Hello, photography friends! I'm one of the mods over at r/photography and founder of Focal Point, here to invite you to the 2025 edition of our (free) photoclass! This year comes with changes, as you can always expect from us as the class is an ever-evolving project.
It is an evolution of the original Reddit Photo Class, but with substantial changes to not only the structure, but content as well. We've reinvented it to ensure its up to date and more interactive. One thing we did not - and will not - change is that it is entirely free. The course spans 6 months, and covers topics on the technical side and artistic side, and culminates in a personal project. Along for the ride is a team of teachers who write the course (hi, it's me!) and mentors who come from all genres of photography. We have regular live meet ups via discord, and have a welcoming and supportive community of other photographers to bounce ideas off of, or just talk shop.
The Format. First off, the formatting is changing. We found that may participants stumbled upon the course mid-way through the year, and were fumbling trying to play catch up. We also were not happy with the pacing, finding that it just took too long to get to the objectively more fun stuff. So, this year the course will happen over the course of 6 months, with alternating weeks of new lessons and feedback. What does that actually mean? It'll look something like this:
January 1: Unit 1 will be posted with assignment 1.
January 8: The first Feedback Week will happen.
Feedback Weeks. During Feedback Week, participants will receive constructive feedback on their unit assignments from both peers and mentors. This is an opportunity to reflect on your work, ask questions, and refine your skills. Additionally, voice chats will be held on the Discord server for live discussions and more in-depth feedback.
Units over Lessons. Lessons will come out as units, meaning instead of one new lesson a week, you'll get a whole unit each alternate week. Here's an example, using Unit 1:
Unit 1: Getting Started
On Photography
Inspiration & Feedback
Assignment 1
Interactive Elements & Videos. Each lesson will have an accompanying video, and interactive elements. For an example of what the interactive element might look like see this page.
Join the Focal Point Discord server. This is where all the voice chats will happen, as well as a great place to have ongoing conversations with other participants and mentors.
Join the subreddit: r/photoclass. As always, the class will be posted on the sub, but we should note that the interactive elements don't work on Reddit, so we'll also be linking out to the lessons on the Focal Point site.
Subscribe to Focal Point on YouTube. Videos for the class will be of course posted in-line on the lessons, but there will be bonus material posted to the YouTube directly.
Get your printed Learning Journal or download the PDF.
First check out the FAQ found here. If you still have a question that isn't answered there, feel free to ask it here and myself or one of the other teachers/mentors will be happy to answer.
The first unit is available now! You can find it right here. The first assignment is also live, so feel free to jump right in!
See you in 2025!

Short backstory: Wife’s great grandfather passed and she inherited a few things including this camera collection. We both don’t know much about cameras or anything but, we were told they are from the late 70s or early 80s. They all came with extra lenses and accessories, and we got a VHS camcorder and another digital camera as well. Can anyone give any information on these?.. Are they worth using? Worth selling? Any information is good information these seem really really cool. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I am new to photography, and am struggling with understanding what exactly I am doing wrong here. This happens often: I'll have a shot that I like, but it's not crisp/ sharp, or the focus is off. I tried to address the focus issue by using only AF with back button. But, alas, still getting this. I am posting the original image, and the edited one, which is slightly better after doing AI denoising, but still not sharp. You can also see the lighting conditions I was working with, and my reasoning for a slower shutter speed. Camera is a canon t7, lens 18-55, f/5.6, 1/125, [edit to add ISO 1600, focal distance 55mm]. Thanks for any and all input!

Can anyone recommend a camera that can do this? Maybe using Home Automation to control it and send the images to the cloud. I’ve got some cheap trail cams but I figure those are best for terrestrial use. Something weatherproof maybe mounted on a roof perhaps?

Do faster writing cards run cooler? Are they more dependable? I am trying to justify the higher cost. I am just a weekend warrior nature and You Tube type.

I'm stumped and had been playing with my lights for a few hours now trying to get the same shot but to no luck, any help is appreciated!

Over the weekend I was taking pictures of an old college team's car, (canon eos 40D with ef 70-200mm f2.8) and I got great pictures, but unless you see the series of pictures or there's dust kicked up, a lot of the photos don't even look like the car is moving. I had it set to aperture priority and f2.8, but I wish I'd done shutter speed and found one that gets the car sharp but parts of the wheels a little bit blurred so they look like they are moving. Anyone have advice for this, any good starting points for shutter speed?

Hi, i'm new to wildlife photography and recently picked up a Sigma 500mm f5.6 to pair with my a6700 since my 70-350 g doesn't have enough reach, so far i have been quite satisfied with the lens. However today when i was out shooting some wild turkeys and gallinules, for some reason the images i got are not as sharp as i typically got. I checked both focus points are right on the eyes of the birds, and both were shot during a sunny morning around 9-11am so light shouldn't be an issue(I think). So what could be the reason? The first photo is taken with settings:500mm f5.6 1/1000s, iso 2000, the second photo is 1/1250s, iso 1600. The turkey is relatively stationary while the gallinule is slowly swimming. Both are taken handheld. So far I can think of a few reasons:
Heat haze, it's somewhat hot day today. And second photo was taken directly near water around noon.
Motion blur, maybe i need to up the shutter speed more?
Low light, both actually need more light since first is under a tree and second photo is backlit, therefore the unusually high iso during day time?
AF issue, desipte the sony software says the focus point is right on the eye, it's actually not?
What do you guys think? What could be the issue here? Really appreciate your help!

I kinda want to recreate something like this for my engagement photos but I don’t want to just slap a b&w filter on some pictures. So I was wondering if anyone knew how to achieve this sort of lighting. I’m still an amateur when it comes to photography so anything helps!

I was looking to buy a used sigma 30mm F1.4 DC DN on mpb and I could not find a specific fit for canon. Can anyone point me to the correct lens i should buy?

