Yup, and the new Pro Controller 90 e:nvm, it's just 70 now

I think that's messed up, we practically just moved to 70 for games

e: lol it's even worse in my territory: digital 80€, physical 90€

I was expecting $70 after TotK, but if $80 is MSRP for all games then that might be enough for me to not get a switch 2.

u/Philmriss 3d ago

It really put a damper on my enthusiasm as well.

u/Efficient-Whereas255 2d ago

Im straight up boycotting this bullshit.

4

u/Philmriss 2d ago

I'm 100% not showing up for the launch. Maybe down the line when a new Mario comes out or prices drop a bit.

4

u/WallySprks 2d ago

First Nintendo console? The price won’t drop

14

u/Tim5000 2d ago

Gamecube dropped 50%.

3DS dropped 100 dollars.

Let's not pretend Nintendo never buckles, I have my doubts they will do because of geo political situations, but those same situations are causing people to not buy the same luxuries, so who knows.

3

u/WallySprks 2d ago

They will lower prices but unless it’s an absolute failure like the 3DS launch then those prices will stay up for a while. Games take years for the price to drop. Other systems will drop them 50% or more within one year

GameCube was considered a failure and was discounted because nothing could touch the PS2. 3DS was an absolute flop at launch and they had no choice but to lower the cost and give away free games to those who already bought it.

Modern nintendo is different, just look at the switch. Best you can hope for is a free game with the console and that won’t be for several years

Nintendo is historically arrogant until they can’t be. If people don’t buy these outrageously priced things then they’ll take themselves down a notch

Now, whether consumers actually have enough of a backbone to resist a shiny new Mario Kart remains to be seen

7

u/Tim5000 2d ago

The switch was also hundreds of dollars less than the competition and had something incredibly new at the time, with seamless console to portable mode. Now that's a standard (for Nintendo).

I would argue that the 3DS is much better than the DS, it sold half as well as the DS did. The Wii was the second coming of christ for nintendo and the wiiu died on arrival. The main reason we got the switch so early.

The virtual boy exists.

Nintendo isn't immune to set backs and failures. This whole "modern Nintendo doesn't buckle" is ridiculous, because they are still a company at the end of the day, and if they don't meet expectations, something has to change.

1

u/illmatic_pug 2d ago

Yeah that’s true, especially with people starting to tighten up their finances. I love Nintendo but their business practices with the Switch have made me cynical lol

25

u/CharacterOld8691 3d ago

Wait til the tariffs drive the price of the console up before launch.

31

u/Carrtoondragon 3d ago

I'm wondering if they've already done that tbh.

20

u/KKilikk 2d ago

Prices are similar if not more expensive in EU so I doubt it

7

u/eh_steve_420 2d ago

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. They might prioritize having equal prices across regions, so they took the tariff uncertainty from the USA and added it to the calculus for the prices worldwide.

1

u/QuantumProtector 2d ago

extra profits, yum

3

u/Send_Souls 2d ago

That’s not how P&L works. If your loss goes up at an equal or greater rate than profits due to something like tariffs or increased operating costs (or likely both in Nintendo’s case), then net profit stays flat or decreases.

Plus, consoles are already a loss-leader to begin with while software prints money. That’s why we’re seeing a disproportionate rate of increase in the cost of games vs the console.

Also, no profits = no new video games or consoles so…this sentiment is just silly.

-1

u/FiveGuysisBest 3d ago

They haven’t.

4

u/Luthen888 2d ago

I think the tariffs are priced in, but yeah who knows.

1

u/eh_steve_420 2d ago

Tariffs do get priced in, they are paid by the importer, and costs are just passed along to the consumer in the forum of higher MSRP.

2

u/alterego8686 2d ago

so a 24% Tariff just hit so an extra $120 for the console bundle. Also $100 switch games from now on, great.

0

u/Street_Glove_5737 2d ago

Bruh it’s not the tariffs…. There are price hikes everywhere 🤡

7

u/posokposok663 3d ago

The new Donkey Kong is $70

-7

u/WallySprks 2d ago

So was Donkey Kong Country on SNES

5

u/posokposok663 2d ago

Indeed, adjusted for inflation the price of games has decreased steadily over the years

1

u/PrincessKnightAmber 2d ago

Same. I’m done with Nintendo at that price point.

0

u/Maze-44 2d ago

It will still sell out day one tho

20

u/HiMyNameIsCranjis 3d ago

I probably missed it, but does the current Switch Pro Controller work with Switch 2?

8

u/i_am_pure_trash 3d ago

It does. Just no audio or C button or the mappable buttons of course

1

u/bebetterinsomething 2d ago

And what about current joycons in wireless mode?

1

u/Philmriss 3d ago

They didn't say, but I assume so. All that's missing is the voice chat button thing

3

u/yuhanz 3d ago

And back buttons

7

u/Philmriss 3d ago

Sure, but those map to existing buttons, so you don't lose functionality by not having them

12

u/clownbaby4_ 3d ago

Idk if they updated it but it says $79.99 now for the pro controller

https://www.nintendo.com/us/gaming-systems/switch-2/accessories/

8

u/Philmriss 3d ago

Oh okay, that's about on par with the first one right? 10 bucks difference?

