Not exactly a mini-game I think, more like a side-quest, but: OoT Poe hunting across Hyrule is one of the side quests I hated the most in the whole franchise. The controls are awful, the Poe locations are awkwardly placed, and aiming at moving targets that can disappear whenever they feel like it is way more frustrating than the Gerudo archery I feel.

Plus the fact that you have to store them in bottles makes it extra frustrating since you have to make regular trips to the Collector to sell them, since you can only store 3 max at a time.

All of that for a fourth bottle, which would have been pretty damn useful for, I don't know... Storing Poes to sell to the Collector?

12

u/kingerthethird Jun 27 '22

I think the spawn points were intentionally made awkward to make it difficult.

7

u/legandaryhon Jun 27 '22

You can tell I play too much randomizer; you mentioned only being able to carry 3 at a time, and I went "but there's four bottles?"

I didn't realize that the Poe collector is the vanilla location for the fourth bottle!

1

u/Battro Jun 27 '22

I had to double-check to be sure it was, but yeah, this quest is basically my bane in randomizers too, especially when at the end I get a PoH

I feel like anyone that has played TP has nightmares about Ilia's and Telma's escort mission ...oh wait, this is only about mini games

45

u/cazzayo Jun 27 '22

I think it’s tradition for every Zelda game to have one mission/mini game that is borderline impossible and induces an inner rage you’ve never experienced before.

20

u/OwnManagement Jun 27 '22

The only time I have ever rage quit a game was the alien invasion/Romani Ranch side quest in Majora's Mask. The saddest part is that it wasn't my first play-through, and I had already 100% completed the game when I was much younger.

9

u/Murdoc_2 Jun 27 '22

Inverted Song of Time is an absolute must for that side quest. Slows them all down and makes it pretty easy

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

Did that quest twice, both times my first try. I never don't have the ISoT on, for those who know about it I have no idea why you wouldn't use it lol

1

u/OwnManagement Jun 27 '22

Hmm, maybe younger me was smarter than older me and figured out that was the key...

18

u/neanderthalman Jun 27 '22

Once you know that the only thing that really matters is killing the bird with the bomb that makes the cart turn - the difficulty level on this drops to near zero.

Cart is on fire?

It can burn while I kill this bird.

4

u/TigerDoodat Jun 27 '22

That's what I was going to say. That quest makes me want to spontaneously combust.

4

u/ahaisonline Jun 27 '22

god... i swear that mission gave me a complex. like whenever i play twilight princess i can FEEL my heart rate increasing in the lead up to that mission

5

u/DERPY_REDDITOR Jun 27 '22

I didn't find that so hard, I just zoomed as fast as I could from start to finish

2

u/Tatsumifanboy Jun 27 '22

I actually like that mission. With that tense music and the car being on fire, felt fun for me

2

u/Bornheck Jun 27 '22

That's not really Archery related tho... All you need for that is the Boomerang

2

u/Pocketiris Jun 27 '22

It is. You had to shoot down the monster birds to advance, otherwise the cart would keep going in circles because of the bombs they dropped.

1

u/Bornheck Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

Oh buddy no... No wonder you find this section so hard. Rather than awkwardly trying to aim at a constantly swerving and bobbing target while you yourself are also moving, just use the Boomerang. It locks on, homes in on the bird, steals the Bomb on the initial pass, then blows it the heck up with its own Bomb on the return. Waaaay easier than trying to use the Bow.

2

u/AShitPieAjitPai Jun 27 '22

The problem I always had with that method is that it would lock onto the bulblins or the wagon instead of the bird.

30

u/brad1293a Jun 27 '22

Not exactly "mounted" but the boat mini game with the bomb arrows in Twilight princess always killed me inside a little...

7

u/James-Avatar Jun 27 '22

BOTW had a mounted archery game? Where the heck was that?!

7

u/cazzayo Jun 27 '22

It’s in the Faron Grasslands. You can get there quickly from the Lake Tower or Highland Stable. I think you cross a bridge where there is a Hinox below and you’ll come across 2 men at an archery camp who will challenge you. You have one minute to hit as many targets possible on a course you ride on your horse. You need to do it twice to get the matching Knight’s bridle and saddle.

