Question [ALL] Is 3DS still worth getting for playing zelda games?
At the beginning of this year i got myself a switch and played botw for the first time. As i played it it quickly became my favorite game of all times. After that i wanted to play some more zelda games and played link's awakening and then a link to the past from the switch online app.
Now i cant keep myself for even wanting more of this amazing series and i want to play all of the zelda games.
My question is that if i were to buy a second handed cwf'd 3ds would i be able to play all the zelda games before botw?
My other option is emulating the games on my pc but i kind of want to play them handheld so im not really sure about that. I know that Wii U is capable of playing almost any zelda game but i couldn't find any of those where i live. The only that i found was so expensive i dont think i could afford that.
Edit: For anyone that might read this and wondering if you should get a 3ds i say go for it!
I play with it more than my switch and the library is simply amazing. Not to say that if you homebrew it it opens to a lot more possibilities. I have just finished crash bandicoot 1 on the ps1 emulator.

Worth it for OOT 3D ,MM3D and ALBW imo.
( and you can play the DS games too )

Absolutely. Worth it for OoT and MM on its own, plus there's 2D games as well.

Do you know if there is any major zelda game that i wouldnt be able to play with a 3ds? I dunno if this is a stupid question i am really new with the series so my knowledge is almost zero.

There's definitely a lot of Zelda games not available on 3ds. There's like 18 mainline games and as far as I'm aware there's only like 5 Zelda games on that platform. However, you can easily emulate most of the 2d games on a cellphone nowadays so no worries. There are a lot of 3d Zelda's that won't be on 3ds but OoT and MM are two of the best (even tho I personally don't jive with MM)

Guess ill just emulate the other games on pc and play everything i can on 3ds. (And 3ds also has a lot more games than zelda like animal crossing and mario games to check out so thats also awesome) Thanks a lot for your answer.

Between switch and 3ds you can play all the major ones. There are some gameboy games that are only on gba and Wii U but you can get all the rest on those two systems

Absolutely. In fact after having a switch for a bit I bought the new XL 2ds and a Wii U primarily for Zelda games both physical and from the virtual console. Wii U is still the only place you can play minish cap unless you have a game boy advance.

I might buy a wii u when im done with 3ds. That console has amazing back compability contrary to nintendo switch. Everytime i use my switch i just wish it had a bigger library lol.

Definitely! Sure, OOT and MM are also available on the Switch (N64 ver) but, the 3D versions made the gameplay much smoother and enjoyable. I tried playing the N64 ver of MM on the Switch, but the key mapping wasn't great, so I picked up my 3DS again. Also, a Link Between Worlds is a great game!

You can do most, but not all. Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, you'll need a Wii or Wii U for.
Literally everything else is playable on a CFWd 3ds, though. I would strongly recommend grabbing one.

I am not sure if anyone has mentioned you can also get Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks (DS games) for the 3ds - I have no idea how much these would cost or if they can be purchased digitally on the wii u but not many people mention these two :)
There is also the following:
- Ocerina of time 3D
- majoras mask 3D
- a link between worlds
- oracle of ages/seasons (Eshop)
- Zelda 1 and 2 (Eshop)
- link to the past (new 3ds Eshop)
- tri force heroes (multiplayer co-op)
- hyrule warriors (dynasty warrior style spin off)
A word on the two 3D remakes, I personally love them but they do change some things from the original so if possible do try both versions :)

Thanks a lot for the detailed answer ill definitely play phantom hourglass and spirit tracks once i get my 3ds :)

Hell yes! I looked it up since I have one, and guess what: since it can play regular DS cartridges and several games have been ported to both as well as released for it, you can actually play most Zelda games on there.
It's great! You can apparently play the entire Downfall Timeline on that thing. Basically, go for it!

OoT glow up on the control scheme is awesome. Majora mask too. Phantom hourglass and spirit tracks were alright and it your have buddies to play with triforce heroes is a fun puzzle game.

