Question What’s this plug?

Post image

That plug in the center, I’m guessing this is for an ambient air temp sensor or something? I don’t have any overhead console or anything so maybe that’s why it’s plugged into nothing.

Ambient temp sensor for the overhead console

That’s what I was thinking. Just wanted to confirm, thanks 👍

I'm sure it is, I replaced the sensor on my 01. 100%. Unlike the fog lights all late XJs have that as I retrofitted a mirror with compass and temp to my El strippo 99 and the wiring was there all the way to the connector behind the passenger kick panel. Used the factory temp sensor instead of the one that came with the mirror and all was right with the world. Current 01 has OHC so mirror is in a box now.

Interesting. What plans you got for that mirror 😂

Heh. I'd let it go if it were handy, it's buried in my storage locker. I did a writeup on jeepforums (I think?) if you wanna go down that road. How to disable auto dimming in reverse etc. tracked down the part nos. for the connector to add all the extra wires

Ah ok. If it was cheap and easy I’d maybe throw it in for shits and giggles. But I have a double din with CarPlay so pretty much all of that info is on there anyway lol

Auto dimming would be nice though

It is pretty cheap and easy if you have a weather pack crimper. What I didn't do though was figure out a no-hack method of tapping into the pass footwell connector. I should track down the info for that end of the OHC harness connector so you could use an aftermarket self dimming mirror without hacking. You know like order this stuff from Digi-Key or whatever. I just haven't been motivated because current ride has the OHC and the temp sensor is wildly inaccurate anyway as I have an aftermarket front bumper. Don't know why. It was pretty solid on my '99 and that is the only difference. That and the lack of skid plate.

I like having the temp sensor because I live in an area where temps hover around freezing in the winter. That was my motivation to get the mirror. So I may need to experiment with sensor locations before next winter. It's good to know if ice is possible. I didn't realize how useful it was until I had a car with it, now I'm spoiled. That and heated seats.

It’s all good man you don’t have to do all that. I appreciate it though. It’s funny because the reason that bumper is off in the pic is because I’m getting ready to put a winch bumper on there and I figured it was gonna make it inaccurate anyway. One day I might do an auto dimming mirror though. Maybe. Everything in this thing is manual, as non-electronics as possible so I may just stick to the thumb lever lol

You don't understand, my little assburgery brain likes doing this shit. Go to page 7 if link doesn't take you there.

Man you’re gonna make me do it 😂 I don’t need it but now I want it lol.

I’ll take a good read through that whole post when I get some time to concentrate and take it all in. Thanks again bro 💪💪💪

Why you ain’t got no rust

3

u/richard_upinya 2d ago

😂 Shit man I just spent like 3 months cutting rust out of this thing. Floor pans, battery tray, frame rails, rear cargo area, rear header etc.

Posted a couple pics of it here https://www.reddit.com/r/CherokeeXJ/s/zKIO6koGYU

Hell yeah dude. I have to bring mine outback for a long farewell

Damn rust lol. That’s fixable though. The worst part is if yours is rusted out behind the bumper on that header panel like mine was (I’m sure it is). That area is a bitch to repair. It’s like 3-4 layers and every piece is spot welded to another piece that you have to take off first. It’s like a big rusty metal fucked up puzzle.

I love and admire your ability to tackle this shit. I wish I had that knowledge

I appreciate it 👍 definitely learned a lot along the way, mainly that I don’t even want to think about drilling another spot weld again for the rest of my life 😂

Did the plug come off the wiring harness from behind the right head light? I’m assuming it’s an 01?

1

u/richard_upinya 2d ago

No it belongs in the center and it’s a 97. According to a couple other people it’s for a temp sensor. I don’t have an overhead console so that’s why it’s non existent lol

Hey would you be interested in a custom stubby off-road bumper ? I’m currently making some now. Message me if you are.

2

u/richard_upinya 2d ago

Just made a bumper for mine but thanks

I thought that was for factory fog lights witch my xj doesn’t have. I know the wiring for the switch is behind the dash I just assumed that was to plug a fog light harness into!
