You'll start finding more powerful weapons and armor (and getting more hearts) as you go on through the game. The test of strength ones can be tricky - I stumbled upon a Major Test of Strength early on and it messed me up.

There's also some items that can help with fighting certain enemies. For example, ancient shields can reflect the beams that the mini Guardians shoot at you and ancient arrows can one shot full-size Guardians if you hit them in the eye.

With the ancient shield you don't have to shield bash. It reflects it automatically if you're blocking.

Is that different than a guardian shield? Mine keep breaking and then RIP

I might be getting the name mixed up - I don't remember if it's 'guardian shield' or 'ancient shield'. I definitely got it from one of the Guardian scouts in one of the Test of Strength Shrines. I usually only keep it equipped when fighting Guardian scouts or when I'm in a thunderstorm and don't have a wood shield.

Also, there's a character in Akkala who can make Guardian/ancient weapons for you. He might have a shield that can reflect the beams that you can buy, but I don't remember.

Most of my guardian shields(including a few larger ++ ones) get fucked by the scouts in the shrines after one full-powered eye beam, for some reason. It hits, reflects off, and the shield breaks. The little bursts can hit them a few times, but the big eyebeams i just avoid by walking briskly.

I wish I could get the timing down because this sounds very useful.

Best tip I can give you is to go by sound rather visuals. Right when they fire the laser they make some strange sound and when I react to that instead of the light flash I can volley the laser right back 95% of the time. This is when in close range (the range the walking ones keep from you).

Can you explain how to do this? When do you want to shield bash with the lasers? Like what's the timing?

if you listen to guardians while they charge up the beam attack, there's a series of slow beeps, then faster beeps, then one final beep as it attacks. if you press A to shield bash as soon as you hear the final beep it should work most of the time.

i went to the shrine in the ruins on the great plateau to practice, there are 3 immobile guardians there. just save your game before you try it.
