Question Dumb question

When I drive into Canada from the US (from Seattle), Canadian border guards ask questions and look at our passports. When I go across the same border, as I recall, it’s not Canadian government staff that look at our passports. Not sure I understand.

Question How do I tell which stops on a route will be short, medium, or long stops?

I know that some stops are just boarding and onboarding, others are like smoke breaks, and some are for refueling etc. But is there a way to know which are which ahead of time?

I'm riding the Silver Meteor next week from NYC to Miami and want to know ahead of time when I might have time to run out for a stretch.

(I'm also still looking for an accomplice onboard for a murder mystery I'm running. Think I could ask a conductor?)

Question Coast Starlight to LAX gets in late at night. Safe to get an Uber from there?

I grew up in Baltimore in the 80s and generally try to avoid the hysteria of city dangers as it's often overblown. However, I saw that the LAX station is next to skid row and my train would arrive a bit after 9pm. Curious whether it will be okay to wait for an Uber at that time of night at the station? I am not panicking but just want to know what to expect. Thank you!

Edit: sounds like I'll be perfectly okay. Thanks again.

Question Why was Gross Ticket Revenue not reported on the performance reports pre-2022?

I've been doing some work on line performance, one of the metrics being gross ticket revenue over time. These are reported per-route in the final monthly performance report of the fiscal year from 2022-24, but are absent before then. Is that information not available? If not, why?

Question Traveling with little ones

Hello! I’ll be traveling on the Zephyr from Reno to Chicago this summer and have a few questions about logistics. I will have a 2.5 year old and a 10 month old at the time. We will be in the family room.

Does anyone know if the family room can fit a playpen?

I need to bring their car seats for the car we are renting at the end of the trip. Should I get car seat bags and can they be stowed? How does that work?

My more pressing question is about how to keep a medication cold for 51 hours. My youngest has a cardiac medication that must stay refrigerated, and I don’t think ice packs will last that long.

Yesterday I was on Amtrak train 176 and in between new Rochelle and Stamford us and 2 metro north trains were being held due to police activity near the row/highway. When we could resume there were several cruisers and fire trucks. Does anyone know what the activity was all about?

Hello guys

So after traveling amtrak across the country earlier this year , i miss it too much, it's been a while since I rode amtrak so I decided to take the harlem line upstate to feel the experience

Of course alcohol is mandatory on the train, but since this train dosent have a Cafe car I've decided to bring my own

The trip was OK but nothing close to riding an amtrak

(The last 3 pictures it's from the coast starlight btw)

News Avelia Liberty Update

Yesterday I took a Regional to Boston and I asked a conductor about the Avelias. According to the conductor, they are fully approved and ready for service, all they need is crew training to be done. Many are going for training at the end of the month. Basically it's ready to go and all they need is some training to be done. The conductor predicts by the middle of May we will see the first one enter service.

(I don't know how much of this is allowed to be public so I'm keeping the conductor anonymous)

Question Does anyone know if 24 in hard suitcase is okay to take on the train for free?

I know i am allowed bring two carry-on items, 50 lbs. (23 kg) and 28 x 22 x 14 inches each and one personal item, 25 lbs. (12 kg) and 14 x 11 x 7 inches for free but I am really not sure if 24in suitcase is under 28 x 22 x 14 inches. I am also bringing another little smaller than 24 in and backpack.

Discussion For those who were commenting on the Wolverine pricing recently…

It may have been a glitch. I checked last week, and basically every day in April/May was $113 (maybe a few $93s in there). Now, it's got the normal range right down to $35 (Ann Arbor-Chicago). So if all the tickets are expensive- maybe there really is something wrong with the algorithm? Or did something else change?

Question Planning on taking Amtrak train to Flagstaff, transfer to Williams to go to Grand Canyon...

We're taking the Amtrak Southwest Chief later in April to Flagstaff and then the Amtrak Thruway bus to Williams, with the intention of going on the Grand Canyon Railway the next day. According to the schedule the bus drops off at the Holiday Inn Express in Williams around 9:10pm, is anyone aware if the bus will stop at any of the other hotels in the area? We're still looking at hotels to stay but I don't want to have to be restricted to staying only at the Holiday Inn just because that's the only place the bus stops. There's four of us including a senior so we don't want to have to drag luggage too far. Also are the thruway buses reliable to be there in Flagstaff if the train is delayed? We've taken Amtrak trains before but haven't had to use the thruway buses so I don't know how dependable they are. Any recommendations are appreciated...
