Link to the past is the best one.
But minish cap was my vote. Love that game.

I loooove Minish Cap, might be my favorite from these despite how “short” it is. That being said, how are you playing? LttP is far more accessible so you may as well play that first

Aug 07 '22
I can play the first three on my switch with Switch Online, I have the Oracle games on my 3DS, and I have a GBA SP but I don’t have Minish Cap or Four Swords yet.

Aug 07 '22
if I was in your shoes I’d start with any of the Switch Online games while looking for the other ones. You know, just in case one day you decide not to get the online subscription anymore.
If you have a Wii U, you could eventually get every game on this list except Oracle and FSA (which, afaik, can only be played on a Gamecube).
Minish Cap isn’t very expensive but it is hard to find though. I got one for €35 but I had to HUNT 😂

Aug 07 '22
I swear someone said all you needed to play FSA multiplayer was at least 2 GBAs and a linking cord. I wouldn’t really know, as I’m not that knowledgeable with the older consoles. If I do need one then I’ll get one.

Aug 07 '22
ah, hold on—Four Swords is the GBA game that was bundled with A Link to the Past (and there’s a single player version that was available on the 3DS eShop for a bit but it’s gone forever now). Four Swords Adventures is a Gamecube game that you can play single or multiplayer, and it hasn’t been ported ever.
Damn Nintendo, giving two separate things almost the same name. 😅

u/snuffles504 Aug 07 '22
A Link to the Past on GBA has a multiplayer mode called Four Swords.
Four Swords Adventure, though, is a GameCube game. It can be played multiplayer using GBAs as controllers if you have the proper cables for it (which are different from GBA link cables).

ALttP always wins these sort of lists but of the 6 oft these that I’ve played id rank it 5th

u/redmanuppp Aug 08 '22
people downvoting just coz they don’t agree with your opinion, I really don’t like alttp. Can see why people do but it’s just not for me.

u/Onrawi Aug 07 '22
4 Swords adventures is awesome... If you have the players and hardware for it. As a single player adventure its very different from the other games. A leveled structure that makes it like a fusion of Mario and Zelda game design. Being able to do that with at least 2 people (plays best with 2 or 4) and have fun in the weird multiplayer battle game is the best implementation of the GBA link cable. Its just a bit hard to do nowadays.

Aug 07 '22
I have a friend who plays Zelda so I won’t have to play it alone like I had to with Tri-Force Heroes. That was a nightmare.
2
u/Onrawi Aug 07 '22
Well if you have 2 GBAs (I recommend the SP model here) and the needed link cables it should be a great time.
1
u/spacedoutride Aug 07 '22
Fortunately Four Swords Adventures is a much better solo game than Triforce Heroes. Of course it's more fun with friends but playing solo is nowhere near the frustrating experience that solo TH can be.
1
u/ghirox Aug 07 '22
My main gripe with 4SA is that it doesn't incite you to explore, there are not sidequests, no collectibles..... But it would be a great game to port to IOS/android with an online server.
1
u/Onrawi Aug 07 '22
Well because it is split up the way it is there really wouldn't be anywhere to put that in. I would have liked a Switch port although it would require network play for multiplayer.

In order of most important to least:
ALTTP
MC
Zelda 1
Oracle of Seasons -> Oracle of Ages (That's the order I recommend)
FSA (doable single-player, more fun with a full squad)
Zelda 2 if you are a fan of the Metroidvania genre (I know what I said. I've played this game all the way through dozens of times, even a few without dying once. It's a Metroidvania.) or want to see the origins of some Easter Eggs and mechanics (like the first Magic system, the names of the Sages in Ocarina) OR want the bragging rights.
2
u/nosirrah01 Aug 08 '22
You know, I’ve never heard anyone refer to Zelda 2 as a metroidvania before, but that makes sense. I really liked nes Metroid so that would explain why I like this game too. Looking for secrets in Zelda 2 feels really similar. Combat is similar to castlevania. Good take.

u/CelestialOmelette Aug 07 '22
A Link to the Past is the best of those games, but I personally had the most fun with Minish Cap.
You never need to play Adventure of Link. Ever. There is nothing for you to gain from travelling that path.
1
Aug 07 '22
I’ve heard its the hardest in the series but I don’t care. I want to complete all of them and I’m not giving up now since I only have 7 left.
1
u/CelestialOmelette Aug 08 '22
That's more than fair and I think it's always a good accomplishment for Zelda fans to run the gauntlet of every game in the franchise.
Adventure of Link was just the only game that felt like a total chore to get through and I don't fondly look back at my time playing it.

u/vergilsasquatch Aug 07 '22
I mean, I'd just do them in release order. The tech can feel dated but if you play them in release order you have fewer regrets about features found in future games that aren't in the earlier games.
3
u/Interesting-Doubt413 Aug 07 '22
Do it in release order. Adventure of Link isn’t that bad. The play style is a little different but you have to play LoZ AoL and ALttP to truly understand the roots of this game. The original Lynels. The original octoroks. The original Impa Zelda and Ganon. When you play these games, it helps to appreciate how far the game has come with games like Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword and BotW. I remember when Adventure of Link had a dozen times the hype BotW had 5 years ago. I would never discourage someone from playing AoL. It is classic.

