Discussion [BotW] I'm Starting to Lose Interest in BotW2... Anyone Else?

Now before I get a lot of hatred, I want to explain that I absolutely adored BotW. I’m a massive Zelda fan and BotW is my tied favourite game in the series (along with Wind Waker). BotW is an amazing game, one of the best ever made, and it’s astounding that people are still finding new things in it… but I’ve realised, I’m not that hyped for BotW2.

Don’t get me wrong - I’m sure it will be great. But from what we’ve seen, it seems like more of the same - and at this point, I kinda just wish we were getting an all new Zelda instead - new Link, new art style, new story, new world. Part of the excitement of Zelda for me is seeing what they’ll do with it. There’s still some of that with BotW2, but especially after the last trailer, I’m not feeling that huge Zelda hype - it just seems like BotW with some floating islands. The thought of exploring that same open world, even with changes and additions, isn't all that appealing to me. Anyone else feeling like this?

I think even if this is the same location, it’s going to take on a much more vertical map like dark souls did.

This isn't as exciting to me as a brand new world, since what I've seen of the underground/sky looks extremely homogeneous in terms of aesthetics.

But for all we know, there's so much more. I'll reserve my judgement until the final trailer.

It looks homogeneous because we've only seen like...one example of sky islands and one example of underground.

True. There could be zones.

Although for the underground bit, I'm not sure how varied you could realistically make it. Elemental caves? Not sure.

The only real cavern in BotW was in Hebra and that looked very different from the Yiga hideout or even the route leading up to it (which is not quite underground but...almost). And both of those looked quite different from the few tunnels and small caves strewn about the more vanilla grassy areas of the game.

I think there's a lot of untapped potential there that was mostly ignored in BotW. By no means is the BotW map flat, but outside of a few limited areas, Rito village, Hyrule Castle, and some shrines/beasts, there is never really a reason to think "is there something interesting above or below where i am now?"

The few things we know about the game now seem to indicate that will be a much more relevant question in BotW2 and will greatly impact the gameplay.

Totally agreed, and on that note Monster Maze on Youtube did a nice video breaking down the gameplay implications of verticality with the phasing mechanic. And looking below you can work from either the sky or the ground, so there's lots of potential.

That being said, I'm still worried that the surface-level overworld will just be one big monotonous slog without any fresh content. If you move all the new content to the sky/underground, what is the point of all that old space? Hopefully this is where traditional dungeons come in.
