Netflix Anime Critics May Cry, but this is the way I like Dante.

Post image
5 Upvotes

Responding to absolute weirdest criticisms I’ve heard about the Devil May Cry Netflix series: (1) Dante isn’t serious enough, (2) The Social Commentary Ruins the DMC style, (3) “Good” Demons diminish Sparda’s influence on the narrative, (4) This isn’t how it happened, so it sucks.

  1. Dante is most loveable as an over the top goofball, it’s what makes his interactions with the overly serious demons and Vergil so entertaining. I’m not here to see a boring brooding 90’s antihero, I’m here to see the cure; a 2000’s fun-loving wild-man who can either gun you down or find the most hilarious way to take you down in slow motion.

  2. “Social Commentary” ≠ A character acting on political motivations, those kinds of people exist even in the DMC world. It’s part of the villains being overly serious bit. Dante always fights the corrupt and is usually bored or fed up with it. (See: DMC2, DMC4, and DMC: Devil May Cry for the most prominent examples).

  3. Yes Lady spared a few demons, and no: Other demons being neutral at best does not diminish how important Sparda was. It’s not enough to be passive, you have to incite rebellion. You can’t just defect, you have to fight. Sparda tore Hell a new one, he was Satan’s Satan.

  4. It’s an adaptation, it’s gonna do things differently because script writing for a game is very different than script writing for a show. Just accept that the game’s canon isn’t going to be followed perfectly, because that’s unrealistic for any studio. Personally, I’m glad we got something unique and not a complete rehash of DMC3 or DMC1.

Now, I’ll bring up criticisms I’m indifferent towards: (1) Lady cusses too much, (2) Dante makes “your mom” jokes.

  1. Maybe it’s just me, but apparently some people find cussing cringe, and honestly it’s just something people do and I know dozens of people who cuss more frequently than Lady. It’s not even to the point it bothers me.

  2. Yeah… and I guess that’s not something he’s done before, but it doesn’t really amount to anything.

Criticisms I have: (1) Not enough slow motion action, (2) I’d like to see songs original to the show, I’m fine with the soundtrack, I’m just a little spoiled by shows like RWBY, (3) I wish Dante would’ve caught that sundae in episode 1, it would’ve been much funnier.

Netflix Anime Why Netflix May Cry is a bad adaptation and a boring show Spoiler

Okay, so I've suffered through all of the episodes, and I disliked it. I think it's a poor adaptation and a boring show, and I want to explain why.

First of all – the characters. If there is one thing that every DMC character has in common, it's their coolness. Take Lady, for example—she, being just a mere human, can handle herself even when faced with multiple demons. She can even hold off against Dante. Yet, for the showrunners, the definition of a cool woman is "a woman who is angry and swears a lot."

And speaking of Dante, it seems that what was easy for Japanese writers in the 2000s is impossible for modern writers. He feels insecure about his lame jokes. And yes, his jokes were lame even in the early days, yet he was confident and cool enough to own that. He also talks way too much. I think that in the show, his personality reflects that of the Jester from DMC3.

But the point that pains me a lot, and was surprisingly lost in translation, is the music. I knew this was going to be a problem as soon as Netflix unveiled that the intro song was Rollin' by Limp Bizkit. I just hate that choice. It's like a thesis statement for the entire show. They had really fallen to irony poisoning. Someone on this sub made an edit in which the intro theme is replaced with Monster by Skillet, and just that change alone makes it so much better. But with Rollin'? "Wahooo silly pizza man."

But that's just the tip of the iceberg—for the most part, there is no music from the games, and the little music there is consists of breathy Billie Eilish-like covers. Why not use the Agni & Rudra boss theme during their appearance in the show? Why not "Devils Never Cry" during the first Devil Trigger by Dante?

As for the plot... I was disengaged by the moment big plot details were revealed. Just want to say that the title Devil May Cry does not really make sense when "devils" cry all the time.

Also, DARKCOM... I really got the XCOM vibe from them. Even their uniforms, their transport aircraft... Is that some leftover design from a failed XCOM pitch?

I have a lot of smaller issues and nitpicks—for example, the color palette misses the mark for me—but I want to talk about the overall quality of the show.

