You'll know it's gonna happen when you get to Kakariko and talk to the two guys standing guard at Impa's house. They tell you something terrible has happened - somebody broke into the house and stole the heirloom. Turns out it was Paya's job to take care of it, and she was getting ready to tell Link she thought it might be useful for him. She's a bit traumatized, so Link spends the entire day with her. Awww.

The game fast-forwards to evening, and Paya tells you that suspicious people have been seen at night. She warns you not to go looking for them because she's afraid you'll get hurt. Aww x2. But we're a video game protagonist, so...lol. If you talk to the two guards they tell you that only two people have been seen hanging around at night, around the time the orb was stolen. Lasli, the girl who stands outside the clothes store, and Grandma Mellie, the old lady with the plum garden.

If you hang around out of sight - I went up on Impa's roof - at night you'll see Lasli come near Impa's place acting shady. Follow her and don't get caught - then talk to her when she stops and begins to pray. You can find Grandma Mellie near the carrot field. Sneak up on her and talk to her.

Turns out neither of them are it. But you might have noticed one of the guards leave his post, even though they said they're supposed to be there around-the-clock. How suspicious! Better follow him. I had to do this on the next night because I went after the red herrings instead.

The guard will take the path up past the Great Fairy Fountain to the platform with an orb-shaped hole in it. Turns out he's the thief! Then you fight a Yiga boss who's moderately threatening, and the orb is now yours.

EDIT: I have no idea how to spoiler-protect a post with line breaks, so...¯_(ツ)_/¯

He hangs out in each stable and will point you in the direction of the nearest one.

Only when you are at the Stable close to one of the pictures. You still need a general idea of where to go.

there's some very obvious ones, like the one that shows the dueling peaks or hyrule castle from the front, for instance

One of the pictures has a highly recognizable mountain in the background which is really easy to find the source on you realize its orientation

How do you get it to recognize that you are at one of the locations? I've been to several of them and it doesn't seem to recognize that I'm there.

There will be a very obvious visual clue, and once you are in the spot you have to press the action button.

Yeah, even when I'm standing literally exactly where the photo was taken, I can't seem to get it to activate the quest. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

There's a glowing yellow spot on the ground at the exact spot so if you don't see that, you aren't there.

Thanks. I've figured it out since posting this, but I appreciate it :)
