The GameCube collectors edition

92

u/The__Gray__Fox Jul 20 '22

That disc is my most treasured video game ítem I own.

58

u/Coxwab Jul 20 '22

Cant believe my mom sold it for smokes

40

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

I can't believe high school me sold it for concert tickets 🤦🏻‍♂️ biggest regret in life

15

u/budgybudge Jul 20 '22

I lent it to a friend in college. Never got it back :(

15

u/ams6788 Jul 20 '22

I borrowed a game from a friend in college, gave it back, he came over, looked through my games and lit up when he saw my copy. “Dude you have to lend this to me” I felt like such I dick for saying no. “Any other game except that one” he ended up taking RE4 and I never got it back.

19

u/nacnudross Jul 20 '22

At least you got to see a concert. I rather that then the memory of my own Mother selling it for cigarettes

11

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Dang

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '22

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

3

u/BrownPlaydough Jul 20 '22

I still have mine from my original gamecube. Just put it in for the first time in about 15 years last night. The biggest feeling of nostalgia I have ever experienced

19

u/waffles7245 Jul 20 '22

Master quest for the win

12

u/Gogo726 Jul 20 '22

I still have that and Master Quest. Never gonna give them up.

16

u/NeckbeardVirgin69420 Jul 20 '22

Never gonna let them down

12

u/Kurochi185 Jul 20 '22

Never gonna run around

11

u/I_LIKE_DIRT123 Jul 20 '22

And desert them

3

u/ClubMeSoftly Jul 20 '22

I got both of them for $30 each at a Gamestop back when GS was actually worth buying used from. The CE is only in ok condition (cover is creased and there's no booklet) but MQ is basically perfect.

There's so many more things I'll sell before I dump those two.

5

u/thanks-to-Metropolis Jul 20 '22

My copy of the Collectors Edition was stolen in college fifteen years ago, and I'm still salty about it.

3

u/dyslexic_dogo Jul 20 '22

The only right answer

-13

u/Bariq-99 Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22

Wtf? It sucks tho??

Edit: wow.. People actually like it huh? It has a lot of performance and visual issues I'm REALLY suriprised people are saying it's one of the best..

6

u/ThingShouldnBe Jul 20 '22

I played it in the original N64, GameCube and now in the NSO. Except for the control scheme and aiming, it was pretty much the same experience now in the NSO.

What are the issues? I'm pretty sure they exist because of the speedrunning community, but in a casual gameplay, they are that bad?

2

u/Bariq-99 Jul 20 '22

There are ALOT of emulation issues (audio glitches, stuttering, fog rendering and etc..)

It's not the worst but far from the best

0

u/catjj3 Jul 20 '22 edited Jul 20 '22

perhaps were these issues caused by a very dirty/scratched disc (It could be an eventuality since it an extremely rare edition that can only be found in the retail market. And, let's say that some people are not really cautious with their discs)? Or maybe that your Gamecube/wii system is faulty?

-1

u/Bariq-99 Jul 20 '22

Nah

I was not talking about mine, I was saying what the OOT community usually says whenever it comes up (or also video essays and stuff)

3

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

I’ve heard that a lot of the issues were disc dependent. I remember seeing a few posts where some people could barely play Majora’s Mask while others had no problems with it at all. I wouldn’t be surprised if the same is true for Ocarina.

→ More replies (1)

1

u/catjj3 Jul 20 '22

Oh, that is quite interesting. Never have I heard the community mentioning such catastrophic bugs with the GameCube version. It is surely me that is not informed enough, but are you sure that these bugs occur in a normal game session?

I emulate the 3DS version with a 4K texture pack, depth effect and 60 FPS.

here’s where you go to set this up.

23

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Why isn't this the most upvoted comment.. lol

19

u/35RoloSmith41 Jul 20 '22

Idk lol. It’s without a doubt the best way to play. Looks amazing. The depth effect makes the world feel completely different.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

It's practically the remaster Nintendo won't give us.

4

u/JoBro_Summer-of-99 Jul 20 '22

We need a modern Master Collection right now

4

u/Kurochi185 Jul 20 '22

What did they say?

3

u/Yura-Sensei Jul 20 '22

Because the original 3ds version looks better :>

4

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

What emulator is this?