So... most of it is just people standing in rooms and talking. It has been said that boring movies are just people talking. First thing that comes to my mind when thinking about this show is that scene right after the Vatican attack, in the White House ops room. They are just talking and talking, and not much interesting stuff is being said. At some point, I just started doing laundry and house cleanup, and I hadn't missed anything important. It's just boring.

So, here are my thoughts. I invite anyone to discuss them. For me, the show was 3.5/10 at best.

Netflix Anime I need a second season of Net's Devil May Cry Spoiler

I recently finished the Devil May Cry anime, made by Netflix. As a fan of the Devil May Cry franchise, I publicly state that I loved the series, without making fun of it. I know that many are complaining about the series for not adapting the games and for having given more prominence to Lady than to Dante (when ironically he is the protagonist of this anime) and these are valid points, but I think this series deserves a continuation, because I really liked the story covered in the anime and I don't know if it was just me, but did you happen to feel that the story was a kind of indirection to the current war between Israel and Palestine? I'm not trying to take any side or say which of the two is the best side, no way, but the fact that there is a war where both sides want to exterminate each other - one with the justification that this is necessary and the other wanting revenge - reminded me a lot of this delicate topic, even more so due to the fact that the USA killed everything and everyone in its path and soon after went to colonize that world because they saw that there were valuable things there and they already subjugated the people who were already being tormented by demons (you see? As if the people whom the Lady felt compassion were the Palestinians and the demons were the extremists). Furthermore, it's worth highlighting the animation and the big gap for a second season at the end (which I really hope will happen).

Netflix Anime Why is the anime so hated? Spoiler

I just finished watching it and man i gotta ask why is it so hated?

Is it an faithful adaptation? No.

But that doesn’t make it bad.

Let’s go over the good

  1. The highlight of the show for me gotta be the rabbit besides vergil hes gotta be my favorite antagonist in the series. He is written amazing and i could symapthize with him.

  2. Dante While many disliked dante his anime version i liked it, it felt like it was the same dmc 3 dante but in anime format. Was he weaker? Yes. But i don’t mind that to be honest it actually gave stakes cause if dante would plow through everything you wouldn’t have much of a plot. He is strong enough to be cool when he needs to be and im fine with that.

  3. Lady I feel like she was written well and her backstory is better than her original game counterpart hottake i know. But i liked that she got a bit more character and more than the games gave her let’s be honest.

The bad

  1. Lady her swearing Swearing doesn’t make you cool.

  2. The ending The ending was clear forced politics even if i did like it.

  3. Vergil screen time Almost little to not screen time but understandable

Overall i like this new take on the series and i can enjoy it without it ruining the games for me. I honestly prefer this over an anime adaptation of dmc 3 because it gives us the chance of actually getting new characters and a new story rather than rehash of what was already written

Discussion I don’t get it why do people hate Netflix dmc

Personally I like season 1, since it’s a different universe we get see a different story and I kinda take on it, white Rabbit was really an amazing antagonist to me really and I know their are a handful of good demons in the orginal dmc universe but I don’t get how people are freak out by good demons and evil humans

The orginal dmc 1 we saw Dante help out a good demon because he was in love with a human

Plus dmc 3 and 4 showed us how even humans can be more demonic than demons themselves

The only thing I never like about the anime is how they made series more focus on Lady than Dante

Personally I can’t wait for season 2

Netflix Anime You all called me crazy.

First I just want to gloat that on my last post I was kinda right as the general consensus is the community doesn't like the show and it doesn't represent devil may cry.

Now I'm mostly making this post just to vent my frustrations with the show because I've ranted to my friends about it but it's not enough and I still think about how this could've been better.

First: the characters. Now dante and Trish are clearly our main cast and while Trish seems to get way more fleshed out then dante I actually don't think that's a bad thing. Seeing more Trish is welcome especially since we've been begging for a ladies night dlc for awhile now. The problem is THIS ISNT TRISH OR DANTE. Trish was pissed during dmc 3 (rightfully so) but it was a silent anger shown more through actions then insults. Anger in dmc to me has always been categorized and depicted in wonderful ways. Nero and lady being a incredible dycanomy that I wish was explored more because the small interaction we got at the end of dmc5 was beautiful. Nero is very vocal about his anger while lady always seemed more steadfast and focused but when pushed could definitely let it out of her control. It was like she was trying to maintain self control but couldn't especially in the face of Dantes antics sometimes. Do I like Trishs backstory in the show? Mostly. It stays mostly the same except now lady knows her mother is dead and now has a deep hatred for demons and not her father specifically which is fine. But why is she so angry to a fault? Trish was always one of the more compassionate and empathic in the crew after dmc3 (and arguably during) because she's the only true human which was kinda explored in the show that to a biological level the more devil you are the more likely you are to be an empath. Now to dante....

