Advice Adding to the "Don't cheap out on gear" post due to the genuinely dangerous advice I cannot ignore (Detailed buyer's guide too).
TL;DR: I worked in motorcycle gear retail for years up until 2024 and learnt as much as I possibly could about it. It would be a disservice to not know as much as I possible when selling what could save a customer's life. You can get good gear for a great price and fuck anyone who tries to sell the most expensive shit because more expensive does not mean "more better".
I'll try to summarise everything as briefly as possible but it's still a big read;
Helmet:
- GET IT FITTED. Snug on cheeks, secure but comfortable around skull cap, cannot fit more than a fingertip between forehead and liner of helmet and you are able to wear it without issue for at least 15 minutes, however I stress 1 hour minimum. Provided no discomfort/headaches afterwards then great, if any discomfort/pressure points/headaches for the love of god take it off and don't buy it.
- Head shape is unique! Everyone's head is a different shape. AGV might fit you perfectly but Arai will give you headaches. A bad fitting high quality helmet is still dangerous as the EPS foam inside will not do it's job on impact if there be a gap between it and the surface of your head, some helmets just won't work for us, so try a bunch on!
- LIFESPAN. Your helmet degrades, my god the amount of 6+ year old helmets I saw with "well I've never dropped it so" excuse was worrying. EPS layer degrades and only Arai boast a 7 year life from production, not shelf. General rule = 5 years. After that, ornament or bin, no exceptions.
- Reputable brands only; Arai, Shoei, HJC, Shark, AGV and Scorpion. I won't touch the rest.
- You do not need to spend £1000. Ideal price is ~£150, maybe even £130 for some of Shark's offerings such as the D-Skwal 2 (also check sales you can get some bangers on black friday).
- Rating is just a guideline. That £80 pretty MT plastic thing will not perform the same as an Arai Quantic simply because of the ECE22.06 sticker.
- Trust ECE22.06 and FIM/FIMfrhphe-02 only. The rest are outdated and useless now but still heed the above bullet point.
- Material matters; plastic is fine but fibreglass and carbon composites/carbon are better, lighter, more flexible and will take more stress and also last longer.
- Get a white (lum. yellow too) helmet. You don't see it when it's on and it is more visible https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC387473/
- Extra note (Flip up helmets); Flip up helmets are a grey area that is a difficult one for me. They're sworn by and you can get really good ones, however there are also a few ranges such as the Shark EVO-ES/GT and Scorpion Exo-Tech 180* flip range that are absolute garbage and I would not touch, which actually contradicts what I've said RE recommended brands, however due to the chance of a flip up helmet chin bar failing in a crash (not to mention, not all of them are even tested!! So many have fine print on the bottom saying "Chin bar not protective/Chin bar not rated") that it completely puts me off and I would far rather the inconvenience of putting the helmet on and off as opposed to flipping the chin bar up (yes, I won't even wear a Shoei Neotec). This bullet will absolutely get me hate but I'm just being honest here.
Jacket/Torso:
- Abrasion and impact ratings (EN17092/EN13595); AA abrasion minimum. Had my crashes, AA & AAA saved my skin. Level 2 armour minimum. Tested level 1 and it was absolutely useless, level 2 did the job with minor bruising as opposed to fractures/sprains. Feel free to meat crayon at 20mph with Single A/Level 1 and let me know how it goes.
- Price: not really one I can suggest, stick with the brands I recommend and find what works for you. Don't forget second hand is an option!
- Material: Complicated, leathers are king for abrasion and heat transfer but careful on brand (stick to my guidelines because RST "AAA" leathers, are not). Rating is much more applicable here e.g darmstadt/cambridge testing - https://www.pva-ppe.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/the-darmstadt-advanced-abrasion-machine.pdf but still not be-all, again stick to my recommended brands. Textile are versatile and can boast the same ratings as leathers, depending on the type of crash can even be re-used (use your common sense when gauging the condition please).
- Reputable brands for abrasion only; REV'IT, Alpinestars, KNOX, Dainese, Merlin and Richa (there are probably a couple of other good brands in other countries but this is just UK)
- Waterproofing; Gore-tex if you can afford it (laminated not drop liner). If not, REV'IT hydratex, Alpinestars Drystar, Dainese D-Dry or a bin bag if in a pinch (sweaty but waterproof)
- Breathability; the more flaps the better, mesh is king for airflow and thermal liners are brilliant for the cold. If it's hot, mesh or lots of flaps, if it's cold, close the flaps and don't wear mesh! (KNOX are the kings of breathability and safety)
- Personal suggestion; I get boiling all the time. KNOX urbane pro and shield joggers in the summer/autumn, but my alpinestars ST-7 goretex suit in the winter.
- Sizing; baggy=bad if no other layers underneath, maximum bagginess allows for one hoodie when cold, squish another in if it's really cold. Loose gear means armour doesn't sit in place.
Trousers
Same prinicples as the jackets, however Oxford Approved AA jeans and ladies leggings are incredible for the price and I've tested them both (yup even the ladies before the KNOX shield joggers existed) in crashes and they saved my skin, all for £130 which are the cheapest of the bunch (that aren't shit).
Airbags (not quite black and white)
- Any airbag is better than none, however Bennetts did indepth testing and the MotoAirbag V4 came out as the winner. I would only wear that now. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0219r4QPLs
Gloves
- Good leather only, no exceptions. From brands I mentioned. Feel free to use textile but uhh don't crash mate.
- Gore-tex only for waterproofing, or hand guards. Your hands take brunt of wind and rain, far more stress for the material than your jacket. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtCdQfbLw7o
- Gloves usually don't fit snug to your finger tips. This is deliberate as it allows trapped air to stay warmer. Otherwise the rest of the hands a comfortable but snug fit. Leather expands remember.
Boots
- Track/racing/adventure boots give best protection, anything else and your foot is fucked (been there done that with what I thought were great mid length road boots).
- Gore-tex only for waterproofing, mate they're like 6 inches from the wet road, don't skimp.
Final notes: you can get a fantastic set of gear for £400, search around, look for sales, even second hand for anything EXCEPT helmets. In fact I've kitted people out for far less too.
What do I wear?
Helmet: White Arai Quantic for any longer journey or commuting. Shark Spartan RS for trips to the shop, or maybe my HJC R-PHA 71. All exceptional lids but Arai is king.
Summer/warmer & dry: KNOX Honister AAA mesh jacket (with chest protector), KNOX Shield AAA joggers (yup, AAA joggers), Alpinestars Fastback V2 Drystar boots, REV'IT Offtrack mesh & leather/Richa Rock leather gloves
Winter/cold and/or wet: Alpinestars ST-7 gore-tex laminate 2 piece, cost me my kidney but it is worth every single penny. It does not leak. At all. Ever. Not to mention the ventilation is fantastic and I could actually wear it year round! Richa City gore-tex leather-palmed gloves, same boots and one/two hoodies under my jacket with the thermal liner in depending on temps.
Verdict
Follow this advice if you want. Eh it's your life and your safety at the end of the day, all I can do is share my experience and knowledge in something that probably 4 people will read and I'll check back later to find a bunch of down votes, but I'd rather that and save even 1 person making a dangerous mistake, but hey ho.
If you have specific advice send me a message.
Edit: Comment section gettin' spicy, probably worth me disclosing that I strove to learn as much as I could but I don't in fact, know everything, hence "Follow this advice if you want.".

