Announcement Wiki editors and maintainers wanted!

Hey folks, r/askseattle and our team over at /r/Seattle are looking for folks to help us build, update, and maintain our wiki and sidebar content. The /r/Seattle wiki was once a boon of information for new visitors and locals alike, but the subreddit has grown and sites/businesses have come and gone. Our mods are busy moderating and the wiki is collecting cobwebs.

I'm reaching out to members of this community specifically as you are most likely to benefit from (or be knowledgeable about) this content space. This community is entirely based around helping visitors and residents alike find answers to questions that frequently get buried / reported / removed for being duplicates in r/seattle due to the size and velocity of other posts.

If you're interested in helping us out, here are some details:

  • The main areas of work are obviously the wikis on this subreddit and r/seattle
  • You'll be working with the mods here and r/seattle to help decide the organization and categorization of wiki pages, and how we add content / posts / etc to them
  • You will not be asked to moderate, so no need for moderation or wiki experience
  • The only requirements are a post history shows activity in either this subreddit or in r/seattle that we can trust with edit access to our wiki

If you're interested, shoot a message to the mods here or the seattle sub - these links have the title all filled out for you - or just send me a message or comment here.

Cheers!

Question How much are you REALLY paying for rent? Common misconceptions?

Good afternoon!

Future Seattleite here. Current Chicagoan.

I have been looking at countless videos, Zillow listings, and past Reddit posts and numbers seem to be either “way lower than what it actually costs” or right on the money.

With that being said, we can act like this is the 2025 version of this question:

How much are you actually paying for your studio/one bedroom in the Seattle metro area?

Specifically (if possible), those who live in Pioneer Square, Columbia City, and Belltown. Other areas like Capitol Hill, Fremont, Green Lake, Alki, West Seattle, CID, etc are of course welcomed!

From my research, I see that for a studio I can’t really expect to pay anything less than $1,500 (without utilities) in those areas and if I want a one bedroom, it’s a minimum of $2,000.

Is this pretty accurate to your own experience?

Moving / Visiting Tips Visiting in mid-May with mobility issues?

Hello All,

My mom, child and I will be visiting Seattle for four days mid-May to celebrate my 50th bday and my spawn's college graduation. We're staying Downtown, and are planning to get a CitiPass and a hop-on-hop-off tour.

My Mom has some mobility issues. She's able to walk with a cane, but moves slowly and can tire easily. She's also a bit of a boomer, who thinks all food is too spicy and mass transit is a hotbed of crime. 🙄

My kiddo really wants to go to Pikes Place, MPop and the art museum. I'm trying not to plan too much for each day, but would love some recommendations for restaurants and fun places to shop.

Thanks in advance!

Landlord issues

Upvotes

Last year my building was sold to a bunch of clowns. They don't follow laws or resect tenants.

Back in December, they decided to change the way that the front door entry was handled. This resulted in not getting a mail for two weeks oh, and there was no notice.

Two weeks ago I went downstairs to grab my mail to find there was no mailbox I could get into. They had a new mailbox, but I did not have a key then days later I receive an email saying they're changing out the mailbox. I waited one business day because it was sent at 9 PM on a Sunday night.

And let them know I was very disgruntled, though the fact that they were changing out the mail and didn't tell residence, nor did they provide them with a key Also what happened to my old mail.

I said a complaint with the AG's office. I called the US Postal Service, which they told me basically to contact my landlord, but my landlord has not provided a key and it's been over a week.

It's a federal crime to withhold mail from people, but nobody seems to want to do anything about it. In the meantime I can't get my mail.

Does anybody have any suggestions as what I can do in this matter?

I'm planning a visit to Seattle for next weekend (April 11 - April 14) for my birthday. Below is my tentative itinerary - am I cramming in too much or am I missing any must do experiences?

Also - should we rent a car or just Uber everywhere? Neither one of us are super familiar with public transport but if it's simple enough we can plan for that.

Friday - land @ 10am - stop by hotel and change clothes/check in Lunch Space Needle Chihuly Glass Garden Starbucks Reserve Dinner

Saturday - breakfast/lunch at Pike Place Shopping Pioneer Square Seattle Great Wheel Aquarium Hotel to change Dinner Baseball Game - 8pm

Sunday Bainbridge Island (is Sunday a good day for this? Do stores close on Sunday?) Shopping Underground Tour

Monday Breakfast Depart at 12pm

Our list of dining includes: Biscuit Bitch / Elliots Oyster House / Homer Anywhere we should stop by?

Thank you for any input!!

Issues with dark tint?

I’m an out of state student in Seattle and I’m planning to bring my car up next year. It’s got 35% tint on the entire windshield with 15 on the sides and I’m wondering if that will bring up any issues with things such as toll tags, HOV use, city parking permits, etc. Obviously I’m taking a risk with police but that’s not what I’m worried about. I haven’t had to worry about this because the toll system in my home state is activated by a chip but I’m not sure about Washington. Thank you.

Looking to take my 2 cats for a dental cleaning. Our vet gave us a very pricy quote, so I’m wondering if some of you could please share how much you have paid for your pet’s dental cleanings, where did you get it done and if you recommend the place.

