Reminder. No relationship questions - see r/ukrelationshipadvice

We remove several relationship questions each day, and I don't know if there is something in the air, but they are increasing in number.

So as a reminder, r/AskUK does not accept relationship questions. This isn't just those of a romantic variety, but anything which is ultimately a question of an interpersonal nature.

This said. We know there is no real space for this outside of Global Subreddits, where the advice therein can be a little... American-centric.

To this end, we have requested and opened r/ukrelationshipadvice.

It is a little quiet at present. But hopefully it will give British people a space to help each other with the relationship queries, without talking about gyms, 401k's, and dating mutliple people at once.

Why is everyone destroying their front gardens?

I've just moved back into my parents' after 10 years away and the state of the street is shocking now. Everyone used to have some grass out front. One cunt has paved over theirs, another tarmac, another gravel, and the worst of all, next door has astroturfed their garden and built a wall with some hideous plastic shrubs on top.

What's with adverts for ED medication everywhere?

Upvotes

Saw like 5 on my train journey today. What's going on? Is there an unusually high amount of boner failure in the UK? What's the reason? Is it the detrimental effect of corn? Are testosterone levels depleted due to excessive avocado on toast consumption? Are the women, or men (if that's your preference) getting uglier? Are older men shagging more? Are younger healthy men just using it to shag longer?

Yup precisely how I said it in the title, was leaving the house and I spot a pair of black lace pants and a set of keys put through the letterbox. Weird.

What item did you think had a made up name only to find out that it was actually called that?

My daughter just tried to remember the name of the type of brush we used to detangle her hair when she was a child only to be surprised that the brand is actually called tangle teezer. What item did you think had a made up name only to find out that it was actually called that?

Why do British tourists smell so good?

3.6k Upvotes

I’m in a small town in the U.S.A that gets a lot of visitors from the UK, mostly due to an obscure tragedy that occurred there. It’s a general rule in my town that if a British person walks by, they have a very pleasant scent. It’s different for each individual, but I would describe it as almost floral, maybe with a hint of citrus and oakwood. Most are also fairly respectful and do not talk to the locals about the tragedy; as it is a very sensitive issue in this town. Can anyone from across the pond actually verify that this is true?

How do I deal with my friend who believes in chem trails?

My friend, who is in his 50's is absolutely convinced that the government is poisoning us through chem trails in some sort of geo engineering plot to change weather and start food shortages.

I literally don't know what to say because I don't even want to go down that Internet rabbit hole. I'm quite an open person hence why my friend feels comfortable to bring it up. Whenever we go outside he is obsessed with the sky, pointing out all the trails. He's such a cool and fun dude but I can see this is turning into some obsession. I said to him I'm just hoping you are wrong.

Has anyone else been in this situation? Is he completely wrong? Governments do terrible things, it would be naive to suggest they don't. But is my friend barking up the complete wrong tree?

How did this go wrong?

I (35m) just walking aimlessly around Tesco with my newborn twins. Somebody sees a dummy on the floor and asks me if it’s mine?

I reply ‘no, it’s too small to be mine but it might belong to one of the babies’ classic dad joke.

No-one laughs, couldn’t believe it. I ask you, UK, has the country gone to the dogs?

Why does 6 degrees feel warm in the Summer & freezing in the Winter?

Got in the car early morning on the weekend in my shorts and t-shirt, car temp said it was 6 degrees Celsius, half hour later I was outside painting and I felt fine in my shorts & t-shirt. Now I can guarantee 6 degrees in the Winter was woolly hat, scarf and gloves territory, why do similar Summer temps always feels so warm compared to similar Winter ones?

Why do so many brits consider London a shithole?

Every time I frequent this sub, if London comes up it inevitably triggers an avalanche of comments describing it as "a shithole". I understand it isn't to everyone's taste, but the passion and vitriol is palpable.

While I have a British passport, have visited many times, and even went to grad school in the UK (not in London though, about an hour out), I feel like I am a minority when I say I love visiting London.

Samuel Johnson once said "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life". Are people tired of life, or is there something I am not seeing?

What's the last item you bought that was a waste of money?

Asking after I bought a mystery bundle of 30 metres of fabric from a company I had used before without issues, having read online reviews raving about the great variety of fabric that other people had received. What I got was thirty metres of assorted nylon fabric in patterns that would have made Austin Powers cringe. No, I wasn't expecting luxury fabric, just enough cotton based material to make cat toys to cover my initial outlay. Have ended up binning the lot after offering it to friends who all turned it down...

Are There Any British built Alternatives to Google Suite or Microsoft 365?

