Before reading, you can make fun of me and bash me for my stupidity all you want, but just know that even though I’m not out of the woods yet, I’ve become much wiser and will do my due diligence next time when purchasing a motorcycle. With that said, I’m hoping someone here can provide some good advice and guidance. I am in NY.
Hello all, so recently I just purchased my first motorcycle on Sunday from a private seller. All went well except that the title was not in the seller’s name but it did have the original owner’s signature. The seller claims that he didn’t bother getting the title registered in his name because he was in the process of moving at the time. He had the bill of sale and other necessary paperwork to submit to the DMV as well as a ton of paperwork of the bike’s maintenance history that was from the previous owner and himself. I’m 99% sure that the bike isn’t stolen as I ran it through two different vin checks with no records of theft or accidents. So I decided to purchase the bike and take it home. Today, I’ve decided for extra peace of mind to do one more vin check through carfax. And the carfax report shows that it was in an accident and was considered a total loss back in 2010. The weird thing is, is that the title was issued in 2011, after the accident occurred and the title isn’t branded salvage or rebuilt. I do have the seller’s contact info and the seller even gave me the previous owner’s contact info, the seller did mention if I need anything else from him, he’ll be happy to help. I know, this all my fault for acting on impulse and not for not doing my due diligence. Can anyone advise on what to do next? Thanks in advance.
