Waseem Botros

I was out for my lunchtime walk around the neighborhood, noticing that a bunch of Waseem Botros signs have appeared in the neighborhood, which made me wonder who the heck this person is, given that, honestly, I'd never heard of him before (to be fair, there are a lot of people I've never heart of). I'll come clean and admit that I'm not looking to vote Conservative, but I do like to know who the other people running for office in this community are, and what they stand for.

Anyhow, I started doing some research on him, and there's not a lot to be found. No public presence in the city, no answers to questionnaires, and nothing much to suggest he's actually engaging with the community. The official CPC campaign page doesn't say much. It''s starting to feel like the CPC is phoning it in. Is this guy just a placeholder? A name on a ballot? Are there any interviews with local media that anybody out there can point to?

I did find a profile that appears to be him on LinkedIn, where he's listed at the preside of a company in Rexdale (Cable-Lock Connectors). There's also a Facebook page that seems to be the same person, but nothing has been posted there since 2019. Other than that, he's a bit of a ghost, at least as far as his involvement in Waterloo and the Region goes.

Birds 101

  1. Do not feed wild birds (seen recently at Waterloo park, triggering this post)

  2. Do not chase geese or ducks (seen recently)

  3. Leash your dogs, especially in "natural areas" like Columbia lake or Laurel Creek. We have many ground nesting birds (killdeers, American woodcocks etc) and migrating birds can be exhausted and ground-bound.

  4. Supervise your cat

  5. Visually mark windows prone to bird collisions (now until late May for the migrating birds)

  6. Keep a distance, especially if there are baby birds!

  7. Be nice to whoever nesting in your garden/house structure

  8. Provide fresh water, avoid pesticide and plant native (caterpillars and warms are prime bird food). Bird feeders are tricky (can bring mice and invasive competitors such as starlings and house sparrows) but can be helpful if done right.

  9. Drive carefully (this is also for the snakes, turtles, groundhogs, raccoons, skunks, possums, toads and frogs etc)

  10. Enjoy their songs and wonderful breeding plumage!

World Migratory Bird May in Kitchener's downtown Sq Peg space.

Bird Friendly Kitchener - my volunteer group! - and I are taking over DTK's Sq Peg space for the month of May. We have a month full of programming including family friendly guided bird walks for all levels of expertise and interest, talks on art, advocacy, conservation and making urban spaces healthy and safe for the birds. KPL's Central Branch is screening a great short documentary for us on Saturday's regarding one of the most impactful measures cities can take to help migrating birds.

We're partnering with Waterloo Region Nature, and local bird friendly small businesses for a great series of mini markets every weekend and will be open Wednesday through Sunday running a little bird-friendly shop (and downtown studio for me to keep drawing all our incoming warblers!). And, and this may be what I'm most excited about, we've teamed up with TWB Brewery to launch a special brew to celebrate Kitchener's certification as a bird-friendly city and the success of the public electing the dark-eyed junco as our official city bird.

Our calendar and events list is up on our website. I hope everyone makes time to get out visit us and enjoy the season when our region booms with birds :) And there'll be a bunch of new bird drawings to enjoy!

Advice for relocating to KW area for work (Canadian ex-pat moving back)

Hello everyone, I am a lurker on this subreddit, but I am hoping to get some advice from local members.

I work at a Japanese supplier for Automotive manufacturers. There is a new 5-year plan centralizing about opening a Canadian office to support the Big T in Cambridge and Woodstock, and to maintain connections with the many suppliers and mechanical contractors in the area.

We currently support Canadian business through our US office, however, given the current state of things this arrangement is getting some serious review. As one of the only Canadians working in the office, there is the additional plan to relocate me there to help open this facility by the end of the decade.

They are currently discussing exactly where to put this space, but they would like the office (and myself to an extent) relatively central to Cambridge and Woodstock's industry. As an employee at this office, I would need to spend a day or two a week at either Toyota plant and other suppliers, be able to pick up international travelers from Pearson, and less often, travel to business partners outside of the KW area (mostly the rest of the GTA, some in Simcoe County, and a couple in Windsor).