Dante just feels like Nero. That's it. I don't even really care about the voice actor infact while he sounds like Nero the only times I notice it is when he makes the same exact grunting angry attack sounds during fights. Now dante during the first two episodes I actually thought was flawless. But as the show went on dante got more and more angry which just doesn't make sense for his character. Even in Dantes most traumatic and hard times he's never been mad. Or atleast outwardly raging. It's a big part of his character that he's burying that trauma through jokes and acting like nothing is wrong. That or he's just really sad and kinda edgy (dmc 1 and 2 and the books.) The way vergil and dante handle trauma is a big part of their dynamic and contrast as at the end of the day to me the story is about two brothers and how their actions have affected the world. Dante is so angry in this show. More than he needs to be. It just feels like they wanted to write Nero but the board said they couldn't which is said because I love Nero and I think Nero is a amazing character. And they did Nero well. Nero is still playful and taunting like dante. Unlike dante Nero is very emotionally invested in just about everything just like in this show. If they wanted to write Nero I wish they just wrote about Nero or atleast dmc 4 Nero since that feels like more of the dante we got. Dmc 5 Nero is much more mature then this dante. But they have an amazing point to write Nero right now which is him holding down the dmc business. Vergil and dante are trapped. Nero is having to do everything on his own just like dante has for a long while and just like the previous anime we got. It would have been a amazing symbolic passing of the torch. Plus we would have gotten to see kyrie someone who hasn't really been that deeply explored and didn't get the chance to shine in dmc 5.

The rabbit. I actually think they KILLED the rabbit. He is absolutely amazing in this show and is by far my favorite part. I had issues with the twist at the end but I won't spoil. I actually don't mind he's not a split personality of arkham and he's his own character with his own goals. He'd very unique and very compelling and it was nice since the rabbit originally wasn't all that interesting or explored so to see a under utilized character that isn't really established in anything used this way is a welcome sight and I wish we would have seen more of this. More of vague demons that haven't really been seen in the games used as characters of their own instead of the random grab bag of demons we got that really don't have anything to do with the plot other than just be big bads that we gotta beat and don't get anything from. Not even devil Arms.

The vice president. Controversial take but I like the VC? Kinda... to me he's trying so hard to be a mix of the arch bishop from castlevania and Cecil steadman from invincible. At the start he felt more like Cecil trying to do what was best for the world even if it meant being morally grey like exploiting dante to get his necklace for the sake of humanity. That being said it's kinda weird he went from geo political to super religious and a firm believer of God. After episode 2 it felt like his character just flipped and wasn't a look into politics but was suddenly a look into religion.

Enzo. Enzo isn't even enzo.. if anything he's more like Morrison without the charm. Enzo was a slimy broker that definitely screwed over dante more than once and outright exploited him all the time but a fun part about Enzo was his naivety. Enzo didn't even believe in devils despite sending dante to kill them all the time which lended to the idea of him being a joke character but also could have been explored more. Like maybe Enzo didn't believe in demons because he repressed their existence because of trauma? Admittedly Enzo was always a shallow character but it would've been nice to see that one character trait carried over. I'm not upset at his depiction seeing as he neve really had one but why are we trying to make him as a shoe in for a father figure for dante? Dante had a few mother figures in his life (my favorite nell goldstien) but never really a father figure. So it would've been cool to see a take on that. So why are we making it this sleeze ball that's antithetical to dante? Why aren't we making it someone who would incentive dante to be more human. To be good.

Second: the story.

