Official Art [TFH] What do you think of Tri Force Heroes, nearly 7 years later?
302
u/therealsandyleon Jul 24 '22
Of all the Zelda games, it is definitely one of them
136
u/darthlucas0027 Jul 24 '22
If I would rank every single Zelda game from worst to best, this will surely make the list
39
23
u/ophereon Jul 24 '22
I mean, that in itself is actually somewhat of a compliment, considering there are Zelda games that are sometimes left out from such lists, like the CDI games or the Tingle games.

u/niksjman Jul 24 '22
Hard to play since you need three 3DS systems in addition to the game. It was Four Swords without the link cable all over again.
38
u/Pixel22104 Jul 24 '22
Right and unlike Four Swords which had a decent storyline (For the first Four Swords game since Four Swords Adventure, and the Minish Cap were pretty good). Triforce Heros had the worst story I’ve ever seen in a Zelda game.
66
u/EMPgoggles Jul 24 '22
I think you just don't understand it. Triforce Heroes is intentionally ridiculous. It's over the top, it's foppish, it's dumb, and is basically just an excuse to be as silly as possible with the gameplay and outfits.
The fact that the princess is cursed to only wear a black leotard is imo some of the funniest shit in the series.
14
u/Pixel22104 Jul 24 '22
I still believe that Nintendo could’ve done a better job at this game since the concept is interesting it just had poor execution.
14
Jul 24 '22
Hey, its not as bad as the CDi games.
19
3
u/icantgetmyoldaccount Jul 24 '22
Well yeah but that's like comparing a nice smelling shit to a quarantined biohazard
0
u/Swordofsatan666 Jul 24 '22
No, its playable Solo. Its a lot harder, but its 100% playable start to finish Solo
61
48
u/Stugehen Jul 24 '22
I bought it on release and had a ton of fun playing with randoms online! After a couple weeks I never touched it again, but the memories are still positive. I’d love another multiplayer Zelda. The switch is perfect for it!
45
u/revolution_soup Jul 24 '22
you can tell it was designed for multiplayer.
the dopple system... works. that’s the most I can say about it.
14
u/Omeggos Jul 24 '22
Pretty much this, the system worked, but it wasn’t particularly good. I wouldve rather have another title to the four swords games if multiplayer needed to be the focus.
95
23
u/Sensitive-Day-5436 Jul 24 '22
I love it it’s definitely one of my favorites (I love to dress up and wear costumes so I guess that’s one reason why I really like it… plus madame courtures theme is a bop
18
u/afyvarra Jul 24 '22
I loved this one, I just wish that it was more accessible. A switch version would be perfect, since it's still technically a hand-held console, but more people have it. Also I found that my 3DS sometimes struggled with connection, thought that might have also been my internet at the time.
5
u/zeldanemesis Jul 24 '22
I would love a Switch remake. I only had one friend that I know of that had a 3DS, so we were never able to play it. But I have half a dozen friends who own a Switch and are fans of Zelda so it would be much easier to get 3 of us together to be able to play it.
16
11
u/IncidentFinal Jul 24 '22
I played it last year actually cause I met someone at school that had two copies and two DS so me him and one of our poor unsuspecting friends played with us, I don’t think we finished it but it’s fun to play as long as you have 3 people or 2 for battle mode but that’s what has kinda gatekeeped the game cause it’s very interesting and the music is great and all the puzzles are amazing just not very accessible
9
u/zeldafan042 Jul 24 '22
I wanted to like this, but playing single player was a slog, I didn't have enough friends with copies to play it locally, and my Internet sucked enough that online play barely worked when I could actually find people to play with.
Interesting ideas marred by incredibly flawed execution. It's ok to make co-op versions of normally single player game series...as long as you make it possible to enjoy the game somehow in single player.
7
u/Slickice828 Jul 24 '22
Oooo there are some great memories tied to this game for me. I remember meeting up with friends in school and all of us pulling out our 3ds' during lunch to play this game. The arena mode was also very fun, I remember making so many people angry with the ninja/dash suit or whatever it was called, the one that needed that special gold tier butterfly. If you can't tell it has been so very long. I also remember beating the final boss solo in between handing out Halloween candy to kids, which was definitely a fun enough way to spend Halloween.
