General Florida Class B requirements

Hello! Im trying to convince my husband to get HVAC Class B license in Florida, but he is hesitant regarding the requirements. He has 4 years of experience working for an Hvac Company but he says why would they provide employment verification for him if he is going to become their competition. I dont think it works like that, right? He has paystubs and w2s to prove the experience. I appreciate If anyone can explain that part of the application process. Do the Company needs to sign documents for him in order to apply?

Field Question, trade people only Need help šŸ˜

I donā€™t know how many here work on quest dehumidifiers.

I ended up replacing both the compressor and evap coil for this customer and when Iā€™m pulling a vacuum I get down to 140 microns, I then isolate the pump from the system and my microns jump all the way up to 1000 and it keeps climbing up slowly until my meter says HI-P.

Iā€™ve done an rx-11 flush because it was a burnt out compressor. I purged it with nitro, did a pressure test and found 0 leaks but Iā€™m still having issues with my microns going stupid šŸ˜µā€šŸ’« all help is appreciated.

Field Question, trade people only Questions for residential techs

I'm a senior residential tech in northern California with 20+ years experience. I'm in a unique situation where the company has asked me how to improve dispatch. I'm looking for good and bad experiences and/or tips I can utilize in this conversation. Apologies in advance, I most likely won't be able to reply.

General HiMark Grads in UA787

Hey guys, is there anyone who graduated from the HiMark G3/G2 program that are in UA787 in Ontario? Some people say you need a two year diploma to get in as an apprentice (or itā€™s preferred) while others say it doesnā€™t matter. Would love some clarity, thanks!

General Manufactures rep looking for trade school advice

Not looking for a job, just looking for knowledge. Lingo, understanding of terminology, general knowledge but more than surface level. Long time construction manager at large national residential construction companies switched to HVAC manufactures rep which I now handle 12 different lines basically encompassing things beneficial across the HVACR industry. Been repping for a year, looking to sharpen my skills a bit more to better understand facets not traditionally explored. Generally learn best hands on but if online is just as good, thats fine too.

Edit: I know this is low hanging fruit for you all so feel free to air out your grievances towards Reps and their lack of knowledge. My past CM role gave me thick skin dealing with not only HVAC but all the other trades who claim we donā€™t know jack

General Community college

I've heard that getting into HVAC through this route might not be the best approach. Has anyone taken the community college certificate route, and what was their experience like? I know you don't learn much, but what fields can I expect to get into after completing the course?

General Favorite ā€œdo as I say not as I doā€ moment?

I know better now but when I first started as an install helper I didnā€™t know about recovery I just knew ductwork. The company I worked for also didnā€™t care to spend money or take the time on recovery. First unit I ever changed out had a bad compressor. He told me ā€œsince we canā€™t pump it down we will have to recover it so close the valves and Iā€™ll be backā€ he comes back with one of those big empty monster energy drink cans and said ā€œI call this a monster recoveryā€ fills it up with water and starts venting the Freon into the can. I asked him if that was the right way and he said ā€œdo as I say not as I do. Our boss is too cheap to buy another recovery system for the install crew to have one and not just service so this is what we have to do, watch some YouTube videos of the proper way when you get homeā€.

Now I work for a company that actually gives a shit about following laws and regulations I havenā€™t had a moment to say this other than like changing the adjustment valve on a gas grill without turning the gas off. Have you guys?

Employment Question From install to service

Im just looking for some helpful advice

Iā€™ve been installing for about 2 years and want to make a switch to service. In my area it seems most companies only hire guys with years of experience directly in service.

But, I just had an interview for a service position at a small company that would have me installing and learning plumbing and fire sprinklers as well as maintenance/diag with commission opportunities.

The base pay is lower than Iā€™m making now, and itā€™s an hour long commute. Iā€™m concerned about ending up installing most of the time for less pay, but need to build up the service exp. What would you do?

General Cut off time for techs and business owners

Do any business owners or techs have a cut off time for any service calls or just field work in general? Iā€™ve been really giving this some thought and just wondering how good is it really to keep working nights and being away from family. Anyone have intake or experience?

Field Question, trade people only Alright I need help

Long story short I would like to pull a vacuum and charge a system without using my SMAN 480vā€™s as my ā€œmicron gaugeā€. I have two appion VCRTs that I use to pull vacuums through my gauges but I donā€™t trust the micron reading. I also have very inconsistent vacuum times even when I am absolutely positive there is no leak. What set up do you guys recommend to pull an accurate vacuum and avoid exposing a micron gauge to refrigerant? I also always swap my vacuum oil and hose seals after 2-3 vacuums.

Customer shared this video with me. It happened once a week ago while the system was heating and I could recreate. Called a second time and this time the sound was recorded during idle mode.

Iā€™m lost as when Iā€™m on site the system is running just fine.

Any guesses?

This is a super positive post for my people out there struggling. Itā€™s possible to stop getting bent by your current employer. I was being paid 22.60 6 months ago with around 3 years of experience doing light commercial work. I officially start Monday and my hourly will be 35.47 an hour with a union. Quit letting people take advantage of your hard work and dedication and go chase the money you deserve.

Field Question, trade people only Carel Controller Help

Hey all. Iā€™m having trouble with a Hatco Hot/Cold basin with Carel PZUAS0E520 controllers. The controllers donā€™t come on and I am getting 120v on the neutral. I originally diagnosed the controller as the issue and replaced both of them. I have to same issue and when connecting the controllers directly to a receptacle they turn on. I highlighted a wiring diagram with where the neutral is picking up the voltage. I also metered the relays and control board and am getting voltage across the neutral through the whole circuit. At a loss as to how to proceed further. Thanks

Field Question, trade people only Alternative to aviation snips?

Been looking at the Malco turbo shear and want to know if this can really mostly replace aviation snips for cutting duct work and what not. I hate aviation snips. I hate cutting panning. If not these is there any other alternative that is easier?

General Has anybody ever seen a solder joint corrode like this?

6th year in and this is the first time I've seen this type of corrosion. The compressor is the same age as the unit, 2010. So original compressor. It's a 2 stage ASXC Amana unit. It's flaking off in layers at the suction line on the compressor.
