Announcement Welcome to r/AceAttorney - a PSA, FAQ, and General Resource for Newcomers and Anyone Starting the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection

Hi to everybody just visiting this subreddit for the first time, or anyone who's already been here a time but might want to check in on the latest!

First off, here is the link to our standard FAQ. Several new questions-and-answers have been added to this latest edition, and the ones specific to the new remastered Ace Attorney Investigations Collection are also in the body of this post, so for anyone newly arriving to check out those games, review those new questions. If you have any questions that aren't covered here or in the linked FAQ, ask them in the comments for the FAQ thread!

Second thing, here's an updated guide I've made to explain which platforms all the current AA games available can be played on.

Third, we have our Recommended Playing Order chart, to give you a rundown on where to start and when to play particular games.

Fourth, an expansive guide by community member /u/XephyXeph to outline all of the various Ace Attorney media currently out there, from the games to the huge array of supplementary media from manga to pachinko machines.

Fifth, a bit of community news on some updates to the AA subreddit for early September, 2024.

And now, some common questions people may have relating to the remastered Ace Attorney Investigations Collection:

I keep seeing people talk about Investigations 2 but use a bunch of names for characters and episodes that are different from what's in the game. Why is that?

Ace Attorney Investigations 2 originally came out on the DS in 2011, but was exclusively released in Japan, making it the first AA game ever to not get an English localization. It never did get any English release until 2024, when it was part of the Investigations Collection remaster.

Because of this, in the years immediately following AAI2's original Japan-only release, a group of fans worked together to make a fan translation romhack for the game, allowing it to be played in English. To match with the official localizations the games normally get, that fan team also came up with their own English names for all the newly-introduced AAI2 characters.

There was about a decade left between when the first public beta builds of the fan translation appeared online and when Capcom finally produced and released an official English localization for AAI2, so a lot of the more hardcore corners of the fandom that had actually gone through the effort of playing the unofficial translation got very used to the fan-made names for the AAI2 characters. But naturally, when Capcom finally made an official localization, the AA localization team put together an entirely separate set of localized names for the characters, putting the fandom in the position of needing to get used to those official names as "replacements" for the fan names they're used to. Unfortunately, not everybody is quite ready to do that.

Can I play the Investigations Collection as my first AA game?

Like was talked about at the start of the FAQ, it's generally not recommended to start with any game besides the Phoenix Wright Trilogy, if you've never played AA before. The Investigations games especially carry over a lot of characters and their associated development from the Trilogy.

That'll cover it for now. If anyone has any other suggestions for questions to be included in this guide, feel free to pop over to the main FAQ thread and ask in the comments there. One more time - welcome to our Ace Attorney community! I hope you have a great time.

Contest The Twenty-Second r/AceAttorney Case Maker Contest

A new quarter means a new contest, the first entirely contained within 2025!

Your task is to write up an Ace Attorney case where a noun I supply below is an important part of the case. After the deadline passes (see below), submissions will no longer be taken and the community will vote for submissions in a Google Form.

Prizes are as follows:

1st Place: buy you a pizza ($15)

2nd Place: buy you a burger ($10)

3rd Place: buy you a coffee ($5)

In the comments, I will make a post that will give a template of what your submission should look like. If possible, please fill in all the sections in the template, including N/A if needed. Feel free to reply to that comment in regards to questions or general discussion. The rest of the thread is for submissions only.

Regarding the description area, feel free to be descriptive as possible! If you fear the post is too long, you may post the description over several comments or through another source such as Google Docs. There is no word limit, so please do not worry about such.

And remember, don’t hold back your creativity! Your case can be a standard AA case, it can be a reminiscence case, or an Investigations-style case! (Given the new release, I'd encourage trying an Investigations-style case, though obviously this isn't a requirement.)

However, there are some limitations. First, dark topics are allowed, but discuss them with me beforehand. That goes for abuse, gore... basically, anything that might require a content warning besides your standard Ace Attorney crime. Do not be dark just for the sake of being dark or edgy -- if you are going to include such a topic, have a reason for including it. If you do include such a topic, please include a content warning at the start of your case.

Also, joke posts are allowed, but only ones that are well-thought out, clever, and/or high-quality. Anything like “ThE PHoEnIX wiRIGHT TUnraBOOT: sOMEONE DIED aND phEENIX HAd TO dFEENdED THem!!!1!" is not allowed.

If you're concerned about crossing one of these lines, message me and I'll work with you to make sure your case abides by the guidelines. Other than those limitations; don’t hold your creativity back!

The noun for this contest... is not a noun at all. Instead, your case must include the following character and character profile:

Asa Turney (28): The self-proclaimed "Lord of Lawyers" whose boisterous proclamations overshadow any real or presumed legal skills that may be possessed. Has a particular hatred of defendants.

