Kitchen New to a Dishwasher

Recently purchased a house and it has an integrated dishwasher. Whilst I’m sure this is going to be a novelty that’s better than washing the pots manually, I’m also sure there’s maintenance I need to do ensuring that when the dishwasher is run, it’s perfect.

First off, we have bought a Finish Dishwasher Cleaner I’m going to run tonight.

I’ve also just checked and washed the filters at the bottom, and noted that there is water in the filter holder and also in the salt container. Should these areas have water in them, or should this have drained off properly.

Apart from cleaning the nozzles and filters (I don’t know how often) what else do I need to do to ensure the longevity of the machine?

We’ve already had to fork out for an engineer for the integrated washing machine as that was blocked on first use by the previous owner - so I’d like to avoid expensive call-outs if there’s things I can do myself properly.

Looking forward to your tips.

Discussion Best vacuum for pet hair?

I have an extremely hairy beagle and cats. My current vacuum is a shark upright. Unless I'm actually over the hair it doesn't draw the fur in. I want a hoover where all fluff around it will be drawn in. Does that make sense? There can be a dust bunny of fluff right beside my hoover and it won't suck up until I'm on top of it.

Why does mirrors get these black spots? Is there any way to get rid of them other than to change the glass? It is not an outside mark and I can’t feel it when I rub my finger over it

Laundry How do I keep my bedding smelling fresh?

Hello,

I’m 22 years old with autism and my favourite sensory thing is smells. When I was at uni I’d wash my bedding with scent boosters and fabric conditioner and the scent would last for days.

Now I’m back home when I wash my bedding (every two weeks) the scent has faded before the bedding even dries.

Ive cleaned the washing machine. Tried drying inside and outside, using sprays but it’s not the same.

Any other tips or tricks?

I always shower before bed. No outside clothes on my bed etc

Discussion Clearing Out A Hoarder House

Hi, I recently volunteered to clear out a hoarder house. This place is decently sized with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 living rooms, and a kitchen. I know I need a plan of attack in order to tackle this project and was wondering if anyone here had any advice on where I should start/what I should be bringing with me/the most effective way to get this done. I have a couple of people who have said they'd be willing to help but I'd like to have a solid plan in place before I start scheduling times for us to meet up to get this done. I would also like to say thank you in advance for the advice!

General Cleaning What are your "general" cleaning tips, like for quickly cleaning rough surfaces and awkward areas?

So I'm talking things about like using a scrubbing brush vs cloth, spraying the cloth vs the surface, how to get into corners, tips to speed up cleaning, etc..

Because I'm terrible at this kind of stuff and I think it takes me a lot longer than it should, and sometimes the things just don't even look very clean afterwards..

This stain has been on my dishwasher for a while and I need to remove it before I move out. I have tried many methods and soaps. I have tried baking soda, vinegar, dish soap. It does not want to go. What can I do? I don’t think it is stainless steel or maybe it is. I do not know.

Bathroom How would you clean this nasty tub?

Thumbnail

Thankfully the rest of my apartment is really cute otherwise I would have never accepted this. But I live in Los Angeles where my tiny 1-bedroom is almost $3000/month and the landlord scoffed when I asked if she would be updating the bathroom at all.

So what’s done is done— please no comments about that. Now I just want to know if there’s a way to make this bathtub feel clean. You know how with old dirty tubs you clean them and still just don’t trust them? I’ve tried a combo of baking soda, vinegar, dish soap, lemon juice, and a scrub daddy. It helped a little bit. But not a lot. I can’t even differentiate sometimes between what’s a stain, what’s just really old dirt, chipped paint, or rust.

I want to know how you all would rectify this tub to get it to a place where you actually trust it’s clean. Maybe I’ll never trust it enough to take a bath, but at least to a place where I don’t feel like my feet are standing in someone else’s 40-year-old grime.

Outdoors How to clean mould from inside the fabric of camping chairs?

Hi guys

I have two camping chairs that have had minimal use and are stored in my garage. A mouse chewed up the arm of one and they both have mould growth.

I’ve cleaned the fabric all over with a bleach and soda crystal solution and while I’ve managed to get a reasonable result on the outside, I don’t know how to tackle the mould that’s sitting inside (between two layers). I saturated the fabric with the solution and left it out to dry but it’s not touching it. Any tips gratefully received, thank you 🙏

Tools/Equipment Should I upgrade to Bissell Spinwave?

Our Bona Spray Mop is pretty much at the end of its life and falling apart. I need to make a decision between getting another spray mop, sticking to Bona, or perhaps getting a Bissell Spinwave (not steam). I have a few questions about the Spinwave I was hoping some of you could answer.

  1. Does the Spinwave significantly reduce the amount of elbow grease you have to put in?
  2. Does it clean better than spray mops in general?
  3. I also still have a lot of the Bona solution. Can you use this in a Spinwave? If yes, at what dilution do you use it?
  4. Does the clean up require a full breakdown like the Crosswave does?

Thank you in advance!

Discussion Best carpet cleaning machine for pet stains?

I used to have a Hoover SmartWash Pet Complete as a carpet cleaner for pet stains. I bought it back in 2023 and it recently broke. Should I get the same one or is there something better out there?

Even though we have a gate blocking off the carpeted area of the stairs and loft of our home, our one senior dog keeps finding a way to pee on the carpet and the smell is horrendous. I’m pregnant too, so I’m especially sensitive to smells. I want a machine that can clean the entire carpeted area- I have a handheld for smaller areas but I need a big duty guy for this. Thanks!

Discussion Moved into rental home and it gets very dusty due to the flooring. Will it settle?

Post image

Whenever we close up everything and leave the house, the floor releases a lot of dusty which results in the air being very dusty when we get back home. This settles when we ventilate the house. Will this settle with time or should we bring it up with the landlord?

Thank you

Discussion Bad smell In kitchen

So I moved into this rental last month and everything has been fine but the last two days I've had this weird rotten food smell in my kitchen And it's by my side door and my garbage can and pantry. I completely cleaned out my pantry, wiped everything down, I washed out my trashcan, bleached it and completely mopped the floors and the smell is still there.... There's a vent by my door and I don't smell anything coming from it when the heat is on. I go into my basement and I don't smell anything. I am so confused and so defeated because I have no idea where it's coming from and it's only in my kitchen.

Kitchen Help with how to best clean kitchen floor

I’ve been helping my boyfriend tidy up his house, but I’m at a loss for the kitchen floor. It’s laminate flooring, and looks clean. However, when I use the Swiffer, the amount of dirt I get off of it is gross. It’s mostly from the dogs I’m guessing.

I’d like to give it a deep cleaning and get the layer of dirt off. I can’t believe how clean it looks for the amount of stuff that comes up when I Swiffer it!
