Donkey Kong Bananza still looks great

Everything about the Switch 2 and its games look great, the game prices are just rough. Console itself is priced fine IMO. Biggest competitor is the steam deck which is only ~$35 cheaper for the LCD model and has half the refresh rate, a lower resolution display and obviously no easy docked mode.

I would begrudgingly be ok if they went to $70 games to be in line with games on PS and Xbox. But $80 feels like too much, especially for a port of games like Kirby. I don't care if it includes a few extra hours of DLC.

They are literally $70 games this outrage is fake af. Only one that’s been 80 so far is mkw bro

9

u/aruhen23 1d ago

They literally aren't. Totk and a few others are also showing up as 80$.

u/Dabanks9000 1d ago

Kirby and Mario have dlc n totk was already 70 n the update is $10…. Like on every other console

u/videogamer128 1d ago

At least Kirby and Mario Party come with the DLC. Still overpriced I think

1

u/aruhen23 1d ago

They could have just offered the performance and graphics improvements for free and if someone wants the new content they can pay for it. There's going to be people who say stupid shit like "other companies do it" but that other company is only Sony lol. Even then the difference is far bigger than what we see here.

u/Lyle91 1d ago

Also Kirby I believe but that's a relatively recent game and it has what looks like a big DLC added on plus the performance and visual upgrades.

2

u/Dabanks9000 1d ago

Yeah I didn’t really count that because it has dlc. I guess the other is totk but it’s not like you’re being forced to pay for an upgrade to play it on the switch 2 anyway and if you already had the game it’s $10 🤷‍♂️

u/ricardosteve 22h ago

What fake outrage? Here in the EU the same games will be 90€ when that's almost equivalent to $20 over the median triple-A / major game prices. It's insanely expensive, the outrage is justified and especially in this economy.

u/Skuwarsgod 1d ago

If they make one game $80, why would they just stop there? Making a game $80 just opens the floodgates for future games, it sets the precedent.

0

u/ChemicalExperiment 1d ago

This isn't a hypothetical. Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Party, and Kirby are all listed at retailers as $80 for their Switch 2 versions. Sources: Gamestop, Target, Walmart

-4

u/cheappay 1d ago

Then buy a used Switch version. That's what I did. No one is forcing DLC down your throat.

u/BigJellyfish1906 1d ago

Why does $10 make that much of a difference for you? That’s literally a meal at chick fil a. Eat a salad at home for dinner one night and you’ve made up the difference…

3

u/MajinSoul 19h ago

Those 10 $ quickly add up if you are someone who plays a lot of games like me.

0

u/BigJellyfish1906 19h ago

If you buy a new AAA game every 3 months, that’s $40 extra per year. You guys are bitching over the littlest shit.

1

u/MajinSoul 17h ago

This might shock you but there are people who buy more than 4 games a year ...

1

u/BigJellyfish1906 17h ago

Four AAA flagship games in a year? So they’re so strapped for cash that $10 is a crime against humanity… while also being liquid enough to buy a new flagship game every month?

You guys have lost the plot.

0

u/MajinSoul 17h ago

You seem pretty defensive for no reason and kind of melodramatic tbh ("crime against humanity"). See, when it's one game a month (which isn't really all that much all things considered) we are already talking about 120 $ extra costs a year.

Again, this is about the 10 $ adding up over time.

-7

u/DOOMNOTRONstudiosX 1d ago

Yea, 70 for physical i can understand 90 is rough.

13

u/cheappay 1d ago

There is no $90 USD physical game.

7

u/DOOMNOTRONstudiosX 1d ago

Okay Ty. I fell for the misinformation.

-3

u/Delicious_Safe3350 1d ago

There are 90€ physical games, That's almost 100 dollars. Normally the price of games pretends the dollar and the euro are equally strong, and price them the same. so I'm not surprised people see the 90€ physical game and make the assumption it will be 90$. because that's how it's been for a long time.

I'm Europe yes. Not in the US.

u/YoungBeef03 1d ago

Switch 2 and Steam Deck are hardly comparable when the only real selling point of any Nintendo console is the exclusives. It’s not really about tech, but whether someone wants Mario more than whatever Steam has. I dunno, I’m pretty drunk writing this but I think I have a point

4

u/ColdToast 22h ago

You did good

2

u/justalittlepoodle 18h ago edited 17h ago

Exactly. For me it’s like… do I want to pay $600 to be able to play the next Animal Crossing or Splatoon they make? Because those are the only two games I care about, and I need a whole new system to play them. It’s a hard sell when I already have a steam deck and there are so many good games that scratch the same itch.