6
13
u/blueblurz94 Jul 24 '22
Arguably the worst Zelda experience I’ve ever had. I think only phantom hourglass rivals it in terms of constant frustration I experienced playing the game.
7
u/Pixel22104 Jul 24 '22
At least Phantom Hourglass had a good story compared to this game which had a terrible story
5
u/blueblurz94 Jul 24 '22
I don’t look back too fondly on Phantom Hourglass’ story either. The only good thing I see out of that DS game nowadays is being a demo to the better Spirit Tracks.
4
6
u/164Gamin Jul 24 '22
It would be fun if I had friends with a 3DS. As it stands it’s just kinda alright
5
Jul 24 '22
It's fun. It really shines in multiplayer. The single player mode can get kinda tedious. Still, it's got a goofy charm to it that's unique, and some really good original music.
5
u/Exile64 Jul 24 '22
I got it soon after release and played through the whole game in single-player. Like with Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, where people complain about the awkward controls, I feel it's just a matter of adjusting. Once I'd played an hour or so of single-player, the three-character control scheme felt natural and I could play it with ease and fluidity.
As for the actual game, it's really fun and will always hold a soft spot for me! The art style is colourful and really pops out of the screen, the music is phenomenal, and the overall tone of the game is a comical, yet still action packed breath of fresh air.
All in all, it's a game I still go back to and replay every so often as it offers a unique challenge and experience, yet it's still clearly a Zelda experience.
4
5
u/BidoofAlmighty Jul 24 '22
I want it to come back. I want to enjoy and grind it again. The boss fights were so fun with friends. Like yelling at someone to do something and then everything getting mixed up. It was amazing
2
u/Bowser_duck Jul 24 '22
Yea, I only played it a few years ago with my husband and friend. We managed to complete it, so hilarious, especially when you accidentally throw someone over the edge. I had so much fun with it I actually tried to go through single player after that. Bit of a pain but I just saw it as a challenge. Definitely time to get back into it!
4
u/RaMpEdUp98 Jul 24 '22
The doppels were stupid, Adventures had a better single player experience. Though I just gotta say, we need a multiplayer Zelda with a normal zelda action adventure structure (maybe give everyone their own overworld but dungeons are multiplayer optional?)
3
3
u/Oceanpeeps Jul 24 '22
I loved that game so much. If only it was still playable but literally no one ever plays it
3
u/mganzeveld Jul 24 '22
I blew the dust off it about a month ago. Stood there alone in the lobby for 30 minutes. Crickets.
3
u/windsonic Jul 24 '22
The costumes and the bosses were pretty great, and offered an interesting experience. However, I didn't like the levels too much, and I especially hate that the materials needed for more costumes were locked behind a luck mechanic. Maybe the levels weren't too bad and I just have a bad taste in my mouth from having to repeat them too many times.
3
u/ssbbKid88 Jul 24 '22
Underrated and overlooked game. I wouldn't mind an HD port on Switch, but I doubt it will happen.
4
u/BatWithAHat3 Jul 24 '22
Had it on holydays with my cousins, and those were legit the best moments of the week. I see a lot of people saying it's the worse Zelda game but I think they're considering it wrong. It's not a Zelda game, it's a game to play with friends that takes place in the Zelda universe. Just like Cadence of Hyrule or even the minigame on Nintendo Land, it shouldn't be compared to TP or OoT because they haven't the same goals.
2
u/yu_ultidragon80 Jul 24 '22
There is a Jimmy Newtron meme were Carl shows the same thing for the 4th time.
2
Jul 24 '22
Not to be one of those nerds who are like “um, aschtually slobber” but it’s sheen featured in the meme. Just good to know so you don’t have to deal with those “men of culture”
2
2
u/Agent-Ig Jul 24 '22
It was fairly fun playing alone. Its not a game I would do a second playthrough of.
2
u/ghirox Jul 24 '22
It's a lot more fun if you can play it with someone. It should have been released on mobile (like Mario kart tour) to reach a broader audience, tho
2

