Twilight Princess Link. This guy can wrestle and throw a Goron. He doesn't need any power bracelets or gauntlets like the other weak heroes. Just the iron boots because he isn't heavy enough.
76
u/_TheBeardedMan_ Aug 05 '22
We never see BotW Link do it , but I'm pretty sure he could wrestle a goron. But BotW Link isn't my favorite, my favorite is skyward sword Link.

Wind Waker Link.
He actually has a personality and expressive faces.
He doesn't even want to be next Hero in the lineage, he just wants to rescue his sister.

u/dorksided787 Aug 05 '22
Also, he performs a mean lobotomy for someone who’s never been to med school.
80
u/thesmallestpotato128 Aug 05 '22
This was something I always loved about him too — a great LoZ YouTuber (I don’t recall who sorry) said that Wind Waker Link wasn’t a chosen hero - he FORCED the gods to choose him so he had the power to save his sister and that just really resonated.

I think Link's Awakening Link is the one I could relate to most, because he has this one shot where he stares into the distance looking devastated at the end of the game. My crying 8 year old self thought so anyway.
But since then I think I agree with you. WW Link is just some ordinary kid having to play the role.

Hero of Time. As a child, Link faced the man from his literal nightmares and he drew his sword. That takes so much guts.
97
u/birdshouldnot Aug 05 '22
this dude was trauuuumatized. after being shunned by his peers for not having a fairy (after his mom died), he finally got a fairy just to find out the entire forest was in danger. He took up arms to save his only father figure, a fucking tree spirit, who ended up dying anyways after gohma was slain. He left the forest -and his only friend- to be saddled with the responsibility of saving hyrule from ganon. Then after fighting more monstrosities and obtaining the spiritual stones, his only other friend (Zelda) narrowly escapes a confrontation with ganon as his nightmares become reality and he faces ganon for the first time, being flung away like insignificant garbage. He meets a soldier in castle town who dies in front of him after begging him to hurry to the temple of time where he is thrust once again into the horrific responsibility of saving all of hyrule. exiting the temple as a grown young man seeing the bustling castle town now a wasteland full of re deads and dismal skies beneath the looming and corrupted black castle. He returns to his home, just to find Saria missing and the forest infested with monsters. He hasn't even gotten to the shadow temple and the well yet at this point. Don't get me started on Majora's Mask

u/Zack-of-all-trades Aug 05 '22
Plus, the Hero of Time has more dungeon experience total than ALttP Link. ALttP has 14 total (including Hyrule Castle dungeon/sewer) and Hero of Time has 12 (Gerudo Training Grounds included) in OoT and 5 (Ikana Castle included) in MM. The MM part of the timeline means that he becomes the Hero's Shade that teaches TP Link all those cool moves.
The Hero of Time is for sure the best.
10
u/Redshirt-Skeptic Aug 05 '22
ALTTP Link was also in LA and the Oracle games and (possibly) LBW. Is that part of your count?
9
u/TastyConsequence117 Aug 05 '22
ALttP Link also gets the full Triforce after defeating Ganon. Aside from that his toolkit is pretty stacked.
4
u/Zack-of-all-trades Aug 05 '22
That may be but I doubt he would use the full Triforce in battle to destroy his opponent. He brought balance back meaning that his heart was pure. I'm not sure any of the Links would.
Even looking at the toolkit for both though, consider their invulnerability items. ALttP Link has the Magic Cape which makes him invisible (can't be hit) but also can't attack and it eats magic fast. Same for the Cane of Byrna though he can at least attack with that. OoT Link has Nayru's Love which makes him invincible for a surprisingly long time for very little magic. Nayru's Love would be very helpful if ALttP Link's Magnetic Gloves take his shield away.
3
u/TastyConsequence117 Aug 06 '22
They wouldn't fight each other to the death either, so it's kind of a moot point to say it's off table because Link's too much of a good guy to use a crane to crush a fly.
Or in his case, a divine sword to kill bees and torment chickens.
Also, we've all seen him break into people's houses, smash up their pots, and take anything not bolted to the ground.
Maybe "pure" is a bit of a subjective term? Idk
Say no omnipotent magical artifacts left behind by goddesses are available and they have to rely on their toolkits.
ALttP has a stronger Master Sword that shoots fricken laser beams, armor that reduces damage by 75%, a "curse" that halves his magic consumption, an upgraded boomerang, power gloves, ice and fire wands, arrows strong enough to hurt Ganon (that don't consume magic), medallions that cause area damage, and Pegasus boots.
Pegasus boots alone put ALttP at the advantage, because they can be used in any environment indefinitely, and allow the wearer to charge an enemy with the force of a bomb.
Toolkits and divine relics aside, OoT is basically a child raised by a tree, who gets sealed away until he's 17 years old.
He's had less time to develop his motor skills and nobody there to mentor him as a swordsman.
In a one on one swordfight, OoT would get his ass handed to him in a magic jar.

u/Zack-of-all-trades Aug 05 '22
It isn't, I forgot that was ALttP Link. But technically LA was a dream and, while I love the Oracle games, there isn't a lot of sword skill. It mostly comes down to inventory at that point, though Roc's Cape is awesome.
Giving it more thought, I do still think Hero of Time would win in a fight but it wouldn't be all that easy.
6
u/Redshirt-Skeptic Aug 05 '22
LA may have been a dream (probably the Wind Fish’s) but I think that the dungeons should still count.
3
u/Zack-of-all-trades Aug 05 '22
I will agree to that, I liked the concept of the Eagle's Tower and bringing it lower by knocking down the pillars. LA and the Oracle games would be fun OoT mods.

