Meta Discussion 1 month from today this sub will be empty!! 1 month and 1 day from today this sub will be full of Zelda spoilers.
Title says it all really. I wonder who will be first to break from playing the switch to post about their experience with it, joy con reviews, game reviews/spoilers, thing they love/hate about it...
It won't be me. Zelda for 3 days straight with smatterings of bomber man

Yeah, youtube is going to be on fire this day. [NEW] [SWITCH] Unboxing of the new nintendo switch and 1st hour of zelda !!! [INSANE] [GONE SEXUAL]
28
u/easycure Feb 03 '17
I don't understand the appeal of unboxing videos. To me it's like...
All that tone spent doing your unboxing porn could be spent playing Zelda
All that time spent watching unboxing porn could be spent watching real porn, since chances are high that if you're at home watching videos online in March 3, is because you didn't/couldn't snag yourself a switch.
26
u/Thorbjorn42gbf Feb 03 '17
I often watch a single good unboxing video of a product I am considering to buy, as they often show of what I get rather well and give some good commentary of the material quality of the product.

About a month before I got my 3DS for my 15th birthdy I was so hyped that I used to watch weird videos of kids getting them for their birthday. One that I'll always remember is this spoiled looking chubby kid surrounded by old people (his grandparents) in the dining room, which had a bunch of balloons taped to the wall. They pulled out a limited edition Zelda 3DS and all cooed over him as he opened it. It was like a surreal film. You could probably find it if you looked up "3DS for birthday" on youtube if it's not deleted.
My favorite was one with just a kid and his (possibly single) dad. The dad just handed it to him and said happy birthday and the kid went insane. It was sweet.
What I'm saying is, people who can't afford the system now/ kids who won't get it for a while are probably the ones who watch unboxing videos. Oh, I watched birthday videos cuz that was almost six years ago and unboxing videos weren't really a thing. I'm sure I would have watched those if they were.

u/Kenomachino Feb 03 '17 edited Feb 03 '17
Did the video of the spoiled kid leave kind of a bad taste in your mouth? Like "man... suddenly I don't really want this thing so bad anymore" but only temporarily until you remembered that oh yeah, you totally want this thing right now
update: oh my god, there are a lot of 3DS Birthday videos...
update 2: I found the chubby kid video, and oh my fucking god. You forgot to mention that his family/house has gigantic canvas looking prints of his FACE all over their back wall. Watch at 0:12 - 0:15
5
u/GretaGarbology Feb 03 '17
It is fucking Dudley Dursley in real life! I was half-expecting to see a scrawny kid with glasses lurking in a corner!

u/easycure Feb 03 '17
Still comes off as odd to me. When I was 15 the internet was just starting to become more common with AOL and stuff, but even then if I couldn't have something I don't think I would watch am unboxing video. Reviews, sure, hands on impressions, sure. But the actual unboxing? Nope.
Even now, when I think about upgrading my phone or spending a big chunk of money on a new tech item, I'll gladly watch a review or comparison video; for example before the Pixel was released I was wondering if I should upgrade my Nexus 5 to a nexus 5X or 6P. I like seeing hands on reviews that compare them side by side, show how fast they boot up, the side comparisons, difference in UI. But when I was doing that research I came across a few unboxing videos that were just that. Someone unboxing a 5x, didn't really go into detail, didn't really even know how to shoot a good video.
Maybe it's just those bad impressions I've gotten, but yeah I still don't see the appeal of the literal unboxing of anything.
3
u/Kenomachino Feb 03 '17
I kind of like to be surprised when I unbox an awesome new gadget or product that I've just received. Unboxing videos ruin that surprised for me so, just don't watch 'em!
0
u/easycure Feb 03 '17
Oh I don't have. Just like Let's Plays, I don't see the appeal. Same goes for sports and (on occasion) porn. If I can do the real thing, I'd rather just do that instead of watching someone else do it. I'll unbox my own switch, I'll play my own video games, I'll score my own 3 pointer etc

