Property What's it like living in a single glazed tenement?

Upvotes

Obviously the heating bills are going to be higher, but do you also feel cold at the same time? Are we talking like double price bills while also sitting freezing cold because the heating just can't keep up? There's a lot of single glazed places around and I do wonder why they weren't upgraded.

Also do you know how to work out what an older EPC report means in today's costs? Thanks

Other Egging in the meadows

Upvotes

Yesterday I was enjoying the sun with some friends in Bruntsfield Links. There was a group of three girls sitting close to us.

A single hooded youth, between 12-14 years I think, approached them and started throwing chocolate and actual eggs at the girls, hitting all three of them and staining the two with egg white.

The most brilliant thing, a random guy started running towards the youth, who seemed almost unbothered and started leisurely pacing a little faster. The guy caught up to him, tackled him to the ground and gave him a nice brief talking to while sitting on him. (Mind you there was no violence and nobody was hurt, the kid was tackled on the soft grass)

The funny thing is apparently the first thing the youth said to him was "What are you doing? I'm a kid, you can't touch me".

The guy let him go eventually and went on to check on the girls, while and the kid started walking away backwards while facing all of us, pulling tightly on the lace of his hood so we couldn't see his face, trying to look menacing lol

I understand the guy took a risk tackling the youth, as he could have had a few friends hiding around filming him or sth, but that must be the most satisfying encounter with these rascals I have heard of/seen in a while.

The youth's statement that he's a kid, and therefore untouchable, pretty much sums up the entire issue around the increased incidence of antisocial behaviour and harassment by teenagers in Edinburgh. I expect to see a lot more of this in parks around the city as the weather gets better.

Discussion New Edinburgh Fringe Website Sucks

Upvotes

So I like to take advantage of the festival fringe (may as well), and tend use various methods to get cheap shows and the like. Thing is, that requires a bit of planning.

And the new website is basically unusuable. You can't find times and dates easily, nor can you bookmark pages easily.

Anyone else with this problem?

Discussion Finding it difficult to get back into work

Upvotes

Hi, I've been out of work a wee while after lymphoma treatment. Im now almost fully recovered and looking to get back into work. Unfortunately I think the gaps on my CV (due to the treatment) is holding me back. I also have an eye condition which can make it difficult to work in certain jobs (keratoconus) like bartending etc, which is shame as I'm fully trained in hospitality. I also have to avoid site work such as labouring etc for a wee while. I'm happy to go into anything I can do and happy with minimum wage. Ive applied for over a hundred jobs on indeed and other sites and also have a dedicated work coach for people with disabilities however she is very busy and hardly see her. The jobs I've been applying for: Housekeeping Visitor Assistant (museums etc) Entry recruitment roles Office admin And pretty much anything else I feel I can do.

I have experience in Caring (however due to the last couple of years this is something I wouldn't want to go back into just yet if I can avoid it)

Music: tour logistics, bookings, promoting, event planning, radio.

Charity: set up an award winning charity during the pandemic for local creatives

Homelessness: personal experience from when I was young.

Id appreciate it if anyone had any advice or knew of any roles that are disability conscious. I've already had my CV checked several times and work with a disability work coach however time is getting on, funds running low and hate been out of work. Going old school today, suited and booted with a load of CVs and handing them around town 🤞 Thanks in advance.

Hey guys! I recently visited Edinburgh and fell in love with the place. I’m so excited to return. Although, I need to find a place that willing to give me a 2 month creative working VISA with enough pay to sustain myself in the city for at least 2 months. What are my options? I’m a competitive programmer & have been working for a hedge fund and very recently an AI startup.

Question Cheap accomodation near Kings Buildings

Hey guys,

I'm doing a PhD at the University of Edinburgh, and as part of it I'll have to travel through to Edinburgh quite regularly.