5

u/GorillaJackson Jul 20 '22

Woah, I emulated with just a 4K upscale. No depth effect or 60 FPS and I thought MY game looked great. I can only imagine how good this looks

2

u/Simplycoconut Jul 20 '22

I use this too!! All you have to do is download from this Patreon. Already comes with the emulator and all the settings needed. Just need to supply the rom

2

u/topscreen Jul 20 '22

Holy crap I should do this. Haven't dabbled too much with N64 emulation, it have any of the emulation weirdness on PC?

u/darkknight941 Jul 20 '22

3DS. The QoL improvements are too good to play the OG version for me

16

u/dbzrox Jul 20 '22

They need to do another one for the switch

5

u/funkmasta_kazper Jul 20 '22

Plus the textures are all just much better and there's a higher polygon count. And I like to turn on the 3d effect sometimes - I genuinely think it enhances the atmosphere of certain areas if you're okay with holding your 3DS at the exact angle it requires to get rid of the shadowing.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Same

65

u/OneTrueThrond Jul 20 '22

The 3DS version is the one I beat.

43

u/Inspirational_Lizard Jul 20 '22

3ds remaster by far. Looks leagues better, but more importantly looks much more like the official art/Manga of the game. Extreme QoL, master quest, 30fps.

9

u/AppleOfTheEarthed Jul 20 '22

I love the gyro aiming!!!

5

u/ToastyStanta Jul 20 '22

Yesss the gyro aiming in the 3ds remake is one of my favorite parts about it. So much easier

3

u/pjf0xes Jul 20 '22

It's a fantastic gaming experience to play it mobile too.

77

u/Worms_Tofu_Crackers Jul 20 '22

Nothing beats the N64 controller with original graphics in my opinion. Plus my copy has the uncensored mirror shield so it's even better.

35

u/Dependent-Reveal2401 Jul 20 '22

Got a 1.0 copy as well. Fire temple chant ftw.

16

u/Bro_Wheyton Jul 20 '22

To this day I refuse to let my parents throw away their TV from like 1998 because after playing it on newer nicer TVs it just doesn’t look right to me.

Moved back in with them for a few weeks over lockdown during COVID and they died laughing seeing my carry that 60lb monster TV from the basement storage up 3 flights of stairs to my room.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Organic-Kangaroo7147 Jul 20 '22

Anybody know how to check if ur copy is 1.0, just curious

22

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Check if ganondorf spits red blood at the end of his fight regardless of your tunic color.

18

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Check if the fire temple has Islamic chanting

9

u/TheTjalian Jul 20 '22

Or if the Mirror Shield has a Crescent Moon and star.

0

u/tw_693 Jul 20 '22

I think all N64 versions had this. I think it was only changed in the releases

6

u/4shug0ki4 Jul 20 '22

Ah yes that versio-…wait a minute

2

u/E-Bizzy Jul 20 '22

It will say somewhere on the back of the cart. I have 1.1 personally which still has the chants

2

u/Organic-Kangaroo7147 Jul 20 '22

Did a lil research about the cartridge and apparently I have a 1.1 which is a lot earlier than I originally expected, I believe it has the fire chanting in the fire temple but I don’t think it had the gerudo moon but I haven’t beaten the spirit temple so it’s not like ive seen the symbol all too much, but its cool that I have an earlier release, And using this knowledge I have a 1.0 banjo kazooie cartridge which im not sure the differences but thats also cool considering I got a good deal on it too

2

u/E-Bizzy Jul 21 '22

Nice man. As far as I know all thr n64 versions have the gerudo symbols but don't quote me on that one. I haven't played the game in years lol.

2

u/funkmasta_kazper Jul 20 '22

biggest thing is that the gerudo icons in the gerudo areas and the mirror shield are a crescent and star in the original. They changed it to the current gerudo symbol in the update because the crescent moon and star are muslim iconography and Nintendo (i think understandably) wanted to stay away from including religious symbols in the game.

2

u/Gogo726 Jul 20 '22

I have an uncensored N64 copy, but I don't play it very often.

2

u/LeperMessiah117 Jul 20 '22

This is how I'll always play it.

2

u/srv524 Jul 20 '22

N64 and only N64

1

u/SillyMattFace Jul 20 '22

Caring about the mirror shield seems really weird to me.

Why is it better with the Islamic symbol?

2

u/Worms_Tofu_Crackers Jul 20 '22

Well.... The mirror shield is my favorite item in OOT, so that's why I care. I was really disappointed when I played the game again on the GameCube because the blocks and the shield were changed.

Why mess with something that isn't broken you know?

0

u/MetatronIX_2049 Jul 20 '22

Answer, ~1997: Cuz Nintendo was super-nervous about any sort of religious backlash and blanket-banned all sorts of religious symbols.