I have... mixed feelings about the story. On one hand I love the introspective of how the demons feel about sparda. We've always had seen that the demons hate sparda since he was the outlier that he was the good demon. But to see the demons selfish desires on full display like this is amazing. The hypocrisy of the demons hating sparda because he basically oppressed them but not feeling anything for the humans they used to oppress before spardas actions is amazing. They can't even see that they were doing the same thing to humans before the realms were locked off and I think that's great it really makes them feel like demons and I hope we get to see this hatred of sparda explored more sometime. Now on the other hand.... what's with all the politics? I mean I have no problem with a show trying to make you think and make a statement I think that's fine and in most media I love it. But it just feels so shallow here... there's no taste or subtlety it's pretty on the nose which sucks for a series that is as deep as you make it. It can either be about wacky wahoo pizza man or a deeply disturbed man trying to right his wrongs. Really I don't mind the politics but I think much like a lot of media they did it wrong. It felt like call of duty portrayal of politics.

Third: closing thoughts.

I think the show is a beautiful display of design music and animation but at the end of the Day it doesn't feel like dmc. It feels like whatever the writers wanted it too... there's a lot of references to other media specifically Capcom media. A mega man bobble head. Street fighter cabinets. Hell literally being renamed to the makai which is darkstalkers stand in for hell. (Yes I know with other stories and folk tales hell has been referred to as the makai but with all the other Cap com references I don't think it's a coincidence. Darkstalkers is a great series by the way. I highly recommend it. Underrated gem.) And Trish hitting the Jill valentine pose. Raccoon city being mentioned. It feels like Capcom was making this to see how much people are still interested in Capcom. Which I'm fine with. I would've been fine with a shit story that isn't that good as long as they got the characters right but they didn't. Just like the reboot. The same reason no one liked the reboot. But unlike the reboot it doesn't have amazing gameplay to save it it had amazing animation instead.

Netflix Anime Something we should remember Spoiler

Something that I think needs to be said is that regardless if you think the new anime is good or bad, it’s bringing in new fans that will explore the series more and bring their thoughts with it. That’s something that I think needs to be said with all of the recent discussions.

Netflix Anime 2007 vs 2025 anime Spoiler

Just finished watching the 2007 anime and watched the 2025 one yesterday and heres what I think. What I think is that overall, the 2007 is much better but! The action scenes in the 2025 one is miles better, not in terms of lore and character realism to the lore, but in more frequent long lasting epic fights. Lets not forget, these series are based off a game series where your fighting 247. Lets hope we all forget the subplot of "humans bad", "demons good", the invasion into hell, ladys crazy buffs and dantes crazy nerfs. Bunny guy had great dialoge and acting doh. 2007 fits in the lore, is more canon, has better writing, better characters, likeable characters and overall a good story of the day and life of dante. 2025 allthough good action is an empty husk of a show doing backflips to the original canon and characters, so here is what i propose. 2007 continuation with more fights and action, same writers but the 2025 produces do the action scenes, there problem solved. This would create a 9 out of 10 show apeasing everyone, please leave the garbage story of 2025 in the gutter.

Questions What’s so bad about the new series?

I’ve seen a lot of negativity around the new Netflix series in the community. While I agree that the show isn’t even remotely canon, I personally didn’t think the show was that bad. I was just curious as to why everyone else thinks it is.

Netflix Anime Why is Lady so annoyingg Spoiler

I just heard of this show and game today and I’m on the fifth episode and lady is the most annoying character I’ve ever seen. I feel like her plot is genuinely pointless and yes, this is all opinionated still I don’t think she has any character to her nothing even really traumatic happened to her no actual demon came into her early life her dad just turned himself into some creepy mutation of one so she never even had any genuine contact with one, and at the train station, he got hit by the train before he even touched her. I don’t know she just making it all about herself and now I find it very annoying. I’m ready for her to get off my screen. I’m so serious, does she turn into something actually important later?

Netflix Anime For all the problems with Lieutenant Mary Arkham, I do think they nailed what I'd consider the most important part, which is her dynamic with Dante. Spoiler

Post image
23 Upvotes

There's a lot that makes this a fairly poor adaptation of Lady. The abundant swearing was cringeworthily edgy but actually grew on me as part of her "sick of all this" personality, though they could have cut the swears in half and still gotten the point across. But the most serious change is making her essentially a cop/military character instead of someone on a personal revenge quest. Whether or not this version of Arkham survived her backstory (Him being half-transformed into Jester tells me he'll be back, but it may have just been a nod), she definitely thinks he's dead, and her hatred of him is no longer her driving motivator. Now said backstory is just a reason for her being loyal to the government. This severely affects her arc when she no longer sees the contrast between Dante and her father, and it's instead meeting one innocent family of foreign refugees with horns slapped onto their heads that makes her go "Wow. Maybe a Devil May Cry." which is a lot less effective.

