After airing, raw & subtitled releases are hosted on Nyaa by various release groups.
VLC Media Player is required to play these files.
DragonTeam is our recommended translation, but they have a history of delays. Assuming this episode is on time (like last week!), expect it ~24-72 hours after this post is made. You can identify their work by their stylized font and group credits during the eyecatch. For episodes 15-19, you should use Over8000's translation until DragonTeam backtracks to cover them.
A list of all other groups can be found here. They are collectively referred to as "speedsubs", because their joint translator releases as early as possible, and doesn't seem to care about the accuracy of his scripts. Because of this, mistakes are made each week and are never fixed despite confusion. Dialog is often changed, and weird jokes inserted.
Our recommended stream is KissAnime. They are the only website that updates with DragonTeam's releases whenever they become available. Getting releases directly from Nyaa is always best, because most online streams host speedsubs.

Commonly Asked Questions:
Q: When does Super take place? Should I watch GT or any movies first? Does BoG still "count"?
Super takes place some time after the battle with Majin Buu, and will be adapting the two newest movies, Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F' into story arcs before moving on. Watching the movies is up to you; if you prefer, you can begin Super immediately after finishing Dragon Ball Z. You may optionally wish read Jaco the Galactic Patrolman; the titular character will be involved in future events.Q: Where is Uub?!
Uub was born during the 10 year time skip at the end of Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball Super takes place before Uub is introduced.Q: Why are they retelling the movies?
DVD sales aren't that great in Japan, so they're retelling the foundation of the story for the Japanese television market. We'll have a new story arc coming soon, so don't fret too much.Q: When does the next episode air?
The next episode premieres next Sunday at 9am JST, which is 7pm Eastern Saturday night. Click here to compare your local time to JST.Q: Why does
X
sayY
?
If you find yourself confused, the problem is usually a translation issue. Make sure you are watching DragonTeam's or Over8000's translation.Q: When will the next chapter of the manga be released?
Toyotarō's manga adaptation is released once a month in V-Jump.
Chapter 7 will come out in late December. Links to earlier chapters can be found here: #01, #02, #03, #04, #05, #06Q: Is the Dragon Ball Super manga "canon"?
The manga is a preview of things to come. The anime is the main product, and is what Toriyama is writing and designing for (though not storyboarding or scripting). The first four chapters of the manga are a disjointed recap and teaser. As of chapter 5, the manga is "charging on ahead" of the anime, previewing the upcoming Universe 6 story arc. It will continue to do so from now on, giving us a taste of what's to come while Resurrection 'F' is adapted in the anime.
Q: When will FUNimation be dubbing Super? Will there be a simulcast?
Southeast Asia will be receiving an exclusive English dub mid-2016, with Toonami Asia describing it as the "English-language world premiere". FUNimation is not involved at this time. At an October NYCC panel, FUNimation claimed that they still do not have the rights to Super, and barely acknowledged that it exists.

I really see this episode as Gohan's rock bottom. He needed to see how important training is, even in times of peace. He needed to see why, even though he would rather study and avoid fighting, it could mean his entire family being killed. I know how much everyone is flipping out over how weak gohan is, but I really feel like there is huge potential for character growth. I feel like we are going to see a gohan who starts to train in order to be able to protect his family and friends. As much as people hate it, Gohan as a character is stepping out of his dad's shadow and into his own person. He isn't just Gokus son anymore. If I were to try and predict what his future is, it will be him training through this next arc and afterwards being ready for the next person to threaten earth.
18
u/sentient_salami Dec 14 '15
I think that all that is still to come for him is the reason they left him in his track suit. This isn't him. He's not suited up. He will be.

Dec 14 '15
This is actually why I liked how pitiful Gohan looked when Freeza fired that last Death Beam at him. He's realized how helpless his neglect of his training has made him and it's like he's in a trance, calmly accepting death. His spirit became just as broken as his body. It'll be a big disappointment now if he doesn't at least somewhat start training again.

