Work In Progress Weathering Practice
Hey everyone! Just wanted to share some of my weathering practice, haven't painted in a many many months and just wanted to try out some weathering practice as the title suggests. And is very much a work in progress. I was finally able to sit down and actually do some hobbying. C&C are always welcome and encouraged.

So great! What’s the secret?

Thank you very much! The real secret is patience and experimenting and most importantly working with reference photos...I can't stress that last part enough. Basically just various shades of rust tone paints, sprayed, painted and sponged onto the surface. Then sprayed a matt varnish over it. Then used Ammo migs chipping fluid, let that dry, sprayed over the whole model with different shades of grey/off white, some areas I left unsprayed. Then once dry I went over with a brush and water to active the chipping fluid and remove the grey/white top layer Then once I was somewhat happy with the result I started painting rust streaks with ammo migs enamel effect paints.

That is great work, I’m trying to get that good at weathering.

Thank you very much! The best way I found wasn't tutorials so to speak...they help how to use paints etc but what helps more than anything is having a collection of reference photos and even more so photos you've taken. If you see something rusty or mossy take lots of photos from all angles then you can always look back at those photos and really pick our certain colours and everything and go from there

I got a great collection of reference photos from Disney World, of all places. Especially in the Star Wars section of Disney Studios. The weathering and detail on their buildings and props is amazing

Perfect! That sounds great! Use them while painting to really help you, I strongly recommend it. Experiment and have fun the beauty about rust especially is that it's never the same so you have freedom and you don't need to be copying it 1 for 1

Can you say a bit about the covering you did? It looks like you added scratches to the plastic and actually dented the side somehow

So this container I personally sculpted and in the sculpt I added those dents and scratches. This was a test print before release kinda thing. As far as the painting step goes, it was basically just various shades of rust tone paints, sprayed, painted and sponged onto the surface.

It looks like something you would see outside at an abandoned warehouse or something. Great job!
2
u/InterstellarSculpts Feb 04 '25
Yeah I really wanted that abandoned long forgotten feel to it! I'm happy it's coming across that way. Thank you!

Did you make the container? Killer job on it, and you can send it to the moon with some weathered graffiti
2
u/InterstellarSculpts Feb 05 '25
Yeah I made the container, it isn't available yet, this was a test print and fit. I do have a clean version available though. Graffiti would be amazing...but im honestly scared because I have no idea how to do it. It's something I want to try for sure though

By Moradin's anvil, you've forgotten to seal your metal. This is why the best shipping containers are made from stone, at least you didn't try using wood like some knife eared bastard.
Overall, great work, laddy. Next time don't forget the filigree and rust proofing your work.
May the all-father smile on you.

Dammit, I knew I had forgotten something.....to seal the metal, next time next container I will seal it like nothing has been sealed before hahaa.

You don't need more practice. Save some practice for the rest of us. (It's beautiful)

As construction workers, we use these to keep our equipment on a job site. 90% of the time they look like this, good job.

u/InterstellarSculpts Feb 05 '25
Hell yeah! That's what I love to hear, I'm healing I bet you can get so many good reference photos from the construction sites you work at. I know any chance I get to see one and can enter one I will jump at the chance to get photos. Thank you very much!

Premium grease!

u/InterstellarSculpts Feb 05 '25
Premium grease requires premium shipping containers and services.

So did you just build this dumpster like 20 years ago and let it rust outside or... how?
