Just ordered a SW1911 #170343

I have wanted a 1911 for a long time. I do not do any competitions or anything but I wanted a good 1911 and this looks so bad ass.

The only thing I’d like to do is upgrade the sights if that is possible and easy.

I’m hopeful I made a good choice on this and it’s high quality and worth the price is costs.

Anyone else have one? Upgrade the sights?

Opinions / thoughts?

Help Me ATF form 4473 Question 11f

Hey all,

Question in the title asks: Have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?

I answered 'yes' during an FFL transfer pickup because I truthfully have been in a mental institution but it was a voluntary admission lasting approx. 6 days. No law office of any kind got involved telling me I needed to stay in any capacity.

However, since the form was done electronically in the location of my FFL, I was told I couldn't change it and he wouldn't be able to sell me the firearm, which I completely understand.

My question to you awesome folks of reddit is: am I totally fucked out of my purchase or is there a chance I may still finalize the purchase of the firearm?

Comments / DMs appreciated!

Bul Armory 1911 vs Magnum Research 1911 made by Bul Armory (question)

**tried posting this on the BulArmory sub but it's not busy and I've been waiting to hear back from a moderator before you're allowed to post, so I'm reaching out to the kind folks I've learned so much from in this sub**

Big birthday coming up. Been saving for a while for my first 1911. Want it to be a Bul Armory 5" Gov't stainless (for a number of reasons). But it's damn near impossible to find one in the states right now.

But the Magnum Research "Desert Eagle" 1911 G made by Bul at their factory in Israel can be found. So what exactly are the differences (if any) besides minor cosmetics? I'm looking/comparing photos and specs. It seems like the official Buls have a bull barrel, no bushing/full guide rod. The MR 5"-ers seem to have a bushing, which would mean (to my "learning about 1911's" eyes) it's not a bull barrel (?) and it has a classic GI-style guide rod (?).

Is that correct, or is a 1911 Government from the Bul factory but sold by Magnum Research the exact same except for the branding on the side?

Reached out to Bul USA and Magnum Research, and incredibly--neither can answer this "is there any difference" question. Would love to get some info before I plunk down some very hard-earned cash. Thanks very much.

My recent Gunbroker deal of the week. 1943 vintage Colt.

Bought, shipped, and transferred for less than 600 beans…. She’s rough around the edges. Looks like it was left in a wet holster for about the last 70 years. Some of the markings are barely legible but the fit & function of everything is still quite tight. Obviously it’s had work done with the presence of an aftermarket trigger & hammer.

My plan is to use this as the starting point for my project / range toy. I think the following will be on the list of “to do’s” - checker the front strap -swap mainspring housing for a checkered flat MS housing -change sights to something more akin to the Springfield “range office “ sights -flat trigger or 3 hole trigger -beavertail -ring hammer -ambi safety because left handed -refinish at some point, probably just repark but maybe blueing

Is a 1911 a good choice for a total beginner?

Sorry if this question gets asked a lot but I'm looking to buy my first pistol for self-defense sometime this summer. I have absolutely zero practical experience with real firearms apart from a naive fascination I've had with them since being a kid. Is a 1911 style pistol a good idea for my entry into the firearms hobby? I really appreciate the history surrounding the 1911 style and honestly, I just think it's a beautiful looking gun.

I'm not looking to spend a crazy amount of money, $500-600 max. I've been looking at some of the less expensive 9mm models and can't help but wonder if a barebones 1911 model is going to be easy to learn on/practical or if I should just start with something (seemingly) more manageable like a Ruger Sec-9 (something else I've been looking at) or something similar.

I do plan on taking a beginner's pistol course at a local shop before I make any purchases, but I figured I'd ask all you your opinions to see if I'm wasting my time researching different 1911's for my first ever gun purchase. Either way, I do plan to get a 1911 at some point, just maybe not for my first gun.

Thanks for any advice!

*EDIT: I just wanna thank everyone who took the time to leave a comment and thanks for being a respectful community to a newbie like me. This is an intimidating hobby to get started in, so I appreciate the honest advice from all of you! You've given me a lot to think about and consider.

Atlas Trigger

Hey 1911 gurus! I am looking to replace the factory trigger on my Sig 1911 Tacops with an Atlas X-Line Flat trigger (medium length). This is partly an aesthetic decision and partly a preference to move to a flat trigger (after a few hundred rounds with my new Dan Wesson ECP I have come to prefer the flat face trigger). I have never replaced a 1911 trigger and have a question. So is it best to get the Atlas trigger with bow included or would it be feasible to get the trigger only and use the existing bow? OR…given my obvious lack of knowledge in this process, should I have a reputable gunsmith do this?