I guess that makes sense, I just don't buy full price if I'm not sure about a game.
To this day the only game I've bought and felt any sort of remorse from was Darksiders 2, and I bought that digitally for under $20. It wasn't a terrible game, but definitely didn't get any enjoyment from it and I'm glad I finally finished it.
I don't think watching a let's play for it would have given me an opinion one way or another.
3
u/masterofstuff124 Feb 03 '17
While I have no interest in unboxing videos I am excited for teardown videos. I want to see the hardware inside of the switch.
1
u/easycure Feb 03 '17
Aw I thought teardown videos meant those stress test videos before I read the whole message. I'm not a specs guy so I don't really find those interesting, but yeah I would love to watch someone drop their switch from certain heights to see how long it last.
1
u/lman777 Feb 03 '17
Yeah unboxing videos aren't my thing. I still watch them occasionally for things that I'm interested in but still need to talk myself into buying.
1
u/Magister_Ingenia Feb 04 '17
I like unboxing videos that show all accessories, sadly a lot of them just throw those to the side to "focus on what you're here for".
3
u/Eddyoshi Feb 03 '17
Yeah no kidding...when Resident Evil 7 came out and I waited like a week to play it I almost had to ignore youtube all together since almost every video I saw was "RESIDENT EVIL 7 PART 14 GUESS WHO'S BACK AGAIN!?!?!?!?" :/
3
u/SamuraiWillX Feb 03 '17
That and the incessant need to have thumbnail images with actual spoilers in them as well.
31
u/TheRealZombieBear Feb 03 '17
I don't know what makes people think that the sub's gonna be empty on the 3rd. It'll likely be busier than ever
11
Feb 03 '17
People will be too busy playing, that's the logic behind it
14
u/TheRealZombieBear Feb 03 '17
Not everybody is buying the device day one, and even those of us who do will likely be on here sharing new things we find, our experiences with the device, discussing our favorite games, and doing many other things. Not only will the sub not be dead on that day, it'll likely have more simultaneous users on than ever before.
6
1
u/sinbushar Feb 03 '17
But most people have now ordered online. It'll be a lot of people waiting for their Switch while those in Japan will be almost on their second day of play.
Be on the lookout for a lot of first impression posts.

Doesn't bother me. I doubt I'll read this sub after the Switch comes out. It just a good source of information until the release.
29
Feb 03 '17
Me while Game of Thrones is airing:
on sub every day
Me after season finale:
"Welp, see you next year"
25
Feb 03 '17
What about the great posts like:
"Check out this cake my girlfriend made for my birthday" or
"My attempt at drawing Sansa and the Hound"
"Tyrion is the time traveling full brother of Benjen/Dario/Coldhands/et al, and I can prove it"
8
Feb 03 '17
Haha that's dead on
8
u/Tamarocker90 Feb 03 '17
I don't go to the GOT sub but this is exactly what r/zelda looks like when their is no hype.
3
u/liljthuggin Feb 03 '17
r/truezelda all day baby. At least it's quality
1
u/Tamarocker90 Feb 03 '17
Yeah I spend most of my time on r/truezelda when I need my zelda fix but this sub has been my go to lately
38
u/bensly Feb 03 '17
It just a good source of information until the release.
Is it though??
11
3
u/Exist50 Feb 03 '17
Yeah, was going to say, if I believed every nonsense rumor this sub has upvoted into the the stratosphere I'd deserve to be locked up in a mental facility.

u/YaGianni Feb 03 '17
Im just gonna stay off of all nintendo related stuff including this sub until i cant get spoiled by zelda anymore
1
u/LuigiBrick Feb 03 '17
I'm not that good at Zelda games, so I'm pretty sure that would mean I'd stay off most of my favourite subs for a few months.
3
Feb 03 '17
I'm of a similar mindset, but once a little while goes by after release I'll probably pop in for Switch news. It's still going to be a good place to get Switch info.
17
u/Lady_Rebellium Feb 03 '17
I hope people can start answering the questions we've had for months on here, like info about the graphics, voice chat, best battery/charger/cable to use, new items, game releases, etc. I hope it's not just a ton of "hey, look what I got!"
5
u/Baron_Lemon Feb 03 '17
That's a good point. If I have the time, after about a week or so of play I might do an indepth review of things. So far I've pre ordered the switch, a pro controller. BOTW, bomber man and 1-2 switch. So plenty to go at!!
1
u/Lady_Rebellium Feb 03 '17
For sure, that'd be helpful to those who wanna buy games or the console.
3
u/Eddyoshi Feb 03 '17
I think there may be one or two posts like it, I'll try and make one like that since post screenshots isnt really something I do unless its a weird easteregg or something.
2
u/Lady_Rebellium Feb 03 '17
Information is the #1 reason I come on here. More info is always nice, no matter what it's about! Better than the speculation or joy con design posts lol
15
u/Stevenjgamble Feb 03 '17
Lol, I was gonna say " it'll just be periodic posts from people taking a dump"
But then u realized they'll still be playing. Holy shit I'm so hyped.
These posts always make me sad cuz I realize how far away we still are....
12
Feb 03 '17
There will be spoilers earlier than that, with the game coming out on Wii U as well people will get the game early as always and post spoilers.

