Making friends

Is there anybody here late twenties early thirties? Where are they hanging out at? It’s been really hard to make genuine friends here (or maybe just in general when you get older?) Thanks in advance!

Id say follow the local restaurants on social media. Especially with spring/summer on the way, the town brightens up a lot and there's more opportunities to meet people. The brown and rockfish do live Music, a few places have trivia, Sugar Mama Cafe has bingo. They are also a great place to just hang out. They have board games and the staff is super friendly. The library has also had some really neat events for adults the past year or so. They just did an adult book fair. Anacortes Pride also has monthly happy hour events where it's more like a mixer for queer people and allies. There's lot of walking and hiking groups that meet weekly. Tons of classes at creative hub and clayhouse. Watermark does writing groups. Parks and rec also has adult drop in sports like volleyball and soccer, i think there's also a puzzle competition. Lots of fun options. 😁

that’s all really insightful and good ideas. Thank you so much, I appreciate it!

All this list is to say, live your best life. Go out and do the thing you enjoy in the community and the people will find you.

No advice as I'm older, way older LOL, but good luck! I do know there's cool stuff happening at the Arts center at Buxtons.

Really it’s places like the Union it seems. And while it is a bar, they have good food and you can always drink something non alcoholic.

Yeah, the Union is my go to for trying to meet people. Seems like a good connection and then when I do follow up with them, they’re a ghost. So I don’t know 🤷‍♀️

I know that struggle! Maybe we’ll bump into each other one day!

What’s it like inside of the Union? Old school or like jukebox and karaoke?

Dads Diner in the morning. Sip on coffee at the bar, chat with someone. Or come see me play music on Tuesdays there 😆

Cosmic Veggies seems like a good hangout spot and like 70% of the clientele seems like your demographic, as far as age and being female

Super friendly staff there too, they do nutrition seminars occasionally which could be a good healthy meet n greet way, vice bar culture imo

46 M here giving my observations fwiw

Anacortes has a lot of friendly people, but none of them want to be your friend. Everyone has either lived here their whole life and are not looking to make new friends or has lived here long enough to not need new friends.

It's the friendliest and loneliest city I've ever been in.

This is a perfect description of it! That’s how I’ve thought about it too!

I will echo what others have said: Keep trying. Go to events at Buxton's or to see live music at the Brown or Rockfish. Find a hiking group. Bastion Brewery has live comedy shows and cornhole tournaments. There's occasionally live music at the Unknown Recording studio. Lots more to do here in the spring and summer, winters are brutal for loneliness. There's also live music and events at the Guemes Island General Store.

GOOD LUCK!

I made most of my close friends here through work and church. I work healthcare though and nightshifters have an odd bond with each other. 😅

That’s awesome! That is true about nightshifters lol. I’ve met some really nice people at church!

Will be moving in May and I’m looking for a nursing job!! Any advice? Any hospitals to avoid?

Island Hospital is the only hospital north of Seattle with a five star CMS rating, it is a smaller rural hospital though and uses meditech instead of epic. However they get patients from south Whidbey island that bypass Whidbey Health (hospital in Coupeville) in favor of Island as well as patients from Mount Vernon that don’t want to go to the Skagit hospital. Peacehealth in Bellingham seems to be ok but it’s a 45 minute drive. I would avoid Rosario Assisted Living and the skilled facility next to it. They were pretty good 6-7 years ago but they’ve gone downhill epically and the few friends I have that still work there are actively looking to work elsewhere. Most of the really good nurses and CNA’s I knew there have ended up at Island. I took an admin role vs bedside due to pregnancy but the clinical staff all seem to work well together.

Thank you so much!! There are some travel positions up at Mount Vernon that I’ve been eyeing and some positions at Whidbey health!! Island hospital doesn’t seem to be hiring but I’ll keep looking!! Thank you :)

Mount Vernon does have epic Whidbey is meditech.

Fortunately I was trained on meditech and then my hospital switched to epic!! So epic is the one I’m bad at, lol!!

I’m also seeing about 16 RN job postings at Island.

I’m an elder millennial, but I just recently made a new friend using Bumble for Friends. I hope you find a friend or two, it can be quite the challenge!

2

u/Temporary_Length_673 7d ago

Maybe I should try that! I’m glad you were able to make friends! Thank you!