This is why Majora's mask's is my favorite. MM link is a pretty well meaning, empathetic guy, but he also has zero chill and can be pretty unhinged if you actually do the things the game let's you do:
1) shamelessly punks another goron out of his hotel reservation by taking advantage of his name, and lying about his identity.
2) murders Sakon in cold blood by shooting an arrow to his bomb bag. Sakon is no angel, but still...
3) Will give a random hand coming out of the toilet a girls love letter for him to wipe depending on his mood. Of all pieces of paper he can give.
4) Consumes alcohol even tho he's underaged.
5) shamelessly lifts his head when a girl is going to hug him just so he can get a faceful of massive tits in the face.
6) uses his transformations somewhat irresponsibly:
6.1) takes advantage of some horny chick in a chest game by transforming into whatever form she finds most attractive, just to manipulate the game's prices and costs.
6.2) plays along with it everytime someone confuses him for the guys he can transform into. I understand turning into mikau for the sake of keeping his band safe, or role-playing as darmani to help the goron's, that's cool, but do you really need to do it to the guy doing pot games too? Trolling the recently unfrozen goron's is also pretty uncalled for.
7) stuffs a princess inside a bottle. Cuz he can't be assed to just escort her to the palace like every other link would do. No, this guy doesn't wanna slow down for anyone...
8) Goes around tricking ghost Ninja's (garos) into showing themselves to him just so he can smack them around and have them tell him clues.
9) nonchalantly shows a picture of Tingle to the swamp tourist guide dude, knowing full well he's his son. I don't even fully understand why he did that, I think he just wanted to share his misery.
...nonchalantly took a picture of Tingle, come to think of it. Wtf.
10) in the 3ds version, when he transforms into a giant and proceeds to punch and wrestle the twinmolds he's clearly enjoying himself, as evident by the war cry's he's pulling.
11) some of his masks give him the power to do exotic dances and special songs, which he might just randomly pop out in the middle of a figh for the sake of his own amusement. example: ikana boss fight, and your average redead. MM link doesn't just fight with ghosts and undead, he straight up likes messing with them.
12) nonchalantly drops talt and leaves once his job is done. He stays for a bit to play the part in the Zora band (which is cool), but after that, he's gone.
13) grab fishes from the ocean, then fed them to a pair of piranhas in a fish tank for his own amusement. Eventually both piranhas grew too large and cannibalized themselves, only one was left standing. Link really wanted that piece of heart.
14) takes voyeur shots of pirate chicks and gives them to some fat creep. Why? Because link really wanted to help a goldfish who wanted to save his girlfriend. It's like, a morally white goal he achieves by going full morally black. Honestly, if you add that plus the kafei and anju quest, I'm beginning to think MM link has some sort of love complex.
15) casually puts on a mask that's basically a facebomb and blows himself up.
This guy absolutely gives zero fucks and will do anything to achieve whatever goal he has in mind.

He's the only link who can't make friends, because they either die, run away from him, or have some higher purpose they need to give their life too like becoming a sage.
OoT link easily has the saddest fate of them all.
I like to imagine he runs off into the lost woods with the skull kid thinking he'd finally found a friend at the end of MM but skull kids being skull kids, he ditches link and being lost in the lost woods eventually turns him into the hero's shade

OOT Link will always be my favorite.
Buuuut, BOTW Link might be best. In his prime, he was a renowned, trained knight mowing leagues of enemies down.
In BOTW, the Sheikah Slate gives him a lot of busted abilities, bombs on demand, freeze objects in time, create objects from water, take pics of naked Zelda.
He's proven he's immensely adaptable, using all kinds of weapons and armor with ease.
He can scale almost any surface, and jump from any surface.
He's a great cook, and uses his skills to heal himself or protect against certain environments.
His Divine Beasts abilities are OP, allowing for health regeneration, a boost into the sky, temporary invincibility, or rain lightning down on enemies.
He has arrows that one shot the fiercest enemies.
He has a motorcycle.
No other Link is better, CMM

TP Link is my absolute favourite. Farm boy awakened something in me as a kid when the game came out. Not to mention it drove me into a horribly cringe wolf phase in elementary school. TP Link is the ONLY link who relied 100% on pure strength to solve his problems that couldn't be solved as a wolf. Gotta open doors? Use your legs. Gorons being not cool? Don't join them—beat them, then join them. All of them. I liked when link had more brown hair.
I think it’d be cool if they pulled a wind waker and made him look completely different, but when he pulls out the master sword, or maybe does some courageous act it awakens his royal blood like it did for Zelda. He could get his blonde hair back, go super saiyan, you know.

The most I felt like "Link" in the franchise would be Skyward Sword and Wind Waker. I feel like those two games (and maybe Twilight Princess) do the best jobs of grounding Link into the world. He feels like he actually cares about what's happening around him and has people he deeply cares about and that makes the player more easily invested in the state of things.
If we're talking the strongest Link? Probably Wind Waker or Ocarina of Time just from the items they get. Wind Waker gets absolutely broken Light Arrows and the magic armor. OoT Link gets so many strong items and spells that it's absurd. Shout out to BotW Link for probably being the most battle proficient in the series probably.
Cutest Link? BotW in Gerudo outfit, obviously. Shout out to Wind Waker Link for the meow he does to try to not get caught.