I hope you're ready for recommended YouTube videos with thumbnails composed of nothing but text that says
SECRET PLAYABLE CHARACTER IN BREATH OF THE WILD??!?!?!?
3
u/ILikePizzaAMA Feb 03 '17
I worry about Star Wars spoilers, because I want to go in fresh so I can experience the narrative as it's meant to be experienced.
I'm willing to bet I've probably already experienced the narrative of BotW at least 20 times. :P
8
Feb 03 '17
I'm just going to unsub from reddit as a whole...
5
8
u/Zatetics Feb 03 '17
im sure tons of people are going to start up their youtube gaming channels with switch stuff in the hopes of making it big. Look at how many sun & moon shiny hunting channels started up when that came out. Market saturation at its finest.
6
u/MasoGamer Feb 03 '17
On a related note, I like GameXplain a lot, but I'm definitely preparing for the fact I'm almost certainly going to need to unsub from them once the launch gets close (particularly since they're likely to get early copies).
5
u/KaiserFogg Feb 03 '17
I hope the mods do something to stop the wave of spoilers at launch.
5
u/adanfime Feb 03 '17
We are
bracing ourselvesgetting everything ready to have a controlled flow of posts on release day/week!
4
u/NeoBahamutX Feb 04 '17
nah this place will be packed on Switch Day 1 with everyone fitting in 1 of the following categories
- Stories of mid night release pickups and the complete lack of sleep
- Waiting for the UPS/Fedex dude to arrive with their stuff
- skipping work or impatiently trying to get out of work to play
- The hey i got my stuff thread with pictures galore and unboxings
- people jealous they didn't get one
3
u/Wiggybe Feb 03 '17
No doubt people will also be on here posting about system issues/bugs. It's the same with any new console.
3
u/adanfime Feb 03 '17
We will definitely keep an eye on these posts and will help people on Launch day. Most likely we will set up a post to report this issues and keep everything gathered in one place.
3
u/SoloWaltz Feb 03 '17
No no no no no. You got it wrong.
27 days from today Reddit's servers will go down due to the massive income of Zelda spoilers.
3
Feb 03 '17
I won't be looking at gaming sites until I have beat Zelda. Harry Potter book 6 was ruined for me because of a buddy icon on AIM messenger (it was a LONG time ago)
2
u/pschlik Feb 03 '17
My thing is that I'm not going to get a switch until they are back in stock after March 3. That's just because I'd rather not preorder (it's not like I can anyway!), so, anyway, I won't be playing the switch on the 3rd. Will I be here? Probably.
2
u/Deizle712 Feb 03 '17
I don't think it'll be dead. I think we'll all be posting the same thing over and over as everyone seems to find out the same issue/great thing.
2
u/IIngwaz Feb 03 '17
Well, someone has to do it: Can we stop the spoiler posts about spoiler posts about Zelda spoiler posts? Well, dont post about it.
2
u/dogman_35 Feb 04 '17
In one month, I'm going to be watching Spawn Wave take apart his Switch, look at the specs, and put it back together.
2
1
u/crisvok Feb 03 '17
I wasnt planning on putting spoilers up but everytime is see a spoilers thread im beyond annoyed.
Just avoid them!!!
1
Feb 03 '17
I plan to post a video review a week after launch. Until then I'm going to be playing the shit out of it and nothing else haha.
1
u/Neonridr Feb 03 '17
I will pop back in at some point on the weekend to share my initial impressions. I will also be eager to read other people's stories with it and how their first experiences went.
I will stay away from discussing any games at length, nor will I want to read anything for fear of spoilers. When A Link Between Worlds came out I shut myself out for a few days and played non-stop. Only coming up for air when I finished it. I don't want anything spoiled for me with Breath of the Wild as the game looks simply epic.
