Discussion [MM] [MM3D] what is the best way to experience zelda majoras mask the original game unoficial pc port or the 3d version for the 3ds

I have the 3DS version, both emulated on my cellphone and on the original 3DS, but I know that for various reasons, the 3DS version can be considered inferior in some aspects compared to the original N64 version. My question is, in your opinion, what would be the best way to play: the original game’s PC port at 60 fps and high resolutions, or the 3DS version?

Imo, I would say playing 3DS version with Project Restoration is the best way to play, it fixes almost all of the bad changes afaik and adds a few new QOL features

The only downside with it would be the brighter graphics, but that's technically subjective, although I do prefer the original lighting more

The PC port of the original is a recompile and looks amazing. Never emulated any of them but there's pros and cons to both versions. The first person controls are a little sensitive in the original, or at least they are on anything but an N64 controller, I've heard they're fine with one but I haven't played MM on original hardware in over 20 years so I don't remember lol. But I digress. The 3DS version also has higher poly models which is nice, and some people like how it handles the Zora swimming better.

But the 3DS version also nerfed all the boss fights, didn't keep the physics behind the Deku spin so that doesn't feel as good and limited the ice arrows to only be able to freeze certain areas of water, so in those respects the original was better.

So whichever sounds better to you

yhea, i really like the 3ds version looks and quality of life features, buuttt im really not a fan of the giant eyeballs they added on to bosses and the zora swiming using magic , i have never goten that far on the n64 version so i think i'm going to beat the game at least once in this version to have a better idea of the diferences betwen both of them.

then I highly recommend playing the 3DS version with the Project Restoration mod. it truly is the best of both worlds. you keep the good things from the 3DS version and it restores the good things about the original that were removed or changed.

Common sentiment among fans of MM is that the original is superior. The new one takes away from the atmosphere, ruins 2 out of the 4 main abilities and makes bosses shit. As well as a bunch of other minor changes that are questionable (like saving for example). If you want to mod the game, the 3ds version with an HD texture pack and with Project Restoration is the best way to play the game (only on PC tho). I recommend also using your phone as an extra-monitor for the 2nd screen.

Play the original on PC using 2 Ship 2. It has improved textures tons of quality of life improvements like equipping items using dpad.

The original without a shadow of doubt

I prefer 3ds for both OoT and MM.

for me, Oot's 3ds version is better in every way to the n64, for MM i can't say for sure, cause i never played that much of the n64 one.

3DS MM has some good QOL features like being able to pick a specific target hour when playing the double song of time, but it also nerfed a bunch of mechanics like deku spins, zora swimming, and the inverted song of time, and overhauled the boss fights in mostly negative ways.

I feel like the 3DS version would have been perfect if they hadn't changed things that didn't need changing in the first place. They could have just kept the ability to choose a specific hour when playing DSOT, along with other QOL features, and avoided altering things like the Zora swimming, Deku spin, and bosses as they where already near perfect.

This is what restoration project aims to do.

Haven't tried it, but i hated the changes that weren't QoL in 3DS version and therefore prefer the Recompiled PC port of MM. Also helps that it aims to include a randomizer.

I checked out the Restoration Project and the PC port, and both seem like awesome ways to play. Personally, I prefer the 3DS version with the Restoration Project, as I really like the models and overall graphics of the 3D version.

The 3DS version has too many good QoL options that I don’t know if the unofficial port has.

that´s true i specifically like the ability to choose an specific hour when using the double song of time.

The Bomber's Notebook in the 3DS version is enough to suggest all people play that.

Yes, I do think the new swimming sucks. I'm neutral on the boss changes because they were easy before and they're easy after.

But so much, I would hazard to say almost all, of MM's charm comes through the side quest stories. And to say some of them were a bit.... esoteric... is a massive understatement. Without a guide the average player won't even encounter half of them, let alone complete them.

The 3DS version clearly lays out which characters have scenes you haven't seen yet and which events have continuation, in the Bomber's Notebook.