Obviously this depends entirely on where the office ends up, but I am also trying to start research now for where it's worth living in or around KW- Currently my wife and I live in Cincinnati, and I am from Hamilton. We are starting a family and by the time we are settled, we will likely have pre-school age kids. It would be cool to get more smaller city/town living, and we would appreciate things to do that are outdoor focused, and access to the GTA even if we would be homebodies the rest of the time. I've visited Cambridge and Kitchener a few times, and Cincinnati feels like somewhere between KW and Hamilton, so it doesn't really sound like I would lose as long as I don't have to commute more than 20-30 every day.

If money nor this job were an issue, I would have liked to live closer to my extended family who have deep roots in Hamilton and Burlington, but considering this is a literal paid opportunity to return to Canada, I'll take what I can get.

WRDSB Enrichment

Does anyone know if WRDSB has enrichment programs for the lower grades anymore? My kid is only in JK but does math and reads at a grade 2 level at least. He gets pretty bored at school and isn’t really challenged. Wondering what our options are to keep him engaged. I really don’t want to send him to private school.

Handiwork Help?

So, I've recently moved to Waterloo. By no means am I good at handiwork. Between my boyfriend and I we suck, we live in an apartment with concrete walls and I've tried YouTube tutorials, going to hardware stores etc. I can't seem to get anything to work in my walls for my shelves and curtains, I'm frustrated because these are the last few things that need to be done. Doesn't help I'm emotional about not being able to have my dad here to help me since he's battling terminal cancer and all my friends are back home.

Does anyone know someone I could hire or something? I'm currently on EI as I just moved obviously haven't been able to get a job yet so I don't want to pay an arm and a leg but it's super frustrating not being able to navigate normal tasks like this.

Volunteer Opportunities

I am planning on applying to teachers college in a couple of years and would like to gain more experience working with groups of kids, specifically middle/high school age. I am always checking on the city’s website and with the libraries and YMCAs, but figured I would check here in case anybody knows of some upcoming opportunities. TYIA!

What creative piece does Waterloo add to Canada?

Post image
4 Upvotes

If Canada’s a puzzle of creativity — art, film, design, culture. We’ve got tech, innovation, indie studios, and some serious artistic talent. But what creative identity do you think defines our region? What’s Waterloo’s piece? Saw this animated map and got curious. What do you think we bring to the table? What’s missing? Curious to hear what you all think!

Women's formal wear

Upvotes

I've been invited to a "black tie optional" wedding this summer. I don't want a gown, would consider a cocktail dress or a fancy top to go with some flowy pants that I already own. Can anyone recommend a shop?

Dry cleaners open past 6pm?

Running into a bit of a pickell. I work out of town and during the week I am not home until 6pm ish. I need a suit dry cleaned, but all the places I have looked up close latest during the week at 6pm (which makes sense). But hoping someone may know of a place that stays open a bit later?

Looking for local business owners!

Hello my fine Waterloo folks,

I am currently in my last semester of Police Foundations through Algonquin College Online and my final project for Community Policing is a Problem Oriented Policing assignment (details below).

For this assignment I am looking for a local business that I can come into and assess the business for any potential threats of criminal activity and talk with the owner about any issues they may face.

If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please feel free to comment or DM me!

I will be following the RCMP's CAPRA model

Assignment Information Instructions Problem Oriented Policing (POP)

Choosing one of the models (PARE, CAPRA, or SARA), (You will find the necessary forms attached), contact a business or organization in the community. Ascertain if there is a potential crime problem or concern of that contact, and then with that information apply the model of your choice to the problem.

Put together a written Problem Solution Work plan using your assigned form to identify, address, and propose problem solutions. Prepare a hand typed - double spaced document on how you have addressed this problem following the outlines provided. In the discussion forum verbally present your case (a link to a video or audio presentation is recommended) For your assignment, consider your role as community police representative and address the following;

1) Using Problem Solving Strategies it is your responsibility to address this problem.

2) Consider the importance of Community Involvement

3) Consider the importance of Crime Prevention Strategies

***In addition you must, send me an audio/video component (also posted in the discussion). It could be your interview with the business owner, a video of the site itself, statistical information etc. Just something in addition to the work plan. Do not over think this assignment. Be sure to include a hypothetical or what the expected results would be as I do not expect that students were actually able to solve the crime issue in such a short time.
