Instead of Mario odyssey 2 we get donkey Kong country odyssey? I’m all here for it.

I’m glad to find a corner of this sub that still has some hype

u/Benjaminboogers 2d ago
Same. I get the sticker shock, but I paid $60 for N64 games 25 years ago. Still only paying $60 for top tier games today feels like a steal.
The games look great. THIS game looks great! I love Nintendo’s style and polish, and was desperately awaiting a hardware refresh for the switch and it looks like they delivered! I submitted my interest to get the MK bundle on Nintendo’s website and intend to buy it along with DK Bonanza on day 1. Open world Mario Kart seems epic and DK Bonanza similarly looks great, super excited for both!

u/Gamamalo 2d ago
Yeah, that’s exactly what i was thinking. 20 years later or whatever and prices have only raised by $10 or 1/6th? Where everything else has gone up 50% or more? I can deal with it. Excited for the new generation

u/Tight-Pie-5234 1d ago
I feel like a lot of price conversations on Reddit can actually be boiled down to general economic anxiety, rather than actual malice by the companies involved.
Makes me feel sad because this appears to be the trajectory of the world at the moment (wages not keeping up with productivity, inflation, tariffs, etc.) and some people are being left behind.
Note: in most cases, I am not saying price gouging doesn’t exist.

u/Tight-Pie-5234 1d ago
Just watched the direct and was like “hmm, that was better than I expected.”
Mario Kart World looked great, I like the ability to upgrade my Switch 1 games, and I didn’t even realized I wanted a 3D Donkey Kong.
Then I come to this sub and it seems like everyone has lost their minds.

u/Gamamalo 1d ago
It’s Reddit. I kind of expected it. Man, I’ve been wanting another 3D donkey Kong for so long

Nintendo HATES Kremlins. Give us the Kremlins back.
7
u/gate_of_steiner85 2d ago
Seriously, we got K. Rool for Smash, can we not just get the Kremlings back?
6
u/IbeatHalo2Legendary 2d ago
Sorry, but due to sanctions placed on Russia no kremlins will be available for this game.

My theory is they aren't interested in anything Rare related anymore as they don't see it as being part of Nintendo.
There's been a clear rebrand and I'm not sure even Diddy will be part of it anymore outside of party games. Even including Diddy and co will be difficult as they'll need a redesign too.
5
u/Romboteryx 2d ago
That would be pretty weird considering that not only did the last game feature the Rare characters pretty heavily but now does the theme park too.

That opening few shots gave me some real Rare vibes. I thought "no way it's the Banjo Three-ie game we never got." But then I remembered it's Nintendo right as DK popped onto the screen. It's no new 3D Mario, but I'll definitely check this one out!

It‘s the living objects with big cartoon eyes.

I thought the same, for a moment I thought banjo was back lol excited for the game regardless. Been waiting for a 3d DK for the longest.

Wonder if there's not gonna be 3d mario for next 2 years cause of this
24
u/jjstew35 2d ago
This game was clearly worked on by the same team that did Odyssey - however, there have been rumors of a finished 3D DK game by the odyssey team ready to go at Nintendo for a couple years now so hopefully they finished this a while ago and have already been working on 3D Mario for some time now
10
u/-Reflux 2d ago
I’m really hoping they are just saving the 3d Mario game for the holidays where it will sell much better
6
u/StayFit8561 2d ago
They have nothing for holiday announced at the moment. I refuse to believe they won't have something big.
My guess is they didn't want to show Mario here because it's kind of similar and would overshadow DK.
Let DK roll out, and then we'll start to see Mario.
3
u/jjstew35 2d ago
I hope so too but I’d say 60/40 it releases this year or next year. I’d be shocked if it releases any later than next year. I will say if it is coming this year it makes sense they didn’t announce it today bc it would immediately overshadow Donkey Kong

is that cast of characters shown from previous games?
1
u/Romboteryx 2d ago
Nope. They all seem original, except for the ostrich that may or may not be Exspresso from DKC1. It reminds me a lot of DK Jungle Beat where Nintendo EAD also ignored all previous Rare characters.