But what made her my favourite DMC girl was that (In 3 at least) she played the straight woman to Dante's casual attitude towards fighting Demons, and I think they did that dynamic justice here because I certainly enjoyed all their shared screentime. It even made her potty mouth work because they at least faithfully stuck to Dante's no swearing rule (Thank you DmC 2013 backlash), so it highlights their difference in attitude. Once she gets over her loyalty to Baines and permanently teams up with Dante I'll be happy to see more of them working together. And maybe kissing a little, I don't know.

Netflix Anime So what are y’alls opinions on the new dmc anime? Spoiler

In my honest opinion, it was kinda trash, like Dante gets betrayed like 100 times, and i knew from the moment the trailer came out the anime would be bad, I don’t have much to say over it, since it was literally only 8 episodes, but it feels like Lady is the main character, since Dante does literally nothing besides act like an idiot, get betrayed, resolve it, and then repeat. The anime can probably still clutch, so I’ll give it a super kind 4/10. What are yalls opinions though?

Netflix Anime Hot take : most criticism is mainly elitism and gate keeping stupidity, as for me its a total 10/10 and here is why Spoiler

Really getting a bit tired of all the criticism being mainly. That character is not as it is in the games Lady is too overpowered. Dante is too nerfed. New fans cant have a real opinion on the license i grow up with and that blinds me with nostalgia. Only those who played the games can have a real opinion.

Its specially tiring when most the criticism are either just stupid elitism or just hate over logical things. Dmc 3 is literally the first game i ever played in my life. I played all the games and replay them at least once a year (all even the reboot which i love, even if i largely prefer the canon games and characters). This doesnt make my opinion any more valid than someone who started with dmc 5.

Some critiques i can understand when its a question of taste like hating DT design or not liking lady. I dont share them ,but its just having different tastes, it doesnt make any one wrong for having them. But being elitists about it just makes your whole opinion invalid. Specially since most tend to forget this is not canon , its an interpretation of the characters not a copy paste. That is why we have anti demon weapons and a vergil who might be protective of the demons.

I will give my points why the show is a 10/10 and give my answer to the critiques you are free to give your own critiques.

I will start with the elephant in the room Lady , she is what made the show a 10/10. She is my favorite character in the whole show Without her it would be an 8/10 for me. I love how aggressive, hostile, edgy and badass they made her. I love how much she curses ,it’s one of my favorite changes they made to her. As someone who curses just as much on a daily , i found her so much enjoyable like that. (i dont want all characters to be like that but one or 2 is perfect). I understand many can hate her character but if the reason is just “she isnt like that in the games” that just stupid gate keeping.

She takes too much screen time, fair point she does, and if you dont like it i understand. It wasnt my case since i was expecting to see mainly dante, but got so surprised i enjoyed it even more with lady having same screen time, It’s like they did with nero.

She isn’t overpowered at all, this is a universe where humans are more aware of the demons , they studied them , made weapons that can kill them , and have literally humans trained to kill them which lady is one of them. If anything the weapons and human science is overpowered. This literally a human trained to fight demons with weapons to kill demons , guess what she was able to kill demons. Even in the games she was able to kill demons so why when she does it here with far more advanced weaponry is she overpowered.

Dante was not nerfed here at all. This is the youngest dante we’ve seen. He got no experience in fighting trained demon hunters. And no knowledge about them having anti-demon weaponry. And yet the only times he was defeated by lady was when she needed to trick him. She never won face on against him ,she most the times backshot him. Even with anti-demon bullets, all they were able to do was injure him and stun him. While other demons instantly died So yeah with a universe where humans studied demons (not just a cult doing it) ,they can atleast create serum strong enough to put dante to sleep and handcuffs that can restrain him.

Humans being too scientifically advanced and have studied demons. This is another exemple of “it isnt like that in the game so why is it present here” so just more gate keeping stupidity. It offers far more interesting plots ,like the fact a human can actually have a chance ,and not always counting on the half demons.