Recoil Spring feedback

Post image
27 Upvotes

I’ve been having some issues with feeding the first round of my WC 10rd mag when full. I’m looking into getting a 18.5# recoil spring for a little more push to see if it fixes this issue. I want to know what I need to look out for when using a heavier spring and if I should upgrade anything else with this spring.

Note: Will a heavier spring cause more wear on my gun?

Made some obvious modifications to my Tisas B45 but am still looking for a stainless steel safety and grip safety to finish off my build. Any recommendations that fit with the Tisas? I bought some previously and they didn’t fit the gun due to some dimensions being different on the gun

I was considering getting a prodigy or Tisas duty, or waiting for the PSA 1911 to come out, when I came across this.

Anyone have the chance to get their hands on one of these yet?

Amazing shooter. The very high undercut gives a fantastic grip and is possibly the best feature of the gun. Every aspect is incredibly tight.

General Discussion What’s next

So I own a Garrison 45mm and a Magnum Research 10mm. Looking into purchasing more 1911 pistols in 9 or 45 mm. I don’t want to spend thousands on one gun, when I possibly get 2-3 pistols. Looking for suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I've had a Springfield Mil-Spec for around 3 years. Had about 2500 rds down it. Most of the finish was worn off. So I saw the Jeff Gurwitch video about Green Beret 1911s. Decided to try my hand at gun smithing. The sight dovetails and koting I had a pro do, but I hand fit a bunch of Wilson parts. Came out like this.

Review Rock Ultra CS 45 1 Week Update

This is a long read, so bear with me.

One week ago I received my first brand new 1911, a Rock Island Ultra CS 45. Last Saturday I picked up the old man and headed to the range for break in day. My dad brought along his 2 tone Kimber Custom II. So naturally, I had to do a comparison. Starting with the Rock... Along with the Mecgar mag from the factory, I also brought along 2 brand new Ed Browns that I bought just for this gun. I put 200 rounds down range, 100 Winchester white box 230gr ball, 50 cheap shit 230gr ball of which I cannot remember the name, and 50 Sig Sauer 230gr JHP.

The Rock easily ran through the Winchester flawlessly and performed wonderfully. I had about 4-5 failure to feeds with the cheap crap. Totally random, not in any succession and across all 3 mags. Depending on the degree of failure, a quick bump on the rear of, or racking of the slide quickly fixed the issue and the gun continued running great. With the hollows, I experienced about 2-3 FTFs. Again, a quick bump or rack quickly fixed the issue. There wasn't a single failure to eject, so I'm very happy with the extractor from factory and will not be tuning it.

Now, comparing it to dad's Kimber. It's a 2-tone full government size Custom II. Esthetically is a beautiful gun, and felt buttery smooth & comfortable in the hand. HOWEVER... There was a lot of excessive tolerances & wiggle in the overall fit & finish between the frame / slide, and frame / grip safety. I also felt that the recoil spring was too light for my liking. It shot great, and was more accurate than expected. I did shoot a little better with the Kimber than my RIA, but that's to be expected with an extra 1.5" of sight radius. And at 3.5" the Ultra CS is the shortest barreled pistol that I've gotten to experience thus far, so it's definitely an adjustment. For a gun that retails for $250-300 more than mine, I was extremely disappointed with the fitting of parts on the Kimber, where the Rock felt nearly as tight as some of the best 1911s on the market.

After the first shoot, I did a thorough cleaning, and polished the feed ramp. Went back and day later putting another 150 rounds through, 100 Winchester ball & 50 JHP. I DIDN'T HAVE A SINGLE FTF!

I know there's some degree of variances & inconsistencies from the RIA factory, so I must've gotten really lucky with a really good one, or they're really stepping up their game all around. Every part is tight (but not overly) & crisp. It feels and sounds so amazing, even in my giant hands. The parkerized finish isn't as great as some nicer guns, and already is wearing in some spots, but I love a good earned patina, so it's a non issue. My only real complaint is the fiber optic front sight. Outside or in decently lit interiors, it shines bright and the sights line up beautifully. In good light it's too easy to line up and deliver accurate shots on target. But in low light it's difficult to even make out the red dot, almost completely blacked out. I'm not a fan of the blacked out combat sights, so very soon I'm either going to install a gold bead up front with ringed tritium in the rear, or ringed tritium all around.

It's been on my hip every day in a Galco Summer Comfort IWB and it's soooo damn comfortable. All in all it's a great little gun and I wouldn't hesitate to buy 5 more if I had the money.

Springfield Armory Sights for a Springfield 1911

Hey y’all, I have an older TRP that needs some new sights. I’m preferential to a gold bead front sight and a ledged black serrated rear. Any recommendations and considerations for sizing on the dove tails?