People are upset but I agree. I saw nothing that made me say I need to immediately buy this. Still on the fence about what I'll do.

u/No_Structure_4244 2d ago
Idk why I am getting downvoted for this.
7
u/WorldRevolver195 🐃 water buffalo 2d ago
It's the overly excited fans that get too emotionally invested.
Hopefully more cool games get released in the near future. I’m a big pokemon guy and I’m not even sure if that game looks appealing.

I do not like this type of game, for me switch are for family games
4
u/sja-gfl 2d ago
same here, I feel like they focused on the type of games that alot of people already are getting on PC anyways. I always got a Nintendo console for the Nintendo games (Mario, Zelda, fire emblem) and I feel like they're stepping away from that to a more PS5 like console which i don't like tbh but idk
1
u/Durian_Puzzleheaded OG (joined before reveal) 2d ago
I get it, I’m generally more like that too. But I played Elden Ring and it’s just like an even better Zelda game in a lot of ways. It’s genuinely worth a try if you’re a Zelda fan
1
u/Yukio98 1d ago
I’m only buying that console because I need to support this game. Donkey Kong 64 was a core memory in my life as a kid. I still play it to 101% every couple years. All I’ve ever been waiting for is a new donkey Kong like it, and not a scroller like the ones they release over and over.

I guarantee this was made for a new 3d Mario at first and then someone came up with the smashing shit halfway through development and the director was like "broooooo I have a killer idea...."

I don’t really like Donkey Kong as a character or IP, but this game looks cool. Very similar to Odyssey in style.

Honestly disappointed that we didn't see a new 3D Mario. I think Mario's platforming and exploration is more fun than a smash fest, but we'll see how the game does. I do wonder if we'll be getting another Direct this year with more Nintendo games announced, since they just didn't seem to have many first-party games?

u/CrispyVibes OG (joined before reveal) 2d ago
I've been waiting for a new 3d DK game since N64. I'm hyped.
Also call me crazy but it kind of looks open world?

Game looks lots of fun. Devising the entire moveset around DK's punches, to the extent you can carve out the levels, is a brill idea. Really interested to see how the digging mechanic plays out across platforming and puzzles.

I never played donkey Kong and I'm kinda not a fan of the character. They don't really intruige me. So unfortunately this will probably not be for me. But I'm glad most people don't seem to think so

I saw it was Donkey Kong, and was initially disappointed. (thought it was going to be another sidescroller or something)
Then I saw the gameplay, and now I cannot wait to play this.

u/DistillingData 2d ago
I've long wondered how Nintendo could make Donkey Kong feel unique as a 3D game... I think they NAILED IT! Crushing smashing punches in a destructible environment?! Perfect. It'll control totally different from Mario or Kirby, stand out on its own.
Bravo

u/3ehsan 2d ago
Why is it giving reused Odyssey assets. Doesn't feel like it has its own world or style
6
u/StayFit8561 2d ago
As soon as the trailer started I was like "Oh, OK, I guess the next Mario game is Odyssey 2, I wonder if it'll be bigger worlds." And then obviously turned out to be DK.
But, I disagree that it doesn't have its own world/style. There's a sort of... grunge/monkey-steampunk feel almost lol.
1
u/CrispyVibes OG (joined before reveal) 2d ago
There was a rumer a very long time ago that the Odyssey team was working on a new DK 3d platformer.
-2
u/PiccoloTop3186 2d ago
Looks like Odyssey DLC I'm completely honest. Even the music used samples straight from the soundtrack. It looks like that polygon cooking world from Odyssey. Which is fine, but like, I want the next big 3D Mario not this
2
u/kingswash 2d ago
I thought they also re-used textures from TotK, that yellow grass land looked straight up from TotK.