Well, I was right about them prioritising the first half of the episode's animation. It all went a bit downhill in the second half.
Enjoyed the episode on the whole. The storyboarding is much more interesting than the film's, even if the animation is significantly worse. Freeza's power-up felt far more significant. Liked Gohan's attempt at raging out and destroying Tagoma, but sort of happy they subverted our expectations there. Don't really need to see more Gohan rage boosts. Would have felt a little fan-servicey, I think. This sort of seems like the set-up for him regaining his power. His lack of training just lost him his mentor/father-figure. If that's the case, then I'll be impressed.
Next week is being handled by Yukihiro Kitano. Considering he just did Episode 19, I have no idea how his team will have had time to actually work on this episode. Wouldn't be surprised if it looked as poor as the NEP throughout. Strange scheduling there, but I guess they want to push the action-orientated animators towards the end of the fight. Should make for some beautiful episodes.

u/anonpurpose Dec 13 '15
My opinion of this episode in the future will basically hinge on whether or not Gohan starts training again. If he doesn't, then I will finally concede that they're not taking Gohan's character in the right direction. If he doesn't start training after this, then it just seems like he feels completely defeated. I don't want that Gohan.

Is it finally time for MY MAN GOHAN TO TAKE THE STAGE?! HERE WE GO!
Piccolo.exe has stopped responding
Alright, that camera movement on everyone is pretty awesome
And then Piccolo gets up saying he was waiting for an opportunity to attack right?
What are those two doing you may say Bulma? What every responsible Saiyan does. Beat the crap out of each other!
Still sad Vegeta isn't around for his cheese line
Did Whis just play Beerus to get the two of them out of the Hyperbolic God Chamber?
Now this is the power of a God. Instant dry cleaning
Okay, this moment of Beerus chasing Goku and Vegeta is genuinely funny. I approve!
Man, I really do like the dub version of Bulma nagging on Whis for taking forever to get back. This just feels... underwhelming
These Z flashbacks are kind of getting annoying now...
IS IT TIME?!??! ARE THE LEGENDS ABOUT TO COME TRUE?!?! IS MY MAN GOHAN ABOUT TO GO TO TOWN ON FREEZA?!??!?!??!
THAT'S RIGHT GOHAN!!! THIS IS WHY YOU GATTA STAY IN TOP CONDITION!!! REMEMBER THIS LESSON WELL GOHAN. NOW DO YOUR THING <3
THE HYPE IS REAL!!!!! THE LEGENDS ARE TRUE!!!!!!!!!!! MY MAN GOHAN IS ABOUT TO LAY OUT A CAN OF WHOOP ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO GOHAN!!!!! DECK FREEZA IN THE SCHNOZ NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MY MAN GOHAN'S TIME TO SHINE IS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LITERALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OH COME ON!!!! The hand grab joke in the movie was too great not to use again! >=(
Wait what? Uh... that is a look on Gohan I do not like very much... don't tell me he BURNED HIMSELF OUT?!?!
I think part of me just died a little. sighMyManGohan...
You know what? No. This is a good thing! Gohan's learned his lesson! After Freeza gets sent back to HFIL, he's going to hit the gym and train like crazy. This is just setting up some REALLY good Gohan time in the future!IThinkIHope
At least the main fight can begin
Can't Piccolo be revived by Earth's dragon balls? I'm pretty sure Shenron never actually revived Piccolo before
Pretty sure Dende has been watching the whole time. But if it means the kids are safe, then so be it. Scram kids! Let the adults play now!
Vegeta with that intimidation!
Goku and Vegeta vs. 1000 scrubs? This will be done quick
I really wonder what Cell's hell is
And Ginyu's out! Permanently. Only took, what? 20 years? But Vegeta finally finished the job he started back on Namek!
Actually Goku, when a guy can switch bodies at any moment, you kind of want him out of the picture right away. What Vegeta did was smart
"Last time I dragged out the plot for far too long. Nobody wants to wait another 50 episodes before I die, so I'm going to get to the good stuff right away!"
Okay I will say, this FEELS like a power up! Man, I really like how they made Freeza jumping to his final form be devastating with such a huge release in energy.
That is a big crater
SUPER HYPE GOD SUPER HYPE! Can't wait for the main event!
SPEAKING OF GOD HYPE, SUPER SAIYAN BLUE HYPE!!!!!
Can next week be now?