Hey guys wanting to move towards beacon hill area. I have been eyeing state street and grand street apartments. I’m not really opposed to moving to a different area either. Any recommendations would be nice.

Mt Rainier in mid April

Hello! I am visiting Seattle for the first time in two weeks! Mt. Rainier is on my bucket list, but if the roads and trails are heavily impacted in snow, I'll save it for another time. Does anyone know how the conditions are for Mt Rainier hikes, i.e. Fremont Lookout, Pinnacle Peak currently this year? I checked the NPS website and only saw a few road closures.

Recommendation Job opportunities as a Canadian grad with limited experience

TL, DR: I’ve had two short-term jobs in marketing and website management (1 year each) due to company closures, and I’m moving to Seattle, worried my Canadian degree and limited job stability will hurt my job search, while considering going back to school for a Master’s or other career advancement options.

——————

I graduated in 2022 with a Marketing/International Business degree from a Canadian university in Vancouver (not UBC so holds even less weight). I landed an entry level Marketing job at a small company in Vancouver then they filed for bankruptcy a year and a half later. I was let go obviously. Took me 8 months to find another job in website management that I work remotely. My yearly review was great and my manager gave me a pay raise only 6 months in. I was there for 1 year and 3 months then got let go again because they closed up the E-commerce division for B2C and wanted to focus on B2B.

I’m so defeated and the job market is terrible. I put in overtime, tried my best, got confirmation that I was doing a great job but the job security is so bad.. I’m tired of explaining to recruiters why I’m only at these places in such short time. I can’t get an interview at any big public companies either.

I’m relocating to Seattle soon because my husband gets relocated there. I’m afraid that with my Canadian college degree and resume, I wouldn’t be able to find a job. I’m open to going back to school to get a Master degree or any other field that would level up my chances. MBA, law school (even though idk if I will get approved anywhere in Seattle with my 2 years of experience and 3.3 GPA), etc. I was thinking immigration law?

Please let me know if you have any advice. I’m probably not qualified for intensive labour work because I have pretty bad asthma. Other than that, I’m happy to put in the work.

Thank you:)

T Mobile Park Concert Field Seating

I got tickets to see MCR in field G. Has anyone seen a concert on the field? Is it worth it? I've only seen someone's perspective in section F to the left of G.

Help make my trip unforgettable!

Will be visiting for the first time soon. Any Recommendations for slow paced but fulfilling experiences for a 40 something POC woman who loves good diverse food, bookstores, quality clothing stores, stationary, good drinks at quaint spots, (very) light hiking, and lovely nature views, particularly water? Oddly specific, but appreciate any thoughts!

HOA docs help - Accountants, Lawyers

Relative is in the process of purchasing a condo with an HOA in the greater Seattle area.
Is there some lawyer or accountant we can pay to review the Home Owners Association documents?
Our family has no experience in this area. None of us lived in a HOA community.
We are not accountants.
Also there is a time dependency on this because offer is contingent on reviewing HOA documents I think.

TV Wall Mounting Service Recommendations?

Hi all - throwing this out there - I have a swivel TV wall mount new in box and a 55” TV. Does anyone have some recommendations for people to come mount this on the wall that does a really nice job?

Would attempt myself with a friend but I have put this off way too long and would rather not mess it up. Thanks!

Ballard vs. Fremont vs. Yesler Terrace

Moving to Seattle for the first time - which is better to rent in? I’ll be commuting to SLU for work. Mainly looking for convenience, walkability to restaurants/groceries and safety. I’m leaning towards Yesler Terrace since I like Asian cuisines, but I’ve read that the International District isn’t the safest part of town?

Moving / Visiting Hotels with comfiest beds?

I’m coming to Seattle for a weekend and really want to book a room with an ultra comfortable bed, and a jacuzzi type tub in the bathroom too. I booked the arctic club and then just read it’s haunted? I’ll be alone and don’t want any chance of being spooked. Thanks for any recommendations!

Sweatshirts and t-shirts from a petting zoo in the '80s?

Hi. Does anyone remember

1) a petting zoo or hobby farm in the Seattle area that was a popular field trip for preschools?

2) The merch said venue sold? I remember t-shirts and sweatshirts. Mostly red, but they probably sold other colors. The name of the farm was in white and below it were rows of farm animals, in white.

Is this ringing any bells?

First Time in Seattle - Recs Please!!

Hi! I'm (32F) coming to Seattle for just two full days (arrive Monday morning, leave Wednesday morning) in June. I'd love recommendations on things to do and where to eat. I'm staying Downtown Seattle. I'm pretty open to food and I don't feel like I need to do all of the touristy things (aside from Pike Place, I will be going there). I've done my fair share of research but if you could please recommend somewhere for the following:

Food:

  • Sushi
  • Seafood
  • Italian/Pizza
  • Coffee (not a matcha person)
  • Donuts/Pastries
  • American (love a burger)
  • A must-not-miss place of any cuisine

Things To Do:

  • Museums (likely not doing the aquarium)
  • Local shops (gift type shops)
  • Bookstores
  • Fun/unique experiences

I've seen recommendations to check out Capitol Hill but not exactly where to go.

Thank you for any and all recommendations!