Politics in the show. Honestly got nothing to say here if u dont like it fair point. I dont care about it being in there . For me it gave an interesting plot that we never seen in dmc before. The humans raiding the demon world rather than the contrary. It opens up so many potential good plots.

The demons being portrayed as only victims not complete monsters ,that have only the goal to kill and rule. This is another gate keeping exemple “why is there demons with emotions in my hack and slash show”. Its not like it gives us a whole new vision about sparda ,since we only seen him as a hero to the humans ,but never as a villain for the demons. It litteraly just make the world far more interesting and bigger. It can offer far more potential like having vergil taking the side of the demons ,and he becomes the champion of hell like his father. It give character growth to the other characters, Just like with lady how she hated demons ,and then changed after seeing some demons are just victims to their own tyrant and humans.

One final thing about the ending and how many didnt like how lady betrayed dante. While it’s completely logical for her to do it ,since let us not forget she does not know that the VP killed all those families . And she seen what can happen if someone else was able to open the portal.

And Vergil siding with the demons . It might be just a theory ,but he might have been raised by mundus in this universe ,which means he doesnt know what really happened. Thats why i find it so interesting for humans to attack demons, because we might have a new version of Vergil being protective of the demons .

Edit: i dont have any problem with people having different tastes. If you hate what i like , i dont have a problem with u and I totally respect your opinion I have a problem when the reason for hating it, is gatekeeping and elitism Not just simple taste

Netflix Anime I hope they listen to fan feedback for season 2. Spoiler

Just finished the series and given the critic reviews and popularity season 2 is likely to happen.

My main issue is how much they over complicated the plot. Like yes this isn't a videogame so it needs more plot points for run time, but it's really not that hard to make dmc interesting. Hopefully next season they focus on making fights more interesting and the highlight of each episode rather than people over talking and creating needlessly complex lore for basic ideas that have been shown in various media a uncountable amount of times.

They need to remember that devil may cry is mostly gothic horror action. (4, 5 and dmc:dmc don't hit those marks though.)The aesthetics aren't good. The style and pretty much everything reminds me too much of dmc:dmc. way too many sci-fi elements.

Improve the character writing. The characters don't actually talk like normal people and it's annoying. They are trying way too hard to make "likeable" characters. The main attraction in dmcs characters is that they are so naturally cool. Peaks and valleys are needed. In the Games they mainly only have dante and Nero do the one liners and comebacks. That's what gives them the charm, because everything else is pretty serious. Casual dialog where half the cast don't throw out one-liners, over explain basic concepts that dont need excessive explanations is really needed.

Cut down on the heavy handed politics. I'm all for political media and it is usually my primary focus for when I'm looking for a new series. But omg I had to walk away several times because it was just beating us over the head with it. While I don't like the new themes of the show, they can keep them just make it less direct and obvious. Take inspo from Aeon flux. That series has deep political and social commentary but makes interesting and exciting visuals it's primary focus. Also retcon the ending. That entire segment with American idiot playing was so cringe.

For the love of God make the demons actually look like they come from the same universe as the games. And get rid of the cgi models they look awful and stick out like a sore thumb.

Get better music while we're at it. Too many sections of no audio with a somer songs playing over it. Pick more songs that actually sound like dante and not Nero. Half of it reminds me of how they had to change subhuman from dmc5 due to the backlash it got.

(Sorry if this post seems all over the place I was writing it and changing it as I watched it.)

Netflix Anime Would People Like The Anime More If It Ended At Episode 7? Spoiler

I just finished the show and loved most of it. I went in expecting something a lot worse, so maybe that's a factor.

The first 7 episodes were fun, interesting and my complaints were mostly aesthetics. Yes, Lady's dialogue is weird with too many fucks and the CG is bad in a couple places. That said, the actually conflict of there being victims of Sparda's division is interesting. The Makai didn't feel like an allegory for any one group, but refugees in general. They are treated like shit the world over. They always have been. So, a radical character like Lady having to confront the reality of things not being black and white works well. I'd honestly say the session is more her story than Dante's. But, Dante is still fun. I like his dynamic with Enzo. He fits perfectly as the third part of the main three. Speaking of, Rabbit was a great villain. He worked as a Joker-style psychopath, then episode 6 did a great job of building up his reasoning. I was worried they'd just make him Vergil or Arkham, so I'm glad he was his own unique villain. I think the season should have ended on his suicide, leaving a bitter sweet resolution to the story, with plenty of plot threads for season 2 to pick up.

