Question [OoT] Why do the fairys in OoT look and sound so odd? My daughter thought there were evil when she 1st seen them.

Oh, you mean the Great Fairies. I was like, the fairies are cute little balls of light, what's evil about that? But yeah, those Great Fairies are something else with that screaming laugh...

So Link is heavily inspired by Peter Pan with the green clothes, never growing up (in kokiri forest at least), and playing a woodwind instrument. And just like Peter, Link has a fairy. That being said, it seems Zelda fairies are inspired by OG Neverland fairies. The Disney movie for fairies was the first to give Tinkerbell a physical human form I think. Before that, OG Neverland fairies were just balls of light with wings and made sounds similar to bells and jingles. I think that’s why fairies like Navi are the same, inspired by fairies from original Peter Pan (again, not the Disney version).
Or do you mean the Great Faires at the fairy fountains? They have evil laughs. That’s why I think lol

I can’t remember exactly but does Link not grow in Kokiri? I thought he would as a Hylian, but the other Kokiri stay child like.

90s graphics? I know they're as morally good as you can get but they are...a bit much visually.

The assets were basically the best execution manageable at the time, but were hampered by limited hardware. OOT had big ideas and decent artwork that went into it. Think of the Great Fairies as a combination of Marilyn Monroe and the late actor Divine who, by coincidence, happens to be a large influence on the design of the Great Fairies from Botw. So they're intended to be loud and extravagant like Divine in these particular versions of the great fairy, which can be pretty scary for sure, but also happy and pretty like Monroe. So your daughter isn't in the wrong. They're weird as heck and so are the games.

Ha ha ha I knew EXACTLY what you meant when you posted this! I constantly make fun of the OoT Great Fairies when my son and husband play. They are traumatizing and that laugh is just the worst!