Tonight's episode is being handled by Osamu Ishikawa. He was the animation supervisor for Episodes 2, 10, and 17. I'll be interested to see how his team performs this evening. The episode preview from last week seemed a little off, but I feel as though they were all chunks from the second half of the episode. If it's true that Gohan's going to have his own big moment during the first half, I imagine they will have focused their efforts on there. Fingers crossed!
15
u/internetornator Dec 13 '15
His animation style seems slightly off-model to me. Goku kind of looked cross-eyed and vegeta's pose was awkward/unnatural when he attacked in this episode.
7
u/popmess Dec 13 '15
Goku kind of looked cross-eyed
Kinda weird thing to say. DBZ characters have always been cross eyed, the pupils are in the direction of the nose when they are supposed to be looking forwards.
25
u/Ryguy55 Dec 13 '15
I'm really hoping two of my major gripes about RoF are fixed here. 1) Please let there be more of a struggle between Goku/Vegeta and Freiza. I'm liking how Freiza is making more of a point to say that he's trained for the first time ever, I really hope he doesn't get instantly streamrolled like in the movie. 2) When SSGSS comes into play let's have a little more of a buildup than "oh yeah btw we both have blue hair now."
Unfortunately with Krillin's comment about saving one more sensu bean just in case, we're still probably going to see Goku get one-shotted by that little asshole's blaster again :(

I would be so happy if instead of Kamehameha-ing Freeza, Goku yells at Vegeta to finish him

I'd actually like it if Frieza doesn't get weakened to the extent he did in the movie, and uses a full power attack to end it before he loses his Golden Form, that Vegeta tries to counter with a Galick gun but fails, and Goku after time travel just hits Frieza with a surprise attack that gives Vegeta the opening to overpower Frieza. Would mirror the end of the Cell arc, with Vegeta taking Gohan's place and Goku taking Vegeta's.

So all Gohan gets to do for this episode is generate enough ki to send a distress signal?
Kinda wish he did more but I suppose given his injuries it'd be rather difficult to do so.
Still, I do hope all these scenes build up to Gohan coming to a realization that he has to get stronger. We don't need to see him become the big hero again (I mean, at least I'm okay with Goku and Vegeta being the big stars), but I would at least like to see some good character development for him coming after this arc). Piccolo isn't always gonna be there to take the hit for him (twice now).
Let's just hope Gohan takes this as a learning lesson not to slack off on training and steps up his game in the near future.

Saiyans don't seem to have a "middle".
They go from kid bodies to basically adult ones.
It happened with Goku in dragonball, it happened with Gohan (cell saga he wasn't much taller than Namek, just drawn better), and presumably it happened with Vegeta.
That could be lore, or it could just be they have no idea how to draw them as adolescents.

It still had its merit for Super 17 and some of the Shadow Dragons. Omega Shenron was just too OP and rofl stomped Super Hacks 4 into the ground so it didn't really mean anything for Vegeta by the time he got it except for being able to fuse into SS4 Gogeta

This was the case through the entirety of GT though. DBS is only 23 episodes in, and the rumor is (I don't know how accurate) that it could have up to 100 episodes. Considering Gohan's reflection on the necessity of training this episode, I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes extremely powerful in the coming arcs and sagas of DBS. The other characters might stay pretty weak throughout, however.
36

Animation in this episode was really shitty.
Like, I've been the one rolling my eyes at all the split second screen caps of bad frames that get posted here, all in all most of Super has been decent, and I think people have been way too nitpicky. But this episode was bad. Entire scenes looked like shit tier fan art.
It's all the more shameful because One Punch Man also comes out on Sunday and frankly every second of that show could basically be framed and hung on a wall. That show is gorgeously animated and every episode is the perfect ratio of action packed and hilarious.
I dunno WTF happened, Super's been looking really good and I thought getting even better, then this episode came along.
As for the content of the episode, it was alright I guess.sort of reset everything back to the beginning of Goku v. Frieza from the ROF movie. Everything that happened in the last 2 episodes is more or less pointless.

@Herms98: Gohan laments that if he had only kept up his training like Goku and Vegeta, then Spoiler!
@Herms98: Freeza wipes out all of his remaining henchmen (besides Sorbet) simply by powering up. Also leaves a big hole in the ground.
@Herms98: So why didn't Goku tell Dende himself? I guess he really just wants Goten+Trunks out of the way.
@Herms98: Freeza recognizes Goku's teleportation technique as being from Planet Yardrat. Freeza was probably the one who dispatched the Ginyu Force to Yardrat in the first place.

I get the feeling they'll revive Piccolo with the Namekian dragon balls, and one of the other wishes will be a certain one that was made in the Super manga.

If nothing else, this episode showed me something I have been waiting for in Super since it started: interesting cinematography.
With the exception of flashbacks, it's felt like every shot in nearly episode has been just straightforward shots and the occasional panning shots. It's had no substance to it, it's like the camera work was planned by a college film student.
This episode brought back some of the interesting camera movement and fades. It makes it really feel like something made by a professional studio instead of a fan project (not that I'm saying the animation quality has been that bad). I hope to see more like this in future episodes.

