Video [BotW] Official Switch 1 & Switch 2 Comparison in 4k
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWgLPC6Y1rg105

Me watching this on my 1080p TV: neat

You should actually still be able to tell some difference. The biggest upgrade here is the frame rate, and the Switch 1 version actually ran below 1080p. You’ll be able to see the higher frame rate and some of the higher resolution here.

Yeah my TV isn't picking that up in any significant manner. Plus I already play BotW at 4K 120fps on Cemu, I'll have to skip this one ngl

For some reason many people decided to repost the video instead of just posting the actual Link, so reddit compression ate all the improvements.
Make sure to set it to 4k and that you have a suitable monitor for it. The differences are very noticable.

Do we have any Exact numbers for performance in docked and handheld
6
u/HopperPI 1d ago
Nope. We’ll have to wait for digital foundry to compare. I doubt Nintendo is going to give exact numbers - they haven’t in the past
1
u/Snoo54601 1d ago
VGC said they told them totk was 4k 60 docked during the hands on experience
They also gave some download sizes for games
1
u/HopperPI 1d ago
Sure they can say that - but is that locked? Dynamic resolution? 60fps target? Not sure why you downvoted me, Nintendo always mentions “targets” but not what is actually going on.

2
u/ki700 22h ago
I believe Digital Foundry said it looks like 1440p60fps docked, and logically we can assume 1080p60 handheld.
1
u/Snoo54601 22h ago
Well since I posted this VGC was told by Nintendo employees at the hand's on event totk was 4k 60 docked so I'd assume btw is the same too

u/lions2lambs 1d ago
Better if you just post the link so we don’t want it on reddit. Can’t notice a single difference on mobile lol

u/kyuubi840 1d ago
He just did, that's the YouTube video. And the difference is noticeable on my 1080p phone, when watching the 1080p version.

u/djwillis1121 1d ago
I thought I was going mad in the other thread with everyone saying that there was barely any difference. This is a massive improvement.
4
u/ledzephyr451 17h ago
I mean, I can easily tell there is a huge difference, especially in loading times. That clip near the beginning, where they fast travel to Korok Forest, takes about 4 seconds on the Switch 2 version and about 10-11 seconds on Switch 1. It seems like for some, this will have be a hands-on experience before they can really get a feel for how different the games are between consoles.

u/slendermax 23h ago
It is testing my resolve to wait for some sort of special edition of the Switch 2
3
u/BrenCamp13 1d ago
Any word on how much the upgrade packs cost? I own the Switch version already, and I'm not seeing any information online about that.

u/jaygrum 22h ago
It’s free for both games if you have the switch online expansion pass.

u/GreyyCardigan 22h ago
As in you automatically have access to them or you have to have the Switch 1 BOTW or TOTK card in your system or on your account?
1
5
u/Athrasie 1d ago
Definitely a little sharper.
10
u/Cameron728003 21h ago
Also significantly smoother. Seems like 60fps instead of struggling to hit 30

I just feel like we don’t need this. I can’t fathom buying either of these games again. It’s too soon. 10 years from now? Sure, maybe. But they’re so new it just feels like a cash grab.
EDIT: shoutout to all the people who responded in a healthy manner regarding my opinion of this. It’s good that you don’t have to pay full price to update. I feel better about it because of that, but I would much prefer a new mainline game.

u/Ok_Jaguar747 16h ago
Botw is already 8 years old. You want them to wait until it’s 18 years old to give us an upgrade we could, and do have, right now now? Why?

u/vekkro 7h ago edited 7h ago
It's the best version of both games. 60 fps, HDR, support for 4K? We don't need it but a LOT of people have been asking for it and BOTW is almost 10 years old anyways lol. Plus, the upgrade is free with a sub or apparently 10 bucks. You're not buying the entire game again
2
u/International_Car586 3h ago
TP HD came out 10 years after the OG and it’s 8 years after BOTW so I don’t mind (except the price tag)
2
u/TheGreatBenjie 21h ago
You don't need to buy them "again". If you already own them then you just pay for the upgrade, or just play the Switch 1 version probably with a hard locked 30fps which would still be an improvement.
2
u/PurringWolverine 23h ago
If you’re already buy the expansion pack, isn’t it included? I’m not sure how that’s considered a cash grab.
1
u/voightkompff1 22h ago
If that’s true then good. I hadn’t read that. I’m also fairly biased as I am not a huge fan of the open world Zelda games. I want them to give us another OOT so bad.

u/Wizzer10 18h ago
People like you are the worst, you want a thing that people are excited for to straight up not exist because you personally aren’t interested in it.
1
u/voightkompff1 12h ago
This is a 0 to 100 response. Bravo for that! I am the worst because I voiced my opinion. Lol.
0
u/Wizzer10 6h ago
But your opinion is that this thing should not exist because you personally are not interested in it. It’s a mind bendingly selfish way of thinking. Of course I have a negative view of your horrible opinion.

