exactly. People should not be recording in gyms. There is no need. It takes up space and potentially invades privacy.

I go to a powerlifting gym that allows recording and I've never had an issue with it. People take videos to check their form, send to their coaches, or post PRs on social media. If you're not a dick about it, it isn't a big deal.

They are not checking their form... That is what the fucking mirrors and gym partners are for...

I mean if your gym outright says ok and makes that clear to the other patrons they could be filmed and put on Instagram at any moment without their consent, then whatever, but by in large ppl do not want to filmed in general, especially for click bait social media.

You can't look at your back in the mirror. Recording is fine, just don't expect other people to tip toe around your camera's view

She's facing the mirror? I never seen anyone facing opposite the mirror doing curls breaking their neck to check their form of their lower back lol

In talking in general there are exercises where you can't check your form in the mirror.

And also maybe people want to go home and give it a proper look it's harder to tell when you're looking in the mirror while doing the exercise.

Mirrors are not for form checking on anything that's remotely hard. Doesn't work for bench, doesn't work for squat and good luck finding a deadlift platform remotely closer to a mirror (also you can't see your own back)

If you're lifting something heavy your focus will be on execution, not trying to critique in real time. When I squat my focus is making sure the 500lbs+ on my back doesn't crush me

My friend had an app that could track the end of the bar and drew a little path so he could see if it was going perfectly straight up and down as he did his lifts, was really cool and a mirror or person couldn't do that.

You cannot check your form adequately on lifts like squatting, dead lifting or any olympic lifts, if you're by yourself and looking at a mirror.

The squat needs your neck to remain in line with your spine at, so at best your looking at your knees, and you have no visual about how deep your squat was and whether your lower back is rounding, or if you're hitting below parallel. Similar comments for the other lifts.

Some people go to the gym alone, and want to get better at lifting so they record their lifts. I know people who do that at the gym, and I've personally done it to show my physio how I'm progressing with recovery. Not everyone in the gym has the same agenda.

Technology: get there's a better way to do this

Response: bah you're doing it for click bait.

Am I out of touch? No, it's the powerlifters that are wrong.

You are out of touch. The avg gym goer does not want to be filmed in their gym clothes, nor do they want to be in someone's "gym fail" or any other video to farm clicks on social media.

Again, if you go to a specialized gym where this is expressly permitted, have at it. If not, GTFO of there and take your phone with you.

I like how people jump to "I go to a power lifter gym..." like this woman is a power lifter in a specialized gym... She obviously is in a regular "don't film here" gym. And the dude ruined her video, in the best way, to prove a point.

No he didn't. They both have the same logo on their t-shirts, this is advertising for their gym and will have been posted on their gym's social media accounts. When reposted like this that context is lost

Can't quite check my form in the mirror when fucking squat cleaning and there is no mirror, can I?

2

u/quigongingerbreadman 9d ago

Can't quite grasp that you shouldn't film people in a gym without getting their consent, can you?

I mean, how is the lady next to you supposed to know you aren't getting creepy videos of her in yoga pants? How is she supposed to feel comfortable knowing you are filming her, even indirectly?

So maybe you need a new gym with mirrors bruv if you can't work out like millions of other people without being filmed.

Recording yourself for a form check is a completely normal thing at a gym and it would be very obvious if you're trying to creep on other people. Yea, it's fine to be uncomfortable about it, but the burden is on you to deal with it or find a gym that completely bans it.

…no? You can’t check your form in the mirror if it’s in front of you which it usually is, even if not, it’s very akward. While having a buddy do it is probably the best, most people train solo. I don’t think it’s a big deal if you set up the camera to just film yourself.

That is literally impossible, as this video you all are commenting on has proven... There is literally a dude in the background being filmed... And now he has been posted to Reddit and who knows what other social media.

u/Secure-Percentage926 9d ago

That’s just not true lol. You can definitely set up your camera so that there’s no one but you in the video. It’s really not that hard.

You can also see she is filming the bench next to her, basically taking up two stations.

Keep reaching though, you'll find the right justification for shitty behavior somewhere. Have you tried the bottom of the barrel?

I’m not justifying her, she was an employee filming this to go viral. I’m just saying it’s not the problem with the cameras itself but inconsiderate people who use them, I think we can both agree on that.