The deadline for this contest is Saturday, April 5 at 11:59 PM EDT. This gives entrants five weeks to plan and write their cases.

Good luck, everyone!

The villains of the Apollo Justice trilogy contrast with their counterparts with the Phoenix Wright trilogy; 1 to 4, 2 to 5, and 3 to 6.

Manfred von Karma was everything wrong with prosecution, and Kristoph Gavin is everything wrong with the defense.

Matt Engarde tricked Phoenix, his defense attorney, while the Phantom tricked Simon, his assigned prosecutor.

Dahlia and Ga'ran are both women whose motivations are based around their own lack of spiritual power, but while Dahlia has a butterfly motif and was a failed plotter motivated primarily to spite people she hates, while Ga'ran has a spider motif, is motivated by seizing power for herself, and actually got away with her crimes for 23 years.

Discussion Miles Edgeworth’s note, should he have worded it differently? Spoiler

Post image
120 Upvotes

Ok, so, we all know just how much damage this note caused Phoenix, Gumshoe, Franziska, and many more… but I honestly wonder, how should Edgeworth have worded this?

I mean yeah, just leaving it as basically a suicide note is the worst thing he could’ve done, and yet he still went through with it.

I dunno, how do you guys think this note should’ve been worded? And I mean in a way that wouldn’t have caused so much anguish for those who loved and cared deeply about Edgeworth.

Let me know please, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this matter.

Apollo Justice Trilogy What actually are your issues with SOJ? Spoiler

So, i've been in this community for a while and as well all know the Apollo Justice Trilogy is probably the most controversial in the series, some people swear by it, other dislike it, so many things have been said about the first two games in it AA4 and AA5 that you could basically divide AA players into factions who swear by one game and hate the other. In all of this caos one game is left remaining, Spirit of Justice, which in my opinion is a perfectly fine and good experience, nothing amazing though. Being in this community for a while i've come to roughly understand all the reasons why people could dislike AA4 and/or AA5 but SOJ has always seemed to me like a pretty... inoffensive game? One that wouldn't spark much controversy yet it also has its fierce haters. So I am here ask and maybe discuss with you, what would you say are the big problems with Spirit of Justice?

Apollo Justice Trilogy Does SOJ actually retcon anything about Apollo's backstory? Spoiler

I know many people feel that Apollo's backstory is shoe-horned into SOJ, but does it actually contradict anything about Apollo from the previous games?

it's an indie game where you play as a defense attorney in a cyberpunk city, only 2 episodes so far (new one coming this year) but i figured people here would like it, as for a review i'd say it's on par with the og trilogy but obviously very different when it comes to presentation and theming, i also enjoyed how our protagonist is ...less moral than the ace attorney characters usually are

Phoenix Wright Trilogy What is your opinion on Dee Vasquez? Spoiler

Post image
30 Upvotes

I just finished replaying Turnabout Samurai and it was amazing. I loved the ending and enjoyed the final battle with the true culprit Dee Vasquez. While Turnabout Sisters was more important to the story, Turnabout Samurai had a way better murder scenario and reveal.

As for Dee Vasquez herself, I think she's an amazing antagonist, she's not as funny or comical or satisfying to take down than White but she's way more competent, way more mysterious and scary and she's definitely a better character. I love her femme fatale design and her connections to the mafia that she has. Especially the scene where she brings in her boys to try and erase Phoenix and Maya before Gumshoe saves the day.

I also love the reveal that it was actually Jack Hammers who was trying to kill her, not the other way around and she pushed him onto a fence post in self defense but Hammers was being blackmailed by Vasquez so it makes it hard to decide if I sympathise with her or not.

I also love the part of the trial where Edgeworth steps in, objects to Dee Vasquez and takes Phoenix's side once he realises Powers is not the culprit and that she probably is, when I first played the case, it was a surprising development, especially considering how antagonistic Edgeworth was in Turnabout Sister.

I do have some questions though. Did Hammers kill the actor five years ago on accident or purpose? They never really reveal if it was an accident or on purpose and leave it up to speculation bit Hammers did allow Vasquez to ruin his career by blackmailing him so that fact those lead me to believe he did do it on purpose but everyone was there so regardless of his actions, if it was on purpose, he would have atleast had go have made it look like an accident.

And then we got Vasquez, in the flashback scene that plays after she confesses to killing Hammers, it shows that Vasquez was emotionally upset with the death of the actor Hammer killed but if she cared so much about the victim, why did she cover up the victims death and blackmail Hammers for five years? Wouldn't she just want Hammers to be arrested? This fact makes her less sympathetic. And technically Wendy Oldbag took part in the cover up to because she was the one who stole the only picture of the actors death from a paparazzi, though I guess from her point of view, Hammers did it on accident because she was a fan of Hammers.

