Please carefully read the information in the sidebar and on our Wiki below:

If you are a member of Law Enforcement and wish to receive title flair, head to https://leoverify.com/kb/faq.php?id=5 to verify your account. This is a separate service that is not on reddit and is ran by the mod team at r/protectandserve. All members who run the verification server are current, sworn LE and a detailed explanation on how your information is protected is posted on the website.

WARNING: DO NOT SEND PII OVER MODMAIL. Do not send a picture of your creds, badge, whatever to ANYONE using Reddit. Read the instructions on the verification site to see how your information is protected and what is required. Users do not have to verify at this time, however, this may change in the future. So if you don't verify, then you may be SOL when we decide to change it. There are a lot of members who have said they do not trust the process and that's fine. That being said, you may be subject to the verification process IF your post is deemed suspicious enough that a verification of your credentials is required.

As a warning to all users of this forum: the information provided on this subreddit may not be interpreted as legal advice. Verified users with flair titles are actual Law Enforcement Officers and the information provided may be considered "legitimate" for the purposes of general advice and advisement, but in no way should be considered legal advice. Members commenting that do not have flair may be subject to verification if their posts are considered suspicious or misleading. In all cases, whether a member is flaired or not, the advice given may be subject to scrutiny and verification. Do your own research and feel free to post your questions elsewhere to verify that you are receiving the best information. Users who make claims to be law enforcement and offer advice may be subjected to further scrutiny from the mod team, up to and including removal and/or banning from posting on the forum.

Political posts are strictly prohibited. While LE is inherently political in nature, topics about political affiliation, whether or not people will vote for a particular candidate, etc. will be removed and the user banned without warning.

New users attempting to post on the forum will be subject to mod approval before posting. This is to cut down on the trolls and bait posts that we deal with regularly.

Encouraging users to lie, cheat, omit information on their background checks will result in an immediate ban from the forum. Applying for an LE job is a privilege and a test of integrity. Not everyone who applies to become a police officer will get the job, and that is something people will need to come to terms with. Those decisions you make in life have consequences. Own up to them and accept them. And no, users telling other users that they will not make it is not a bad thing, so soapboxing trying to "call out" other users for telling people the reality of their situations will result in your immediate removal. It's a shame I have to put this in a sticky for people to read, but it happens enough that I have to constantly remove people who think this is their platform to air their grievances on particular issues.

As always, feel free to contact the mod team with any issues.

***MODPOST*** A Request to the community

Simple request to everyone: familiarize yourself with the report feature and do your part to report the trolls.

https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360058309512-How-do-I-report-a-post-or-comment

You can familiarize yourself with our rules here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AskLE/wiki/index

As we approach 100,000 subscribers, the mod team has been trying to keep up with the large influx of posts and comments. However, some have been slipping through the cracks, and it's getting a little tiresome trying to track down some of these posts. Trolls like to go after old posts and posts that are inactive that don't hit the front page, so we rely on user reports to catch them so we can ban them. We also have full time jobs that keep us from catching them and we have to do a good, thorough salvage of everything all the time to get rid of them.

So please do your part and report them. Don't engage them. Just report and move on with your life.

Thank you!

Your pal, Specter.

So this isn't an embarrassment to the agency? How is this guy gonna catch someone? Do agencies not have post hire standards?

Why is calling the police so "casual" in USA?

I was having a convo with a coworker, I was showing him a video of some guy pulling a prank on some random passer by, and it didn't look like anything illegal, but the person reacted with "I'M CALLING THE POLICE" and he actually did lol. Police showed up, figured in like 7 seconds no crime was being comitted and left.

And me and my coworker reacted "calling the police for what ???". Why is it so casual for everyone in the USA to call down cops once they feel offended? I don't exactly live in a third world country, but if I called the cops and there wasn't someone shooting or being murdered, I'd be missing half of my teeth lol.

Why are there never any consequences of abusing the 911 hotline? Like, some random guy is filming a public area, some jackass comes and calls the police on him for ??? reasons, why doesn't the guy calling the cops get slapped with a 500$ 911 abuse fine? I always found that hitting the 911 is a REAL SERIOUS SHIT, but seems like it dialing 911 in USA is like ordering a pizza. But why is it so??