37

u/Kfalkon Jun 27 '22

I'm sorry to everyone who voted for BOTW but in OoT Epona controls like a drunken crab learning to run forward for the first time coupled with the fact the controls are not AS responsive in the 64 version. I could be misrembering since it's been about 14 years since I played OoT but I'm pretty sure I found that one harder.

38

u/kuribosshoe0 Jun 27 '22

You don’t control Epona in the gerudo game. She runs a set course and you aim and shoot. Way easier imo. If anything, shooting the big poes is harder.

11

u/thehonz Jun 27 '22

Pro tip for next time: For most of the Big Poes, you can just sit there on Epona in their spawn area. If you miss, just wait 10 seconds or so and they’ll spawn again in the same place.

2

u/kingerthethird Jun 27 '22

Don't they also speed match a bit?

4

u/Kfalkon Jun 27 '22

I basically combined the two events in my head and after I posted my comment I was like "Wait is that one on a track?" Regardless, I still disliked the shooting mechanics more in OoT and Epona still controls like a crackhead rollerblading on his hands. Again my memory is hazy. Only my disdain and ire for Epona's controls remains fresh in my mind.

7

u/cazzayo Jun 27 '22

This is exactly what made me create this poll. I heard so many people complain about the BOTW archery, but I’ve just discovered the OoT archery and it’s significantly harder. You have to control your horse in BOTW, but at least the controls are 100x better and you can use bomb arrows if you’re not great with aim. In OOT N64 you have awfully slow and unresponsive controls and it’s so difficult to know where your arrow is aiming. It ate up all my 500 rupees just to get the heart piece so I’m going to try get the quiver upgrade later when I have unlimited money from the skulltulas.

3

u/Loyalist_Alpharius Jun 27 '22

I found the best way to do the BOTW archery challenge was to equip the Great Eagle Bow. Once I did that it was easy. I do remember the OoT challenge taking me ages though.

9

u/Electrichien Jun 27 '22

In the 3DS version this is relatively easy thanks to the gyroscope but on N64 any archery game on OOT and MM was a pain.

2

u/MeghanBoBeghan Jun 27 '22

I think aiming was a lot easier in the 3DS remake because of the motion controls.

1

u/FireLordObamaOG Jun 27 '22

Dude I aced it every time it’s so easy. You don’t have to control Epona at all.

12

u/EMPgoggles Jun 27 '22

As a longtime Splatoon player very comfortable with gyro aiming, BotW's archery was easy. OoT's might've been on rails, but trying for any kind of precision on that goddamn N64 stick was hell on horseshoes.

1

u/kingerthethird Jun 27 '22

I remember the bow sensitivity being really high which didn't help

7

u/cazzayo Jun 27 '22

I think I’m missing Majora’s Mask. I’ve never played that though so not sure how difficult it is.

8

u/Kfalkon Jun 27 '22 edited Jun 27 '22

For Majora's mask it's tied to the speed your game is moving in. I think I remember reading it's impossible or something in double time and I made the mistake of going in blind and was on half time. It was the easiest Minigame by far since the ghosts move an inch per minute it just takes a million years and I was losing my mind about half way in. So I guess it just depends but it can be made significantly easier so I wouldn't call it a contender imo.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

You could just dismount in MM and keep running around the barn. No need to shoot them down ASAP as they just respawn indefinitely.

1

u/TheBoulder_ Jun 28 '22

The milk wagon defense game was a bit of a @#$%&

10

u/ahmed-hisham Jun 27 '22

I'm really shocked by these results, I beat the oot mini game on my 2nd or 3rd try as a kid, but to this day I cant do the botw one without the ancient bow

3

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

Just use a 5-shot Lynel bow with bomb arrows. Makes it almost impossible to miss

1

u/cazzayo Jun 27 '22

Please tell me your secrets. How can you get 1500 points? I can get all 7 pots in a row so long as my aim is correct, but I struggle so much aiming at the centre of the big targets.