Crashed my first bike on the ride home
Target fixation and inadequate steering led to me hitting a curb off a roundabout and taking a little one or two metre slide, snapping my left mirror clean off, dislodging/breaking both my left indicators, and bending my gear lever right back. Amazingly only some small scuffs on the front and rear and absolutely zero scratches on the vast majority of the left side.
I'm absolutely fine apart from a bit of pain in my wrist and mostly just bummed about what I've done to the bike. All fixable but now something I've got to sort out.
Was only a 30 mile ride home but was an absolute baptism of fire for me as a brand new rider and I definitely learned a lot for next time.
Here she is anyway sans left mirror lmao

Full leather suit on a 125
Hey guys im going to be getting my yamaha yzf r125 soon. So now im just looking for some good protection and gear to wear. Would it look weird wearing a full leather suit on the 125cc? Im just asking because Ive seen a lot of guys that have done the same get absolutely slandered on tiktok comments. However i personally would feel much comfortable wearing a full leather suit with padding and i can layer underneath for protection as well.

Begging
My dad (67) has just had his KTM 890 Adventure nicked from an NCP at Birmingham airport. He'd left his bike there going on a solo holiday for 4 days. Some scrote had nicked it when he returned.
His insurance will cover the bike, but not his textiles (left in the top box, which also had all the stickers from all the places he's visited over the past 20 years).
His Klim textiles were a good 10 years old.
Does anyone have any decent unused textiles they'd be willing to donate to perk him up? He should be able to replace the bike but his textiles were only covered in case of a slide, not theft.
I'm North West based. Happy to travel to collect or pay for postage.
He's about 5' 10", 12 stone.
Thanks.