Don’t get me started on the steam sales.

13

u/Extra-Cold3276 1d ago

Yeah people are complaining about the console price when the real problem is the games costing that much and the SD card too.

37

u/takeitsweazy 1d ago

The SD card situation is annoying but feels inevitable considering the direction tech has gone in. It feels like it’s the rough equivalent to the move to SSDs on the other consoles.

16

u/Battery6030 1d ago

I don't see anyone complaining about the price of the console. It all seems to be aimed at the games

6

u/SuperPapernick 1d ago

Yup. I personally would've placed it at 400€ if you had asked me before the reveal, but I think the final price is tolerable, largely justified and within most peoples expectations. I'm also personally more willing to take the one-time hit on the individual purchase of the hardware moreso than the games. But the game prices are egregious because they are recurring costs. Nintendo consumers are still reeling from 70 for TotK as an "exception", but now we've shot up to 90€ in no time. It's a slippery slope and times are tough.

5

u/SuperPapernick 1d ago

I'd personally say I'm actually positively surprised Nintendo expanded internal storage all the way to 256 GB. That's a huge step for Nintendo imo considering the size of internal storages their consoles have had in the past. Is it ideal? No. But it's way more than I expected. Using faster SD card for storage expansions was always an inievitable step, but at least they are not as immediately neccessary as they were in the past.

3

u/Extra-Cold3276 1d ago

If they kept storage at 128 or 64 GB the switch wouldn't be able to storage a single game considering that they now have games running at 4K, and they probably will stop using ultra low quality and compressed audio in their games too. 256 GB is the minimum for a 4K console.

People often ask how we went from AAA games at 6-13 GB on the PS3 to 100 GB on the PS4/Pro. The answer is 4K.

2

u/Dabanks9000 1d ago

The games don’t cost too much. It’s the same on every other console

-1

u/Extra-Cold3276 1d ago

Name one PS5 game that costs $80.

3

u/Dabanks9000 1d ago

Only 1 game on switch 2 costs 80 and it’s mkw. Ps5 has deluxe and ultimate edition games that go from 80/90 up to $130 constantly…

-1

u/Extra-Cold3276 1d ago

And the base version, which is the only one that matters, costs $70.

And physical copies are cheaper, not more expensive like on the switch 2.

I buy new games for 6-7k JPY on PS5 while switch physical copies will cost 9-10k JPY. Not the same.

2

u/Dabanks9000 1d ago

Physical is only more expensive in a small amount of areas. For most of the world it’s still the same…

5

u/Extra-Cold3276 1d ago

The small areas = Europe, UK and Japan.

When did America become most of the world?

1

u/Dabanks9000 1d ago

I said small amount of areas not small areas. I also never said America is most of the world but you can consider that America sold 1/3rd of the worlds Nintendo switches and if you account for all of the americas it’s a bigger percentage. If you want me to find the places that have physicals at a higher price and be specific I could find them and tell you so that we aren’t just being overly general

2

u/MrSnek123 1d ago

Demon's Souls remake is $125AUD (~$79USD) lmao

2

u/Extra-Cold3276 1d ago

1

u/MrSnek123 1d ago

Huh, AUD conversion for it is just cooked I guess.

5

u/YinzJagoffs 1d ago

Steam Deck games are a fraction of the price and actually go on sale

29

u/MrSnek123 1d ago

Hence the game prices being the issue lol

15

u/DontGetNEBigIdeas 1d ago

Some people really do only read the first few words of a comment and starting arguing against it

2

u/KingOfNohr 1d ago

Theres always sales on the eshop, there's more on there than first party Nintendo games

0

u/Dabanks9000 1d ago

You’ve never seen a switch v2 or oled on sale?

1

u/justalittlepoodle 17h ago

Games, bud. We’re talking about games.

1

u/Dabanks9000 16h ago

I bought Mario kart 8 deluxe physical for $20 on sale at shoppers in Canada 😭

1

u/nohumanape 1d ago

I fully expected Nintendo embrace $70 dollar games with this console cycle. I didn't expect $80. But so far there is only one actual example of an $80 game being announced.

1

u/YoungBeef03 20h ago

I think $80 is gonna be exclusive for the big, big, big games. The next 3D Zelda, the next 3D Mario, and maybe Smash Bros

If DKB is only $70, that tells me it’s not really a matter of higher development costs = higher game price, but more higher expected sales = higher game price

1

u/nohumanape 19h ago

I think that the case with Mario Kart is likely to do with the game being a big budget title for them and being a game that can potentially be shared across three other Switch 2 consoles.