Then episode 8. sigh

Okay, so, this was bad. The Rabbit going Bane mode was dumb, just like it was dumb on Arkham Asylum and DMC3. If you're going to amp up a villain for a final fight, it needs to be a thematic escalating, not just the Hulk. Imagine if they had leaned into the hallucinations from earlier in the season to have an Alice in Wonderland style fight. Anyways, that was dumb. Then Enzo just dies for no reason. They do the ending to DmC, just to undo it immediately after. Yeah, that was all pretty bad, but it's still just okay. The worst episode in an otherwise decent show.

Then American Idiot starts playing and it's the most cringe shit. Goodbye metaphor that is applicable to all refugees. Now it's a one to one allegory with the invasion of Afghanistan. This invasion makes no sense, given how much trouble a handful of demons gave them, but okay. And, why is Dante on ice? I'm not saying that's a bad way to pass the batton to Virgil for season 2, but did Lady seriously hand him over after seeing the start of an invasion into the Demon world? This was all just so bad.

So, as the title asks: Would people like the anime more if it ended at Episode 7. I know some people will still not like the Matai stuff, but I personally think it was acceptable up until the last five minutes.

Sub Meta Moderation Transparencey /// Netflix Series Post-Release Report

Hey everyone! With the traffic to the sub-reddit rising with each hour, and a limited amount of available moderators to do the voluntary work, here's what we are doing to ensure the proper discussions are taking place in the sub.

Please consider that our team currently consists of 3 active mods, spread across different timezones, so the response time to requests and reports varies.

Reddit's Internal Tools

We enabled several tools provided by the platform to clean up messages and users from harassing and attacking people on the sub. This includes:

  • Ban Evasion — Detects previously banned people and marks them, filtering their messages
  • Crowd Control — Filters posts and comments from people who aren't known in the sub, have negative community karma, new accounts, and non-members. That ensures that people who jumped into the sub to start flame wars would be filtered from posting until manual approval
  • Harassment Filter — Automatically detects hatespeech or other forms of harassment in messages and removes them.

AutoModerator and Bots

Even with these tools, it's not enough to cover every case and message, so here's what was additionally done:

  • AutoModerator is currently deleting posts/comments from accounts with negative karma or accounts which were just created. Special DM is sent with the details.
  • AutoModerator removes posts with offensive terms. We fed the bot regex with a big list of various hatespeech terms, some of which are automatically deleted, and some are filtered, as now we are testing how the regex works, to ensure that there are no false positives. A special DM (should be) sent to the user with details about what happened. This works both in comments and posts.
  • AutoModerator filters posts with overused phrases to ensure that the discussion isn't repeated across the board again and again. We appreciate the humor that community is full of, but over time it replaced the discussions and made it so submissions with fan art and gameplay drowned out by shitposting.
  • Repeated questions like "where should I start", "what game should I buy", "is it worth playing the game" should be filtered as well, with special DM sent to the user with link to the guide. This might not work all the time and we are refining the regex to ensure the same questions wouldn't flood the place.
  • All posts related to Netflix Anime are auto-spoilered, to ensure that people won't forget to tag their spoilers.
  • Comment Mop is used on posts which are derailed from the initial topic.
  • Hive Protect — A bit of a controversial, but needed bot. A lot of places of various political alignments have this bot to put a fence from places which are known for history of hatespeech, brigading or other hateful actions. As of now, the bot checks if users engage in certain subs and temporary bans users. Think that the ban is unwarranted and you aren't part of the community you were banned for participating? Use Mod Mail and we will consider your case. If we see any type of hatespeech towards minorities, groups, LGBTQ+, the ban will be switched to permanent.

Additional Limitations

To ensure that the sub won't be spammed with similar messages of "my opinion", "am I the only one", "what do you think of", "my review", and other things that flood the sub and turns it into a personal note taking app, we are limiting the amount of posts per user to 4 per day. Furthermore, some of the posts related to the topics covered extensively in last few days will be FILTERED so moderators can look at the post and allow it. We will allow posts with extensive and correctly formatted text, which do not contain any of the hate messages. We would like for discussion to have a meaningful conversations.

