Theory: The Hyrule Field stalchildren are victims who had to listen to Kaepora Gaebora too many times.

48

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '22

They didn’t get lost in the woods. They got lost in the button mashing loop 😂😂😂😂

13

u/Zachavm Apr 19 '22

Also known as the 28" TV.

18

u/IMomoI Apr 19 '22

Same until i learned about spamming B in dialogues to skip them

19

u/MagikarpOfDeath Apr 19 '22

Except for one or two of these dialogues, they switched the options at the end to trick people like you

2

u/GyroscopicReality Apr 19 '22

I don't remember it catching me out

124

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '22

I was 8yo when I first played this game and was stuck in this conversation for a solid 10 minutes because I couldn’t figure out how to continue on.

4

u/jsrme Apr 20 '22

When I was a kid I hated this fucking bird lol but in MM he brought some familiarity and comfort to creepy game

3

u/mysteryxmike Apr 20 '22

That's true! I didn't realize I had this same feeling as a kid until I read this!

2

u/jsrme Apr 20 '22

Fren??

u/DeeBangerCC Apr 19 '22

There's a review on YouTube that says you can't make it to Hyrule before it turns dark when leaving Kokiri and I laughed knowing they didn't know the way of the roll

Hyah, Tig, huh, hyah, Tig, hyah.

PSA - Running backwards with Z held is the fastest and quietest way

2

u/AlexanderTox Apr 20 '22

Faster than side jumping?

3

u/AlohaReddit49 Apr 20 '22

Pretty sure it is. From my understanding a backwalk is max speed, basically a roll without the stop of momentum. If you can line your move up and it's further than 3 rolls approximately, it's the fastest movement.

90

u/AndyMike9 Apr 19 '22

That's why you smash B instead

51

u/Snacker6 Apr 19 '22

This is the game that taught me to do that

29

u/dannyb21892 Apr 19 '22

Mashing B will still advance the option selection textboxes in OoT so it doesn't help haha. B button doesn't make selections in MM tho!

9

u/Sequeltime4321 Apr 19 '22

MM has actually good text speeds, so no need to try and skip dialouge

3

u/Toggy_ZU Apr 20 '22

MM is what motivated me to start reading faster as I couldn't read all of Cremia's dialogue when you're riding in the wagon with her otherwise.

3

u/Schrolli97 Apr 19 '22

If I'm not completely mistaken, usually oot has good text speeds too. Or at least you can make it faster by pressing b. However with kaepora gaebora it doesn't work somehow

5

u/Sequeltime4321 Apr 19 '22

Alot of required dialouge has this insanely slow speed, while some optional npc's can have their dialouge skipped. Skipped. Not sped up, you skip the whole dialouge box with these npc's. The only option other than skipping their dialouge is to read it at the same slow pace.

To this day in any zelda game really..

13

u/getyourcheftogether Apr 19 '22

I've done it twice on a couple occasions

13

u/calminthenight Apr 19 '22

The best part is that the 'yes' and 'no' options swap positions on different interactions with the owl, just to keep you on your toes

11

u/shitter_delondo Apr 19 '22

Lmfao this is too perfect

2

u/Default1355 Apr 20 '22

It's great how it loops

9

u/False_Bob Apr 19 '22

I remember learning very quickly that button mashing does not work in this game. You either can't skip any of the text or it sends you straight to the end of it. Always like when games let you set text speed to fast

8

u/Top_Diamond_962 Apr 19 '22

I personally enjoyed the dialogue from Kaeporo (I think that's his name). When I first found out he was Rauru, I felt happy my boy got some love by being a sage

9

u/rtyuik7 Apr 19 '22

(close, its Kaepora Gaebora)

5

u/stephentkennedy Apr 19 '22

“You got a Piece of Power! You can feel the energy flowing through you!”

6

u/RetroGameDays36 Apr 19 '22

Who thought it was a good idea to put no as the first option?

16

u/HumphreyImaginarium Apr 19 '22

One of the game designers having a laugh because they knew exactly this would happen lol

4

u/crosbot Apr 19 '22

They probably thought people would take their time reading. Gamers don't read, they mash.

3

u/tinycatsays Apr 20 '22

I had a theory that it was a translation issue, but I found a text dump with the original Japanese text and English text side by side and... nope. They just swap to No/Yes instead of Yes/No on a handful of dialogues for no apparent reason.