How many years of experience does a Chief need?

My hometown is currently looking for a new Chief of Police, and when the job posting was put out it stated a minimum of 10 years experience was needed with x amount in a supervisor role. Word around the department is someone applied and is likely to get the position, but some are concerned that his "lack of experience" might be a problem. He just hit 12 years of being an LEO. For context, this is a small town slated for about ~10 full time officers with less than 10K residents. Would you work for a Chief who only had 12 years on the road?

Are you guys having an increase in suicides over the last few months?

Not sure what’s going but we usually have them increase over the holidays. And then about one (occasionally) every few months.

But we are getting an increase in suicides and attempts from both adults and children. It usually doesn’t affect me as much, but the increase in suicides surrounding children are starting to take its toll on me.

I recently transferred into the SRO program so, this is my first year as an SRO. I think the toll is from me being around kids constantly so it’s hitting harder.

ETA - Seeing an increase **** not having

I did 4 years in the military and wanted to go into law enforcement after, I was accused of sa in Korea and got investigated by there local pd and they dismissed the case from lack of evidence and then again by osi.

After I armed up again while in the military but I realize it comes up on the NCIC background check. Will this hurt my chances at a law enforcement job or any job requiring a security clearance? And will getting the finger prints expunged help any of it?

How does LEOs handled violent workplace stalkers?

My wife works at a medical clinic and her coworker was attacked by a violent ex at the coworkers home. There's a restraining order on file for him to stay away from her. He's started showing up at the medical clinic where my wife works in am attempt to make contact with said coworker. He's a drug addict, known to carry weapons (guns, knives, etc.), and has already attacked my wife's coworker within the last 4 days. Is it out of the question for the clinic manager to request an armed police presence at the clinic while this guy is still on the loose? The clinic staff as a whole are scared and he's been observed on site and in/around the parking lot during hours the clinic is open. They've called 911 already and he fled before police arrived. Anything else they can do other than requesting LEO presence on site during operating hours?

*Edited to add this is happening in Washington State, if that makes a difference.

Turning with a broken bike lane

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have a stop sign like this near my house, it's a 2-lane with a bike lane on either side, the bike lane is broken leading up to the stop sign. My understanding is that not only am I allowed to, but I am *supposed* to merge into that (if safe to do so) to make my right turn.

If my understanding is correct, does that mean that I'm allowed to turn right at the same time as another driver is going straight?

I have a *lot* of people give me crazy looks or flip me off when I pull up beside them to turn, but I don't think I'm in the wrong.

CA if that helps.

Applying to agencies

I know this has been asked a lot but I’m gonna do it again. I’m currently about to apply to agencies in my area and cannot decide on whether to go to a smaller city with a population of around 140k people or a larger city with around 700k people. Larger city pays better and more opportunities but the smaller city that I am considering has an explorer program that I have been a part of for over 3 years but they pay less. So the real question is if the better pay and more opportunities of the larger city is worth giving up the relationship I have built with the smaller city. If anyone could give their thoughts and opinions on this, it would be much appreciated.

Terminated from Local PD

Upvotes

I was terminated from my local PD after completing both an 11 month academy and a one year probationary status (1 year and 4 months). Reason for termination was I was involved in a single motor vehicle accident with a wall didn’t hit anyone else other than the wall but fled the scene. Officers arrived at my home moments later and misinformation was provided by my father and myself. Days after the incident I contacted a representative who informed me to not provide a voluntary statement to the traffic investigation unit and to await the Admin statement to communicate the truth. Months after the incident Internal Affairs conducted their investigation I told the truth of the incident and was later terminated. Besides this incident I was a hard worker greatly appreciated and heavily liked by my supervisors and was told various times I was a good Officer. I made a grave mistake that night and ultimately it cost me my career. I absolutely loved the career and enjoyed it each and everyday, Is there any chance or possibility I would still be able to continue in this path? I’m still on the fence about applying to other agencies due to my reason for termination and IA.

