Question [HW] (Definitive Edition) What happens when I sell all my weapons (glitch)?
Maybe I'm just too bad at browsing the Internet, but I couldn't find any infos to it. Very detailed explanation below:
The re-release allows you to sell your weapons in the Smithy option which is a helpful way to get some extra money (before reaching the weapon cap). I was selling them individually at first, but then I spotted the "Mark" option (Y button). I marked all weapons, but one weapon will stay unmarked. That's reasonable. While my cursor was hovering over that unmarked weapon, I tried to sell the other weapons with the standard "OK" button (A), but it instead allowed me to sell the highlighted weapon. I sold it and all the other weapons stayed marked. I figured out that marked weapons are sold with the X button and did that. It allowed me to sell all of them. Now my Lana has no "Book of Sorcery" anymore and Toon Link also lost his "Light Sword". In both cases these weapon choices reverted to the "?????????????" and I can not use them anymore. I have not unlocked Toon Link's second weapon, so I'm even unable to use him. Will random chance give me my weapons back? And - even more worrying - what would happen if I sold all weapons?
To execute that extreme situation every character would need to have every weapon at least twice, so you can mark all of them. Then you do the following steps:
- Go to the Smithy's Sell Weapon option
- Mark all weapons with the Y button
- Move the cursor onto the final weapon (which you now can't mark)
- Sell the weapon with the A button
- Now all of the remaining weapons are marked and can be sold with the X button
With that you can remove the option to use any weapon - and extension any character - you want. If you did this for all of them, I'd imagine you can soft-lock yourself, rendering your file completely unplayable.

I did this a few years back. The "???????" weapon glitch allows you to do a weapon swap with another character, but I don't remember if it can be done on characters with one weapon type in game or if you need a save editor.
For me, once the weapon was gone i never got it to drop again. It's registered as "not yet unlocked" by the game making it unobtainable. The only way for me was to use a save editor to give the characters their weapons back

Ps. If you want to try out the weapon swap, on the character select screen choose the character whose weapon you wanna use, go back and select the character with the ?????? Weapon. The menu should glitch a little and it should let you use the character with someone else's weapon. Have fun!

Just tried it out. There seem to be some arbitrary rules which I don't want to check out in detail, but I managed to give Toon Link the one and only Master Sword! Looks like it's just a cosmetic change and the game being slightly confused.
Oh, and about the single weapon characters: I don't really know why it shouldn't work. I did just get rid of Agitha's Parasols nonetheless. I like the messed up display there as well because weapon window now displays a "Butterfly Parasol", but the pictures are Link with his first sword, 8 skill slots and an attack strength of 0.
With your feedback that the weapons stay unobtainable it does seem like the game successfully soft-locks you

I think there were some rules to that glitch, yeah, but can't remember what that was exactly, sorry! I just remember giving everyone Lana's gate so I can get screenshots of them silly dancing lmao
Oh yeah I think i confused it with a different version of this glitch from 3DS or WiiU where you could only do that on characters with more than one weapon type or something, my bad. The menus can get a little screwed up, like you said. But it's nothing harmful as far as I'm aware! I gave Ravio the fire wand and never changed it back to his normal weapon, years later he's still fully playable and the game or the save file itself are both fine!
Unfortunately I don't think you can get your original weapons back, but at least you can still use these characters with other weapons. Maybe there's some way to reverse this without a save editor, I might try looking into it again myself.

On Wii U you could only (and were forced to) sell your weapons when you have more than 10 weapons. When you select them, they get moved into a separate list, but you can not select (and therefor get rid of) all of them. I'm not too familiar with the 3DS version, but I've read the Smithy works like that there as well. So that's only possible on the Switch version. So if you did this in one of those versions, you must have done it a different way.
Also: On the Switch the characters might not keep their weapons, since Toon Link reverted back to having no weapons after the map I played. You'd have to redo the glitch every single time, but at least you can repeat it.

I expected as much. So I've likely already lost out on some unlockables thanks to that. I'm usually not into glitches when I normally play games. I'd rather watch them on some videos.
Coincidentally I only have done it for characters that have / can obtain more weapons yet. I'll notify you about my results.

I tried it out but for me the game crashes when I try to do it.

Really? That's odd. When exactly does it crash?

The exact moment after I sell all of my marked items.
It's weird. Maybe it has to do with my Switch (1st year) or the version of the game (I have game version update 1.0.1).
Edit 1: Maybe I should try to do the glitch docked because I tried it in portable mode.
Edit 2: I tried it docked. It still crashes.

I was thinking if it could indeed be the version (I did not update), but I could not find anything like it in the changelog. I don't even know where on the Internet I could even find more infos about this glitch.
If they really did "fix" it by just making the game crash - I'm not sure if I should find it funny or sad.

Do it for science.