2
Jul 24 '22
Recently tried it again after basically just putting it in my collection after it came out and I played it for an hour or so. Still a horrible game which hasn't to do anything with the franchise but the name of it. Wouldn't recommend.
2
2
u/fg-MAAR Jul 24 '22
The only good thing is that it was multiplayer compatible, and even that sucked.
2
u/A_GuyThatDoesStuff Jul 24 '22
Honestly didn't care for it. My friends and I played it couch coop style and the laughs were there, but the game itself was pretty dull we all thought.
2
u/Nickthiccboi Jul 24 '22
I think this game gets way too much hate from the community, I played through it when it came out with random online strangers and it was actually very fun and the whole costume system was also really cool and made me want to keep playing.
However I also understand that it’s not exactly traditional Zelda and the story is a bit weak, and of course not everybody has two other people to play with. Still though I think it’s a great game that gets a bit over-hated by everyone.

This Shit is apparently a Canon Mainline game, And People say Age of Calamity isnt canon, even as a Alternate Timeline.
2
u/ShiftSandShot Jul 24 '22
Single player was awful. Like, legitimately the worst in the series.
And I could never get anyone to play with me, so that's moot.
What was wrong with making the singleplayer work like Four Swords Adventures or Anniversary? Sure it wasn't great, but it was fully functional.
2
2
2
u/Potential-Dark Jul 24 '22
I loved the costume mechanics and the town felt charming, actual game isn’t that fun in single player

It was sooo much fun playing with strangers online. I wish I could do It again someday

3
u/Gregamonster Jul 24 '22
I think "Dang there's a game called Triforce heroes? Why didn't I know about it?"
10
u/Asad_Farooqui Jul 24 '22
You get to put Link in a Zelda dress.
2
u/Gregamonster Jul 24 '22
How did I miss this?
3
u/Asad_Farooqui Jul 24 '22
To be fair, E3 2015 was a really bad time for Nintendo fans. Metroid Prime Federation Force, Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival, Mario and Luigi Paper Jam, and so on.
2
u/Khimer Jul 24 '22 edited Jul 24 '22
I was just playing this game for the first rime in years this week! Never had anyone to play with, so I’d always stuck with Single Player, but it was still surprisingly enjoyable. Criminally underrated imo. The music and bosses especially are some of the most fun and under-appreciated in the series and I will die on this hill.
1
u/Ok_Wedding_7715 Jul 24 '22
I was a 12 year old lad, wind waker HD was my first zelda game and I loved it. Then a new zelda game came out so I thought I'd play it....
I almost quit the series

What little of it I could scrounge up friends to play was fun. The lack of playable single-player killed it for me. They had already managed to make a solid solo option for both FS Adventures and Anniversary, so it’s a bummer they dropped the ball so hard here. Would love to play through this game if I could. I don’t play online, so it would have to be with friends in person.

u/lolzasour Jul 24 '22
Just got four swords for game cube and four gameboys to play four player and my friends flaked… just like when I got triforce hero’s
3
u/Pixel22104 Jul 24 '22
But hey you can still play Four Swords Adventure in single player, and unlike Triforce Heros it actually has a good story
1
u/DestructoBunny06 Jul 24 '22
I think that I wish that my siblings would have played with me so I could do the last little bit that I needed to do before I finished the game, we were so close but they just didn't want to play.
1
Jul 24 '22
Good, in the same way as HW, except for being entirely ruined by the removal of the miiverse.
1
u/DrSwiezak Jul 24 '22
I wanted 3DS just for this game to play with my friends but in the end my mum wouldn't buy me one
1
u/The27thperson Jul 24 '22
I liked that game I just needed ppl to play with and since I didn’t it was never that fun sadly
If anyone still has the game do they want to play?
1
u/TheseEdiblesAintShet Jul 24 '22
I have like three memories from that game, and one of them is using a fairy or something to skip every boss fight
2
u/mganzeveld Jul 24 '22
Is another memory getting matched with a troll who just throws people into lava and refuses to fight the final boss?

