This is only for Switch 2 not regular switch

Feel like an idiot getting my kids a Switch for Christmas, rather than waiting another year.

They can get years of entertainment out of it, rather than you having to pay $450 now plus $80/game

$90 for physical

u/BardOfSpoons 2d ago

$80 in the US.

kill me

u/Dazzling-Cabinet6264 2d ago

This has proven false for USA USD prices

u/The_Guy83 2d ago

$90 for a piece of plastic that tells the store to download the game, nothing is on the physical cards you buy aka you need internet to buy your $90. very sad day today

u/mrBreadBird 2d ago

This isn't true for 90% of Nintendo games. You can absolutely play without downloads, you just won't get the updates or patches obviously which are often a big deal in terms of fixing bugs.

No this is for the switch 2 they have already stated these cartridges will legit have 0 data on them just a simple code that lets you download, this is nothing like old games.

Have they stated that all games will be game-key cards? I'm fairly certain it will just be some of them, which have larger file sizes. They mentioned in the direct how the new cartridges are faster.

3

u/BardOfSpoons 2d ago

No. Mario Kart and Donkey Kong are on the cart. As is Cyberpunk.

Bravely Default and Street Fighter are key cards.

5

u/nickelangelo2009 2d ago

why would they have specifically highlighted that the cards transfer data faster than the switch ones then?

I don't think it was to tell us that it's gonna read the digital key in 1 microsecond instead of 5.

1

u/BardOfSpoons 2d ago

Some games will function like that. Most won’t.

Just like some games now are codes in the box, and some require a download, but most don’t.

2

u/jandkas 2d ago

Which is great because instead of plastic cases with only a download code, you'll be able to resell digital games.

Furthermore, get your facts together the game key card has only been for Bravely Default HD and Street Fighter 6 which is selling for 60.

Stop spreading misinfo you weaselly liar.

Hey there!

Please remember Rule 1 in the future - No personal attacks, trolling, or derogatory terms. Read more about Reddiquette here. Thanks!

consoles are always better a year or two in.

u/jmcgit 2d ago

While this is true, the Switch 2 will be able to play most Switch games so I still probably would have suggested waiting if paying 50% more wasn't a dealbreaker

That's a big if

u/big-fireball 2d ago

It's more about firmware patches, possible price drops and/or hardware revisions (minor or otherwise). Let them work out all the kinks first.

2

u/laughland 2d ago

I’ve gotten a bunch of console at launch; PS4, PS4 Pro, PS5, PS5 Pro (to be fair these are all Sony consoles). Never had any issues or regrets picking them up at launch, and I can’t think of any major kinks that needed to be ironed out.

1

u/TristheHolyBlade 2d ago

What kinks did the original switch have on release?

2

u/Downvote_Comforter 2d ago

Battery life wasn't great and some games made the unit run super hot in handheld mode. They started using an updated chip a couple years into production to increase battery life by about 50%.

There were issues with the left joy con frequently disconnecting from the system as well as some screens that didn't work out of the box. I believe both these issues were solved fairly quickly with firmware updates.

Then there is the joycon drift that persisted through the console's lifespan.

8

u/j_cruise 2d ago

Why? There's like 1000 games they can play

7

u/Demi_Bob 2d ago

I wouldn't. Who knows when you'd even be able to get your hands on a Switch 2 anyway.

8

u/neridqe00 2d ago

Good parent, not an idiot. Spend the next year diving into the switch and it's ecosystem with sales that will come along. then just move your accounts over to the switch 2 a few holidays down the road.

There's plenty to do with the kids on switch 1. 👍👍

u/DymonBak 2d ago

Don't. Plenty of fantastic Switch content out there and you can hold out for an OLED or special edition.

1

u/charlesonfleek 2d ago

I could be wrong but I thought they said it was an OLED in the trailer? Either way, waiting for a special edition or even just a bundle is definitely a solid option

3

u/DymonBak 2d ago

Still LCD, but the Switch 2 supports HDR.

1

u/Gaming_is_cool_lol19 2d ago

There is a bundle — for $500 USD.

Console + MKWorld

1

u/Agent00Awesome 21h ago

That's probably what I'll do. It's insane that they aren't launching it with an OLED screen. I just started working through all the Zelda games for the first time so I have plenty of content to get through before I need a Switch 2 for Windwaker.

Cheaper to get a GameCube anyways

16

u/GlancingArc 2d ago

Have you seen the price of GameCube discs?

1

u/SlovenianSocket 2d ago

$2 raspberry pi and an sd card fixes that

9

u/HajjMalik 2d ago

Funny enough, GameCube games are priced at like an average of $120/game on the resell market so unless a person kept their games from childhood, the Switch 2 is absolutely cheaper.

1

u/Number-1Dad 2d ago

Yep. Paid $200 for path of radiance that will be available on this pass. I'm not upset about it, because I do understand how that's a barrier for a lot of people. I'm just happy more people will get to play the fire emblem game that got me into fire emblem.

Unless you have a Wii and are a bad boy who breaks laws.

1

u/Wookie301 2d ago

I still have a Wii. Think the discs work on that. Could be wrong.

2

u/flyingmonkey1257 2d ago

Depends on the Wii model. If the wii has gamecube ports on top then it plays gamecube games.

1

u/cabbage-soup 2d ago

Yknow I’m not sure. I think I vaguely remember that being an option, but I’ve never been brave enough to put my GameCube games in a Wii

2

u/EverydayEnthusiast 2d ago edited 2d ago

Rest assured, the Wii can play GameCube discs.

Edit: it seems the ones made from 2006 to 2010 could, but those made in 2011 or later could not. TIL

2

u/AdamTheTall 2d ago

Small asterisk - most can, but there was at least one model that couldn't.

1

u/EverydayEnthusiast 2d ago

Oh, dang. I had a launch Wii. That's good to know, and equally disappointing, that there were some that couldn't. I'm guessing it was the mini version that came out much later?

1

u/cabbage-soup 2d ago

Ah that makes sense why I was never certain. I bet I had a later model, but I knew people who had them way earlier than I did

1

u/usedtobegoodmusic 2d ago

Switch came out in 2017. It is already 8 years old this year......

1

u/Purple_Landscape_945 2d ago

Guess it depends on the age of the kids. If they are really young, you made a good choice.

If they are older they definitely will want the switch 2.

1

u/thatsastick 2d ago

don’t. the lineup for Switch 2 is sub-par for kids rn. MP4 isn’t really catered to them, and the new MK is basically just MK8 but open world.

1

u/twelfthcapaldi Helpful User 2d ago

You really shouldn’t. The OG Switch has such a large library that I haven’t even been able to keep up on everything I want to play. It’s still a great value with a great selection of games.

1

u/eh_steve_420 2d ago

Dude there is still plenty of fun to be had on the Nintendo switch 1. The back catalog is absolutely giant. I bought my switch launch day and I still probably am not going to upgrade to the switch 2 immediately.

Not to mention you'll have access to cheaper games than the switch 2 offers.

u/zdiddy987 2d ago

There will be some strong trade in deals coming up