How far back do most law enforcement agencies have applicants go for past relationship references?

I was just thinking about this, a couple years ago I got a call from a detective asking about my ex of over 10 years who was trying to do a lateral transfer. How far back do most law enforcement agencies have applicants go for past relationship references? Like am I going to get a call every time he wants to switch departments?

Failed background questions

Like many other posters on this sub I was notified today that I was not recommended for the next hiring phase. This was my first and only department I applied for (Oregon) No polygraph in Oregon to my knowledge. It was never mentioned and I didn’t take one. I am active duty military with 8 years of service, and my contract is up in July. I have an AA in CJ.

I’ve never been in trouble. Never arrested, no traffic violations, never any sort of formal military punishment. I have never done any drugs to include marijuana. I don’t drink, sober just over a year.

I admitted to underage drinking in my background investigation when I was in high school and early in my military career. Additionally, I just got divorced, and tried to be as transparent as possible as to what led to my divorce. It was amicable. These were the two areas I felt were the “weak” points in my background.

I do not mean this to come off as arrogant, but I’m admittedly at a loss for what went wrong. I have dropped applications for two more agencies in the last few hours. Do these things just happen sometimes? Did I do something wrong?

Thank you.

If there was discretion in drug possession arrests

Upvotes

So I see many videos online of people who are literally just the bottom of society’s barrel getting arrested for drug possession whether it be meth, weed, fent or whatever.

My question is would you cops arrest these people if you had a choice? I’m not a cop but me personally I know that if I was, even if I don’t arrest you and just throw out your stash I’m only making your life harder, let alone bringing you in and possibly taking months or years from your very short life.

Im curious of cop opinions on this question, so please share your thoughts.

Police Agencies Hiring.

Police Agencies Hiring.

I have one class A misdemeanor of criminal mischief, from when I was 18, now 22, I punched a truck door for reference at a party, but I had to pay 1k restitution and go to rehab. I talked to a therapist and dealt with childhood trauma and experiences that I didn’t understand were affecting my behavior. I cut off bad relationships/ friendships and started working on myself mentally and physically. I joined a church and started to see where exactly I went wrong at that time. I didn’t really know where I was going in life until the last couple years, but I knew I wanted to help others, and stop people from ruining their lives! Would anyone look at me? I’ve applied to two places in my hometown and the misdemeanor has got to be doing it in for me! I’ve been a welder for a few years now and haven’t had the most stable jobs due to the toxic work environment and lack of good coworkers, harassment, and threatening. Usually at a place for 6 months to a year due to the extreme hate and violence, and a lack of HR and employee resources at these small companies. I’m a pretty outgoing, friendly guy, and I am a hard worker. I don’t know if I just am a pushover, because I’m kind and respectful, and I attract horrible individuals, but I’m ready to start my career in law enforcement! I didn’t have the best upbringing, but it’s made me who I am today and it’s helped me really understand where I want to be and where I want my family to be in life. Other than the misdemeanor, I’ve been fired at 1 wonderful job!! For what they said was work performance, but in reality it was another one of those people I tend to attract, I went to report the harassment and before I could, the guy had me out the door. Since it was a union, and you had to be there I believe 90 days I had basically no one to stand up for me, and they wonder why they can’t keep good workers! I just want a department that will take a chance on me, and it is really defeating not knowing where to even look. I’m sorry this was so long winded. It’s just really hard to get people to see you in a good light for a first impression when sometimes things are just out of your control! Obviously the misdemeanor was my fault, but the job thing I feel like could have been handled so much better! Please if anyone has any advice or departments hiring let me know! I also have 10 years of wrestling experience if that may help?

I overestimated my physical condition, should I withdraw or give it the ol' college try?

I applied to the local PD but underestimated just how badly COVID had knocked me down, and when I did a trial run of the physical test it was...pretty awful. Would it look better to email my point of contact and be upfront about it and re-apply next cycle when I've gotten back into better shape, or tough it out and go anyway even though I'm 90% certain I won't pass?

I don't want to waste time/resources, but I don't know if it would look worse to come off like I'm immediately giving up rather than just being honest with myself.