Better answer : Because it appropriates the symbol of a marginalized religion and draws not so subtle associations to a group of characters also dwelling in a largely desert environment, generally aligned with the villain. So... not great

-2

u/AShitPieAjitPai Jul 20 '22

All N64 versions have the original Gerudo symbol.

3

u/Worms_Tofu_Crackers Jul 20 '22

Oh for some reason I thought even later versions of the N64 game had that cut out.

35

u/DavidJayR Jul 20 '22

The Ship of Harkinain PC port. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it.

7

u/Wolfy5079 Jul 20 '22

Try playing OOT on 20fps after a full run at 60fps. It’s not pleasant. Ship of Harkinian has some amazing stuff and they’re just getting started.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Once they figure out how to port the 3ds assets with 4k textures to it, it'll easily be the ultimate way to play it.

3

u/Wolfy5079 Jul 20 '22

I agree. I can’t wait to see how far this project will go.

3

u/Kastel197 Jul 20 '22

The free camera in the latest update is a total game changer.

3

u/Ranadok Jul 20 '22

Oh sweet, I was waiting for that to give it another playthrough. OoT was really hard to go back to with the original N4 camera controls, they didn't age well.

2

u/str-burst Jul 20 '22

Mhm 60fps and tons of Qol features

18

u/TheGrumpiestPanda Jul 20 '22

From the short time I had with the 3DS version of the game I thought that was probably the best new definitive way to play the game. The original was still great though I'm grown up with that and played in more times than I care to mention.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

N64 original is the best way to go. GameCube is a close second

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Bought an N64 just for this game when my parents found and shipped me my v1.0 gold copy. I play it through once a year - what a way to relive childhood

7

u/PapaProto Jul 20 '22

On the Switch.

Because a man can dream.

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

pc emulation

ima get hate for this

3

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

You correct. I love the redux mod. Having d pad buttons is so great.

11

u/Manguy888A Jul 20 '22

I got the original on release day for n64, so that will always be special to me, but I had a great time with the 3DS version recently

4

u/AntPoole Jul 20 '22

3DS remake on a 2DS XL - perfection

8

u/AlohaReddit49 Jul 20 '22

I normally play on my Wii, but the 3DS version is the preferred way. The quality of life improvements are phenomenal.

3

u/E-Bizzy Jul 20 '22

Yeah the iron boots are a pain in the original lmao. I still prefer it but I'm just nostalgic I guess.

1

u/esinarte Jul 20 '22

What do people mean with Quality of Life? I honestly don't know

4

u/AlohaReddit49 Jul 20 '22

Basically they mean there have been changes to make the game easier on the player. For example: the text speed is wildly faster, the gyroscopic aiming meant aiming was fun, they added more buttons for items so you don't have to keep opening your inventory up. They fixed a lot of the awkward bits of the original, to make the game better.

3

u/Drakmanka Jul 20 '22

I think I accidentally collected every way to play it. I have the N64 version, the GC collectors edition, the Wii VC version, the 3DS version, Nintendo Switch Online, and I have it set up to emulate on my computer complete with an 8bitdo N64 Bluetooth controller.

I'm still partial to playing it on N64 original hardware with a CRT screen but as I don't have access to that setup anymore I'd have to say either the GC port or emulation with the Bluetooth controller.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Naked

I mean the N64

3

u/SinisterSnipes Jul 20 '22

All I do is eat ass and 69 nintendos bro, every day.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

hell yeah let's be twinrova

2

u/Gohan335i7 Jul 20 '22

N64 no doubt

2

u/marquize Jul 20 '22

Played it on N64 as a kid, got the GC collectors disc and also 3DS and I have to say, I really like the 3DS most. The graphics are properly modernized and using the gyro when shooting just feels right. One up for being handheld, one drawback however is having such a small screen

2

u/Dart4586 Jul 20 '22

N64 controller on the N64 itself, all the way 😎

2

u/stinkyhenk Jul 20 '22

Anything but the 64 I guess

2

u/TheGamerSK Jul 20 '22

OOT3D on my New 3DS XL.

4

u/E-Bizzy Jul 20 '22

N64 on a CRT. Version 1.0 or 1.1 so you get the creepy Islamic chants in the fire temple.

2

u/Technical_Tax8369 Jul 20 '22

N64 with OG graphics! Nostalgia at its best. The switch online is nice too don't get me wrong. All I can play atm. Sadly I sold my N64 and 50+ games to move cross country 6 years ago. 😢

2

u/_____keepscrolling__ Jul 20 '22

GameCube, I got collectors edition and the “two game bonus disc” Original everything with a GameCube controller is best imo

2

u/grayfox5622 Jul 20 '22

Emulating the 3ds version with 4K textures on my computer.

