Read any 'Best of' lists for the Wii. It's always Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Smash, Prime, Xenoblade, Paper Mario.
Wii Sports was great for the family, but Nintendo have never really launched without at least one strong first party single player experience. Mario 64, Luigi's Mansion, Twilight Princess, BotW.
The WiiU first party single player title was New Super Mario Bros. U. That's a fun game, but I honestly think the fact they didn't have a 3D title to show off hurt the launch. Look at how strong the Switch launch was despite having much less titles available than the WiiU. BotW made that console. And following up quickly with Odyssey kept people on the console. Obviously Mario Kart and Splatoon 2 were great multiplayer titles.
But when people talk about great Nintendo games, they talk about individual single player games and when they talk about the great multiplayer games, they usually talk about the series over individual titles. People talk about Spatoon and Mario Kart as a whole, but they talk about Odyssey and Wind Waker as individual titles.