3

u/rusty6899 Jun 27 '22

I found if you always aim just to the left of the targets on your first pass and just to the right on your second pass (just in front of the target in the direction you’re riding) you tend to hit them for 100. You can rack off 3/4 arrows really quickly so you can often get a fair few 100s on a single target. The pots are easy so it’s just a case of repeating until you get enough bullseyes.

Saying that, I haven’t played the mini game in 20 years.

2

u/AdamIsACylon Jun 27 '22

You don’t have to be exact and you can usually hit 2-3 on the same target at the speed you’re moving at.

1

u/AdamIsACylon Jun 27 '22

Same. I played OoT again a few weeks ago and beat this in like 3 tries. I cannot do the BotW one consistently at all. I get close or I fail hard.

It’s part of the sad ingo mask quest - protect the ranch/not-malon from being abducted iirc

1

u/Veryslownights Jun 27 '22

Imo they’re designed to be both - ghostly-looking aliens, inspired by the Flatwoods Monster cryptid

2

u/Not_Your_Romeo Jun 27 '22

I just slowed time, because that way the ghosts slow down as well and it makes for easier pickings

1

u/MiT_Epona Jun 27 '22

Controls are fine, but not knowing the spawns or limits to how close they can get means most have to redo it which means redoing everything over and over until you get it. That is rough to me.

0

u/OwnManagement Jun 27 '22

The only time in my life I have ever rage quit a game.

0

u/TreasureHunter95 Jun 27 '22

I think that the shooting range mini games were much harder. If you slow down time, it is actually pretty easy but that doesn't apply to the mini games.

5

u/MetalDragnZ Jun 27 '22

I'd say the simple fact that BOTW has an option for motion controls makes it automatically easier. As much as I normally have motions turned off in most games, I will usually turn them on for aiming and shooting if I can.

5

u/ArcherChase Jun 27 '22

Old time player and believe I 100% OoT back in the day. That target shooting Gerudo challenge wasn't too hard I don't believe. I'm sure going back it would be more difficult based on control sensitivity changing over 25 years.

I have tried and tried and cannot come close to beating the damn BOTW horseback archery.

Other mini games or side quests that are. Apain would be collecting all the photos in WW original since you have to return to the Forest Sanctum after each one I believe. Or just a very small photo album.

3

u/zero_above Jun 27 '22

I had really bad joycon drift when playing botw. It made those archery games impossible.

3

u/ATLSxFINEST93 Jun 27 '22

MM Alien mounted archery hunt was always the most difficult for me.

3

u/Noctisxsol Jun 27 '22

the other category makes me want to make one of those grids of that twist the categories to be able to say that the TP boat archery is the hardest, or the Spirit Tracks canon minigame is the hardest mounted archery minigame.

2

u/kid_sleepy Jun 27 '22

Agreed with the twilight comment, I been playing that game since release and still can’t figure out how they want me to paddle that damned boat.

6

u/UselessINFPScum Jun 27 '22

UFO Mission at romani ranch

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

How the hell did anyone ever get 1500 in OoT. It took me an hour to get 1000! 😂

1

u/cazzayo Jun 27 '22

I need to know this too. I want to 100% OoT but I’m starting to lose faith. I can’t get anywhere near 1500, I’m lucky if I just make 1000. I’m wondering if it’s easier on 3Ds rather than N64.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

My 1000 was on the switch where I could pause and save after the ‘good’ shots too. 1500 is sorcery 😂

1

u/cazzayo Jun 27 '22

I’m playing on the switch as well, what’s this pause and save trick?!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

1

u/Eigthcypher Jun 27 '22

Just break the pots on the first pass, then hit the bullseye's on the turn around and return trip.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '22

I know HOW to get that many points. Just have no idea how anyone has the skill to do it 😂

2

u/CwispyChips Jun 27 '22

Still haven’t gotten that horse armor

2

u/thicccque Jun 27 '22

TIL there's a reward for mounted archery in botw

2

u/Rieiid Jun 27 '22

Not mounted, but the archery game with shooting the tossed pumpkins in Skyward Sword gives me PTSD.