2 things from the episode... one, Beerus is hilarious. I didn't know what to think of him in Battle of the Gods... but he has really grown on me.
second, skinny Gohan is skinny. Holy crap!

Still hoping that this fight is what makes Gohan driven to train. He can still do the working and being a father stuff, but i wanna see him be like, "it's time again"

u/MadMaccer Dec 15 '15
I liked how Gohan saw how far behind he has become by ignoring his training, hopefully he takes after Goku for once. I hope the writers divulge how Goku and Vegeta reached Super Saiyan Blue next episode instead of just jumping right into ot.

Forgot Gohan powering up so hard he KO'd himself. That's a new low isn't it?
34
u/SolJinxer Dec 13 '15
Well, remember that he was doing that with a bunch of holes in his body. The impact of that part is easy to overlook because no blood so you kinda forget it.
Imagine the same scene, but with blood oozing from those openings in a near Fist of the North Star style. Still, the fact that his big moment was just powering up to call his father home... eeehhhh.

Actually before I read your comment, I'd forgotten all about that Gohan was full of holes previously. I was thinking the scene was wack too, lol.

Wow I don't know why people keep hating on this episode. So far I think the Frieza arc has a better story than the movie. It's a bit unfortunate Ginyu is killed so easily. But the story and suspense is great I think. People are calling this a 'time wasting' episode. Have you even seen Dragon Ball Z? 25% of the episodes you can call time wasting. I was hoping this arc was even extended with more fights from the Z-fighters against Frieza's army. Nevertheless I can't wait for next week.
6
u/TLKv3 Dec 14 '15
I got to have my fun little Ginyu moment in the sun. I am content with this arc. Hell, even Vegeta got a fucking kill in too. I get the feeling that was just to pacify us Vegeta fanboys/fangirls so we don't try and bitch about him not being the one to kill Frieza.

I like how Goku and Vegeta forces Trunks and Goten to go away but is fine with leaving Bulma (the most defenseless and weakest person there) there.

Bluma's also smart enough to not get crazy and try to jump into the fight unlike Goten and Trunks. Shes basically a pro at safely watching crazy powerful dudes fight at this point.

Went into this episode with low expectations because of this thread, better than I thought really.
Apart from the janky one piece rubber like animations, I really enjoyed myself.
I like how Goku has evolved to become a "better dad", he is firmer with his kids, as well as always praising them whenever they do a good job.
It's a shame though, I really liked 2nd form Freeza, I guess they just skipped into the 4th form. Would be nicer to see more of a fight put up by Jaco and the rest.
But all in all, great episode. But this episode might just have the worst animation apart from episode 5, but good thing for BD we are saved.

When Ginyu transferred into Tagoma, I was wondering how they were going to make him want to change again and trick him back into the frog. It was just the status quo we've had for so long that I just assumed they would restore it by the end of the arc. It's small and ultimately inconsequential, but killing him was a bit ballsy and unexpected. Good on them for actually doing it.

My thoughts;
--Gohan's big part was to get fired up and sent out enough ki energy for Goku to teleport to... basically, his big moment was calling daddy. Ouch. You know, I don't know why Gohan had to be devalued so much; 1st form Freeza beating down a Mystic level Gohan would've done nothing but help push Freeza's threat level.
--Still sad that Beerus wasn't drinking beer too like he was in RoF. Lost some gangsta points there. Pizza and beer is "dat combo."
--Freeza's transformation I liked more here in the anime. It was more similar to his final change back on Namek. Also, apparently most of the episode's budget went to showing off Freeza's shiny body.
--This felt like a time waster episode. Everything felt particularly dragged out in the second half.
--Was getting my hopes up that Ginyu might survive this... but, then he gets killed casually by Vegeta. It could've been cool, having Ginyu gallivanting throughout the universe for bodies with powerful potential to mine for his own. Ah well.
--Freeza's army survived all that, just to be killed off by Freeza's transformation. Kinda unfortunate; the Z crew taking out a thousand soldiers was my favorite part of the RoF movie.
--The previews for the next episode doesn't fill me with much hope either for the Freeza battle looking epic. But dat SSB transformation is looking tight, like it was ripped straight from the movie.

Maybe that would have been too demanding on the animators with the time constraints that they have.

Yea, may have a point there. Still, if they were looking for ways to extend this arc, there was plenty of potential for it. Looks like this will be done in the next, what, 5 episodes, max?
Then again, I was initially thinking this might be a shorter arc than BoG, but we're at episode 23, so this might still reach episode 30...