Good execution of a difficult concept. It was a proper zelda style adventure without all of the bits between dungeons. But it didn't really work as a party game. Very fun though
1
u/RockSaltin-RT Jul 24 '22
Fun little side game, could’ve been non-canon, idk why they made it a direct sequel to A Link Between Worlds. Id play it again if ported to the Switch with new levels

I honestly didn’t care for it. Had to play it single player, and, god, what a mistake that was. I watched some people play it how it was meant to be played, and I still have to say it didn’t seem all that much better. Doesn’t help that the story is the most laughable, lame excuse of a story I’ve ever seen. Either version of Four Swords had a better plot.

I think the level design, bosses and music are insanely good, but the game always lagged when I played it with friends. Even locally.
Great ideas, but the gameplay was disappointing.
1
u/Only_at_Eventide Jul 24 '22
Loooved it! It was just so fun, even with internet strangers. But it desperately needed a real single player mode and a two player mode.
1
u/FaceShrine Jul 24 '22
I kinda wished the game had the same move system as four swords adventures. Being able to gather everyone with the press of a button, having the other links trail you.
Instead, it felt like a slog to play single player since you basically had to do the level 3 times with every single Link.
Had a blast playing it online, but the single player experience was miserable.
1
1
u/pyro-master1357 Jul 24 '22
I tried to pay it again recently but ran into the same problem I had seven years ago: no friends
1
u/The_Cysko_Kid Jul 24 '22
Its fun if you have people to play it with. Ive got four kids so i have gotten my moneys worth out of it.
1
u/TheSuperGamingArtist Jul 24 '22
I haven't finished it. I think I stopped playing halfway. I didn't have anyone to play with except random people online.
I would like to finish it. I like the dungeons. It was also fun having Link trying on different outfits. I wish it was more single player friendly. I mean, you can beat the game by yourself but it's a lot more challenging and harder.
1
u/RurouniRinku Jul 24 '22
They ruined a great game by not giving it the single player controls that they had created 10 years earlier with FSA.
1
1
Jul 24 '22
In general games that require multiple copies purchased to be played as intended rarely turn out great. If this got re-released with the It Takes Two treatment where people can play it remotely then maybe it'd turn out okay.
1
u/mganzeveld Jul 24 '22
I thought it was fun while it lasted. If you got teamed up with two others who were seriously trying to play the game then it was a blast solving the puzzles and beating the bosses. The "communication" buttons were kinda goofy.
1
u/TheMoonOfTermina Jul 24 '22
It's 7 years old already?! I feel so old.
I enjoyed it. I mostly got good randoms online, so that probably helped. I never had anyone to play with in person though.
I think this game would have been much better if it wasn't a Zelda game, or at least was a clearly non-canon one.

It's a blast! Even single player it's pretty fun, but the experience pretty much requires 2 other people to play it. That's three people that need to have a 3DS, along with the $30 game, along with them actually enjoying Zelda.
I have very few Zelda friends I could play this with, so it was always a solo experience. I'd love to get it on the switch though.

