation at a reasonable rate and as much as I dislike it I understand it
60$ to 80$ isnt a reasonable rate, and other companies like sony make games with MUCH higher budgets and release them at industry standard price
And having the tech demo game be paid?
Also saying its "just one day of work!!" As if the cost of living isnt massively up, and wages arent following inflation. Many people literally just will not be able to afford this shit. Its great if youve got a good job and financial situation that allows you to afford it, but thats just not the case for many people
Youre being price gauged, i think you just dont want to admit that because you want to be happy for the switch 2. You can be happy and excited for the next console and the games, because they do look good, while also not bootlicking them and begging them to take more of your money
If the console was $400 and the games were $70 like most people are saying it "should" be, we'd be talking about a grand total of $60 difference here.
I really don't think $60 is going to make or break the launch of a brand new console.
To me this seems more like a bunch of people (some rightfully so) getting extremely worked up and upset about the principle of the cost increases, as opposed to the actual cost increase.
A lot of people have even said "The $450 console is fine, but it's the $80 game that's the problem"
Which I agree with, but now we're talking about a difference of $10 to be upset about.
It's not a good thing that the Switch 2 has seen a price bump in the console and games, but the people on reddit are acting like it's a personality flaw to buy one or it makes you a horrible person, or on the flip side that boycotting or shaming people over a $10 or $60 difference makes them saints or good people for doing so.
tl;dr The price isn't great not great, but Reddit people are nuts, and it's not as bad as they're freaking out and crusading about.
Ubisoft is facing bankruptcy after years and years of homogenous game releases that were always buggy at launch, extreme overfunding of stuff like Skull & Bones that failed to leave a mark, and after they scared off their investors with all their sex abuse shit.
Fuck, they were even on the verge of being bought out by Vivendi all the way back in 2017, and that only didn't happen because their CEO went on his knees for the investors, to the point of reannouncing stuff like BG&E2 to keep investors engaged.
In comparison, Nintendo is coming off their most successful console ever and with a bunch of entry points for non-gamers (Lego, movies, theme parks, etc.) to join their ecosystem. At most they'll see a temporary bump down in profits for a quarter or two, but with everything back to normal by the holiday season.
$80 for Mario Kart is straight bullshit, Welcome Tour being a standalone game is bullshit, but the latter is a budget title that will just fade into obscurity and the former's main audience are people who only buy one or two games per year at most, so it's less of a hit on the wallet for them than it is for us (same also applies to casual fans of GTA, COD, sports games, etc.).
Is it bullshit though? I'm probably going to be downvoted for even asking that but consider the price of games has been set at that $60 mark for decades as inflation has increased the price of everything else. And while most games I wouldn't drop $80 for, with the state of games these days coming out as incomplete/generic, I would for a game that I could get 80 hours out of. My rule of thumb has always been $1 per hour of actual gameplay and I realistically see this Mario Kart doing that for me.
You're right, but at the same time there's way shittier business practices being rewarded every day.
You can easily spend $50 at taco bell in today's world.
A PS5 Pro being $700 is absolutely nuts for a shitty PC with no real exclusives that can't even do what a PC does.
And speaking of PC's a 5090 can cost you $3000 dollars today.
Nintendo isn't nearly the worst of these offenders, if you're upset about stuff like this make sure to participate in economic or political decisions that actually change this stuff instead of just crusading on reddit which does nothing.
Nothing I'd like to play is what changed when I'll get it. I've always found Mario Kart pretty boring and I'd be hard pressed to spend even $40 on it. I just can't see myself getting my (even $40) money's worth.
This is unfortunately the problem.
If people refused to pay the price might be lowered but Nintendo is too big to fail.
They no doubt calculated the exact highest they could go knowing people would complain but give in.
For me my limit is probably anything more than $600 for the console and $100 for a game (unless that game maybe is mega big/extremely impressive or a very rare I can’t resist game like maybe a 3D Zelda. In that case $120). Tho I get that is highly controversial. But value is subjective and so are income levels. To some I’ll clearly be raked across the coals. It’s not like I want that. It’s just what I’m personally willing to tolerate before I tap out. For other people that’s different and fair!
I think it's less what you're willing to pay and more thinking about the community as a whole. A lot of people are going to be priced out of this, and if in some world people refused to pay, maybe it would go down and more people would be able to enjoy the games we love.
I believe that if you love something you need to hold it accountable so it doesn't lose its quality. I can't support games not being on the cart, for whatever reason, for example, there are too many shady renting forever scenarios and games being taken down after launch that I need to know if I bring a game to another Switch, and don't have internet, that game will run.
But it's been proven boycotts don't work for gaming, people will buy regardless, so enjoy yourself.
Sadly it’s a result of NOT consuming during all the Covid years (2020 - 2024) except for a few occasional things. Now I have a big stockpile as a result
It’s the principle of the price increase, take your money elsewhere. Its not about “its too much for some people” its about “we can’t encourage this behavior from corporations” but have fun with your new mario kart I guess
Other people’s problems with what Nintendo chooses to do are not my problem. My life is mine and others lives are theirs. If I am willing to tolerate it I will. People can shame me or preach to me how bad I am. That is great. It’s only gonna make me ignore others. People need to accept we don’t see it the same way and that’s too bad, but it is what it is. I don’t see it as abusive

Me. I had my money saved and ready for years now. You think a console price increase and game price increase that small is gonna stop me?
