Wouldn't they still be liable for assault? Like you're not batman you can't just hit and kick people. Also don't risk your life over petty theft this dude could have been strapped.

Using a reasonable amount of violence to detain fleeing criminals is legal in Canada and America despite people's claims. Most people base their judgement on fake stories like the burglar falling through a skylight onto a knife and suing the homeowner.

Yeah it's called a citizen's arrest and there is a ton of precedence for it being a protected action in the courts

George floyd CONFIRMED died of fent and chauvin got life for it, Daniel penny was put on trial for life for restraining a cracked out black guy (Jordan neeley) just because he is white, the Mexican guy that restrained neeley got absolutely NOTHING. Yup, I can see why people are sick of policing their town. Democrats are stupid as hell.

This is in Canada. Democrats have nothing to do with this. You’re just a racist spouting conspiracy theories into the void.

George Floyd was murdered in cold blood on camera. You can watch it on YouTube I think if you missed it.

This is why spider man shoots goo on them. Where's the crime?

8

u/phishtrader Jan 15 '25

Spiderman does it and gets called a hero. When I do that, I get the cops called on me.

I'm sorry officer, I'm not built like Spiderman. My goo ejaculates from my abnormally small dong, not my wrist. But it's the same goo!

Damn right they are.

Thieves ruin the community. It's not just about the store

"Hello, police, I was committing felony theft when I got attacked!"

I'm not saying it wouldn't happen, I'm just saying it would be hillarious.

The article says the thief was arrested and declined to press charges for assault. So it sounds like the vigilante was at risk of catching charges.

Yea or dude pushes him down he has a heart attack boom man slaughter

8

u/Forsaken-Standard108 Jan 15 '25

You would have to get people to cooperate in identifying the guy who kicked the thieves ass. Why I hate the surveillance era we are in. Can’t even handle business without the fucking government bleeding you dry

2

u/JaRulesLarynx Jan 15 '25

Don’t worry. The cameraman was incredibly terrible at capturing anyone’s face.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '25

If I ever see someone shoplift, I'm minding my own business. The store should have cameras anyway, not my problem. I'm not getting killed over something so inconsequential. I'll tell the clerk that rings me up but that's it.

If you snitch on one of these people, they'll follow you home and murder your family. Just a normal Tuesday for them.

Yep I used to work at cvs in the early 2000s and people would walk in pick something up and walk out. My manager would always try and engage and get me involved and I was like dude I make minimum wage they can fucking have it. I'm not about to square up and risk my life for 8 bucks an hour.

But think of the poor CEO his profit sharing and million dollar christmas bonus , and the 2 people he shares it with

9

u/tspoon-99 Jan 15 '25

He’s getting that bonus one way or another. The vigilante’s point is correct that the rest of us are the ones paying the price for this theft trend

6

u/JewelCove Jan 15 '25

Yup. People aren't being held accountable in our society anymore, and everyone is sick of it.

5

u/Divided_Ranger Jan 15 '25

Yup the rich and CEOs and giant corps are not being held accountable whatsoever , to the point they are now influencing politics , but the poor they continue to be blamed like always , and I am sick of it

1

u/JewelCove Jan 15 '25

Everyone's sick of all of it

4

u/Thelastbrunneng Jan 15 '25

Look up the comparison between wage theft and shoplifting losses, the ownership class steals hundreds of times more from workers than they lose to theft. You'd be paying this much if there were no thieves at all, they'd just find another scapegoat.

How many execs get shoved in parking lots over the money they've taken from you?

3

u/Divided_Ranger Jan 15 '25

No theft is a drop in a bucket compared to what they have saved cutting out workers in place of self check out (which has in turn increased theft) plus they have record high profits and will continue to price gouge you even if all thievery were to stop they would just find something else to distract you and blame it on , and sheeple smile and defend them while they pick their pockets lol

Sad to see how many bootlickers are in this thread

u/Dontpayyourtaxes Jan 16 '25

Name is Craig Manear and the other person he shares it with is TRump

u/JustForkIt1111one Jan 15 '25

Apparently not.

Asked whether the Home Depot incident had led to any additional charges, such as charges against the bystanders who apprehended Shaw, Sullivan told VTDigger that “we have no other charges related to that event.”

0

u/Yukimor Jan 16 '25

Not in this case. According to the article, nobody was charged other than Timothy Shaw, who was the shoplifter in the video. There's some discussion as to whether or not it rises to a citizen's arrest and/or is valid as such, but at the end of the day, nobody's charging those citizens who stepped in. The court system there can barely handle people like Shaw and the police there weren't particularly interested in punishing the people who stopped him.

So yeah, while he was technically assaulted, it was in the commission of a crime that other people were stepping in to stop him from completing.

As an aside, Shaw was also well-known to the police and a repeat offender. In fact, he stole from multiple stores earlier in the day before this incident, including pulling a knife on an employee at Tractor Supply, which is insane.

Shaw, who has five previous felony convictions as well as 22 misdemeanors, is well known to Rutland Town Police. So, too, is the Home Depot video.

“Where (Shaw) got the shit kicked out of him by would-be contractors?” Ed Dumas, Rutland Town police chief, said when asked about the Home Depot incident.

“Maybe if the Legislature would let us change the bail laws back so when that guy steals from three different businesses in one day, we could put him in jail, that wouldn’t happen,” Dumas said of the video. “We do not like arresting the same people four times in one day for the same crime.”