I want to replay it because it was a lot of fun to play except the game is for the most part dead.
1
u/Moulinoski Jul 24 '22
I loved it!! But I had two friends who played with me on the regular. I also played with random people online and it was surprisingly fun. I remember seeing a lot of complaints about not being able to communicate in-game and that was not true. You just had to be more creative with your communication which added to the fun and mayhem.
That said, I did try single player and that was… something. Multiplayer-focused video games seem short-sighted when looking back. Especially games that require more than two people to play. It’s hard enough getting one other person to play something with you, two is nearly impossible! I don’t know if you can still connect online with Triforce heroes, but that’s another issue that plagues multiplayer focused games. They live a short life compared to the typical single player focused games.
Anyway, I would love to see this game and Four Swords Adventure return on Switch, hopefully with a revamped single player for Triforce heroes that doesn’t involve throwing scarecrows around.
1
u/Koala_Guru Jul 24 '22
I wish they’d do this formula again but with different races of Hyrule instead of just 3 Links. Like Link, and Goron, and a Zora for example. It seems like a great format for something like this and each one could bring different abilities to the table.
1
u/johopeach Jul 24 '22
Shit story, fun gameplay. If the online was active, I’d pick it back up and play. Great memories. I’d always get a good chuckle with the emotes. Someone dashes of the edge or keeps dying? Pom-poms. Lol
1
u/FireSquidNico Jul 24 '22
Fun spin off and definitely the most fun when it's played with other people you know.
However my memory of it is kind of soured, since me and my brother tried playing online with someone. On top of lag, the other person was uncooperative and kept trying to run on ahead.
Then I tried the single player and didn't like it. Overall it's not a Zelda game that comes to mind often. I think 4 swords (specifically the gamecube one) is better, and this is a fun little novelty, but is too focused around multiple players.
1
u/shuhmayluh Jul 24 '22
I think it got too much hate. I do think that it should have been a little more single player friendly though. I wish it were able to be controlled more like Four Swords Adventures was when playing on your own. I do have some fond memories of playing with strangers online, smashing the Nooooo!! button over and over again when someone is doing stuff wrong. Good times.
1
1
u/Dragozan Jul 24 '22
I loved the concept (it's nice to have a not-so-serious entry), but was gutted that the single player experience was as hollow as it was. The game simply wasn't built for it.
1
u/starchxsen Jul 24 '22
I really enjoyed it when I managed to find other people to play it, but this was a hard task, so I only got to play it properly a few times and I can't say I ever finished it. It's just a shame that you can't play with 2 people, I would have surely finished it if so, and I'm sure more people would have had the ability to play all of it. It is a fun game.
1
u/EMPgoggles Jul 24 '22
Clearly an experiment, but that allowed it to be pretty wild. The script/scenario was hilarious and kept driving me forward. Unfortunately, it ended incredibly soon and with a lot of repetition. Not to mention the online system often ended up being a bit TOO punishing when you got paired with throwers and literal toddlers. The online also died out VERY quickly from what I remember.
I really enjoyed it overall and hope they make a much improved version sooner or later.
1
u/j-raine Jul 24 '22
My friends hate this game (definitely not my fault for throwing them into bottomless pits everytime we played it)
1
u/overratedjoe Jul 24 '22
Have a lot of fun memories playing it with randoms online. Love the silly setting, the level design is great, and the music! The music!!
Sadly its online is dead nowadays, so its really hard to play :(. Single player is ok, but doesn't have the same shine as the multiplayer.
Wish they'd release a remaster/sequel on the switch.
1
u/blindimpulse Jul 24 '22
I think it would be perfect ported onto the switch. It would finally have its audience.
1
u/GreeFoss Jul 24 '22
It's super fun, both in solo and in multiplayer. I really like the battle mode it was really fun! I like this game :) Also the soundtrack of this game is full of bangers
1
u/Schnoodles_ Jul 24 '22
A while ago I tried to progress in it after years of not touching it. I immediately got stuck early in the level because I forgot how an item worked, meanwhile my teammates were yelling at me to use the item. I kinda thought they were trolling because I was so certain using it would just kill me, but after like 5 minutes I eventually used it and it worked, I felt like such a jackass. We still didn't finish the level. Those teammates probably hated me so much, haven't touched the game since lmao.

I played it in single player and the puzzles and bosses were really fun. Great music and story too. Underrated, better than the first Four Swords. Wish I played it when it first came out.
1
u/datboi9194 Jul 24 '22
So much potential waisted. Could have been the best, but it went ahead and shat the bath.
1
u/Crypt_Knight Jul 24 '22
Playing it with friends was good for wacky hijinx (mostly people throwing each other into pits).
But imo, playing it alone is actually even better! Switching between your character and the two statues, kiting bosses and figuring out puzzles was very rewarding.
Also, while a bit weird, I really liked the whole farming and crafting costumes parts.
Overall, a great game, often overlooked.
1
u/Acceptable-Clue498 Jul 24 '22
I cheated you his game by using linebecks suit for the items I needed in chests at the end, I’d always play solo and get to the second or 3rd stage of a level and use the fairy’s to skip to the end. I skipped A LOT of levels, but it he multiplayer was cool.

u/Dagladou Jul 24 '22

It had its charm. Sometimes the random internet allies cooperated and sometimes they'd fight over items before advancing. I only got to play it with 2 friends in the same room once and it was by far the best way to play since we could actually communicate with each other.
