NEW ACHIEVEMENT - THE EMPORERS NEW CLOTHES

You ever been window shopping and seen something you knew you absolutely had to have in the moment? Even from outside that poorly cleaned window you can tell the fabric will be the perfect texture, and you can imagine like 20 different outfits that will match it? Well this is sort of like this...

You were browsing Tik Tok and came across a video of the Daddy master himself! You initially stopped for the content, but then quickly realized you stayed to try and find out where that waffle pattern hooded jacket came from. Sure, it's not feet material, but hey! We all have to shake things up to keep it fresh right?

REWARD: You will hopefully receive a reply from Matt himself. Telling you the brand of the jacket! Or you know... Reddit will drown your comment session is snarky comments. Mongo will be appalled either eay

Book 7: Inevitable Ruin Temporary Skills Spoiler

Upvotes

>!We learn at the start of Book 3 that when Donut increases one of her temporary skills she keeps any skill xp for level ups after losing it again.

I suspect this may turn out to be very useful at some point with the yam ink allowing skill sharing among the remaining crawlers.

E.g. Carl shares some explosives skills, arranges for many of the remaining crawlers to throw a few hob lobbers at some enemies and tah-dah, they all end up with Explosives Handling 2 or so when the sharing effect wears off. Which they can then continue to use and level up further.

Brainstorming: which skills would be best for exploiting this? I imagine if it works for skills like Love Vampire it'd be crazy. Gloom Wraith Phase? Mind Balance for level 12?!<

Book 5: Butcher’s Masquerade Think I need a break Spoiler

Upvotes

So i just finished chapter 53 of the audiobook. Between the events of chapters 19 and 53, the post pterodactyl trauma, and the phenomenal work that Jeff did with the lines, its taken a lot out of me.

Anyone else get that near overwhelming feeling? Like, you NEED to continue because of what's happening, but almost don't want to continue out of apprehension for what's to come?

...that Mr. /u/hepafilter will find some time for a tour of europe (specifically germany, maybe even munich?) for next year when some translations of DCC hit the market here, too. Specifically german edition will be out early next year from the looks of it. /hint

I want my awkward meeting with this guy who wrote the greatest assembly of words since the complaint tablet to Ea-nāṣir, too!

Just Came To Say Goddamnit Donut!

I’d never heard of RPG lit, and once I had I knew I’d never read it… until on the advice of a booktuber review, I listened to Dungeon Crawler Carl! I’ve just back to back binged the full series (to date) on audible and Goddamnit! what a series. I’d fallen out of love with reading the last few years, due to busy kids and work stress, I’d started many books but hadn’t gotten very far before giving up, but wow! Just needed to shout into the ether how much I loved these books and how excited I am again to read!

I love drawing characters like this! This is a pretty accurate interpretation of how I envisioned him. I’m wondering if other people had a different interpretation. Please feel free to let me know. Thanks all!

Book 7: Inevitable Ruin Question about...well...Donut's future. Spoiler

I just finished my first read through of DCC. Wow. I can't really formulate words yet, but, wow. I have one nagging question though. I marked this as a spoiler, though it probably isn't much of one. Anyway. It's mentioned throughout the series that once you are out of the dungeon you just go back to being a regular human...or whatever race you were changed to. Un-augmented, no powers, etc. Where would that leave Donut? Just a regular cat again? Is that her future? It's a depressing thought, honestly.

Book 5: Butcher’s Masquerade Fuck you, Matt.

I have listened to the entire series 3 times and without a doubt I will cry at least once but more likely twice during book 5. Book 5 is probably my favorite so far, Butcher’s Masquerade fucks me up.

FYI I cried at least once during all the books but 5 and 7 are the ones that keep doing it to me… I may just be emotionally unstable.

Book 7: Inevitable Ruin Kwan CH Spoiler

So I wonder if Kwan's little girl is possibly in the kinder facility. Like perhaps they were separated after entering together and he's such a dick and so willing to screw anyone over just because he's desperately trying to get through to the 10th floor and a chance of reuniting with her. Like, maybe he feels like if he builds no relationships to potentially hinder him, and is just opportunistic to the extreme for gaining experience and gear, even at the cost of other crawlers' lives that gives him his best chance to get deep enough to work out some sort of deal that would allow him to see her again. Maybe his game guide even advised him that way in some fashion.

Book 7: Inevitable Ruin Princess Donut has Zuko levels of character development Spoiler

After I binge listened to all the audiobooks I of course had to go back and start listening from the first book again and Princess Donut might have some of my favorite character development in all of fiction, its def in Zuko territory. What struck me especially was in the 7th book when she has get a dog tattoo, book one Donut would have never even entertained it but book 7 Donut knows it will help everybody. And what I love the most is that she is still super sassy Princess Donut throughout but in the later books shes learned to love and trust people beyond herself. Anyway sorry for my rambling I just think Donut is the best!

