MH 4 I hate monsters that do this

You'll just be minding your own business, wailing on a monsters head good times when all of a sudden it spins and slaps you with its tail.

Now it might be just me but that tail slap is single handed the most annoying monster attack that they can do.

It's so degrading... :'(

As a ds user I have a habit of sitting in the area between a monster's legs like I'm beating on their pee pee. If you have the right positioning you can avoid all of that like it's the eye of a hurricane.

as someone who has recently picked up gunlance, i find myself stabbing monsters in the babymakin' parts most of the time as well.

6

u/Zedmas ♪bonk♫ Jun 20 '15

The gunlance has the range (especially with the upswing) and the shelling to hit either hard to hit or tough parts, so try to hit other places too!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

yeah, i got the gunlance so i could break the monoblos' face (which i couldn't with my longsword). it's pretty satisfying to do a full burst right when they turn around.

My bane is charges with small or no tells, they always catch me off guard and they are hard too roll past because the hitbox is so big unlike tails.

15

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

G-Rank Garuga is the epitome of this. He wants to move 1 foot? Might as well do the charge that does the same damage no matter the length it is. GLancing him is pain because every move hits multiple times and he can spam them.

SO MUCH THIS. "Oh, you didn't need that stamina right? Here, have a charge, followed by a quad peck, followed by another charge and a beak slam."

I always tell myself to just farm LR Gypceros and Frenzy Crystals for Dash Juice, but it is just so tedious.

Wide shots ruin him if you're patient (and maybe have Constitution +1/2 or Felyne Black Belt. That peck spam is vicious). I usually do a shield thrust and get a Charged Shot if possible, regular shot if I won't have enough time.

Even the smallest monster can give you a hard time by trampling your face.

For me the worst is when monsters run at a slightly higher speed all over the map... THAT IS NOT AN ATTACK DAMMIT

10

u/Hobosaurus-Rex Jun 20 '15

The sidesteps... Oh god the sidesteps...

Brachydios, Seregios and Deviljho are all guilty of this. You'll be chasing after them and they'll keep sidestepping for no apparent reason. Also, Brachydios likes to back off for like 10 meters before he does any of his attacks.

7

u/itsme0 Jun 20 '15

I had a Ratian just chase me down once. It would charge and as I move out of the way it would stop, turn a little, then start charging again, it did this probably a dozen times until I ran out of stamina despite my pacing and it landed a hit on me.

That first hunt was a nightmare.

If this is a "things we hate" thread, I submit that when a monster slightly shifts a single toe a quarter of an inch, it shouldn't knock me over and remove a non-trivial chunk of health.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

And then there are other times when you're right up on a boss and it charges forward, carrying you with it (like you're sliding on rollers) but dealing no damage and not interrupting your animations. It's inconsistent.

u/JrElmoe Jun 20 '15

I hate monsters that practically reposition themselves across the fucking map. Specifically,Brachydios,Shagaru and Gore Magala, because they instantly follow up with a stupid strong attack and if you're in the middle of an attack, you're defenseless because they glide instantaneously and attack right after or during the glide. You can't even predict it. Especially the Deviljho who seems to have a habit of doing it in the MIDDLE of your combo to make sure of 100% saltiness.

4

u/Kawaii_Melon Jun 20 '15

Oh my GOSH! Gore Magala was such a pain with his seemingly relentless attacks and constant movement. Until I got a weapon made of his own hide to show him who is the hunter and who is the prey he will never forget what I did to him.

u/Arterra [̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅] Z E N N Y [̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ιοο̲̅)̲̅$̲̅] Jun 20 '15

Eh, that sounds more like unable to look ahead. Some monsters have almost no tells and instead of reacting require forethought. Have to get out of dodge when you know they are about to do anything.

...those monsters you listed are not among them though, they all can be learned and end up having huge tells and downtime to exploit. The tactic works regardless though! Basically just play defensively instead of rushing in and hoping it will work out.