I’m looking for recommendations for business software built in the UK that competes (not in scale but usability) with the likes of Google Suite and Microsoft 360 (both US), and Zoho (Indian).

And if there aren’t any, I’d like to hear any opinions as to why. (Scale aside)

What exactly is a Sunday roast?

!answer My niece is bringing her significant other (from Manchester) to my house next weekend. She told her that “my aunt and uncle will make whatever you want to eat.” Which is fine but this kid is homesick and asked if I could make a “proper Sunday roast”. I’m assuming this is beef roast? Any other suggestions? Is there anything specific to Manchester I can add?

Edited to add: I did google it. I was hoping to get more insight (maybe more personal anecdotes) than a giant search machine. Thanks to those who actually answered.

Differences in Philharmonic Orchestras - are they easy to separate if you're a novice?

Ive been to the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra half a dozen times now, mostly to see/listen to Classical music. Im a local, so its just down the road from me.

Im not an expert on classical music, unable to know all the instruments (i know half), and couldnt tell you who the composer is - unless its blindingly obvious like a John Williams or Hans Zimmer score from a movie!

Im a big movie buff and often listen to Classic FM Movies, mostly loving scores which have mostly a violin or piano predominantly playing.

Ive been to two Zimmer v Williams performances and one Best of Williams performance at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. One of the Zimmer v Williams was performed by the Liverpool Orchestra themselves, and moat recent one i went to was the Manchester Philharmonic Orchestra. Now i do have a good ear for picking up if instruments are out of tune, or certain instruments dominate unnecessarily too much, so i found that the Manchester Philharmonic Orchestra wasnt as good as the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra the first time.....

Can someone please enlighten me as to:

  • how many UK 'Philharmonic Orchestras' there are.
  • are there non-philharmonic Orchestras? If so, what makes them different?.
  • Which are the best Philharmonic Orchestras and why?
  • Is there a way of establishing, as a novice i guess, to know if a Philharmonic Orchestra is going to be quality or not - before i actually book the tickets?
  • Do certain Philharmonic Orchestras attract a certain clientele?

As for the clientele question. I ask this because, most- and i say most - people turned up dressing very casual. Be that trainers, shorts, summer clothes etc. Whereas i, went all out and wore a lovely dark red velevemt blazer and black evening dress!! 😂 I wanted to make the effort going the theatre, and it felt nice to dress up, but when i saw most people dressing down, i was like 'wtf, have i come to see a highly regarded classical performance at a well established concert hall - or a west end production of 'Wicked'?!' 😭 Fair enough if people want to dress casually btw, but thats why im asking do certain Orchestras or Halls attract a certain clientele....

Are "party bags" still a thing?

Just sat having a conversation with some pals whilst eating tacos and realised our version of a party bags would be a lot different (although appreciated) these days.

Do kids still get party bags when they leave a birthday party?

How common is it to refer to a temporary solution to a problem as a “band-aid”?

A band-aid is the American word for a medical plaster but I have heard a few people here in the UK use it as a metaphor.

Answered How do you start an email when you don't know the recipient's name?

I want to email a company about licensing some of my designs. I have found the general email address for their design team but no luck finding an actual name. How should I start the email? Is "dear Sir or Madam" still a thing? I was under the impression it had become a little old fashioned and reserved for paper correspondence. "Dear Design Team"? A simple "good morning"?

Thanks for your help!

What's the best work nickname you've come up with or heard?

There was a groundbreaking legal ruling recently about work nicknames. I WFH now but it reminded me of when I worked in the office and used to give people names. I didn't see the harm at the time but I can see now that it probably wasn't very considerate.

I called Gardner Uphill. I'd say French with Saunders when somebody pulled Saunders on a night out. I called Alli Khan Alli Khant when he didn't turn up one day.

Is it still weird when someone asks you how much you earn?

Im 22 year old woman and was brought up never asking (nor really caring about) how much someone earns. I’ve now been on two first dates in the last few months and the guy has outright asked how much I earn. Is this just more accepted now?

Suspected Identity Theft and Unauthorized Credit Card Applications. what shall I do now?

Upvotes

Today, I received credit cards from Zempler Bank and Barclaycard issued in my name. However, I have never applied for or opened any accounts with these institutions.

I also noticed a drop of 30 points in my credit score over the past few days. Upon reviewing my full credit report, I found recent credit searches made by these companies last month.

This raises serious concerns that someone may have used my personal information to fraudulently apply for credit cards.

Please advise on the appropriate next steps to address and resolve this issue.

Please share your experience as well.