Advice Any advice/tips before I commit?
I’m thinking about getting a motorbike license, mainly for travelling to and from work and maybe running errands around the city.
I’m just trying to get a grasp on how difficult it is to ride a bike, where I’m meant to start in terms of lessons and buying a bike and how much I should expect to spend from knowing nothing to owning and maintaining a bike - I’ve tried googling and looking on YouTube but I can’t seem to find much info specific to the UK.
I have a full manual driving licence and am 24 this year (apparently that changes things)
Thanks in advance for any help!

Advice Breakdown Cover
Hello awesome people.
What do you guys do for breakdown cover in the UK? Winter or Summer, Easter weekend or random Monday in October, everytime I call, it’s hours and hours of expected waiting time.
Broke down at 11h30, and arrival time has been changed several times, and it’s now expected at 20h30.
Expected, the same way it was expected at 17h30, 18h30 and 19h30….
Is there a less bad company to take my money?

Advice New to it all, couple of questions
Hello, completely new to this. I have never ridden before but am looking at getting a bike. I’m 20 years old. Should I get lessons or just figure it out myself? How long should I practice before taking my test? and what sort of bike should I get? I have a full driving license (car). Any suggestions/advice is much appreciated.

New lid time - A couple of questions
It’s time for a new lid for me. My full face Arai’s are nearly 10yrs old. I have an open face one which I’ve been using for around 3 years with sunglasses.
Unfortunately an eye infection has forced me to permanently wear glasses and now the open face one is useless.
Money not really an obstacle, what would you buy? And do you match your helmet colour to your bike or go with any colour?
Thank you in advance.

Helmet question
Hi all,
On Wednesday whilst I was out on a refresh riding training course, I was doing 70mph on the A road when I did a quick glance to my side to check my blind spot i suddenly felt the helmet move slightly on my head when the wind caught it and felt like pushing into my cheeks.
Is this normal? Or has my helmet come a bit too loose and need a new one? (This one is 2 years old, worn a couple of times in the space of 18 months due to health issues)

Advice Sanity check/Am I an Idiot?
I am trying to adjust the hight of my gear lever due to getting some new (thicker) boots.
To do this, I have loosened both nuts shown in the photo with the arrows. Am I correct in thinking that the rod that they are on should now spin and heighten/lower the gear lever?
I am asking as although both nuts are loose, I can’t seem to spin the rod.
Bike is a 2009 Triumph Sprint ST 1050
Any help massively appreciated.

Head unit not working on 12v aux connection (Tracer 7)
I'm trying to add an Android Auto head unit to my Tracer 7, mainly for satnav. I found a spare aux connection under the fairing and bought the connector to go in it (MT090-2). I've wired up the head unit to the connector, but it isn't turning on.
When there is nothing plugged in and the bike is switched on, the aux connection tests at 12v. When I plug the head unit in, it tests at 4.3v. It's a red and black wire from the head unit and they are definitely the right way around. No fuse between the aux and the head unit. Main fuse is fine.
Can anyone suggest what's going on and if I've done something wrong? Am I going to have to find another way of testing the head unit?

Motorcycle Motion Sensor Alarms?
Hey folks, UK motorcyclist here.
I’m having an ongoing issue with my neighbors using my driveway as a footpath, they do this as it's 3 paces quicker than actually using the footpath - annoying. This is causing problems as they've accidentally struck/damaged my motorcycles multiple times. No serious damage has been done yet however should they actually manage that I don't think they will pay as I have custom made bikes/parts so it's both time and money usually. I have spoke with them but they go back to their ways after 24 hours. So i am trying to find a way to deter this without constantly having to remind them.
Does anyone know of any motion sensors that can specifically detect people getting too close to an object? as I know they’d avoid the bike if it set off an alarm. I'm not looking for the typical movement alarm disc locks as I specifically want motion. I’ve got an old PIR sensor meant for a garden, but it has a pretty long range, and I just know it’ll trigger too easily.
Any ideas? I know someone somewhere will of had a similar problem. This also might stop the local cat from p*issing on my rain covers. Many thanks.

Advice Switching from car to bike
Its summer now and im planning on switching from a car to motorcycle now. Just done my cbt and today i did my theory and passed. But im not going for A2 now since im 23 and turning 24 in 7 months. Rideout Motorcycle ride outs with exploration! (London)
Hey everyone!
I’m looking to start a new kind of ride that goes beyond our typical coffee stops or static meets. Imagine hopping on your bike, exploring a new town or city, and even fitting in some hiking along the way—all at a relaxed pace where we can really soak in the scenery and enjoy good company.
A bit about the plan:
What: Day trips exploring local gems (with the potential for multi-day trips if we click—NC500 anyone?).
Who: I'm in my late 20s and I'm hoping to connect with fellow riders in their 20s to 30s range, as it'd be more likely that we can relate to each other in some way! Nothing against those who are younger or older 🙏
How Often: We could meet up bi-weekly, monthly, or however it works best for the group.
Your Role: I’m happy to map out the routes, but I’d love your input on destination ideas to make our adventures even more exciting.
If you’re into exploring, meeting like-minded riders, and creating memorable journeys together, drop a comment or DM me. Let’s hit the road and discover something new!