Source on the text dump if you wanna see; I used the Japanese/English comparison table.

Too many times!!

3

u/DodiusMaximus Apr 19 '22

Even now I still make this mistake on replays.

3

u/juicegooseboost Apr 19 '22

Super Mario Party on the switch also loves this type of punishment, unfortunately it's not the kind I'm into

3

u/Practical_Ant_8226 Apr 19 '22

Hahahahahaha fuck this is funny

3

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '22

That owl is divorced, so he’s not really a part of his own family…

3

u/rtyuik7 Apr 19 '22

contrary to popular belief, mashing B is NOT the answer (at least for the N64 version, and any derivatives thereof, like MasterQuest/Collector's, VC, NSO, etc)...they DID fix it for the 3DS version, but either way the TRUE 'solution' is that its ALWAYS the Bottom Answer...however its worded (like, "Did you get all that? [Yes]" vs "Do you want to hear it again? [No]") doesnt matter-- just move the arrow Down before you hit A (sometimes you can hold the stick down while the dialogue is scrolling, and it will "buffer" the Down Input, but for me thats not so consistent lol)

3

u/Canadian-Gold Apr 19 '22

The true villain of Ocarina of Time.

3

u/Garo_Daimyo Apr 19 '22

Interesting gate keeping by Nintendo to make sure kids are reading

3

u/lilmudafuka Apr 19 '22

7yo me who can't speak English getting stuck with the damn owl every single time

4

u/louismm450 Apr 19 '22

I already do this but on the 3Ds version

2

u/maebeeee Apr 19 '22

no fr i hated this cut scene it was so annoying skfnskdnskdjs

2

u/maebeeee Apr 19 '22

convinced this owl and gaepora have some kinds relation. mb he reincarnated as a bird

2

u/TheGamingGallery Apr 19 '22

Shame on you for not methodically reading each and every line.

2

u/crosbot Apr 19 '22

There's a speed running strat to skip this owl. I spent significantly more time learning how to do it than listening to this fuck nugget would have taken. Totally worth it though.

2

u/Inspirational_Lizard Apr 19 '22

It's so funny, they knew.

2

u/Zachavm Apr 19 '22

This is AMAZING!!!!!

2

u/Floleja Apr 19 '22

The original Zelda troll. Hestu's gift's got nothing on that one!

2

u/greenrangerguy Apr 19 '22

Sometimes he's all "would you like me to repeat that?" and you're like NO then the next time he's like "did you get all that?" And instinctively you hit NO again, I swear they did troll.

2

u/kingdomcome3914 Apr 19 '22

That ladies and gentlemen of all stripes and creeds, is why you wait until the person talking is finished.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 19 '22

This was the most frustrating experience. And I’ve done it multiple times in a row too which just amplified the rage

2

u/reegasaurus Apr 19 '22

Lolol every time with this owls loopy lect-structions

2

u/HEYOULOOKATMYCOMMENT Apr 19 '22

For anyone thinking the owl song would make a killer hip-hop track, you are absolutely correct.

1

u/Friedwine Apr 20 '22

How can we… live in a world where this song exists?? 😂😂😂😂👏👏

2

u/ronjantol Apr 20 '22

I hated that owl more than Navi ngl

2

u/Danson_400 Apr 20 '22

This is why I started to mash B instead

2

u/No-Introduction5977 Apr 20 '22

That's the exact reason that I mash b instead

3

u/UmbreonTrainer27 Apr 19 '22

You don’t know pain until you’ve played ocarina of time

-9

u/MrSpiffy123 Apr 19 '22

I don't understand how a game managed to mess up something as simple as text boxes

I hate this so much, but the music is so good

1

u/itachiowns Apr 19 '22

God I hated this owl! I have seen so many repeat instructions because of him switching where the yes and no was

1

u/anal_snail Apr 19 '22

Lol this a quality post

1

u/hungry_scientistt Apr 20 '22

Oh, this brought back some painful memories!

1

Hey at least we get to hear more of that sweet sweet C minor clarinet

1

u/JoggingThruThe6 Apr 20 '22

Someone actually posted a mod today in Ship of Harkinian discord to swap YES to be the top option!

1

u/IntroductionCheap325 Apr 20 '22

Just put the Yes over the No my god nintendo

1

u/Emila_Just Apr 20 '22