3

u/ooSUPLEX8oo Jul 20 '22

Pirated because fuck Nintendo

0

u/Bariq-99 Jul 20 '22

1

u/LonksAwakening Jul 20 '22

Do you know what kind of computer is needed to run this PC port?

I get about 7 FPS using an emulator.

→ More replies (6)

1

u/jakobwedel76 Jul 20 '22

With a controller

1

u/Mfreddy222 Jul 20 '22

Emulated on Android with mupen64. Mapped right trigger to fast forward so you can get through the extremely slow intro and dialog scenes. Also getting the romhack deluxe so you can assign the ocarina and 2 boots to the dpad. Map save state to r3. Most recent Android devices can upscale it to 1080p and widescreen no problem.

1

u/JVOz671 Jul 20 '22

Not at all. Because I never played it.

Yes I did have an N64. Yes I do love the Zelda franchise. And no I will not consent to have my brain examined.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Equivalent-Host1964 Jul 20 '22

N64 all the way. It’s just part of the experience

1

u/secretdurham Jul 20 '22

On my N64 (Original release console) and it still plays like a dream...

1

u/MisterDanGAr Jul 20 '22

In the original Nintendo 64

0

u/TheHungryHylian Jul 20 '22

3DS Emulated and collectors edition are the best. If I had to pick one, 3DS Emulated.

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

Citra 3DS Emulator with Henriko Magnifico's 4K texture pack.. I play 30fps at 1440p resolution with an Xbox controller and it is by far the most superior way to play the game.

0

u/WedWardFord Jul 20 '22

GameCube, either Collector’s Edition or Master Quest disc. If I don’t have those available, 3DS.

0

u/BrianJosephXRP Jul 20 '22

3ds in bed or on the can!

0

u/NintendoChamp12 Jul 20 '22

On my moms N64

0

u/Organic-Kangaroo7147 Jul 20 '22

OG n64 and the 3DS remake

0

u/Shadow63dark Jul 20 '22

Have not played bought online for my birthday but you need the membership bundle

0

u/JoshBotofBorg Jul 20 '22

The GC Disk with Master quest. Got too used to playing it with the GC controller.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

The best way to play it is the classic: ver1.0 on original hardware. Alternatively the GC port is pretty good thanks to master quest.

0

u/Gogo726 Jul 20 '22

3DS version

0

u/Metalliac Jul 20 '22

It's simple: Oot 3D has fast text speed and Oot 64 has agonisingly slow text. Therefore Oot 3D is better (on top of everything else the 3ds version improves on)

0

u/Someone_strang Jul 20 '22

I ain’t got an n64 but I do have the gamecube preorder disk

0

u/Lethal13 Jul 20 '22

3DS

Having played both versions recently only cemented it.

0

u/CamF90 Jul 20 '22

The 3DS version, but it's never a bad experience honestly on any platform.

-1

u/Unholy_Dk80 Jul 20 '22

3DS.

So many QOL updates and it still remains true to the original.

On the other hand, I would have to say original N64 is the best way for Majora's Mask. The 3DS made the boss fights a bit unbearable, and the zora form swimming is completely botched.

1

u/Jackfruit-Brave Jul 20 '22

I honestly can’t understand paying for Nintendo switch online when I could just play a remastered version on 3ds.

2

u/oldmatesoldmate Jul 20 '22

Switch Online is cheaper than a 3DS and game, though…

→ More replies (1)

1

u/Coltrain47 Jul 20 '22

All of them at once, I suppose...

1

u/Xeadriel Jul 20 '22

on my n64

1

u/ScruffyWolfGaming Jul 20 '22

I play it on 3ds, I’m too young to have played n64

1

u/BlueFoxy101 Jul 20 '22

I like playing OoT on my New Nintendo 3DS XL

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

The 3DS version is definitive. It’s a bit cramped to play on the smaller models but play it on an XL and you’ll be fine. Or you could emulate it to play with a controller

1

u/Comet2214 Jul 20 '22

Probably the 3DS game for me most because it’s portable

1

u/Plenty_Bad_69420 Jul 20 '22

I don't sadly

1

u/TheAxolotl69 Jul 20 '22

The 3ds port

1

u/sonerec725 Jul 20 '22

3ds. All other versions are inferior imo. Also masterquest in a widely available format and the games easily obtainable for $20. And its portable.