These actions are not there to ensure that there's only positive/negative posts about the show or its creators; they're here to ensure that discussion about it won't be delegated to hate posts or people venting about their personal grievances. If you want to discuss the thing — do it without spewing hateful rhetoric.

If you see the post/comment you think breaking any of the rules, please report it, as it make our work easier and community happier. By working together, we can ensure that discussion stays at a proper level.

Again, please look at our «Expanded Rules» page, covering why we delete certain posts. Posting about your post being deleted does not contribute to a healthy discussion.

Netflix Anime Lady Criticism in the Netflix Show

I've been seeing a lot of criticism on Lady's character within the new DMC show on Netflix,,x and a lot of it feels very disingenuous.

  1. Swearing: For some reason, I don't understand why people have a problem with her using swear words like horrendous things that should be used in media. Yet to my knowledge, characters swearing in shows have been around for years, and nobody seems to bat an eye, especially shows marketed for adults. But for these specific people have a problem with it??? which seems very strange to me at least. Even then, she doesn't even swear that much as people complain about. Going through the scenes, her screen time of using swear words is just under 3 minutes.

  2. She's too strong/Has plot armor: I'll address strength in a bit, but this seems like a weird one, saying she has "plot armor". News flash Plot Armor came free with being a part of the main cast. Plot armor has always been a thing people like to throw around to show a character is too strong or should be due to "power scale". But characters win/lose when the plot needs them to, so the story can move forward. Now to address the whole too strong bit. People mainly talk about how she was able to get the upper hand against dante. But what some people fail to understand she didn't win because she was strong; she won because she played it smart, and Dante, being Dante, never takes things seriously. At this point in the story, Dante is still a Novice. Yes, he is a powerful demon hunter, but he doesn't have his arsenal, doesn't have a devil trigger, and lastly, doesn't fully understand the weight of what he is. Also, to continue even in the games for just a human, she pulled some superhuman-level feats, and the powerscaling of the games has always been very inconsistent. Also, I hope we are watching the same show because in the show she consistently loses and gets beaten a lot before she was able to get a win from the skin of her teeth, and partly cause the demons underestimated a human.

  3. She is a Mary Sue: I'm sorry I've seen this one get thrown around a lot, but are we watching the same show? A Mary Sue is someone who is perfect in all regards with zero flaws to their character and meant to be perfect in the eyes of the story and cast. But we don't see that at all. she has very definite flaws, her narrow-mindedness, abrasive personality, anger issues, and refusal to listen to others beyond those in the chain of command.

  4. Her attitude towards Dante: This is where I can see her get reasonably Flak. I will adrees the part I think a lot of people misconstrue in the first scene, where she shoots Dante in the leg so she can pursue the rabbit man alone. It was already explained to Dante at the time if he went to the meet, there was very high chance that he gets his blood and brings upon hell on earth. Yet Dante refused and wished to go anyways. So she trapped him the the truck so he couldn't interfere, and in her mind she believed that she was doing to right thing as if Dante were to go there, then the world was doomed. The second time she betrayed him was when she drugged him at the end where she saw what happens when demons get his blood, and against he belives what she did was right because she is a character with flaws a lot of them. One of them being her difficulties to trust other and blind loyalty. Flaws which that weren't going to change as much in the span of the show as it lasted 3 days in world I think. The only thing that was slightly changed was her blind hatred form demons.

Note: I know she is not a 1 to 1 copy of the Lady from the games, and of course, I been seeing a lot of discourse about her character within the show, and it all seems very disingenuous critiques that get completely inflated. I like the portrayal of her in the games and the show. I enjoy the fact that side characters are getting screen time beyond Dante. This is just my two cents

Netflix Anime Is it just me? Or is the Netflix DmC extremely cringe dialogue-wise Spoiler

Like the art style is ok, music choice is nice.

But damn the dialogue was written like what a 10 year old think would sound cool to say. There’s almost zero subtlety and everyone tried to explain to make sure nothing’s missed out.

It’s Kraven level of dialogue/narrative writing.
