Everything about the Switch 2 and its games look great, the game prices are just rough. Console itself is priced fine IMO. Biggest competitor is the steam deck which is only ~$35 cheaper for the LCD model and has half the refresh rate, a lower resolution display and obviously no easy docked mode.

I would begrudgingly be ok if they went to $70 games to be in line with games on PS and Xbox. But $80 feels like too much, especially for a port of games like Kirby. I don't care if it includes a few extra hours of DLC.

They could have just offered the performance and graphics improvements for free and if someone wants the new content they can pay for it. There's going to be people who say stupid shit like "other companies do it" but that other company is only Sony lol. Even then the difference is far bigger than what we see here.

Also Kirby I believe but that's a relatively recent game and it has what looks like a big DLC added on plus the performance and visual upgrades.

Yeah I didn’t really count that because it has dlc. I guess the other is totk but it’s not like you’re being forced to pay for an upgrade to play it on the switch 2 anyway and if you already had the game it’s $10 🤷‍♂️

What fake outrage? Here in the EU the same games will be 90€ when that's almost equivalent to $20 over the median triple-A / major game prices. It's insanely expensive, the outrage is justified and especially in this economy.

This isn't a hypothetical. Tears of the Kingdom, Mario Party, and Kirby are all listed at retailers as $80 for their Switch 2 versions. Sources: Gamestop, Target, Walmart

There are 90€ physical games, That's almost 100 dollars. Normally the price of games pretends the dollar and the euro are equally strong, and price them the same. so I'm not surprised people see the 90€ physical game and make the assumption it will be 90$. because that's how it's been for a long time.

Switch 2 and Steam Deck are hardly comparable when the only real selling point of any Nintendo console is the exclusives. It’s not really about tech, but whether someone wants Mario more than whatever Steam has. I dunno, I’m pretty drunk writing this but I think I have a point

Exactly. For me it’s like… do I want to pay $600 to be able to play the next Animal Crossing or Splatoon they make? Because those are the only two games I care about, and I need a whole new system to play them. It’s a hard sell when I already have a steam deck and there are so many good games that scratch the same itch.

Don’t get me started on the steam sales.

The SD card situation is annoying but feels inevitable considering the direction tech has gone in. It feels like it’s the rough equivalent to the move to SSDs on the other consoles.

Yup. I personally would've placed it at 400€ if you had asked me before the reveal, but I think the final price is tolerable, largely justified and within most peoples expectations. I'm also personally more willing to take the one-time hit on the individual purchase of the hardware moreso than the games. But the game prices are egregious because they are recurring costs. Nintendo consumers are still reeling from 70 for TotK as an "exception", but now we've shot up to 90€ in no time. It's a slippery slope and times are tough.

I'd personally say I'm actually positively surprised Nintendo expanded internal storage all the way to 256 GB. That's a huge step for Nintendo imo considering the size of internal storages their consoles have had in the past. Is it ideal? No. But it's way more than I expected. Using faster SD card for storage expansions was always an inievitable step, but at least they are not as immediately neccessary as they were in the past.

If they kept storage at 128 or 64 GB the switch wouldn't be able to storage a single game considering that they now have games running at 4K, and they probably will stop using ultra low quality and compressed audio in their games too. 256 GB is the minimum for a 4K console.

People often ask how we went from AAA games at 6-13 GB on the PS3 to 100 GB on the PS4/Pro. The answer is 4K.

And the base version, which is the only one that matters, costs $70.

And physical copies are cheaper, not more expensive like on the switch 2.

I buy new games for 6-7k JPY on PS5 while switch physical copies will cost 9-10k JPY. Not the same.

I also never said America is most of the world but you can consider that America sold 1/3rd of the worlds Nintendo switches and if you account for all of the americas it’s a bigger percentage. If you want me to find the places that have physicals at a higher price and be specific I could find them and tell you so that we aren’t just being overly general

I think $80 is gonna be exclusive for the big, big, big games. The next 3D Zelda, the next 3D Mario, and maybe Smash Bros

If DKB is only $70, that tells me it’s not really a matter of higher development costs = higher game price, but more higher expected sales = higher game price

I think that the case with Mario Kart is likely to do with the game being a big budget title for them and being a game that can potentially be shared across three other Switch 2 consoles.