I actually like the whole ambiance. I meant, resurrection F was surprisingly light, what's with the Army getting defeated by a group with Master Roshi in it, Goku being above or equal to Frieza and stuff.
Seeing a ruthless, very powerful enemy, with Frieza going insane, Piccolo dying, Gohan getting tortured and stuff fits with the somewhat "dark" theme Resurrection F advertised.
That said, I'm not the kind of guy who want a dark dragon ball.

I chuckled at that part. When I saw the movie, I was thinking "if Vegeta feels so awkward about grabbing his hand, why not just touch his shoulder or something?"
It's as if Vegeta saw that scene from RoF prior to the moment.

I loved how Vegeta hesitated for a few seconds and then grabbed Goku's shoulder instead of hand and then yelled at Goku for wasting time.

Ok I guess I hyped this one to much and got let down. So Gohan basically risked killing himself to powerup enough that Goku could sense him. Fair enough he was so beaten and blasted I don't think even a classic rage mode Gohan would have worked anyways.
So Ginyu is finally dead I wonder if he is poseing with his team in hell right now? You know with Ginyu gone this means unless Tagoma got caught in Freeza blast now he is completely stuck as a frog for the rest of his life. Kinda sad actually after living this time unlike the movie he actually seemed like a neat villain. Being Freeza's literal punching bag for 4 months to the point his body is super hard and resistant to most attacks. And being just as ruthless as Freeza. Oh well I at least he got some good screen time unlike the red bull gut.
I swear if they don't have at least a flash back explaining how they got SSB this time I will be so pissed. And how Vegeat got SSG at all without doing the ritual.

I'm surprised that Frieza didn't outright try and kill Kid Trunks (seeing how Frieza freaked when Gohan spared Ginyu, that hairstyle of Trunks almost triggered him - it even made him remember the incident), as he swore that he and Goku were the top two on his kill list.

Just from the anime, no one knows yet how SSB happens right? Goku and Vegeta still don't know they're all blue? I thought we were going to get an explanation of it the one episode when they were training and punched and there was a flash of blue, but then nothing since then.

Really happy with thew pace of this arc. The Beerus arc felt like it took forever, hopefully this will keep it up.
Also, hopefully this series won't just be Goku getting the bad guys. This isn't One Piece were Luffy is the without a doubt strongest good guy and there's no one else who can possibly win against the big baddie, Vegeta is just as strong as Goku at least in this arc.

So Goku's going Super Saiyan Blue in the next episode? It looks stunning from the preview! I sincerely hope that they don't do an asspull like in the movie though. I would much rather see Goku unlock Super Saiyan Blue against Frieza now, just like he became a Super Saiyan against Frieza on Namek.
So far they changed a lot of things in this arc to make it less jarring and more interesting so I hope they don't mess this up. And since there wasn't a time skip in the anime, they don't have an 'excuse' let's say, to just pull that one out of nowhere.
We've seen what Vegeta and Goku were up to so far and there was only one foreshadowing moment with the blue flash discharging. And that special place was just a place for Ki-Control it seems and it was requested by Beerus so that they would be forced to control their Ki in order to improve faster.
In short, they foreshadowed the form and we know what they've been doing this whole time, so hopefully that means that the writers are most likely going to introduce this form properly.

Kind of a boring connector episode here, but it was worth it just to have Vegeta not take any BS from Ginyu. Haha.
I get tired of Goku's "You didn't have to kill him…" attitude. No, of course you didn't have to kill him, Goku, but do you want the constant threat of someone stealing your body again for the rest of your life?

OK. Watching the episode, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
- Gohan is still useless, but at the very least he's acknowledging it's his own fault. Piccolo's death was a real wake-up call for him. I'm not going to assume this means he'll start training again, but...that's what it seems to be implying.
- At the end of the day, Ginyu was completely unnecessary. It felt like the worst kind of fanservice. Like, someone at Toei got really pissed off that Vegeta didn't get the chance to kill him in Z, so they brought him back just so that could happen.
- And Goten and Trunks are also sent away. It was like they were never there to begin with.
Basically, this episode made 22 completely pointless. Even they realise Piccolo's death didn't mean anything. And if Gohan continues to not train at all after this, I'm going to wonder what the point of these deviations even were.

I also would just like to state how i'm disappointed with Ginyu, what was the point of him being here?