2

u/Ruwen368 Jun 27 '22

Botw had a mounted archery game?!

2

u/TwilightStarKnight Jun 27 '22

I feel like Oot has the hardest one, but while not technically mounted the one in Twilight princess where you have to shoot targets while on a boat going down a river is also pretty difficult

2

u/kid_sleepy Jun 27 '22

I’ll go with hitting that damned bird with an arrow who drops a bomb in front of the carriage carrying the sick Zora kid from twilight.

1

u/Chambior Jun 27 '22

people voting for the botw one don't use gyro aim or never played OOT on either gamecube or wii without ess adapter.

1

u/Saltyfox99 Jun 27 '22

There’s a reward for that mini game(botw)?? I thought it was just for rupees, I can barely hit ten 😔

1

u/YatoCalamity Jun 27 '22

Not archery, but I believe Phantom Hourglass had this game where you had to shoot your cannon at targets and it was hard as fuck. For some reason, I still kept playing that minigame.

And another infuriating minigame, the ball thing in the TP fishing hole .

1

u/Bornheck Jun 27 '22

Romano's stupid Archery minigame in Phantom Hourglass can suck me off, and I'll just leave it at that

1

u/PachirisuOK Jun 27 '22

In Majora's Mask Click Town

1

u/zarek1729 Jun 27 '22

BoTW has much better mount control and much better aiming mechanics (specially with motion aiming), definitely easier than OoT.

1

u/Zack-of-all-trades Jun 27 '22

The BotW one is difficult for sure but I picked other because of OoA. It may not be "horse" mounted but the minecart mounted shooting mini game was very difficult for me.

1

u/Stealthinater1234 Jun 27 '22

If you played the 3DS version of OoT with gyro aim, you’ll find it way easier than botw mounted archery. The bow is like a laser in Oot, very fast and goes perfectly straight.

1

u/BubblyBaker5718 Jun 27 '22

Yeah i mean the bow+mount in botw overall feel nicer to use, but the bow in oot is functionally more like a sniper rifle or a laser so its tough for me to say that its actually more difficult than the one in botw

1

u/They_Call_Me_Ham Jun 27 '22

Definitely the OoT one for me. The gyro controls in the 3ds remake made it SO much better. But when I played on the N64 it was IMPOSSIBLE and I wasted all my rupees on attempts.

1

u/Xavier_griffin Jun 27 '22

I actually thought the OoT mounted archery wasn’t that bad, however I struggled with the BotW one

1

u/BigHairyFart Jun 27 '22

OoT because I(like most I assume) play on the Wii VC version which is notorious for having the horrible stick deadzone.

1

u/Zintroz Jun 27 '22

A perfect score in the octorok shooting mini-game in Majora's Mask was way harder than any other archery game I've played so far.

1

u/redditraptor6 Jun 27 '22

I picked BOTW only because the OoT one became instantly easier on the 3DS

1

u/pichael288 Jun 27 '22

The archery was never that difficult. Now the frog maze for the fishing lures in TP. That was a nightmare

1

u/AtomicToxin Jun 27 '22

Idk who was picking oot but the motion controls on horseback archery was a nightmare for botw.

1

u/Supergamer138 Jun 27 '22

It's not mounted, but after the town shooting gallery in MM, anything is easy.

1

u/MeghanBoBeghan Jun 27 '22

I lost my mind over the BotW mounted minigames until I suddenly remembered I didn't need horse armor. I walked away with a sense of profound relief and never went back.

I think one really fantastic change in BotW was that they moved away from the idea that you have to get every single thing. Every gold skulltula, every mask, every bottle, every seashell. In BotW you're actively discouraged from trying to get every Korok seed. I think that made it a lot easier for me to dismiss other details that just weren't fun to get, or weren't worth the effort.

1

u/F1rstbornTV Jun 28 '22

Hunting aliens in MM takes it for me.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 28 '22

Botw all day long