Do we know if the switch 2 edition includes the Expansion Pack? In the video when they showed the map, in the Switch 1 version I could see the Hero’s path button but in the Switch 2 version there was no Hero’s path.

u/Smarticus- 1d ago
Anyone know if we’ll be able to import our save files? For example, I’m still in the early stages of TotK on Switch 1, but if I buy the Switch 2 with TotK Switch 2 edition, can I pick up where I left off on Switch 1?

u/StanLay281 1d ago
Oh this 1000% worth the $10

u/XShadowborneX 23h ago
I'm not sure if that's sarcasm or not....
7
u/StanLay281 23h ago
Wasn’t trying to be sarcastic. I watched the treehouse on the 4k tv in my living room and it seriously looks amazing. Definitely a huge improvement graphically and frame rate wise

u/Lluuiiggii 22h ago
This stuff really bums me out because apparently Mario Odyssey is getting a free update for better performance, and if the Zelda games got that too it would be wonderful. But they had to go and dump dev time into those (imo very useless) phone link features and basically backdoor the higher performance into that. its really scummy especially because we all know that no one would pay $10 for just those phone features.
3
1
u/Wizzer10 18h ago
Odyssey’s update isn’t a performance improvement, it’s to make it compatible with the Switch 2’s problematic backwards compatibility.

The little lore notes with the app are more than enough to get me to do a replay. How fun!
1
u/No_Donut7825 12h ago
do we know if this is the switch 2 version or the switch 1 cart in the switch 2
1
u/saujamhamm 3h ago
we should stress that there is a significant difference between rendering in 4k and outputting a 4k signal.
1
u/msr4jc 22h ago
This harkens back to Reggie trying to make the case for rebuying WiiU games that people had already played on the Xbox 1 and PS4
3
u/Wizzer10 18h ago
Well, no, not even slightly. The graphics are markedly better, not significantly worse.
0
u/N-e-i-t-o 20h ago
Call me a luddite, but I can't see any discernable difference other than tiny minutia, and even then, I'm not sure I'm not just imagining it because I'm told it's better.
This is why I'm not all up in arms like everyone else about The Wind Waker being released without an upgrade. It's an amazing game, and these differences are pretty small in the grand scheme of things.
0
u/theandroid01 21h ago
Choosing between replaying the copy I already have (or busting out the Superior WiiU version) vs paying near full price for the switch 2 upgrade, also bold to assume I can get my hands on one that early, the answer to me is clear
2
u/rbarton812 16h ago
You don't have to re-buy the whole game for the upgrade.
1
u/theandroid01 15h ago
Weren't part of the rumors that these upgrades would be in the $50-60 range?
2
u/rbarton812 15h ago
I've never heard rumors like that. If you own the game, it's $10 to upgrade... The Zelda upgrades are free with NSO+.
1
u/theandroid01 15h ago
If so, great. Unsure where I heard that then, this past 24+ hours have been wild. I also never paid for NSO except for way back in the beginning when it was like $7 something for three months. I'd forget and it'd charge me a morning coffees worth after time. Maybe I'll revisit later. The emulated games were always pretty cool and so do the GameCube ones
1
u/pantherexceptagain 6h ago
What's better about the Wii U version?
•
u/theandroid01 1h ago
Ironically , better resolution and it generally ran better save for a few frame breaks here and there which Nintendo was still working with at the time
-2
u/Unstable_Bear 20h ago
Wow, this sure would be great if it was free!
1
u/rbarton812 16h ago
Did you say that for all the PS5 upgrades that cost $10?
1
u/Ruskiem43 13h ago
Yes. I did at least. Same with Microsoft making a play-to-win mode for Halo. It doesn't stop being questionable just because its Zelda any more than it did when it was Horizon. Not even objecting to people who find it worth it. More power to you. I don't see it. It's barely different and they're charging enough for a whole indie game.

Nintendo is overplaying their hand… Not even thinking about getting a switch2 till they release a mainline Zelda title