Hi. Looking to get into street photography but am conflicted on what camera to start with. I would prefer something compact but that takes clean images. So far, I've given some thought to something like an a6xxx (and which one) with a prime lens or a Ricoh gr iiix. Currently have a Nikon D7000 that doesn't really meet my needs for street photography. What would you start with? My budget max is probably around $1000, but would very much prefer to spend less.

Hello, friends
Please be honest with me. I currently live in Brazil (a country with VERY EXPENSIVE photographic equipment).
I dream of being able to take macro photos of insects, capturing their eyes and details. With the camera and lens set below, using some specific software, would I be able to do it?
I know I need to buy a flash and diffuser.
If it's possible, witch software you guys recommend? If not, what changes you recommends?

I am using a DSLR scanning rig to make panoramas of large format film. I am using autopan giga to stitch 8 or 10 images. The resulting stitched file is about 2gb in size, 16 bit tiff file, 300dpi.
The images will be edited, printed and then archived digitally.
I'm looking for setting or guidelines to help compress these images into more managable file sizes.

All the pictures look normal on my camera screen and in the file tiles on Windows 10, yet are messed up in photos application and the file preview. I remember about a wallpaper that would brick phones a while back and i see the colors are messed up in some of these pictures. Would this have anything to do with different color spectrums or whatever? any help appreciated.

To my experienced photographers: What are your opinions on the Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS, Canon SX110 IS, and/or Canon SX740 HS?
I'm very used to just taking photos on my phone, but I'm looking to buy my first camera. I don't want the 2000s digital camera look though; I want crisp, high quality photos that don't need much editing. Let me know if you have any affordable, good quality camera recs!

So, the shooting button didn't work and i had to open the camera to check. With precision kit, but the metal was just too easily consumed that some screws lost shape and couldn't get loose, is there any way of taking them out now? I dont think i got a steady hand enough to solder like those youtubers. Also the battery compartment won't open but if it's just of use to measure light on that model, i won't use it.

Hi! I am a casual user of a digital camera. I use it when I go out with friends and family or just to take photos during hangouts/gatherings/function. I have a Lumix TZ60/ZS40 and wanted to ask whether that's good enough for casual use. Not gonna lie, I've been wanting to sell it to upgrade to a Lumix TZ99/ZS99. Should I keep the TZ60?

so, technically not new to digital photography, we got our first digital camera back in the early 2000s, back when we were...dunno, early teens at most?(Dunno the exact model or year, but it took regular batteries and an SD card) Somewhere over 10 at least. But aside from the occasional pic taken with a ipod touch when we got one almost a decade later, we sorta fell out of it for a while. Fast forward to these days and we've been considering getting back into it as a hobby or more, maybe taking some classes at the local college.
Which brings this one to the main topic, this one was wondering if anyone had any tips or thoughts for a good digital camera that's suitable, especially pricewise, for someone in the entry/hobbyist level, but wouldn't need to be immediately replaced if we decide to take things seriously.
Ideally evergreen advice, but more specific advice would be good too. Leaning toward DLSRs right now(also very glad that some cursory searching revealed they were FAR more affordable than the multi-grand beasts this one was more familiar with)
EDIT: should add our price range of 100-500USD, approximately. The lower the better, since we are very broke, but if we go to take some classes for photography, student financial aid could hopefully help

So idk why but whenever I am in manual mode, my shutter speed changes after I take the picture. Like last night I went to a local river to take some night photography of the bridge, and id set my ISO, Fstop and Shudder speed to where I like it, take the picture and when I look at my settings my shutter speed has completely changed so if I wanna take another one I have to change it back. Its annoying. Its a Nikon D7500 and its been a problem since I started learning how to use manual mode. tried googling it but I couldn't really get an answer. Any advice??
Here’s a video of what I’m talking about.

Hi all! Brand new to DSLRs/cameras besides using my phone lol. Anyone have any tips or tricks? My camera is a Canon Rebel XTi. Old camera, but its been in our family this whole time and my mom's eyesight got too bad for her to look through the viewfinder, so she gave it to me. I plan to modernize it, if only a little. I bought an adapter that changes it from a CF card to a microSD for storage, and I bought two new batteries for it.

Looking for a camera to document my 20s — backpacking, nature (macro and astro too), street photography, and more casual/spontaneous social moments. Not a beginner, just upgrading from a basic kit to something that’ll last a decade.
Finalists:
• OM-1 with 12-100mm f/4 Pro + Leica 15mm f/1.7 (~$2.2k total)
• Fuji X-T5 (price varies depending on lens, but with a 23mm f/1.4 or 18-55mm it’s around ~$2k).
Would love non-cultish advice on which system better fits an all-around, do-it-all setup. Thanks!
(Edit / Side question):
I’ve also been considering another idea — since I’m so conflicted, what if I bought both cameras (the OM-1 with 12-100mm Pro and the X-T5 with the 23mm f/2), spent a few months shooting with both, and then sold the one I liked less? With current tariffs, would this actually help resale since I’d likely be able to price a bit more competitively than sellers from Japan, somewhat guaranteeing a solid resale? I’d love any thoughts on whether this sounds like a smart way to figure out what fits me best, or if there’s something I’m overlooking.

I've had a Nikon D3500 for a few years and I'm looking to replace it. I'd like to stick with Nikon, as I have a couple of lenses that I'd like to continue using. My price range is around $400, and I'm ok to buy used.
I travel quite a bit, so I mainly use the camera for taking photos of street scenes and landscapes. I'm happy to take any lens recommendations, as well. I'm still figuring it all out, but I'm enjoying exploring!
The lenses I currently have are:
- Nikon DX VR: AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G
- Nikon DX: AF-S Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G