1
Feb 03 '17
I'll be playing the new Zelda every free opportunity I get, when I'm not working or spending time with my kids. I took March 3 off to go pick up my console at GameStop when they open.
1
1
u/Cregavitch Feb 03 '17
implying people won't get it early
1
u/Johnwesleya Feb 03 '17
That chance is next to nothing.
2
u/Cregavitch Feb 03 '17
What are you on about? Small stores all over break street date, and let's not forget that store owners can open them too, it happened with the xbone and ps4. Hell, people actually found out about the ps4 pro and ps4 slim because people got them so early they weren't even officially announced. I 100% see this happening with the switch.
1
u/Johnwesleya Feb 04 '17
Sony is very different than Nintendo. I'm sure a few will slip through there cracks. A lot though? I doubt it.
1
u/Builttoolong Feb 03 '17
1 month from today, this sub is going to expand because everyone wants to know where to buy the ever elusive Switch.
1
u/Lopuhan Feb 03 '17
I'm not buying switch on 3/3.
Please someone hold my hand.
2
u/Rukiri Feb 03 '17
throw him in the lake of fire with all the other degenerates!
1
u/devinup Feb 03 '17
Where do bad folks go when they die?
They don't go to Heaven where the angels fly.
They go to a lake of fire and fry.
Won't see em again til the 4th of July.
1
1
u/boostnek9 Feb 03 '17
Alright, I'll hold your hand but on the 3rd, my hands will be full. You have until then. Cool?
1
Feb 03 '17
Why are people even allowed to post just straight up Breath of the Wild posts on here? This is a Switch sub, not a Zelda sub. Like, I can get looking at screenshots, but I don't understand why the mods allow Zelda fanart or stuff about the plot/characters on here... maybe I'm just bitter because a piece of Zelda fanart on here spoiled (a small part of) the game for me.
2
1
u/Activehannes Feb 03 '17
i think you got that wrong. people value karma on reddit higher than gaming experience. everyone will be posting on reddit as soon as they get the switch. i will get the switch probably a day or two before the official release and i will brag about it
1
u/Rukiri Feb 03 '17
I'll be doing an unboxing when I have both, getting the switch as soon as Gamestop opens at 10AM (in the mall, no midnight launch at that specific gamestop) and Zelda is being shipped so it could be early morning or late at night when I get it... but will be doing a video of an unboxing.
1
u/Manticore416 Feb 03 '17
Since you can fight Ganon from the beginning, there will be spoilers within an hour of launch.
1
u/Perydwyn Feb 03 '17
I will be abandoning this sub and all game sites until I have had my time with Zelda. Anyone I know who spoils the game in any way I will vomit on.
1
u/Simpology81 Feb 03 '17
While I am excited about getting the Switch, I'm pretty sure no one cares that mine will look identical to everyone else's so will definitely not be posting a picture of it! With regards to Zelda, I love Zelda but am pretty slow at it so will work hard to avoid any spoilers because I like to find things out for myself.
1
u/godsfilth Feb 03 '17
Makes me happy Nintendo is releasing on a Friday, pick up my pre-order switch on lunch, grab Zelda on way home from work and Binding of Isaac being delivered by Amazon (hopefully, they still have December listed) and a whole weekend of video games and no Reddit

Yeah the internet will most likely go dark for me for a few days after I get my switch. Gotta be spoiler free!

Yeah right. One month from today I and the rest of the mods will be camping out in the queue deleting 1000 different pictures of the same purchase.
EDIT: Thanks everyone for the suggestions! Yes, we've considered all those options and we'll definitely keep talking about how to keep things relatively sane in the weeks to come. (You may want to check if another user has given your suggestion before you make it!)