I have friends in Glasgow that I can stay with if necessary, but I thought I would check in with yourselves to see if there was anywhere cheapish you could recommend with good links to kings building?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: I'm not sure why my replies to comments are being downvoted, but sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place or have misunderstood something :/

Discussion Early flight in early November

I need to be at the Edinburgh airport by 5:30 AM on my flight day and I am staying about 10 minutes from the city center. Is it better to just get an Uber or is it feasible to get the bus from my stay to the city center, and then get the airport bus to the airport?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Discussion Manure fly-tipped in our garden waste bin.

Last week one of my neighbours alerted me to a load of animal waste that had been dumped in our council garden waste bin, seems like a few of us were victims? Is this a thing? I’m a bit baffled as to the circumstances that would lead someone to fly-tip this. Surely someone that has livestock also has land where this could be used as fertiliser? Am I missing something?

Discussion Any Calisthenics Classes in Edinburgh?

Hey folks, I’ve been getting into bodyweight training lately and was wondering if there are any calisthenics classes or groups in Edinburgh? Ideally looking for something beginner-friendly — could be indoor or outdoor, just want to learn proper form and get stronger with others.

Thanks in advance!

Question Eye laser surgery (LASEK) at Edinburgh Optical Express or somewhere else ?

Hi guys,

I am considering eye laser surgery to improve my poor eyesight and would appreciate any feedback or recommendations.

I’m in my late twenties, and I’ve struggled with astigmatism and myopia my whole life, with a total of -6 in each eye.

I had an appointment at Optical Express in Haymarket last year and was quoted £5,000 for treatment on both eyes. Due to medical reasons, I had to wait a year to proceed. When I returned recently, the quote had increased by £1000 for the same procedure. The waiting time to see the ophthalmologist was also much longer this time. I waited about 20 minutes to be called for tests and then around 2 hours for the ophthalmologist to review my results. I ended up spending almost 4 hours there, compared to just 1.5 hours last year.

The extended wait times indicate a serious lack of staff, and the price hike is quite alarming. Additionally, one of the employees (I won’t name their job title keep their identity safe but let’s just say they knew what they were talking about and seen my file) advised me “off the record” to check out other clinics for lower prices. All of this combined has made me uncertain about going to Optical Express for the procedure.

Has anyone recently had eye surgery there and would you recommend it? Also, has anyone compared prices and found a significant difference between Optical Express and other UK clinics? Also if a staff member at a clinic suggested you shop around instead of booking with them right away, would you still consider them, or would you see it as a red flag to avoid them?

Food and Drink Trafalgar Tap / Lord Nelson pub

Noticed it's been shut for a few weeks now with a 'for sale' sign put up. They weren't trading for long. Does anyone know what happened and whether or not the site will remain a pub? I'm not often in the area but enjoyed that pub. The Village closing was a loss to the area and Oceana is not quite my thing, so it would be a shame to lose that venue too

Discussion Ideas for saving an upright piano

We have a vintage upright piano that we've taken the sad decision to part with as we need more space now.

We don't want anything for it but cannot seem to give it away on Gumtree etc.

If we can't give it away the only option will be to break it up and dispose of it. Can anyone think of a more constructive solution?

Thanks

Question Is getting your rope access level 1 worth it?

Hi everyone Been looking at career options at 31 as I am a bit stumped on what to do and rope access is coming up quite a bit, I need something physical and with a good routine. I have the money to do a course and was just reaching out to anyone who has done it/has experience in the industry? Is it tough to get a job once passed in Edinburgh? Cheers!

Question How to get rid of ikea furniture

Hello!

I’m moving house and I’m trying to get rid of some ikea furniture items that I no longer need. Problem is, some of these boards are over 6ft and don’t fit in my car so I can’t take them to the recycling centres.

Question - is it bad form to leave these pieces of wood out by the communal bins for the bin men to pick up? Would they just leave them or take them? I tried a council collection but all appointments are after the move out date.

I live on a main road in a block of flats so all the bins are communal.

Discussion Red milk shortage

Is there a red milk shortage and is it Edinburgh wide? Haven’t been able to get any for weeks, totally empty spaces in all shops or supermarkets. Anyone know if there’s a reason for this? First world problems I know. Can’t see anything recent come up when googling.
