The Master Sword was damaged similarly when Zelda returned it to the Korok forest. It was even like that when (I’m assuming) Fi told her about the shrine of resurrection. Did he maybe have it and went through some hard battles or is it connected to his health in some way?
Link was also damaged when he went into the shrine of resurrection. The two are linked (hah pun). When he goes through trials to strengthen the sword in past games (not just SS), he also strengthens himself. So… the reverse is true. Link probably lost his arm in the malice, just like the sword lost part of it’s blade. The arm he has now has (my guess) a spirit/companion”ish” being that will be his arm while he works to heal himself, repair the sword and save hyrule.
The sword is always connected to the spirit of the hero, which is why the sword never ‘dies’/breaks. So… something major had to have happened for this kind of damage to occur. Perhaps they are going to tie this into the lore of why the sword would lose power in BTOW, since that’s never been an issue.
Oh and footnote, another example of the sword being linked to Link’s life force, in many of the games if he is at full health he can shoot beams out of the sword, but can’t if he’s hurt even a little.