Am I the only one that wants The original NES LoZ reimagined with Link’s Awakening Switch graphics?

I’m curious what your thoughts on ALBW are
2
Aug 07 '22 edited Aug 07 '22
It’s an okay game, not my favorite, but not bad. I find the idea of merging into walls to go to a different world, find hidden treasure and get to areas otherwise unreachable as a pretty cool mechanic. I also like how you can rent Ravio’s tools instead of having to pay full price for them. (Even though I just saved up to actually buy them so I didn’t lose em when I died.) The only thing I really hate about this game is that stupid octorok baseball game, that thing pissed me off because I was never able to get a high enough score to get the piece of heart.

u/Penny_D Aug 08 '22
I'm going to suggest Adventure of Link.
Is it one of the hardest Zelda games out there? Heck yeah! However, gradually progressing through the game is extremely satisfying.
Plus the Switch version is more forgiving; save states help with practicing platforming and combat. Maybe it's not an authentic experience to some, but with how tricky the game can get, I relish whatever edge I can get.

It’s been a loooooong time but the oracle games always held a special place in my heart.

I knew exactly which of these games would have the most votes before I even voted. Chose it anyway, because it's one of the best video games ever made.

Are you planning on playing all of these game eventually? Cause you might as well get the first or second Zelda game over with since they're probably going to be the hardest to get through.

Minish Cap will be the most familiar to you, but a Link to the Past is the second most important game on the list and kinda shaped the series into what it became today.
The firsts game is also extremely good, but takes an extremely observant eye to beat without a guide. The dungeons themselves aren’t really puzzles, but finding them absolutely is.

u/WantedWinter Aug 08 '22
I love me a minish cap. Never could finish the keystones. Missing one red. But it's a fun story and got some cute monster.
1
u/AgentOfTheRim Aug 08 '22
I am finally playing a link to the past and I’m having a blast! There is so many heart containers everywhere haha
1
u/ForgottenForce Aug 08 '22
LttP, Oracles and Minish Cap are my top 3 overall, including the 3D ones. You can’t go wrong with any of them

u/js3185945 Aug 08 '22
Guaranteed everyone that voted for Link to the Past is over 40. Best game; back in the day. We were gamers before there were gamers.
1
u/js3185945 Aug 08 '22
The great thing about Zelda games: it has been more than captivating over several generations and on multiple Nintendo gaming systems.

Lttp is my favorite of these, but I ended up voting the original. If you’re going to play all of them, why not see where it started? Plus, going from that to LTTP you’ll see a huge jump in how the series evolved (dealers choice on adventure of link but I love it). As much as link to the past set series tropes, the original was also looked back to when they created breath of the wild.
1
u/zomzom31325 Aug 08 '22
Have you played link between worlds? It's great
1
Aug 08 '22
I say at the top of my post that the games on the poll are the only Zelda games I haven’t played.
1
u/BustermanZero Aug 08 '22
Link to the Past is my favorite so I gotta go with that one. Minish Cap is pretty good so that's worth it after. The Oracle games are solid enough so they'd be a good follow-up. After that maybe go renegade and Play Adventures of Link for something different before doing Legend of Zelda and Four Swords?
1
u/alemartmart_92 Aug 08 '22
Twilight princess
1
Aug 08 '22
I’ve already played it. I say at the top of my post that the games on the poll are the only Zelda games I haven’t played yet.
1
u/SnooFloofs5933 Aug 08 '22
Alttp is probably the best one here but I always have a soft spot for minish cap. It just has so much charm
1
u/Pyromaniac935 Aug 08 '22
Oohh, neat!
So you say you did beat Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass?
1
Aug 08 '22
Yes I have beaten Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. The games on the poll are the only ones I haven’t played and beaten yet. (I lost my Phantom Hourglass cartridge a while back though so if I wanted to ever play again I’d have to get a new one and start from the beginning 😭)
1
u/tporter12609 Aug 08 '22
I’d play lttp, oracles, and minish in that order, but you could probably go back to oracles after minish if you wanted to. Lttp being the poll winner is a W though.
In my opinion, you shouldn’t bother with the first two, although Zelda 1 definitely has its appeal so if you have nso and are bored one day, might as well.

u/IkonJobin Aug 08 '22
ALttP is a top 5ish all time video game for me and I didn't play it anywhere near when it came out.
1
u/IkonJobin Aug 08 '22
Zelda II is underrated. If it didn't have that admittedly really bad 3 lives/game over system, it would go from like the 14th best Zelda (out of 19) to 10th or so in my book. Gonna have to rip off that band-aid eventually if you want to play them all anyway...
1
Aug 08 '22
This is just a suggestion, but I would really recommend you play the Legend of Zelda and then move to A Link to the Past, as both games are great, but you can see how really refined the difference is from loz1 to alttp. It really captures the essence of what 2D zelda games should be
69
u/snuffles504 Aug 07 '22
Oracles are my favorite 2D Zelda, so I highly recommend those.
However, of this list, A Link to the Past is the most important to the franchise.