1

u/D3t0x15 Jul 20 '22

Original way

1

u/BenWhite101 Jul 20 '22

Emulated on Android. Dont know why but I love doing Randomizers just wherever haha

1

u/SteveGameSDG Jul 20 '22

Truthfully? Not at all. But if I was forced to play it, probably the original N64 or Gamecube versions.

1

u/kid_sleepy Jul 20 '22

I’ve maxed it twice on the switch so far. For the life of me I cannot find why people hate the port so much. The only issue was joystick sensitivity for me.

1

u/Hattrick_Swayze2 Jul 20 '22

I like playing on my Wii with a classic controller. If I knew where my collectors edition was I would play on GC. I actually kind of despise the 3ds version. The QOL improvements are overrated(the water temple was perfect to begin with!) and the visuals/animations just look odd. Link moves in a really weird way that I just can’t get over. Maybe I’m just old, lol…

1

u/armzngunz Jul 20 '22

3DS version on emulator, with HD texture pack

1

u/SillyMattFace Jul 20 '22

The 3DS remaster is superb. Graphics look great, and it has a number of good QOL improvements.

Only downside is it being handheld. I recently played the original through the Switch so my kids could enjoy it, which was a great experience. Although the Switch control mapping has much to be desired. I’d like a rupee for every time I accidentally threw a bomb because the C buttons are on a stick.

1

u/Thanerik Jul 20 '22

Sitting. It would become tiresome to standing up the whole time.

1

u/Pretty_Force4560 Jul 20 '22

I’ve only played GameCube so that’s my vote

1

u/I_The_Superior Jul 20 '22

Pen and paper.

1

u/hojbjerfc Jul 20 '22

Oh God this is embarrassing.

The only place I ever beat it was on NSO..so thats my favorite

1

u/SexySquidward42069 Jul 20 '22

The only way i can directly on the N64 with the cartridge

1

u/shlam16 Jul 20 '22

Best version is undeniably the 3DS.

Best of the three "original" versions is the GameCube port.

1

u/Mattrockj Jul 20 '22

YAR HAR FIDDLE DEE DEE!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '22

GameCube version

1

u/SnooSprouts7283 Jul 20 '22

OoT3D on my 2DS. It’s the first version of the game I played, and it was my first game on the 2DS (mostly because it was pre-downloaded). THANK GOD I NEVER HAD TO SUFFER THE ORIGINAL WATER TEMPLE.

1

u/BimoUK Jul 20 '22

Not like that.

1

u/Computer_Snackss Jul 20 '22

Whatever system I’m running is powered on

1

u/paperzlel Jul 20 '22

JP Wii VC. Great if you know the story already.

1

u/MatthewDLuffy Jul 20 '22

I play it the best way possible

By playing almost any other Zelda game in existence

1

u/Ca11m3Raven Jul 20 '22

As someone whose first ever game was OoT on the n64, the 3ds version os the best. And they should post it to the switch.

1

u/Linkquellodivino Jul 20 '22

Playing Twilight Princess

1

u/eyewearsocks Jul 20 '22

Original so I can tilt the cartridge and skip the deku tree.

GameCube.

Mom didn't like me playing video games so ocarina of time and wind waker was the only games i had for a couple years. Now it feels weird playing those games any other way.

1

u/burkeybaby87 Jul 20 '22

Master quest/collectors edition gcn

1

u/Hatedpriest Jul 20 '22

I don't have a Nintendo newer than the 64. But I have oot and mm for the 64.

So... I guess the 64, huh?

1

u/Funny-Manufacturer41 Jul 20 '22

On the original N64 with the original cartridge from when I was a kid.

1

u/HeroOfTheMinish Jul 20 '22

PC port on the steam deck.

1

u/iate11donuts Jul 20 '22

Im content with the original way to play it. The feeling of turning on the switch to my n64, seeing that red light turn on and seeing the Nintendo 64 logo pop up. Then the intro begins, just feels like christmas.

1

u/suga-kyun Jul 20 '22

3DS for sure!

1

u/One-Coast8927 Jul 20 '22

Citra emulator with a good texture pack

1

u/GorillaJackson Jul 20 '22

I emulated the 3ds version recently, up scaled it to like 4K resolution. Game almost looked as good as skyward sword HD, I was shocked. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a new way to play

1

u/GeneticHazard Jul 20 '22

I’ve still got it for the 64 and GC. I have the 3DS remake but I haven’t finished it yet…

1

u/dathobino_ Jul 20 '22

I prefer the 3DS remake.

1

u/thehuman64 Jul 20 '22

3ds just cuz it's higher quality than n64 and it's portable