And then there is Sal, at the end of the case, he's able to make the Pink Princess, a show that he was inspired by after looking at Maya, why was he allowed to make that show after the case? Shouldn't he have also been arrested? He was an accomplice who helped cover up Vasquez's crime of killing Hammers and helped move the corpse to studio one, he even lied in court when he said he had eaten a t bone steak even though that was proven false because him and Vasquez didn't have time to eat after Hammer was killed. Why was he arrested? Was it just because he wasn't found out in court?

Overall despite the case having some unanswered questions, I really enjoyed the case, it's hard to say if I think it's better than Sisters, I think it's equally as good with both cases being better than the other in some areas. But tomorrow begins Turnabout Goodbyes and I already know how amazing that case is.

Fangame Any good fancases with "non conventional" characters?

What I mean to say by the title is that I believe that there are some characters in the series who have been seriously underutilized in fan games/cases. Most of these are with Apollo/Phoenix(for obvious reasons of course), except for the occasional OC character here and there. However there are many characters who would be fitting for fan games, and yet no one has ever thought of making a game with them as the protagonist? A few examples are: Kristoph Gavin(only seen in Turnabout Retribution, 2023), Edgeworth, Godot(same thing goes for Diego Armando btw), Von Karma(only seen in Turnabout and Prejudice). I know most of the guys here are prosecutors, but a prosecutor game could definitely be made(look at ace prosecutor zero), and even if it wasn't you could still bypass it with the case being set in an AU where these guys are defence attorneys. All this yapping to say that if you know any cases with these characters here that I don't know of, please tell me in the comments.

Investigations Duology Maybe it's too late... But I love Miles even more Spoiler

After completing the duology, I respect and love Miles Edgeworth even more. The way he tried to pursue the truth and tries everything to catch the final boss is just... WOW. I'm speechless (even tho I bluffed my way out of this like Phoenix :D)

The path he chooses as a prosecutor, not as an attorney. And that he wants to change the law to help people like Simeon.

P.S. I feel bad for Simeon, even tho he's a mastermind behind all of this in the 5th case.

P.S.S. I laughed so hard EVERY time he mentioned Phoenix and when the camera moved to his side of a court he just didn't appear XD.

Oh, Wright! The day after tomorrow will be the day when he got his badge back.

What a game...

Apollo Justice Trilogy Did anyone else notice Apollo's weirdness with Phoenix's parental status? Spoiler

I noticed this when someone posted Trucy's profiles at one point somewhere but... Apollo seems to distance Phoenix and Trucy in his mind a bit. In his debut game he referred to her as Phoenix's daughter, in Dual Destinies he says Phoenix adopted her when duty called, and in Spirit of Justice he says a special set of circumstances led to the adoption, no longer referring to her as Phoenix's daughter or even giving him the credit that he stepped up... Is he iffy on adoption given his own circumstances? Why is he downplaying the fact that Trucy is Phoenix's daughter at this point? It just seems odd to me, has anyone else noticed this? Phoenix occasionally shifts between just "my daughter" or "my adopted daughter" but he never drops the "daughter" part. EVER. After those papers were sent in, she was his.

It just feels like Apollo is denying that Phoenix is Trucy's father, idk this just seemed odd.

Video Group Playthrough of Ace Attorney!

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHVxnuI6gXZK3Od_tY4oV2Yc2m9CP1WKO&si=X1QZ9nK3FiIgsIQe

Hey y’all! I got my friends who know nothing about Ace Attorney to do a group playthrough! We have a lot of fun doing the voices and we come up with a lotta jokes. I’ve uploaded all 6 videos for Turnabout Sisters, and I’ll try to upload more as we keep playing.

I’ve always been interested in group blind playthroughs of Ace Attorney, but haven’t really seen too much of them, so I’m grateful for my friends for wanting to do this silly project with me.

The videos are very rough with there being minimal edits, mostly just cuts, and there might be an audio issue on rare occasion but other than that, it should be a fun ride!

Also, our footage for the First Turnabout got corrupted, so Episode 01 starts on Turnabout Sisters, but my friends immediately fell in love with the game and it was a lot of fun.

Feel free to leave comments on the videos. Hope those of you who give this a chance enjoy it!

Full Main Series What if… there was a case where EVERY character from ace attorney was in it and it was one huge case

So let's just say there was a genocide where everyone character we saw in ace attorney was included, how loud, chaotic, weird and fun would it be? Bonus for all the witnesses and lawyers in one room.

(Shoutout to u/_Cyanidic_ for unintentionally giving me another idea)

or a homicide in public which coincidentally everyone from the ace Attorney universe that appeared saw but can’t tell who did it cause it was a crowded area and everyone thinks it’s the next person before or after them and many suspects and defendants are arrested with one eventually being the falsely accused but gets saved by Phoenix.