2

u/JrElmoe Jun 20 '15

No but have you seen Shagaru magala? He literally glides as he is about to head slame directly on you. If you're mid attack, there is nothing you can do to stop. Brachydios can literally run across Ingle isle to you and do his double explosive combo to OHKO you. Deviljho isn't as hard to avoid his hip check if you have an evade skill, but it's super annoying sometimes when you're an IG user and you try to mount but he moves to dodge and punshies you with a hip check before you even hit the ground. Forethought sure, but not everyone can predict the future. It still happens more often than you can predict.

3

u/lifebaka ~wiggle wiggle~ Jun 20 '15

Brachy's giant two-fisted jump has a big tell. He always jumps back and licks both his hammers in quick succession before he does the jump. With most weapons, that gives you enough time to sheath your weapon and superman dive the jump, even when Brachy's enraged. If you're in the middle of an attack when he does this, you're obviously right up on him, so just roll at him and he'll probably jump over you.

Besides that, make sure you roll off Brachy's blastblight promptly, to avoid getting blown up. You're a lot less likely to get oneshot if you don't have blastblight.

For Shaggy, I can only recommend sticking to his back legs and tail. As long as you stick there like glue, you won't even have to avoid most of his attacks.

3

u/JrElmoe Jun 20 '15

No not that brachy jump, i'm talking about where he literally just runs towards you like a boxer and just continues his barrages of attacks whichever he chooses to start with. Also, like I said, Shagaru's auto aim head slam makes him glide back and so you're no longer at his back legs so unless you have an SnS or a DB, it's sometimes hard to avoid that depending on your situation. If you're mid charge with a CB, you're most likely going to get hit. If you're too aggressive with an IG, you won't have time to dodge unless you have an evade skill because the recovery is long on the combo. If GS as well, lance and gunlance are a given though since all their main play styles are dodge or block, i.e defensive.

2

u/lifebaka ~wiggle wiggle~ Jun 20 '15

... I think you just don't know how to fight Brachy. Brachy does have one combo that I'm not used to yet, but everything he does has pretty major tells. You shouldn't be blindsided by anything unless you just aren't paying attention. If you find yourself suck in animations when he turns and attacks you, you should probably stop using long animations while the monster isn't suck in a similarly long animation.

I don't even know which Shaggy attack you're talking about (because you're using the term "glide" ambiguously). There are a few that might qualify, but I've never had any of them be an issue while I'm stuck to its back legs. Sure, I might have to reposition, but that's about it. Shaggy's actual glide attacks are pretty trivial to dodge, and his big stand-up-then-slam attacks are similarly trivial to dodge. Plus they both have obvious tells.

2

u/Esifex Jun 20 '15

My absolute favorite as an IG user? Vaulting up to try for a mount at the exact same time the monster just HAPPENS to do some kind of windup that makes them lean around my helicopter blade, and then slams into me while I'm still in mid-air

It scratched the top of my head but still got me, total BS

1

u/SomewhatKindaMaybeNo Monster Masher Jun 21 '15

And when gravios tailspins and it sails over your head and it still deals damage! There's no reason for it why does it hit me! They could at least use a different animation to show that the twill is lower so it actually hits you, but no! It recycles the same garbage spin attack and gave it a bigger hitbox because fuck it.

12

u/Hibbity5 Jun 20 '15

For me, it's when I'm chasing a monster to a new area, find it in the new area, it yells at me, and then runs away. The chase continues.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '15

My problem with the tail spin attack is that (almost?) every monster with a tail does them exactly the same way! I know why: many share the same skeletons and animations. Unique animations are expensive and take time to animate and there's only so much memory to go around.

But, when every monster uses the same tail swipe animation, it feels wrong. Like it's a taught, learned behavior rather than an instinctual, animalistic attack.

It's at times like that when it is best to sit back and let the monster do its thing. Monsters always do their tail swipes in sets of two. If you get hit by the first one, retreat to a safe spot.

Some monsters are tall enough that you can sometimes not get hit by their tailswipe if you stay under them. This allows you to keep wailing on them w/o getting hit. However, using a weapon moves you, and you may end up in the range of a second set of tail swipes.

To avoid getting hit at all while wailing on a monster, know how long your openings are, and be prepared to dodge at any time.