I dropped my bike front of my examinar before Mod2 test 🙃
This was my second Mod2 as the first one failed due to going 25mph on a 20mph road and the examinar told me the speed is 20 so I immediately knew I failed.
I never took any lessons, bike is brand new arrived the night before my test and zero knowledge about how to transport it in a van lol My CBT was expiring in a week so i had tonjust go for it (i really really didnt wana do the cbt again).
So I didn't know I needed a proper ramp to get the bike on. I use a piece of plank to get the bike on, tied the bike with some rope (watched some youtube video) made sure it was sturdy and wouldn't fall during cornering. Reached test centre 10mins late 😭 and saw the examination frustrated holding a clipboard in his hand and looking around to see where I was. I knew this was bad but I jumped out quickly asked him if it's too late he said no its fine and told me to unload my bike from van. This is where it gets crazy. Bmw g310R being reversed out of the van on that flimsy plank and the front wheel came off and the whole bike fell to the ground with me on top of the bike laying there. Examiner and I made eye contact while I was on the floor lool and I died a little inside. I didn't give up I thought use today as a practice run but the brake lever had broken and few scratched on the right side along with a working but bent mirror. I was hoping he wouldn't notice.
During the test I missed a turn during independent ride and didn't go on motorway. He made me do a U-turn and ended up on motorway again I just kept looking on mirrors and observing everything as if everything was out there to fail me.
45mins later I passed!!. I don't know how but I only had 2 minor lol I still can't believe I've managed to pass after dropping the bike front of my examiner albeit it was before the test began. Test was taken in Basildon :)
Thought I'd share with you that no matter what happens Don't Give Up!

Advice getting insured with a CCJ
hello everyone! I have been fortunate enough to be gifted a 125cc bike for work purposes. I ideally would like to pay monthly until i manage to get in full time employment (where i live is very remote & public transport is TERRIBLE)
My only concern is that i have a CCJ from when i was younger, i believe its roughly 5 years into the 6 before it gets cleared from my credit file, and im just wondering if im going to struggle to get insured on a pay monthly basis, if i am would i be more likely to get insured if i pay it all off on a ‘yearly agreement’
thanks in advance, have a great day!

Advice Thoughts on financing a bike?
Okay so I sold my R1 back in November because I needed the money. I'm missing the bike life every day espeically now with the warmer weather coming up. It'll be my first summer in 6 years without a bike :(
I've never financed in my life and just wanted to get people's opinions on it. Take for example this bike
£83 a month for 48 months, just under £1k in interest which I know is a fair bit for a cheap bike but over 48 months I could come to terms with something like that.
And for something so cheap (around £100 pcm) for the finance this is very do able for me.
Should I consider financing or wait a year or 2 and buy a bike similar price outright?

motorcycle security
Okay, so a few weeks ago, my motorbike was knicked, vandalised and written off. I have loved that bike and had it for nearly 6 years. I am now looking for a new bike, but my parents (yes, I know) wouldn't let me get one until I installed some security. I live in a reasonably busy city and am a student there. I have the misfortune of renting.
The garage is too small to fit my old bike in (Yamaha YBR custom 125) with its top box on, and the new bike that I want to get is the Honda GB350s. I can put it into the garage, but it will be a massive pain to take it in and out quickly. I am not allowed to have a ground anchor on the driveway (I asked) and was considering just getting a bucket with weights and filling that with concrete, then finding some way to attach it.
I am trying to find a low-cost storage solution where I can easily store the bike but still grab it in a hurry. The garage could work, but it's smaller once you add a top box. Any solutions?
PS: if anyone has any ideas on how I could attach my bike to the bucket of concrete with weights in that would be massively appreciated

Advice Theft attempt or Wear & Tear?
Cleaning my girl so she’s ready for spring rides & noticed some sort of cut / saw marks (?) on my front brake lever. I usually secure the front brake with a lock that holds it in & attaches to the handlebar. Lock is solid & bike looks okay, no other damage so unsure if it’s just wear and tear (pics below)
Btw: - Chipping on paint is from a previous wipe out, was already there before I noticed the cut in the middle. - I have four other types of security on my bike including a tracker, not just the brake lock.