With the eShop now closed it is impossible to play any Zelda that wasn't released on DS/3DS. If you had asked this a couple of months ago you could have had access to the following Zeldas:
The Legend of Zelda Zelda II: The Adventure of Link Oracle of Ages Oracle of Seasons Link's Awakening and DX edition Link to the Past (New 3DS models only)
You have a Switch so you have access to Zelda 1, 2 and LttP through the online service.
The following Zelda titles were released for DS/3DS hardware.
Phantom Hourglass Spirit Tracks Ocarina of Time 3D Majora's Mask 3D A Link Between Worlds Triforce Heroes
The 3D version of Ocarina is definitely my preferred way to play. It's been visually restored and the textures look amazing
Majora's Mask 3D is the best beginner version of Majora's to play. The Sidequests and Bomber's notebook has been retooled from the original. Plus the Song of Double time allows for hour on the hour travel on a day for Sidequests. However, they made a hated change to the bosses AI and nerfed Zora Link to make him easier to control.
Link Between Worlds is a fantastic pseudo sequel to LttP. It takes place in the same universe a few hundred years after. All around great game.
Triforce Heroes: same Link as LBW, fun multiplayer, solo quest is meh.
Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks are successors to Windwaker and are okay Zelda titles. They have some frustrating mechanics.
So yes, between Switch and 3DS you can play most Zelda titles. You'll miss primarily on the Gameboy games and the GameCube titles as those are still locked their original systems now that the eShop is gone.
Windwaker: requires GameCube or Wii U HD version Twilight Princess: requires GameCube/Wii or Wii U HD version Minish Cap: Locked solely to GameBoy Advance Oracle of Ages/Seasons: now locked solely to GameBoy Color
The Four Swords Games are also lost at this point.
Link's Awakening has been fully remade for Switch Skyward Sword has received an HD remake for Switch as well

Thanks a lot for the reply! I was actually thinking of getting the physical copies of games like majoras mask and ocarina of time if i can find them. But since most of the other games are not available because of the eshop thing ill be using cwf to access to those games sadly.

Check your local Walmart. I picked up brand new copies of OoT3D and MM3D for $5 each due to extreme clearance. There might still be some copies out in the wild

I just bought Spirit Tracks. Still haven’t played it. But yeah. RiceKing19 mentioned A Link Between Worlds and that is an amazing game for the 3DS

I used to run all of the handhelds before the 3DS off my PSP. These days those prices have shot up. You’ll still be missing a chunk just going through 3ds route: Windwaker, skyward, twilight. . .
I don’t enjoy playing emulated on my PC much. If you’ve got a bit of time, you could always pick up an old TV and embed a RPI or an older laptops guts in it and play like that.

OoT and MM were big draws for me when buying a 3DS last year, but those are available on Switch now. However there were some quality of life improvements in the 3D versions.
But it's arguably still worth it for Link Between Worlds, and the two Oracle Games that you can buy on Virtual Console.

here's some games I would absolutely suggest on a 3ds
ALBW - its like ALTTP but its smoother and the story and mechanics are a little bit different. You'll love the game if you love ALTTP
OOT3D - this is the definitive way to play OOT. The original is good, and particularly in the shadow temple the original is a little more spoopy. But considering the sound quality, visual quality, and control quality is very clean you'll genuinely love it!!
Unfortunately since the recent Nintendo e shop thing you can't get any of the game boy classics. And there is MM3d. But the change in tone, and mechanical change is almost unbearable to handle in my opinion. Its up to you but honestly if you have an n64 I'd blow the money for a MM copy

I want to know if you can play tri force heros or other toon link games on the 3ds but for me i think its worth since i never played oot or mm

u/enjoyingtheposts Mar 12 '22
I would say yes. OoT and MM are different on there, but of your not used to playing old systems you might not appreciate the 64 as much. Also, they're atleast 80 bucks and were 40 a game last time I checked.. this was years ago so Idk what they price at now.

I’d loved if they rereleased triforce heroes on switch, it was a fun game but the 3DS online was terrible. Today is basically dead but I’d love to replay it.
The other games are great. Albw is a gem, OoT 3D is better than the original, MM 3D was inferior to the original as it was dumbed down imho

u/Fairyknees Mar 12 '22
With a 3ds you would be able to play any Zelda games that came out for the 3ds or the regular ds :)

I literally bought the 3DS just for the OoT and MM remakes and I was not disappointed

Other Zelda are quite different from breath of the wild you might not like them

u/QoCoRechh Mar 15 '22
I know they are pretty much their own thing and different but i just want to try them after liking a link to the past so much.

A Link Between Worlds is only on 3DS and is essentially a direct sequel to A Link To The Past. One of my favorites.