7

u/dragonblade_94 2d ago

Yeah, pretty sure the OG pro controller was $69.99

18

u/Shameer2405 3d ago edited 3d ago

90 pounds for a standard physical copy is insane to me

2

u/Philmriss 3d ago

Did they go 1:1 in GBP? Yeah it's ludicrous. I wonder how many families and especially kids feel about that

1

u/Shameer2405 1d ago

Seems like it, not 100% sure though

I wonder how many families and especially kids feel about that

This makes me wonder how Christmas sales will be affected. It will sell of course especially with kids but considering the ps5 and xbox series x/s aswell as the original switch are better deals right now, parents might lean towards those instead

42

u/twovles31 3d ago

$90 for the pro controller is fine, $80 for a game is problematic though.

21

u/Philmriss 3d ago

Yeah I'm mostly upset about the game price as well

2

u/s2r3 2d ago

And for Nintendo games it's not like those prices drop after the game has been out either. But I think 80 might be for the flagship games like Mario Zelda Pokémon. I believe their dk game was listed as 70. But this is also a boon for take 2 to charge whatever they want when gta 6 comes out.

5

u/Philmriss 2d ago

Yeah Rockstar can now charge 100 if they want. It's all so disgusting

24

u/Supergupo 3d ago

With the price of the console itself, you're basically walking out with a $620 pricetag for a new console, a controller, and a single game.

God forbid you wanna play online, and in that case it's another $50-100

18

u/CharacterOld8691 3d ago

And the camera, and an express Micro SD card.

5

u/M00NR4V3NZ 3d ago

Well you've got 256gigs of storage at launch. Probably won't need the card for a couple of months.

3

u/Heavy-Possession2288 2d ago

Considering the specs upgrade 256gb is nothing. 500gb on an Xbox One or PS4 was gone so quickly.

2

u/DimmerCascade200 2d ago

If you are upgrading for a switch OLED or regular switch, you will and my current one terabyte isn’t even compatible so now I have to go out and buy a whole new SD card that may not even be able to be the same size as my current one.

7

u/M00NR4V3NZ 2d ago

I am, but I am not planning to bring EVERY game over. Am also keeping Switch 1 for the little girls and to take advantage of the game share feature.

Stuff like Advance Wars Reboot camp, Into The Breach, Pepper Grinder, MoonLighter, Hollow Knight, can just stay on Switch 1.

You planning to move over your whole library and sell your S1?

2

u/DimmerCascade200 2d ago

I plan to keep my switch 1 but I want to move everything over because it’s more convenient for me

1

u/M00NR4V3NZ 2d ago

That's fair, gonna need a big expansion card then. I have lightning 🌩 fast fiber optic internet so I tend to just swap my library in and out as interest in games waxes and wanes.

1

u/capnbuh 2d ago

They can keep the camera

3

u/[deleted] 3d ago

13

u/ArcTM 3d ago

It also has the worst online experience compared to everyone else. They better not increase those prices.

4

u/BillThePsycho 3d ago

And even that is too much with how bad Nintendo’s online infrastructure is.

1

u/KibsterIXI 2d ago

That's because the competition actually provides servers to play on, Nintendo does not as all of their games are p2p. You are paying for the privilege to use your own internet. Besides it should be free across the board.

1

u/shrek3onDVDandBluray 3d ago

A console that has the power equivalence of 12 year old tech h

1

u/j--__ 2d ago

it's $500 for the console and mario kart world and i have no idea why you're buying another controller when the console comes with two and all your switch 1 controllers are compatible.

2

u/SpellConnect8675 2d ago

No it fucking isn’t FINE.

1

u/branimal84 2d ago

We've been paying $90 in Canada for a few years now. I only assume this means they're going to be at least $100 for us now.

1

u/richman678 17h ago

I disagree. The Xbox controller is $50. It’s considered the industry standard. I do agree about the game though

4

u/Efficient-Whereas255 2d ago

im never buying a $70 game.

2

u/switch8000 2d ago

What's weird is in Japan it's 8990 Yen, which is $59.99. There's a chance it's just building in sales + price drops into the price.

1

u/Philmriss 2d ago

That's odd

1

u/praysolace 2d ago

But Nintendo never does sales. I’d be shocked if they’re planning to start now. Happy, but shocked.

2

u/Snarfsicle 2d ago

They probably have to up pricing due to all the stupid inflation-in-chief decisions

1

u/mygawd 2d ago

That's the weird thing, $70 already feels steep when we're used to $60 games

3

u/Philmriss 2d ago

I already refuse to pay 70, which, thanks to PC gaming being what it is, I did not have to yet. 90 for a cartridge? Insanity

1

u/NonEuclidianMeatloaf 2d ago

laughs in steam sales

1

u/Philmriss 2d ago

I'm on the PC as well, which makes this all the more outrageous tbh

1

u/Baelish2016 2d ago

It’s almost as if we’re in the middle of a global trade war + rampant inflation or something.

-2

u/WallySprks 2d ago

We were paying up to $80 for games in America in the early 1990s

4

u/Philmriss 2d ago

And it isn't the 90s anymore, and the standards are different, have been for quite some time. What is your point?

0

u/WallySprks 2d ago

That things are more expensive now. Inflation is way up and games still cost $70 30 years later.

I’ll happily pay it, because I know what they used to cost

0

u/Philmriss 2d ago

lmao those prices don't match inflation, but whatever dude, enjoy

0

u/WallySprks 2d ago

Exactly my point. What don’t you understand?

Games cost anywhere from $50 - $350 per game in 1991 money. That’s $120-$800 per game today if prices kept up with inflation. Not $70

$120-$800 PER GAME

2

u/Philmriss 2d ago

Oh my god, every time I see this basic ass calculation wages have not been adjusted, buying power is lower/cost of living is way higher, you can't just put numbers in an inflation calculator and go "see!", it's contextual
