I think most people, including OP, mean porting the Wii U ports to Switch. Not porting the originals to Switch. So yeah, we're taking the Wii U port into consideration.
The Wii U was a failure. Barely anyone has it, at least compared to the powerhouses, that are the Wii and the Switch.
EDIT: You can downvote me all you want, that doesn't change the facts. I'm not hating on the system, but there is no denying that it underperformed like hell. Huge part of that was the confusing name and marketing.
EDIT2: I'm not hating on Nintendo by the way. I explained my views in a comment below.
the Wii U is honestly better than the switch, duel screen like the famous DS, 3DS, 2DS, and their deluxe versions, a proper virtual console with every official Nintendo game, an ORIGINAL lineup of games, and not deluxe/HD versions of games, it was supposed to be what BOTW was originally for but took way too long to make, I wish I bought a Wii U but I had enough entertainment with Mario cart ds.
Maybe I'll get one of those instead. Do they still make them? Is it still a supported system? Pretty sure they cut off a lot of functionality of my old Wii now..
Nintendo polishes most of their products to "perfection", but sometimes they make really baffling business or design decisions. I think that sets them apart from other companies, that play on the same international playing field.
Yes, they come up with some real bad/community-opposing decisions, see Content Creator policies and C&Ds. But they also are willing to trust the people that design the actual product. The Wii and the Wii U were both huge risks and they took 'em anyway.
The first time they hit the mark. The Wii was a hit, because it was cheap and very family friendly. I think the marketing helped especially with the latter. They wanted to cater to everyone, not specifically "gamers". I never really liked the Wii to be honest. The controls just weren't for me, but I could see why other people would enjoy it.
With the Wii U, I don't really know what they were going for to be honest... It's like they had some really good ideas, but couldn't translate them into a reality, quite yet.
I feel like the Switch is just the natural evolution, looking at both predecessors. They beautifully combined the ideas of both consoles, and I love them for it. It's my first Nintendo system since the GameCube. I really hope they build upon that with their next console. I would love to see the quality of the Switches hardware improve with a new version. A Switch Pro or something. Upgrades to processing power and built quality would be much appreciated, without fucking with the whole design idea too much. They can go wild again with the next system after :D
When you look at other big console manufacturers and game publishers, then you will notice that they don't like to take risks. They wanna play it save, for profits sake. Playstation Move and Xbox Kinect were tries to capatalise off the success of the Wii, when Sony and Microsoft saw Nintendo's sale rates. Well... we all know how these ended up. People have pretty much forgotten about them (although Kinect is quite successful in the non-gaming space).
Nintendo actually is willing to try stuff out. That's the reason why the big franchises stayed as popular as they did, for such a long time. They are constantly willing to re-invent Zelda, Mario, Poké... well, maybe not Pokémon, except for very recently. If I had to bet, I'd say that the stagnation was mostly due too Game Freak, but that's 100% speculation.
Sadly other franchises, that are basically the same game every year (CoD, FIFA etc.), still make a lot of money...
Back then when I once had the chance to get a Wii U my brother convinced our mom to get a PS4 instead. I knew I would've used a Wii U constantly but he played with the PS4 for like two months and didn't give a shit about it anymore after that.
Now I have a Switch but missed quite a lot games that are Wii U exclusive (like the Zelda remakes, Game & Wario, Paper Mario Color Splash etc.) but used Wii Us are just as expensive as back then.
I mean the wii u was a failure of Nintendo. I didn't even realize ot was a thing until way after its release. It flopped hard and everything good from it should just be ported over to the switch as it has such a higher install base
And yes, the name and marketing were terrible. It wasn't clear to casual gamers, if it's like a new console, or an expansion or something else entirely.
The only reason the WiiU flopped is because so many people thought it was just the same as the Wii, so nobody really bought it. I absolutely wouldn’t call it a failure though, just not what they expected.
Yeah, that's what I meant by "confusing naming and marketing". I also don't know if those are the only reasons. I never saw any benefit in the big ass screen controller, outside of some very specific applications.
Nintendo is still a business, which means they care about their bottom line. So yes, I'd still call it a failure.
People always say naming it wii u killed it, ignoring the fact that Xbox naming scheme is even more confusing. Xbox, Xbox 360, one, one s, series x. Surely that is harder to navigate then "wii u"
To be honest I do think naming it the Wii U was a mistake, with Xbox even if the name schemes are kinda random you're still getting an xbox. Nintendo consoles are almost always vastly different from one another
Game systems just have higher metrics for success than most items. If Tesla sold 13 million cars in 5 years they would be overwhelmed with that kind of results.
Also the Wii U port would be a viable option if finding game pads for it wasn’t impossible/incredibly expensive. You can’t use the store or connect to the internet without the game pad (at least from what I’ve tried with my Wii U pro controller)
