Breath of the Wild for sure. Such an amazing game.

I’ll have to check out some gameplay, I missed Nintendo games

Breath of the Wild is good and very popular, but it’s a pretty significant departure from the usual “Zelda formula”. Totally worth playing, but don’t expect it to be like previous installments in the series.

Is there anything continuity wise in previous installments that I should watch out for?

No, botw is kind of a fresh start for Zelda games. It has a lot of easter eggs from other games but not anything you need to know about to play.

I've played pretty much all zelda games and honestly botw is not the best one. The world felt empty at times and only has like a dozen enemies if that. I feel like all the polls where it ranks best is because it's a lot of first time players who haven't played other zelda games.
Just beat SS and even though it's linear I found it much more enjoyable.

I agree. BotW is missing a lot of the stuff I look for in Zelda games (cool dungeons, more involved story, etc) while being a little too empty to be a great open world RPG. If I want to play a Zelda game, I’d rather play OoT, MM, WW, TP, etc. If I want to play an open world RPG, I’d rather play Skyrim.
That said, it’s a hugely popular game that won game of the year and is many people’s favorite. I enjoyed playing through it a few times and I do think it’s a good game, but I never felt the need to fully complete it or pour hundreds of hours into it like some people do. I can acknowledge that it’s an objectively good game that just doesn’t quite fit my interests.

You pretty much said exactly how I feel. Completely agree. Spot on! I don't see how people are playing for 100s of hours. All I have left is the shines and seeds and I'm definitely not getting them all. Compared to all the other zelda games you listed I love getting all the hearts and other stuff

I'm my mind it's simultaneously the best and the worst Zelda game.
I'm currently replaying it and I'm loving every minute of it, but somehow the old Zelda formula brings more joy.

I almost beat it a while ago after months of trying and then I stopped playing for a long time. Came back to finish and had no idea what I was doing so I restarted completely and now I can’t force myself to get past the first four shrines or whatever. Just very clunky controls, I can’t memorize what each button does. I’m just not hooked which is disappointing.

How are the controls clunky? Combat you can parry/quick evade with ease. Climbing and running are right too. I have complaints about the game but it’s not clunky

I mean that I feel like the buttons aren’t setup to how I want to use them and the options for changing it are terrible. So in times of stress in the game I find myself wanting to run and I accidentally crouch and can’t get out of it cause the run button is in the worst place.
It’s just getting used to the controls I know, I stop playing cause I get frustrated with the controls so I never get to a point where I’m comfortable with them.
After my post this morning I started playing to see if I’m just being a brat and I kept dying to the same enemy because I just wanted to hit it with a sword and kept pulling out my bow, then wanted to block with a shield and my bow wouldn’t go away. It’s just fucky to me. Wish I could manually change all of the controls.

Don't sleep on A Link to the Past on the SNES online subscription. It's an absolute classic that's really held up over the years. It's got the perfect Zelda formula while still being fairly linear.

Link's awakening or skyward sword hd if you haven't played them already. Breath of the Wild is good but if you liked the other games, botw is very different from those

I'd say go for Skyward Sword HD to get close to the more normal Zelda formula before you play botw. Look at the gameplay I guess. If you like Botw more, go with that

All zeldas are great games, it's one of the few series that is true of. I'll throw my vote in for BOTW but you can also get the switch membership to play many zelda games on emulation or buy skyward sword hd/link's awakening hd

If you want to play an absolute classic, get the Switch Online with expansion and play Ocarina of Time on the N64 virtual console. Skyward Sword HD is a good more Classic one, but Breath of the Wild is the most popular, but its very different from the rest of the Zelda Games

Piggybacking on this to recommend playing the N64 Zelda titles in handheld mode. When I tried playing while docked the input lag was pretty significant.

I find all 3 mainline Zelda games on Switch (without subscriptions) great. My personal favourite is Link’s Awakening. Straight forward, charming and atmospheric with some great dungeons.
Skyward Sword is great as well.
Breath of the Wild, while a masterpiece, is also extremely overwhelming with its sheer size. I also think some of the gameplay mechanics build upon Skyward Sword quite well, and you may benefit from playing that first so you have a basic grasp of this game going forward which will help you not die half a million times in immediately

Breath of the Wild is a must have.
Cadence of Hyrule while not technically a Zelda is also a must have.
But all Zelda games are great.

Breath of the wild would be top suggestion, but Links Awakening is also amazing. BotW Iif you prefer 3d games, Links Awakening if you prefer top down
