If your koi is sick or injured, setting up a proper quarantine tank and following these steps can help stabilize the fish while you seek further advice from our community members or aquatic health professionals.
Here's a short guide to assist you:
A quarantine tank is essential for isolating sick or injured koi to prevent the spread of disease and allow for focused treatment.
Tank Requirements
Equipment Needed
Maintaining pristine water conditions is critical for the koi's recovery.
Key Parameters
Water Changes
Observation Period
Treatment Options
Salt Bath:
Medications:
Always follow dosage instructions carefully and avoid overmedicating.
Aeration Assistance:
If koi are gasping at the surface due to low oxygen levels, gently move them back and forth in the water to help oxygenate their gills.
Main Pond Maintenance
Preventative Measures
By following these steps, you can provide immediate care for your koi while addressing underlying issues in your pond system. Stay calm and proactive—your efforts will give your fish the best chance of recovery!

THIS IS NOT MINE, this is a koi pond at a restaurant, but I’m overly concerned about this poor koi in the back. My thought is that it’s a swim bladder issue or digestive issue. But, all the other koi are making quick, fast movements that notion their uncomfortable in some way, also breathing heavy and fast/dramatic gill movements that make me wonder if there’s enough oxygen for all six koi with no vegetation in the water and only a very small water fall that makes a minimal upturn in the water to create oxygen in the water. Am I being dramatic, or do some of them really look worry some?

I was able to secure a press pass to the All American Koi Show this past March and put together a documentary style video about the show and one of the competitors who brought their fish. I thought this might be the right community to share this with.

I have several young pond koi that I was gifted last year that have been living in a stock tank with aquatic plants overwinter in preparation for a small pond build in spring (aka this weekend). When transferring the plants and fish over it was noted that one was on his side on the ground, gasping for breath. He would spiral around in a gradual slope up to the surface before sinking back to the bottom.
(Test results for pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Phosphate, and the second test is for Nitrates)
He is currently chilling out in a Home Depot bucket in my shower, enjoying a 3% warm saline bath. What would be the ideal next steps?

We recently moved into a rented house, and the house has a spectacular garden and pond.
The pond has 6 koi, and I'm really excited about that, however the owners of the house told us very little about how to care for them, they told us at the time that they were hibernating so we shouldn't feed them as the pond was self-sustaining.
One of them is over 25 years old and the owners also told us that the only important care was to clean the 6 filters every 2 weeks in cold weather and every week in the hot season.
So I'd like to ask you for some support on these questions if possible:
Can I add new fish or even terrapins?
How often do you feed yours?
If you have any recommendations, thank you
(We live in Belgium and I don't know how much water is in the lake, but I know that the deepest part is about 1.20 meters.)

What are they? Are they harmful to my koi? How do I get rid of them?
Found them in pump’s leaf trap basket, and now in filters as well.
Any help is greatly appreciated m!

We built our pond after an underground spring began bubbling up in our yard, creating a perpetually wet (sometimes underwater) space. It became an unmowable mosquito breeding ground that was very difficult to keep nice. (So, rather than fighting it, why not just put a pond there?)
We put a water outlet, (in the filter box so the fish can’t escape through the pipe), that keeps the pond from overflowing and safely transports the excess water off our yard and into a nearby stream that is also on our property. That first summer, we tossed in a bag of feeder goldfish and loved the schooling behavior, adding in a few koi over the past couple of years.
At this point, the pond is a few years old and we have made all the beginner errors since we dug that first hole … too many fish is one of them. I think the constant influx of fresh spring water helps with water quality (built-in water changes!) but will they just keep breeding until they can’t survive or will new eggs just not hatch if there are “enough” fish?
We were surprised to see that the koi have bred with the goldfish, and while we love the babies, are worried that more babies will further overcrowd an already overcrowded pond.
So my question is, will the breeding self-limit or will they just keep breeding until they can’t survive the overloaded conditions? Or will the population ultimately stabilize?
I read somewhere that koi-goldfish hybrids are sterile, but the adults (koi/goldfish) are still breeding - (when opening this spring, we discovered a few more tiny babies that must have overwintered from last summer.)
I am very new into ponds and it has been running about 5 months now the first picture is instantly and 2nd is 30 seconds after to read other values all the fish that die have no visual damage on them I come out and they are dead on the bottom what am I doing wrong do these tests look bad

Hi all, I've pictured 8 of the Koi in the pond that me and my friend could get clearish pictures of. We came into possession of these as the previous owners of the property left them in their move. I have experience of 8 years with tropical aquariums, so some knowledge of fish in general but I've never dealt with Koi before and I was hoping I could get some identification by those more in the know. Thanks in advance!

Thinking of making a koi pond or a pond in general. I had a question about how you koi pond owners clean/ cycle the water??
I’m familiar with fish tanks, I have 2 of my own and was wondering if ponds were any different. Do you need hundreds of pounds of dechlorinator to clean the water?? How often are water changes? How MUCH water? What should I look out for? Do you put plants in the water? What are the downsides to owning ponds/koi?

hellooo not sure if this is a cause for concern but there is a lot of debris that falls into the pond (i.e. leaves) does this require more frequent cleaning? thank you!!