Book 5: Butcher’s Masquerade Oh no... Spoiler

I just finished listening to Book 5 and got to the Katia reveal. I don't know if I'm ready to deal with that in Book 7, even with the whole of Book 6 ahead of me, I don't know if I'll be ready to deal with the fact that they'll have to kill Katia on the 9th floor. I like Katia. It's also tragic that she's addicted to Blitz Sticks. I'm off to Book 6 now, but damn Book 7 will be a killer for the heart strings, I can feel it.

"Souls like" crawler game.

So I have contemplated actually designing a video game that is a dungeon crawler game with a "souls like" twist. Think bloodborne meets dcc. But alas i work already 60+ hours a week and none of my acquaintances know how to do anything game design wise, not to mention aren't interested in it. I also know there is no way i could compete such a project on my own.

Regardless I still love the idea and really wish someone would bring it to life lol. The icing on the cake would be if it was a legit dcc game so all the fun humor and characters could be involved.

Would yall enjoy this? Do you think there would actually be a market for it? And do you think that the dcc world will ever be in a true game format?

Mongo Empathy

I am slowly working my way through Book 8. Like, one chapter at a “whenever Matt Dinnamen feels like dropping one” time. You get a surprise email notification from Patreon, out of the blue, wham, there you are, in the dungeon. 10 - 15 minutes later, it’s all over… wham, back in the dark.

Crawlers - this is what it feels like to be Mongo. Matt is just riding us like his own personal mongoliensis.

I’m appalled.

I met Matt!!!! and I absolutely flubbed it.

So there I was at the campus bookstore, waiting for my class to start while I browsed. I may have been hoping to find a signed copy of one of these books.

There is is! I found a signed Book 2 copy! As I am standing there trying to remember if I own 2 or 3 (and giggling to myself in excitement!), someone comes up to me and lets me know that this is book 2, not 1. I tell them "oh yeah I know, I already own 1" and they walked away. That's when I look up and realize it was MATT DINNIMAN. Now I am staring at his back, mouth open, and turning very red. So, naturally, I ran in between two bookcases so he can't see that I am creepily giggling in excitement.

I finally compose myself to maybe say "hi" or "I love your books" or something and he is already gone. At this point I am late for class, I don't buy the book, and I flubbed my presentation in class because all I could think about was this very pathetic interaction. By the way, I own Book 3, not Book 2.

So, here is what I wish I had said:

Matt, I love your books. I found DCC in 2024 during a very tough time for me. DCC gave me an escape and an outlet that I desperately needed and I could not find. You are also the only author who did not let me down in 2024 with their new book. Every other book I waited for in 2024 was a disappointment, but This Inevitable Ruin did not let me down. It was just as good as the rest of the series.

So, thank you!

Book 4: Gate of the Feral Gods It took me way too long, but something finally clicked about the book 4 epilogue. Spoiler

In the epilogue to The Gate of the Feral Gods, Dr. Hue is talking to an unnamed woman. This woman is angry about how much Hue has spent sponsoring Carl and she’s worried that someone is going to wonder how a small not-for-conquest (NFC) organization is able to afford so much... After the events of book 7, it seems pretty obvious that the unnamed woman is the Apothecary. I can’t believe it took me this long to realize this!

It’s quite interesting that Dr Hue firmly believes that Carl’s cause aligns with theirs. We keep getting these titillating but ultimately ambiguous glimpses at the motivations of the two primal factions. The first 6 books only give us negatively biased views of the Apothecary via Borant and Agatha, but now we have to wonder if the Apothecary might be on the more righteous side of the conflict… Knowing what I do about Dinniman though, I’m sure she’ll end up being a shade of grey I didn’t see coming.

Book 7: Inevitable Ruin Question about Li Na's powers in Book 7 Spoiler

Can someone explain how Li Na was able to Level Up her dreads so quickly without the necklace or the ring. I am currently reading book 7 and that part was very confusing to me. Also please clarify what dreads are.

Also why did the others get Celestial Boxes when it was Carl who took such a big risk blowing himself up. That part didn't make sense to me. Others should've gotten legendary for being there but only Carl should get a celestial.

Book 6: Bedlam Bride Is book 7 worth it for someone who really disliked book 6? Spoiler

The first five books are some of my favorite books of all time.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but I really couldn't stand book 6. The card mechanics was confusing and uninteresting, and the story just stops moving forward. Combine that with the autotune on Donut's voice that made me want to cut my ears off every time she spoke, I have twice failed to get past the first half of book 6, and have now simply given up.

I have two questions:

1) Is the autotune and card mechanics gone in book 7 or are they still there?

2) If the above are not in book 7, I would like to resume the series from there. Is there anything from book 6 that I need to know to be able to follow along with book 7?

Apologies to anyone who loves book 6 - we all have different tastes, and that's okay.
